    Leaving out the battery grip is what caused me to hold off on buying the original R7. Hope this changes for the update.

    I had pre-ordered the R7 but cancelled because of the rolling shutter and noisy mechanical shutter. So, those are my main requests for the R7 Mark II. They also need to get the AF on par with the R6 II and R8. A battery grip would also be nice. I'm not holding my breath on a stacked sensor, since the more expensive R6 II didn't get it.

    I know a lot of people dislike the R7... but I love it. However, there are some things I wish it had, like a battery grip, and less rolling shutter. But this is a fantastic video camera, especially with the auto-level feature (which I use constantly). I hope the mark II keeps at least the 33mp, I don't want anything less than that.

    What made you mention dynamic range? The dynamic range of the R7 is actually good. I haven't had any DR issues at all in 18mths of using the camera.
    Improving the dynamic range is a good thing, for sure, but it's certainly not an issue as it is now.
    I hope they retain the rear dial position as its brilliant! I'm guessing you've never used an R7. My FF cameras' rear dials feel awkward and nowhere near as ergonomic. The R7 wheel is literally right next to your thumb. You move about 1mm to start turning the dial. It's perfect.
    The buffer is perfectly fine if you shoot cRaw. It does at least 120 shots before the buffer fills, if you shoot at 15fps, which is 8 secs of shooting. You just need a reasonable SD card. I'm sure people are clueless about the R7.

  • @PaulBawby
    @PaulBawby 8 месяцев назад +15

    Even though it's not perfect, I can work with the R7 rearwheel. But a 32mp stacked sensor on a R7 mk II would be a very substantial upgrade, especially if they can give the improved AF of the R6 mk II 😮

    • @simonthibodeau7082
      @simonthibodeau7082 8 месяцев назад

      I'll take 24mp stacked any day, good enough for me.
      If they do 33mp, it better be an actual improved one too. Many tests have shown that the 33mp on the R7 doesn't resolve that much more than 26mp sensors in other brands. We got more resolution and the slowness of the sensor that goes with it for not much benefits.

      The R7 rear wheel is one of the best ideas Canon has come out with in years, in terms of ergonomics. After using that, my full frame cameras feel weird and much more awkward to reach. The vertical rear dial is literally right next to where your thumb rests!

    Keep body same size, stacked 32.5mp APS-c. Keep everything on the menu and body the same and I'm first in line. I am currently an R7 shooter and have very few complaints about the camera. Rolling shutter does happen but it's not a huge deal, if I'm shooting flying birds etc. I just use mechanical. Frame rate at 30 is more than I need. I use 15 even with electronic.
    Just the opinion from an R7 shooter

    I've used the R7 since it was launched as a stepping stone to get used to the mirrorless system while I wait for Canon to have a stacked sensor full frame mirrorless body with north of 30 megapixels. I photograph wildlife, especially birds, and I still use DSLRs when I want full frame. The R7 is a compromise camera in so many ways. It can produce very nice images but you have to understand its limitations and work with or around them. If an R7ii comes along with a stacked sensor and little to no rolling shutter, a much larger buffer, much faster readout speed, at least one CFExpress slot, more consistent AF and the option to add a grip then I'll happily pay a significant price increase for it , to go alongside whatever full frame mirrorless body I end up buying. It would also be nice if Canon redesigned its RAW Burst Mode from the bottom up because the current setup is a mess - but that's not unique to the R7. As it stands, the R7 is a camera I really want to like, but there are just too many things about it that are working against you in the field when shooting wildlife - which is a large part of this camera's target audience.

  • @HeadlessChickenTO
    @HeadlessChickenTO 8 месяцев назад +1

    As an R7 user, here's my wish list.
    -A slight bump in resolution is fine, as long as the stacked sensor is included.
    -The AF loses my moving subject a bit too easily. So maybe more AF points or better software.
    -The buffer needs to be larger.
    I'm actually fine with that rear control wheel, the EVF, and flippy screen...though with the later 2, I won't complain of the upgrade. And I do find V90 cards plenty fast with the added bonus of being cheaper than CFEx.
    As much as I'd like for these, I'm ok with my R7. It's only been 2 years. But I wouldn't hesitate to trade in if this turns out to be true, and scrap my idea of having a complimentary R6mkii to my R7.

  • @jeffreyhill4705
    @jeffreyhill4705 8 месяцев назад +3

    The R7 has outstanding focus compared to a dslr, sub par focusing when compared to an R8, R6, and R5. It just seems to move forward of the subject even with eye af locked on. I suspect and have heard the readout speed of the sensor is just slow, also causing rolling shutter, also the mechanical shutter, which is required for birds is too loud. Keep the 32 mp or increase, speed up the sensor itself, quiet the shutter and it will be my next purchase. The R7 will be the shortest time I owned a camera. Make it a stacked sensor with the 200 to 800, and everyone can just go home.

    I've been using an R7 for over a year now. Interestingly, while many people, especially full-frame (FF) users, often discuss technical aspects, I've found that when I'm birding with FF users, I can surprisingly capture better shots than them. I believe it's crucial to familiarize yourself with this camera's strengths in order to capture excellent photos-ones that are nearly comparable to FF or even superior in certain situations. Personally, I'm hoping the R7 II will offer a better autofocus (AF) system and a stacked sensor. I wouldn't mind paying more for an R7 II with a stacked sensor, as dealing with rolling shutter issues can be quite frustrating at times.

  • @wellingtoncrescent2480
    @wellingtoncrescent2480 8 месяцев назад +2

    I actually like the rear-wheel on the R7, which is in a very natural position for controlling aperture or exposure compensation. And while I admit that the slower sensor creates a lot of rolling shutter, this is easily avoided by using the mechanical or first-curtain electronic shutters. So I'm not so keen on a stacked sensor if it makes the camera unaffordable. If the eye-tracking AF performance could be improved (e.g. with a faster processor), that might be a worthwhile upgrade for those of us interested in bird/wildlife photography at an affordable price, but the R7 - as is - remains an awesome tool for this genre, with its high resolution (32MP) sensor, bird-eye tracking AF, and unbeatable reach.

    Finally a camera that might matter to me ! The R7 (I have two of them) have been the best cameras for my purposes, mostly small birds, that I have ever owned. But they certainly have several issues which need to be worked around. A stacked sensor, and available grip would be awesome ! As far as the rear controls.... eh... after 20 months using "only" two R7's, I'm so used to it, I use them without thinking. If they switch it back, it will just screw me up for a few months until I get used to it again. Don't care about any other lenses. The 200-800 is the Holy Grail for small bird photography. IMPO, 'better' than a big white in several respects > fully understanding that those are what the pros used back in the old days ;)

    If this pans out, it's very exciting. Don't get me wrong, I'm excited by the R5 II and the R1, but neither is going to be in my price range. An R7II would be. As a long-time cropped sensor Canon shooter, moving from the 7D II to an R series camera, my choice came down to the full-frame R8 or the crop R7. In the end, I chose the R8 for a couple of reasons.
    1. I did want to finally get a full-frame camera, for astro photography and for indoor use.
    2. For wildlife, I wanted first-rate AF performance.
    As much as the R7 was given a very solid R series AF system, the R8 got the best Canon makes, getting the R6 II's sensor and AF system.
    The R7 has mixed results for RUclips wildlife/bird shooters, with some being very satisfied, while others have reported some intermittent issues. The prevailing theory is sensor readout speed, which is much more relevant to AF on mirrorless cameras than it was on DSLR's (which have a dedicated AF sensor). While the full-frame R6, R5, R6II, R8 and the crop-framed R7, R10 et al all have conventional CMOS sensors (rather than Stacked or BSI sensors), that's where the similarity between the full-frame and crop-frame cameras end. While the full-frame cameras (even the "budget" R8) got newly developed sensors with fast readout speeds (for a non-stacked sensor), the crop cameras seemed to get "parts bin" sensors from the crop camera DSLR line, adapted to mirrorless. A stacked sensor R7II should rectify that issue and allow the AF system to match (or exceed!) the AF performance of its full-frame bretherin.
    I love my R8 (it's GREAT with the 200-800!). But getting the crop factor advantage again would make the lens potentially even better! Not to mention the RF 100-400 on a crop frame for a light-weight birding option.
    Bring it on! Hope this proves to be true!

    Sitting here with an old 7DmkII, I am casually looking for something like a lightly used R5 or this "R7mkII". A flagship APS-C would be pretty cool.
    The big concerns I've had with the current R7 is build quality, control handling, lowlight performance, sensor readout, and AF performance. Video is also a growing concern for me now as I find myself wanting to film wildlife. No matter how good my photos are, if I show family a video I took, they get really excited. People absolutely love video, which is why I have often considered going to a used R5.

    I have had the R7 since it was released and although its a great camera it does need some upgrades to keep up with other APS-C cameras, such as the Fuji X-H2S. Improved LED screen to 5.76Md / Stacked Sensor to prevent rolling shutter / Dual card slots for CFexpress card & UHS-II SD slot. With just these changes to the R7, Canon would attract a greater section of the APS-C market, of that there is no doubt. I have tried the Fuji X-H2S and its a great camera, if this camera had been around at the time I purchased the R7, then I could well of chosen to go with Fuji instead. So come on Canon, let's take the R7 Mark II out for a spin and give your competitors something to think about. If Canon do go ahead with this I'll be the first in line at the camera store 📷

    I agree with the hoped for specs for an R7ii; it’s always nice to dream. As to Canon APS-C generally, you’re absolutely correct - Canon needs to give their APS-C glass some significant attention (and pretty much always have) or open up the mount so others can. I have never been able to tell if Canon sees APS-C systems as a fully supported stand alone system or simply a stepping stone into their full frame systems.

    I fully understand what you’re saying but Canon is in the process of a complete changeover from the EF to RF mount. That switch has a mountain of bodies and lenses to be filled in. Canon knows that it must retain the professional level photographer in order to attract the consumer and advanced amateur photographer. They have still not released their RF mount 1 Series flagship body because they have stated that they want it to be king of the hill. They have released a very capable, series of lesser capable models in the R3, R5, R6, R6MkII, R7 APS-C, and R8. This is the paradigm shift in cameras for Canon and they want to make it a real crowning achievement. That takes time and it has been prolonged by Canon being late to being fully committed to mirrorless. Going forward I expect to see the existing Canon lens lineup in the EF mount to be replaced with RF mount lenses with better specifications and more capabilities that take advantage of both new designs and technology. I think that the efforts are necessarily focused upon the Canon professionals first because they generate consumer and advanced amateur customers going forward by their usage example at events like the Olympics and professional sports competitions. Overtime, I expect us to see more consumer focused products in terms of both bodies, lenses, and accessories. Once fully filled out we will see another 15-20 years worth of successive improvements in series II and III products. Just saying that Canon is a big ship that moves forward but at a measured and consistent pace. That’s frustrating when we lack patience and gave up a lot during the pandemic. Built up demand and desire is a very powerful force but difficult to satisfy when the development and supply chain had such a huge amount of stagnation for such a long time. Sony really benefits from this and Canon is still suffering. We the consumers at all levels of expertise are truly stuck in the delayed advancement.
    All the best.

    @robertatwell7615 8 месяцев назад +1

    The Canon R7 is mainly focused upon advanced stills photographers who are shooting sports and wildlife. I frankly think that an R7 refresh will be focused more on stills photography capabilities than video. Canon has only recently begun the transition from the EF and M mounts to the RF mounts. There are already plenty of EF lenses that are easily utilized on APS-C sensor bodies with the EF to RF adapter. Canon is likely to fill out its full frame regular and L grade lenses in the RF mount before they focus on APS-C bodies and lenses for APS-C. The main reason one might add a stacked sensor to the APS-C line is to give the smaller sensor form factor better dynamic range and less rolling shutter issues. That is the true advantage for smaller form factor sensors over the existing R series APS-C sensor bodies.
    The idea of putting Z lenses on the APS-C bodies is almost comical. A $2-$3k lens with a $1k adapter on a $1.5k body doesn’t make a lot of sense to me. What does is a second generation of full frame lenses with the Z functionality built in and new touch screen interfaces that replace the mechanical buttons and wheels that are more like the controls that are used on our cell phones. Camera manufacturers exist because they produce better quality images than cell phones. Cell phone users expect the sophisticated easy to use interfaces that they have on their smartphones and camera manufacturers are likely to be implementing that kind of technology going forward rather than tailoring a camera that is more focused on consumers and advanced amateurs than professionals.
    I think that it’s about the economics and target audience now.

    What I would like to see in the R7 Mark ii is 1. A battery grip, that's what turned me off to the Mark i 2. Improvement on the rear wheel and the joystick I wasn't too wild about about having them both put together on the original R7, 3. Design better lenses the latest ones make the camera look a little smaller than it already is, which leads me to 4. increase the size just a tad there are already smaller mirrorless camera on the market and personally not everyone's hands are the same size [I have big hands BTW.] if canon can make the camera a little bigger in size not weight then I won't have any problems shelling out a little extra "Cha-Chig." for my buck..., That is my suggestion for the EOS R7 Mark ii.

      dropping the sensor to 28mp would be great too - the R7's high ISO performance is well, certainly poor vs its FF cousins. The current 32mp sensor is equivalent to ~82mp FF. We don't need that resolution. 24mp BSI stacked APS-C sensor would be an amazing performer and all rounder - offering plenty of resolution (~55mp), faster buffer potential, and much better high ISO performance, especially considering shooting birds in dimmer locations/scenarios such as rainforests.
      I don't want more mp on an APS-C sensor camera, I want better buffer and better high ISO performance. If I'm shooting raptors, even in bright sunny conditions at 1/4000 and f8 ( to heavily reduce motion blur chances), I'm probably shooting at or near ISO 4000 from my extensive experiences over the past 14 months. Noise is very good for me, but I'm using a 24mp BSI stacked R3. A cropped sensor will perform worse than my FF camera and probably be closer to ISO 8000 with the current R7. Not particularly desirable.
      I went to O'Reillys rainforest retreat for a few hours on Sunday and got some Yellow faced Scrubwren shots with my setup (R3/500f4 mark 1/1.4x TC III) and even shooting at 1/500, f5.6 wide open and ISO25600, the bird is ~1 stop underexposed. And this is ISO25600, right on the border of usability with the R3 imho (I tend to limit it to 12800 as a maximum with exposure nailed). I wouldn't even bother trying to take this shot with a R7.

    I hope for all the specs you mentioned but would add a dedicated pre capture button, a CF Express Card, option for a battery grip (although I don’t use one to save weight), and up to 40fps with better weather sealing. I would pay up to $500 more for this and it will still keep the R7 Mark 1 on the market for people who don’t need the extra performance and want to spend less money. 😊

    I do not consider the R7 to be an MILC upgrade to the 7D mark II. The R7 has a rear panel similar to Canon’s Rebel DSLRs, which also lack a battery grip.
    Despite having dual card slots, it is better described as an MILC upgrade to the T8i, which makes the R7 naming convention all the more strange.
    Similarly, the R8 is hardly an MILC upgrade to the 6D, which is a niche the R6 seems to fill. The R8 has a full frame sensor, while using the same battery and user interface as Canon Rebel DSLRs.

    Hi Simon, when the R7 comes, it would be smart to give it indeed a stacked sensor and most of your other suggestions .. but I'd be extremely surprised to already have a Canon APS-C stacked sensor on the shelves within less than half a year after the R1 & R5ii would become available. Second half of 2025 would seem more realistic.
    And yes, while we cross our fingers for the R5ii to get dual CFxB cards, it makes great sense to give the R7ii one CFxB and one SD slot. The CFxB will play a big role in getting a larger "perceived" buffer size.
    The stacked sensor would really be the key, because the current R7 sensor requires more than twice the readout time of the R5 (maybe even 3 times). This slow readout gives us much more rolling shutter (making the electronic shutter a bad choice for moving birds !) and it also makes the AF much less consistent than the R5/R6ii etc just because sensor readout time handicaps the AF control loop. By concept the AF is nearly the same between R7 and R6ii, but the R6ii can do twice as many control loops as the R7.
    I would disagree regarding the rear control wheel because it's easier to find with the thumb, once getting used to the new location. The problem is rather the R7 is now missing the third control wheel (typically the ISO wheel or exposure compensation).
    So Canon: give the R7ii a stacked sensor, CFxB, third control wheel and an optional battery grip and it will be a very compelling camera .. certainly when the RF-S selection gets expanded.

      Seeing a stacked sensor would be a surprise when the R6 II doesn't have one. But as a top of the line APS-C camera, it could do this, but they would have to raise the price.
      Third control wheel - yeah, that makes sense!

    • @WernerBirdNature
      @WernerBirdNature 8 месяцев назад

      @@OrdinaryFilmmaker yes, the R7ii would move up pricewise, closer to the R6ii.
      I would guess the R6iii may get the R3 sensor once the R3ii arrives.
      In any case, a stacked sensor APS-C flagship would clearly aim at birding and sports where long reach is desired. The R6ii is perfect for everything where reach is NOT the top priority. Their requirements are very complementary so they are not competing each other at all.
      When I had the original R6, I was doubting between adding the R7 or swapping R6 for R5. If today's dream R7ii had been around, I would have probably not chosen the R5.
      But while the key elements of an R7ii seem rather straight forward, we still have no clear clue what will make the R5ii game changing .. so it's hard to predict whether my next camera would be the R7ii or R5ii, but it's probably wise for me to wait until both are around.

      @@schimor Hi Schimor, I do like the added flexibility from the control ring but the control ring isn't suited for quickly changing the exposure (shooting in M mode, needing third wheel for either manual ISO or exposure compensation) because while reaching for the control ring you can't keep using your left hand to balance the camera. On my R5, the ISO wheel is quickly reached by moving my thumb away from the back-button focus buttons. Also the control ring is near the lens hood on the 24-105/4, but it's near the body on the 100-500 .. so can't use it nearly subconscious via muscle memory.

    IF the R1 crowds the mission of the R3 then I suggest make the R3 the new R7 Mk. 2. Keep the R3 body, install and improve the 32meg sensor to greatly reduce rolling shutter, expand the buffer and improve the EVF over the R7. Drop the eye track AF that has been hit or miss to lower the cost. Make whatever improvements you can to the AF but keep the price around three-grand. Team this with the 100-500mm or even the 200-800 zoom and watch the birding and sports photographer communities make this the APS-C camera to rule them all. If anyone doubts birders will spend the money, check out the sideline photos of photographers gathering to photograph the eagles at the Conowingo Dam. The original R7 is a major disappointment. If (1) the focus is more consistent and sticky, (2) the sensor is faster (reducing rolling shutter distortion), and (3) the mechanical / first curtain shutter is MUCH, MUCH QUIETER, an R7ii would be a compelling option. It might be what the 7D fanatics hungered for all along. It might just take over the entire bird photography market.

      The R7 does have issues such a the mechanical shutter, it is so violent that it makes it hard to use slower shutter speeds.
      The R7 was sold as being able to shoot 15+ frames a second. The camera cannot do this as the sensor readout is not fast enough to focus for those 15 frames. Canon must have know this before releasing the camera, I think this was / is borderline fraud.
