  • I discuss the rumors of the R7 Mark II and detail my thoughts on whether it really could have a stacked image sensor. I talk about what I think its resolution might be and why. I'll also go into where I think a camera of this type will probably be priced.

not to be a Debbie downer or putting your video down, but those "reliable' sources" have been horribly wrong lately.

  • @FraterABYA

Personally, I have been repeatedly disappointed by almost everything from Canon Rumors in the last 5 years. I don't give it much credence anymore.

  • @marvinlovenfeldt

    R72 maybe in 2025. It's unlikely in 2024.

  • @DAVE_WHITE

Rumors are a waste, 90% end up being flase there is a lot better things to do in life then worry about rumors,, wait until the official release..

  • @derekv6479

I have a feeling they're going to give us a stacked sensor to alleviate the horrible rolling shutter, but do it in a 24MP sensor. Why Canon, oh why?!?!?

  • @davepastern

Phil - I would add to my prior comments - better weather sealing from Canon, including IP certification like OM systems does. Canon, Nikon and Sony say their gear is weather resistant, but if you take it out in the rain, even light rain, and water gets in, they WON'T cover it under the warranty, which is misleading and false advertising on their part. Disgusting really.

This would be great. I will not get too excited too soon. When I moved to Sony I got away from the waiting for Canon to get with the program. As far as rolling shutter. Not an issue for me with my Sony A7RIV which has even slower readout. I just shoot in bursts 2-4 for BIF per burst so no issue.

  • @naturealbums

I gave up with that rumour site years ago waiting for the 7DMK3 that never happened. I did get the R7 it's good but yes rolling shutter is the bad you detail it perfectly. It will do for the moment still get nice images and works well with my nice old lenses. I'm also hoping on a Nikon stacked apsc and it would likely be a more feature filled camera than a Canon based on the past (7DMK2 vs D500). So faced with a choice I think Nikon may still get my money this time whether it's apsc or FF because the Z8 is looking too tempting.

I understand the need for improvements on the R7, but I wouldn't give Canon carte-blanche on the price tag. I've enjoyed the R7 and use it probably more than my R-5 because of the reach with the 100-500 lens. It has always given me great photos and was much more affordable than my R-5. Also, a bit bummed about the R-5 never getting any upgrades just the promise of a newer version at a higher price. The R-5 owners have gotten a raw deal in my opinion.

It would be GREAT if Canon makes the R7ii the R7 bird shooters were hoping for from the beginning. Faster sensor and processor. Blackout-free, faster EVF. (A higher res EVF would be nice, too.) Bigger buffer. Those would likely fix all that ails the R7. We certainly don't need MORE resolution -- because we don't want more noise. We can dream. (But I suspect Canon has other projects in mind.)

  • @Chris_Wolfgram

OMG Phil ! Truer words have never been spoken ! LOVE my two R7's as well, but they definitely need some improvements, and a stacked sensor might be freaking fantastic ! But at the very least, if they just sped up the readout speed a lot. Like as fast, or a bit faster than the R5. Considering that camera is 3 yrs old, this doesn't sound like an unreasonable request to me. If they dropped the mp's by any at all though, I'd be completely bummed. I sometimes need to crop a lot. Even using a 1280mm equivalent combo.

  • @raygiemza3690

Thanks for sharing your thoughts, Phil. I got into bird photography and acquired an R7 when it first came out. I've enjoyed the camera ever since, but have bumped into the R7 issues that you mentioned. Meanwhile, I have been anxiously awaiting the R5 Mk II. Now, with this new R7 Mk II rumor, I have something else to consider. However, as with all Canon rumors, I try mightily to temper my expectations. I would probably bite at a newer version of the R7 if it has the improvements you mentioned, even at $2500. But, I also see myself succumbing to the allure of a full frame Canon camera in the future. Can you direct me to the nearest poor house?

  • @TBGTOMPHOTO

I'll be on the pre-order list.

  • @prjct72

I would love an R7 with stacked sensor too! First problem? How much are people willing to pay for a crop sensor camera? 2nd problem from Canon’s point of view, increasing specs/price will cannibalise R8, R6, etc

  • @allenreams2600

Phil, your thoughts are very interesting. I’m still not sure if 24 MP would be enough for me, however if it were done I would consider a R7 II.

  • @raylander6329

Just talked to my wife about a new Canon aps-c camera that would be great for our wildlife photography. The R7 II would be great; I would not Mind if they changed the two weeks on thee back of the camera to something simpler and more effective, so we can keep it similar between bodies. Good video, Phil 😊

  • @forkintherode8236

I bought into the Z system which I like, but I think I’ll jump into the R7 II due to the great Canon glass my wife has. With my stacked sensors I see no issues. Thanks Phil

  • @Beaver-be8vk

Oh I heard. 😆 I will be getting it if it lives up to these expectations. I use the electronic first curtain. I wish I could use the electronic shutter. Doesn’t bother me. The auto focus is annoying at times though.

  • @alisonandguywildlifephotograph

I agree…I’ll be disappointed if the r1 is low mp… having had a couple of 1 series bodies and now r3.. I’d like a high mp r1 .. but maybe a choice in one body.. say 50mp… raw…and 24mp… high speed 40fps raw cont. I just love the feel of my 1dx mk ii… but the r3 is technically miles ahead… I’ll probably get a r5mk ii otherwise…we don’t need another 24mp camera….also so many rumours it might come down to availability… going back to Africa in September if nothing happens by then I’ll probably get a second hand r5

  • @weekendwanderer5514

I chose the OM1 over the R7 for exactly those reasons. The stacked sensor on the OM1 virtually eliminates rolling shutter, warping and EVF blackout.
