I learned something new from you Vivi. I have been gardening for 35 years and have never, ever heard of storing beans at this stage. This is fantastic. So much more flexibility. Thank you!
Thank you so much Vivi. This video was very educational. I loved that you took the time to explain the different terminologies that we use here in Canada. I did not know that a broad bean as you call it, is a fava bean. I am trying to eat healthier so I am growing different types of beans this year for the first time, and was feeling a little unaware on how to deal with them all. I had a lot of AHA moments watching this video.
Terri Plaunt - likewise, I didn't know you called broad beans fava beans! I'd heard of fava beans but thought they were something fancy!! Funny old World 😜
Great idea! I'm guilty of tossing some in the compost, because at the end of the season there always seem to be a few pods that haven't dried yet and are still green. It never occurred to me to freeze them!
Fabulous video, Vivi! After watching your channel over the months my son (8 years young) and I are going to grow lots of different types of beans next year. Just got our first plot so we are noting down all of your wisdom! Now we know how to store! Thank you! X
Thank you Vivi! Just picked all the big stringy runner beans and thought what a waste, then I cut one and out popped a lovely pink bean so I watched your video to see what to do with. Can now grow for wee beans and big beans!
@@WhatVivididnext well you’ll laugh but I was going to cook them, somehow blend them and give them to my 2 geese who aren’t very pleasant at the best of times let alone when presented with terrible grub 😆
Hi Vivi. Could you not make layers of beans in the tray, using paper between them, to freeze larger amounts? Lovely looking beans by the way, What a naturally decorative vege they are!
It never occurred to me that you could do that! And I've been pulling off all the big pods and throwing them on the compost. Maybe I'll go back and see if I can rescue some! They would be so pretty in a salad as well.
Our beans were eaten by rabbits 4 times (!!!!) So we are on sowing no 5.surrounded by a lot of wire netting. Our beans are only just getting going so I hope they will keep on until September otherwise we won't have much of a crop - and we love beans !
Yummmmy! I store veggies like that too Vivi. It's really works out well. I do my okra like that too and it works great. Ive also know people that put their peas(shelled) in a pillowcase and put them straight in the freezer. No flash freezing, no blanching, no nothing. They just get out what they want to cook. Great info my friend! ✌🏼️❤️& Happy Harvesting🌸🍅🌽🌶☀️🌙
Good idea Have been freezing green beans and drying herbs Wish I had more fave beans You have inspired me to plant more food You have a well planed out garden Thanks for sharing
Hi Vivi, I have been on a Chick Pea kick as of late but those Broad bean, Fava beans for us here in the States looked wonderful and made me almost crave something I have never ate LOL.I looked at 3 stores here and couldn't find them.Call me crazy I didn't even look for dried or canned you made the fresh look so good that's all i would settle for ugh.Cross your finger for me will be hitting up some farmers markets soon. Thanks for sharing Vivi.
If you have a garden/veg patch you could try your own. Not sure of your climate but I put mine in during October for harvest in May. Hope you can find some to try - yum! :-)
Just refreshing for my bean storage from your video again Vivi! I think I have followed this video for 3 seasons but I always forget, but I know you are safely stored in my SAVED garden section! Now I just need to find your video on dried beans and putting jars in the freezer.I can never remember if I have to boil them if they have been dried .......now where did I save that one?! Thanks Vivi! PS I hope you get paid by RUclips for the times we go back to view over and over!x
Hahah, cheers lovely. The dried ones go in jars in the freezer for 3 days.....then take the jar out of the freezer, let it come back to room temperature and then transfer the (still dry) beans to your storage jars ready to use for cooking......at which point you need to the over-night soak and boil the next day. 😊 The freezing is just to ensure any bean weevil are killed off and won't hatch in your storage jars the next spring!
Thanks, an idea (if time) is to put text below. Since i only want the steps when in a hurry and also focus the camera on the produce, because when you are doing it as you listen. You just stand waiting for 5 minutes in the kitchen waiting to know what to do, or trying to fast forward to what to do with them.... You could speak while they are being put in the freezer or after. I could then make notes, save, like etc. Love the video though and will heck out the squash and pumpkin one next. Thanks.
No need to soak as they're not dried - treat them as you would if you'd frozen the pods....ie; out of the freezer and straight into a pan of boiling water for about 10 minutes. :-)
Great video and will definitely try this....but have a question about when you bring them out of the freezer how do you treat them? Do they have to be soaked first and then cooked or just put in boiling water or stock and cooked in the liquid?
I take mine straight from the freezer and boil for about 10 mins (depending on size to a degree)......then toss them into soup, stew etc or leave to cool for salads. :-)
Have you ever had black beans or kidney beans? I love beans as well and garbanzo , black and kidney are my favorites. Hahaha, oh yea - love pinto beans too!
I don't bother with the blanching, no......however if you are planning to store them in the freezer for more than 6 months many folk advise it. I have had beans from the freezer, non blanched, after a year and they were perfectly good....so the choice is yours. :-)
What Vivi did next Great. I’m at this moment flat freezing them. I podded the mature runner beans (not dried on the vine) and put them straight into a large jar to store and after a couple of days they were sprouting shoots! So after coming across your vlog I’m a lot more wiser! 🤔
Hi am having trouble viewing the recently uploaded videos,......is anyone else experiencing this? Am missing watching them. Can anyone recommend a fix?? Usually view on a kindle fire. Thanks
Vivi I love beans but they don't like me - so much pain and gastric upset : ( Any suggestions? I was even on a low FODMAP diet but it's so restricting : (
Beans are a bit notorious for causing gastric issues (bloating, gas, cramps etc)......I think the only thing you can do is to avoid them unfortunately. :-(
If you willing... How I do it is a generous pinch of bicarbonate of soda , rapid boil for 20min drop that water and rinse thoroughly using a rice strainer. Then proceed per normal

Yay to planting more food! Good on you. :-)
I have cut young green beans n one inch lengths and dehydrate. They can be thrown into soups later. Longer lengths result in leather britches.
Perfect for soups later on! :-)
I also ferment mine together with other veggies I have going on the lotty
:-)
Perfect timing to find your video...froze some and boiled some tonight to add to soup.... the greyish color they turn is unappealing but tastes ok
I always think it's such a shame they don't keep their gorgeous pink and purple colours.

Thanku for sharing Viv as i had no idea how to freeze them :) x
You're welcome.:-)
Thanks for sharing this I thought all shell beans, what my parents called them, had to be either blanched before freezing or canned.
I would blanch them if I wanted to keep them longer than 6 months........but for shorter term use they're fine just chucked in. :-)
Just the info I was looking for. Thank you!

You could make a soup from them.......but remove the pods before eating as they'll still be stringy and tough.

I boil them straight from the freezer for about 10 minutes (less for really small ones). :-)

HI Vivi, what is the UK/US name of the red bean you showed? Just started planting beans this year.
In the U.S. they're called scarlet runner beans. The flowers are scarlet, but the beans are black and purple when fully dry.
What Michelle said! Cheers, :-)
What Vivi did next Thanks Ladies!
your not going to starve all this produce you are preserving
No. ;-) Hopefully it will see me through to the start of next spring/summer. :-)
