  • “If I just drove off the road, it would all be over. Everyone would forget about me, and it wouldn’t hurt anymore.” But Erin knew that wasn’t the answer.
When Erin was growing up, home was never a safe place for her. She was physically, mentally, and sexually abused by the person who was supposed to protect and take care of her. When she told her mom about the sexual abuse, they left their home.
Finding her way after they left home was difficult. Erin stopped going to church and started doing things she thought would make her “happy.” But she never felt true happiness. After Erin graduated from college, the traumatic experiences she had suffered as a little girl came to the surface. She still saw herself as the little girl who thought nobody loved her. Physically she had healed, but mentally and emotionally she still had deep wounds.
While living with a family she’d known in New York, she mentioned to them her self-destructive thought about driving off the road. They immediately came to her rescue and helped her understand that she had depression. After going to an emergency clinic and receiving medication, her recovery began.
The childhood trauma Erin experienced contributed to her depression, and she needed a therapist. This therapist helped Erin face her past and understand that it wasn’t something she could ignore. While attending therapy, Erin also turned to God, and she began to see herself as a person worth loving. God gave her the strength to work through her challenges.
God’s grace was in the courage He gave Erin to find the resources she needed to begin healing. Without God’s help, Erin’s life wouldn’t be as beautiful, as hopeful, and as wonderful as it is now.
If you or someone you know has been abused, seek help immediately from civil authorities, child protective services, or adult protective services. You may also seek help from a victim advocate or medical or counseling professional. These services can help protect you and prevent further abuse.

    Bold, important video.
Heeling is a process that will need to go on for her. I am 62; I was raised with violence from father and sexual abuse from mother. Later found the gospel. The Atonement is such hope. Prayer is crucial - have a prayer life.

Christie Jensen Dear Christie, sorry for delayed reply: Absolutely yes, the pain healed nearly entirely, and it happened little by little when I lived close to God and His infinite grace-kind of like immersing in it. Reading Word, and talking with God and lingering in prayer just listening. Please know it gets better. Hope! 💛🙏🏼

My wife grew up in an abusive home. When I married he I never knew at the time how bad it was. Over the years and 7 children latter she only gotten worse. Medication and prayer never helped. She doesn't talk with any of her children or grandchildren and she really doesn't know they exist I guess. I'm grateful this gal could be healed, because physical and mental abuse is real and does major damage.

been there. I'll be 67 years old in a few days and only joined the church last January. I'd made a lot of progress, but still struggled with caring for basic needs. I finally feel that people care and I'm not alone. It makes all the difference. I really think I can finally do more than survive, I can thrive

This is so meaningful and on many levels. Growing up, I referenced God through my parents. My perception of Heavenly Father and my relationship with him was patterned after my relationship with my parents. Deep down, I thought that God expected of me what my parents expected of me. I believed that God saw me as my parents saw me, and what they wanted for me was also what Heavenly Father wanted. I broke through the barrier in prayer and found my own relationship with Heavenly Father, a new relationship. I learned Heavenly Father has his own eyes to see and how much He wants to be accessible and close to me.

Lord is the only who one can satisfiy us to our desires, rejections, pains and all in this sinful world is what we experience, living life without putting God in everything do its hopeless, its perseverance to make us strong but God is always here for us eventhough how hard we are experiencing we just have to believe and trust in him eventhough i'm still struggeling in my life one day this will all end, let days that we have here on earth be a living life as it is in heaven to deny ourself and walk up the cross with God.

As I was watching this, I felt like it was me talking. Heavenly Father has led me throughout my life to professionals, people and friends that I needed at certain times in my life to heal. I am 58 years old and still healing. I do know that sexual and physical abuse does not mean we are unloved. It isn't fair to suffer because of someone else's sin. But I can look back over my life and see where I have grown because of my experience, we can turn it to positive with the help of our Heavenly Father who loves unconditionally. Thanks for sharing your story.

I developed what I call my "Miracle List". Did you see a beautiful flower today, was someone kind to you today? Miracles come in all shapes and sizes think of the good things that have happened in your life; even if it is just one small flower, and write it down on a list. When the stone in your sole seems to be too big stop and read your list. The Good things in life are what we should focus on. When you see a miracle like that beautiful flower remember to tell God "Thank you" I say it out loud.

To access the healing power of the atonement requires faith. Abuse often times creates many stumbling blocks to that faith and sometimes other things are needed to remove those blocks so that it can be fully accessed.

Exercising faith means also going to therapists when necessary. God wants us to use the inspired tools out there. All good things come from Him. I often hear people saying " all you need is the atonement ". Having access to His healing power means do what we can. When you have a illness you don't only say prayers. You also go to doctors. The same is when you have emotional and mental problems. You go to professionals. That's what I believe.

I’m not religious myself but this video gave me hope. It makes me feel better knowing that I’m not alone in this type of situation. I was raised by a single father and grew up with 2 older sisters. We were all abused verbally and emotionally and physically for our entire lives. My sisters left to live with our mom in California when they were in their teens, but my father manipulated me into staying with him, demonizing my mother, and feeding me lies about her and forcing them into my brain. He continued for years until I was about 18 years old, lashing out at me, hitting me, screaming at me, and breaking me down. There was one incident, relatively recently, where I tried to fight back, which made him even angrier. He forced me down on my bed, and wrapped him arm around my throat from behind and squeezed as tight as he could. I was flailing and panicking and the next thing I knew, I woke up screaming in panic. My dad was still standing over me and cornered me against the wall on my bed. I could barely breathe I don’t know what went on, other than he choked me until I passed out. He could’ve easily killed me and showed no remorse for his actions. I’ve since been allowed to move in with my girlfriend of 2 and a half years and her mother, and haven’t spoken to my father since the day I moved in with them. I don’t hold any hate towards him, but rather a great deal of resentment mixed in with absolute terror when I think about what could’ve happened that day.

Father gave me the strength to face the challenges in my life. Without Him I would be dead now. Now I don't dwell on the challenges I have, I face them immediately asking Father for the strength now to face them. I used to push them to the back burner, & try to forget about them. Maybe they will go away. It always got worse. So facing them now lifts the burden. I don't have to be afraid anymore. Heavenly Father will always be there with me. I not ever alone. I will always remember I am a child of Heavenly Father.

my mom is abusive, since I was a child. all of my family knew it, my father too. but all of them do nothing, and just watch my mother locked me about an hour in bathroom since I was in playground. she think it was good for my mental to get stronger and ready if one day I become an adult. but she didn't realized, I got depression and it was hard for me to study since I was in middle school. I used to hear some noises of her screaming at me and I'm crying for no reason when I was in highschool. and at that time, I became moody and all of my "friends" just hate me. most of them wont take me as their chairmate or even take me in their study group. they think that I only want their attention, and they start bully me. they think it was helping me. my ex-boyfriend almost got me died in a car crash because he was jealous. after that I talk with some psychologist and they asked me to go to a therapyst because my case have connection with trauma and I will need some medicine. all I need is love and someone beside me, you know.. I just want to share my story here, for who you are who reading this, out there. I hope you got a better life than me, and please if one day you have a child... treat them well :)

The music was way too loud. It interfered with the story and with being able to hear her talk and to think about and understand what she was saying. I know Erin!! Wow. Erin -- Thank you for sharing your story with us. You are so kind to others, and so friendly. I am so sad to learn about some of the awful things you went through as a child. I'm glad that you were finally able to get some therapy that helped you. May God continue to bless you with peace. May He also bless you with everything you need in life, and wonderful people to surround you.

For anyone suffering from abuse reread 2 Nephi 2:1-2. All these things can be concecrated for your gain. It's not what happened that continues to make you suffer. It's what you believe about yourself because of the abuse.

Sometimes we're so hurt that healing is a difficult to even comprehend. Sometimes it sounds like people expect everything to just be fixed and be like they were before; in my experience, nothing ever goes back to the way it was before, but we life can become better. Jesus Christ understands our pain and has real power to heal all of us, even if it takes a long time. Look for faith in Jesus Christ. It won't hurt, and it will help.

Healing means different things to different people. With mental health and spiritual support, education and appropriate resources, a measure of healing and improvement in one’s quality of life is absolutely possible for each person. Jesus often doesn’t take all the pain away, but as we receive His grace and learn and apply what we experience in therapy, relief increases and anxiety and hopelessness decrease. Our ability to tolerate life increases and we learn to cope in a way that feels better. And when flashbacks occur and we experience setbacks, we then have a support system to Lean into instead of isolating, the Lord himself being the most important part, and also therapists, counselors and trusted friends. There is hope, a measure of healing and peace to be found in Jesus Christ and in well-trained, qualified mental health professionals.

Look. I’m very happy she got help and became ok. The thing that strikes me here, as a person who has grown up in LDS central and was raised this way but is no longer, is that now it is ok to call “Heavenly Father” “God”? When I was growing up that was in no way, shape, or form ok. ... is this a new development?
Honestly I just know it is because when I was a teen and was trying to be more accepting towards my friends of other faiths and still had an extremely strong testimony I began to use the word “God” to try to meet them in an agreeable place. When I let it slip in a religious conversation with my mother... she flipped out.

I bit God doesn’t really care that much if you say Dear God, Papa God, Heavenly Father, Dear Father, etc. He is just happy to hear from you. I think that sometimes people get hang up in the cultural aspects of the religion, which is not part of the gospel. But if you grew up calling God certain way call him that way if that’s more comfortable to you.

To the first comment Carl Williams, you are obviously not a member because some of what you have said is complete nonsense. If there are people reading this who are not LDS, then please don't believe this. If you want to know what we believe just go to LDS.org

I am very sorry that you suffered this abuse as a child.
I was abused as a child in the church by church members.
I stayed a Christian for decades until I researched the claims.
I no longer believe in the supernatural.
We have similar starts and you believe and I do not.
That makes you wonder if there is a god then what gives?
I am no longer a christian and if asked will tell people that I am simply unconvinced by the claims being made.
I have no good reasons to think the supernatural is anything more than people making stuff up.
Once again sorry that you suffered as a child and that you were indoctrinated (just as I was) as a child into a religion.
I am now looking at '''why''' people are convinced to then believe.
    Thanks Gray
