The best character, by far, is the guy who is in fugue for his whole life except for when he is awoken to paint the official portrait of the new Emperor. Wonder what he thinks about that? Does he just love painting? Does he yearn to be back in fugue? How long does he take to paint the portrait? Is it Bob Ross?😂

My favorite character is probably Khan Segara. The quiet in book one got me invested into the series but Khan Segara is where it really sunk its teeth in. The fact that there was this absolutely ancient figure in the universe, from childhood hero stories no less, that was still kickin' it and holding influence in his own way is just super rad. Everything that happens throughout the series only serves to heighten how cool I think Khan is as a character.

I just Finished Disquiet Gods yesterday, and it was incredible. I just hope you know you are one of the best working science fiction writers working today, along with Pierce Brown. My favorite Suneater character other than Hadrian is the Emperor, which when I started the series I wasn’t expecting. In modern sci fi fantasy, emperors are too often either evil or incompetent. So it was a pleasant surprise to find a strong emperor who actually cared about his people. He still has flaws, and yet he seems to be a good man doing his best in the worst situation. He invokes some of the greatest Roman emperors, which are some of my favorite historical figures to learn about. Brilliant work. I’m honestly gonna be bummed out when Hadrian kills him.

Syriani is my favorite character because he perfectly represents the tragedy of the Cielcin. I loved the little details in KoD like the hand grab that show that Syriani and the Cielcin as a whole have the capacity to have good traits and emotions. His intelligence and learnedness make for him and Hadrian having some of the best conversations in the entire series. Syriani shows what the Cielcin could be while also being the best example of how far they have fallen from their original purpose.

Lorian. I really feel like I shouldn’t have to explain but he’s just so vivid to me. From the first time he is on the page I could just see him. All of the characters are well drawn but he was just immediately endearing to me. I really feel like I could see him and his mannerisms so clearly.

Man, I feel like I have to come up with a less cliche answer, but I gotta say my favorite character just has to be the man, the myth, the legend himself, Hadrian Hlafmortal. The fact that we get into his psyche and his head, so deeply, with such masterful writing and characterization, for so long, six long books, in his first person frame of mind, just gives us such an unparalleled character experience that we can’t get from not only many other characters (maybe except Valka) in Sun Eater, but we can’t get that kind of thing from any other author for the most part. His flawed nature, ultimately good heart, being thrust into universe-shattering circumstances, his love for languages, which I also share, and his intelligence and historical knowledge all being called upon at the opportune moment in the narration. I mean wow. While the other characters are great, It honestly makes me think the only reason people don’t say Hadrian is because they feel like it will be too cliche. But he’s so fleshed out and feels so real. I’ve never read a character like Hadrian, ask anyone who knows me.

My favorite character is Hadrian. Because how could it not be? He starts out as an idealistic kid and the world slowly beats that idealism down, and not just his hope of peace. Just like all of us.

My favorite character is Valka because I just can't resist such a smart and and badass woman. I love how she challenges Hadrian where he needs to be challenged but also supports him when he needs it. The fact that she started learning the Cielcin language after Hadrian and got better at it than him is not only funny but it also tells you so much about her and her love for her work

I haven't been able to finish a series in literally decades, and I'm 5 books strong on Suneater! My favorite character so far is Sagara - I love the legends and how truly undying he/she/they are. Great series!!!

  • @dreero_
    @dreero_ 5 месяцев назад +2

Cat is probably my favourite character because I thought that she'd be a mainstay character only for you to rip my heart out only a few chapters later. It also serves as the first time that Hadrian sees how the "little people" live their lives not being of palatine descent, and it makes him reflect on mortality. I think it is a major turning point for Hadrian as a person and it really sets the tone for a lot of future interactions in the series.

Kharn Sagara is my favorite. He gives me the exact same feeling I got when reading the finale of Goblet of fire when I was a kid when Voldemort shows up. It’s the presence he has. It’s rare for me to read villains who give off that level of presence on page for me. I don’t want the book, I just wanted to talk about my favorite character lol. Also his design on howling dark is so good that’s its favorite book cover of all time.

Might have to be Pallino for many reasons but i still laugh out loud at the part when he's telling the story about going through the tram security kiosk holding his eye. I was watching one of your conversations (with Mike that Book Guy I think) and you mentioned that (along with Dune), the Hyperion Cantos was an influence. For some reason I had never read any Dan Simmons, so I did that. OH MY GOODNESS, that was clearly a huge influence. I saw gods working backwards in time, time manipulation in combat (linear vs parallel but still), vast black underground labyrinths, biomanipulating exosolar evolved humans, a catholic church vastly 'evolved', 'casual' death and resurrection, manipulative entities in an alternative dimension opposing the reverse time traveling 'god'. I even think I see some similarities to the shrike's description to your rampaging aliens. I definitely appreciate now understanding some more of the underlying authors that you drew from. I was having trouble seeing as much 'Dune' as people were saying, but adding Hyperion into the mix, I understand more. Now, all that said, your saga is far far different and I am still eagerly awaiting the rest of your work..... Bad Sanderson for eating your homework, Bad!

My favorite character is Valka. She has a knack for putting thins in perspective. BTW, a few weeks ago, while listening to “Kingdoms of Death,’ right after one particularly dark session I found myself drawn to listening to Soundgarden’s “Black Hole Sun.” It wasn’t a conscious association at the time, but the tune kept running around my head since while listening to your books, so something was triggered. I think it’s an apt anthem for that volume, as well as for much of “Sun Eater.” May 18th was the anniversary of singer/songwriter Chris Cornell’s death, so it popped up on my radio driving home after dark from my local pub, which was eerie. There’s an excellent article in Wikipedia about how the tune came about, what Cornell was thinking etc. You may find it interesting. Thanks!

Alastair Marlowe - I know he is Hadrian through and through, but simply a version of him who went down a different life path. Life has shaped him to be more distant and iron-fisted. He sees Hadrian's optimism as a mirror of his younger self and resents him for still having that which he himself has lost.

Try not to worry too much about the Diamond editions being late. You've done all you could given the circumstances. It really just means that you're genuinely care about your fan and really do want the absolute best for them!
As for a favourite character I have to say it's probably a tie between Kharn Sahara and Lorian. Kharn because he's basically a space lich sitting on a decaying throne of forbidden knowledge and that imagery is essentially burned into my brain forever.
And I live Lorian because I always have a soft spot for the overlooked underdog who manages to claw his way into relevance through vicious loyalty and genuine ingenuity.

Uvanari, from Empire of Silence. So important because because by having interacted with it, Hadrian, in looking back as he writes his history, can never shake his utter guilt and despair at having annihilated an entire race, and gives him his unique, melancholic voice----a narration that, for example, even in the middle of the desperate, chaotic battle on Vorgossos in The Howling Dark, registers on almost cellular level the anguish of the Cielcin when their world ship is destroyed---that sustains the entire series...On the other end of the spectrum, to me the most fun caharacter is Olorin, just because..

We see him navigating politics as the underdog, we see his crew all around him. Also thanks for the writing update and take your time. So, I just recently finished Empire of Silence and haven’t continued yet (waiting on my copy of The Lesser Devil to arrive). From what I have read, I really like Olorin and I think he was my favorite character from that first book.
As soon as he was introduced, he had this badass air about him and the fact that he carries around 3 lightsabers is pretty dope. Of course, he ends up giving one to Hadrian at the end which was one of my favorite scenes. And when he tells Hadrian that he will have his back whenever he needs him, I know that we must not’ve seen the last of him. I can’t wait for more Olorin.

It’s so insanely hard to choose a favorite character, because I love/hate all of them with great vigor. My number one might be Syriani Dorayaica, I think it’s interesting to have a barbaric, predatory alien warlord who’s also kind of a religious scholar, who shows a genuine interest in human history and culture, even if it’s for ultimately nefarious reasons. Although, honestly, my favorite’s probably Hadrian. It’s hard to top the POV character.

My favourite character would have to be Crispin as even though he was chosen by his father to be a fighter and he didn't want to do it he still stepped up when needed and valiantly protected his sister in The Lesser Devil as well as the people in the village. He exuded bravery, confidence and fighting skills when it counted the most.

Don’t stress about the Diamond edition delays. Shit happens, and you and Steve have been transparent with us the whole time.

Been thinking about which character is my favorite.....and I just can't come up with one. The characters are so intertwined with each other and the story...I found myself attached to all of them, which is part of what makes this series so incredible...you get attached to characters that have small roles, and you feel it when things happen. Love Had, love Valka...those are the two obvious choices but in the end there has not been a single character that I haven't liked or not related too-- (even Alexander had his moments).

Other than Hadrian, Gibson. I love how even though he barely has screen time, the knowledge he imparts on Hadrian is ever present, making Gibson feel alive and well throughout the series.

Favorite character = Valka because her term of endearment for Hadrian is barbarian in her native language, so cool

Hadrian is my favourite because it's the only character I know, waiting on the 7th book to read them all consecutively! It will be amazing, I am sure!

Woo! Stoked for Shadows Upon Time. Disquiet Gods was one of my favorites in the series so far 🔥
Also! My favorite character is Cat and I'm still low key upset she died even though that happened like 6 books/thousands of pages ago 😭

So many great characters. But I think my all time favorite character/story out of all the books so far in your universe, is that of Cat from Empire of Silence.

I kinda wanna say Vorgossos, as I love how the influence of Dante’s Inferno, Xanadu and Shangri-La (and much more) gives it a truely otherworld atmosphere and character!

Khan Sagara is amazing. I mean, he reminds me of Bloodraven/the Three-Eyed Crow from ASOIAF in that he's a creepy wizard living in a dark mysterious place, has a moniker involving "a thousand eyes", and is just generally a shifty fella. I had some pretty great expectations for Khan Sagara and I think those expectations were both subverted but also far far surpassed. Excellent character!

My favorite character has to be Hadrian. I just like how complex he is and doesn’t narrate himself as this perfect character. Shows how damaged and honest he is.
