Essay memorisation has proved an extremely effective exam technique for me. Having huge banks of stored words is so useful because the information can be retrieved so rapidly. Trying to think up an answer on the fly is much harder (in many ways it requires greater intelligence, although it's a much dumber technique). It is also very reassuring because you *know* that the memorised essays are first-class (either because you've received feedback from them, or because you've spend so long on them prior to the exam that they can't be anything but the highest quality). In contrast, trying to think on the spot in an exam does not offer the same guarantee of quality. Although it's impossible to prepare for every possible question, there can never be that many *types* of question, and there's no reason why words can't be pooled from different memorised essays to form a new answer to the specific question that appears in the exam. It's so effective that it almost seems like cheating, except for the fact that the only person you're plagiarising is yourself.
Essay memorization is fine, but thinking up answers on the fly is a skill that you also want to develop, and it requires less net work. Also, lol, I was once tempted to submit the same exact essay for my Molecular Cell Biology and Anatomy and Physiology classes. They were a year apart and were taught by different instructors in the department. I think I ended up using a different topic to avoid any plagiarism check nonsense, but it would have been an easy A for that near duplicate assignment.
Raised by good parents that expect results, firm but allowing for freedom of technique so that the son has his own vision that is applied for himself, a philosophy that works by hard work first, then constant improvement by effort, never cheating, zero procrastination, trying and failing, but having another go. Not plagiarising by twisting google language to fit! Application of systematic atomic improvements after reading THIS BOOK:- ----> *"Tiny Changes, Remarkable Results - Atomic Habits by James Clear".* also ... *ANKI, Buzan diagrams, used, which takes effort to use. This guy has his his own theory of mind, his own mind (memory) and how it works, then tricks himself to succeed. So he understands how to remember not just by tricks, but by the theory applied to himself in his own exams. A kind of effect of seeing yourself in mirrors facing each other - infinity!* Also, raised *not* like "Achmed the Dead Terrorist" and *not* like "Achmed the Dead Terrorist has a Son". (both funny comedys to watch and laugh a lot).
@@AI_Flight_Engineer This might be out of topic, but I know that Ali uses anki and in and of itself has a spaced repetition algorithm. Why does he still have to google docs his schedule and its difficulty when Anki can take care of it itself? THANKS!
Great techniques that I’ve managed to adapt to preparing for a job interview that involves a lot of recalling previous scenarios and linking them to guidelines and principles of the organisation. Very helpful… thank you
I’ve been to Cambridge too, and indeed there are two ways of getting a first: either you are tremendously intelligent and original and have a great memory, which you have trained in years and years of tough studies before uni, in which case you just focus on the subject and you don’t need to waste time planning and memorising essays like crazy (there are very few students in this category, generally those who end up in academia), or you do what this guy does, i.e. plan and memorise in a very disciplined way essays that could come up in the exam (that’s what most people do).
This works! This is pretty much my exact method for revising for my history degree essays and how I achieved a 1st in almost all of my 2nd and 3rd year exams & won the valedictory prize. My lecturers always commented on how much content I managed to get into exam essays - well this was how! It just floods back to you in the exam hall and it's the best feeling! I've sent this video to my daughter now because as her mum, I don't know anything 😂🙄 I'm hoping she will listen to Ali 🤞 Best of luck to all of you taking exams!
Same here ! Sometimes I feel tired of thinking about the left keywords, key events and Quotations during exams. All the things pops in mind like hell and then you have to build a structures of creative writing to put all these things 😢.
This is exactly the opposite of what being a genius or very intelligent entails. Memorisation can be done by parrots and you are not coming up with innovative ideas or tackling complex problems so the use of the word genius is really disingenuous here. For reference sake look at people like Newton, Einstein, Euler, Maxwell and how they revolutionised or established science through original thought not memorising things off a page. This is what's wrong with the education today, so much emphasis on pointless memorisation which can be easily outsourced to computers and google while there is no emphasis on conceptual understanding or original thought.
@@yt_nh9347 i had some collegues being in the range of 160+ IQs. All of them did not need to learn really, they just read the books once, maybe twice if at all, and then they aced the tests and their projects. Even the "normal" 130+ people had something similar going when it came to "learning". They never did actually need to work on anything in the same way, we normal people need to. So no, it is not far off what i wrote initially as a joke. And don't compare old shool "geniuses" like Einstein or Euler (which have been attributed to be in the 150+ IQ range, depending on source), as you are trying to compare apples and peaches here. You gave a really interesting vision in how to study so organised, looking up information, filtering this, categorising it and make flashcards. @@Saad-rf6ge This is completely hypothetical. Where is the proof of this? I don't care how intelligent you are, you're not going to score 98/100 if you barely study. UNLESS 'A' really really paid attention in class and gave his 100% during his school hours. But even then it's extremely unlikely that he's going to score more than 'B'. The reason for that is because school is not designed to reward intelligence. It's designed to reward memory. You don't need a high intelligence to memorize all the answers or prepare for an exam (An exam where you already know what to expect in terms of the topics that you will be questioned on). Furthermore, if you're intelligent but do not prepare for the exam, you're still going to perform very poorly. Getting a high/low score on an exam has little to do with intelligence. If you don't believe me, show me an intelligent person who doesn't prepare well for an exam and still aces it. It just doesn't happen

This made me realize how silly some classes are when you have to do all this mental gymnastics in order to regurgitate material that will soon be forgotten once a new semester starts. I feel like putting an emphasis on understanding the material in depth, rather than expecting a student to game the system, will be a more beneficial and efficient approach.
@@maria6451 when I was in uni, we had classes divided into lectures (which was pretty much the entire class of 200 students or whatever) and discussion classes which had only 20 students. We would do review in those discussion classes of the lectures (at least with some classes I took. Some executed this horribly) Ultimately, I cannot see a standard being made since every professor has the freedom to decide how to teach their class. But from my experience, smaller post lectures classes really helped me understand material as opposed to figuring it out on my own .

7:14 - Great way to do. Love it. What of this: all knowledge in the first sentence - say the summary of the paper in the first sentence then the rest of the paragraph that one has here is an elaboration of that.
Fun to see that this is pretty exactly the same strategy I came to over the years (and which turned out to be highly successfull). One more tip: You should always start memorizing the topics the day after you have summarized them. So you summarize topic A on day 1, then on day 2 you start memorizing topic A and summarize topic B, on day 3 you start memorizing topic B and summarize C, etc. etc with spaced repitition.

Ali Abdaal, do you take nootropics to help you with your memory? I highly respect your discipline.
What I'm more interested in, is how he was raised.
that is also what im thinking
A kind of effect of seeing yourself in mirrors facing each other - infinity!*
Also, raised *not* like "Achmed the Dead Terrorist" and *not* like "Achmed the Dead Terrorist has a Son". (both funny comedys to watch and laugh a lot).

Step 1: be a genius or very very intelligent...
Step 2: memorize just everything
Step 3: Rank A* on every test
step 4: forget everything 2 weeks after the exam
step 5: start memorizing same stuff again because you have upcoming exam.

The Red Hood ...
