  • In the middle of Israel’s Arava Desert, a farming community is bringing trees back to life that’s bearing fruit from the time of the Bible. A little, young-looking palm tree named Judith was planted on Kibbutz Ketura recently. And though she’s just nine-years-old, she carries an ancient heritage.

    An amazing story.
This date palm is a survivor as the Jews are.
    It is quite symbolic.
And this date palm returned back to the land of Israel 2000 years later, like many Jews did.
It is a symbol of Jewish people!

What a wonderful success story. I was in the horticultural industry in the 80s & we focused on bringing new plants from remote jungles of Jamaica & South America. Later i became a flower bulb collector & botanists from a group i was in, went to a remote part of the Atacama Desert that had not rained for approximately 22 years. Flower bulb seeds miraculously sprouted in the area after the rain, that had lay dormant in the frozen desert. One of my specialties was selecting mutations in millions of plants to create new plants to be named & commercialized. I would love to be working on those dates & would be fascinated by the differences in growth habits which was my job for many years.

Also what size would chicken eggs be from 2000 years ago? I get the feeling that they might be a wee bit smaller in the past than compared to what modern chickens produce these days. The stuff you get out of the grocery stores tend to be the biggest ones that are laid, and they can get pretty small.

SO.... WHAT DO THEY TASTE LIKE
The whole legend of the dates revolves around how legendarily delicious they were said to be. Maybe they were, or maybe in ancient times when dirt was a part of your diet, they were great in comparison to the cruddy food of the day. Judging by how no one exclaimed at how great they tasted, it wasn't anything special. At least they could have said SOMETHING on it.
Still the genetic diversity this revived date gives is a huge gift to the date industry and humanity as a whole. Modern dates are fantastic and some are insanely good, really natural candy.
