I'm shooting Canon, Panasonic and BMPCC. The R7 is not a match for the GH6. The GH6 is a B-cam to the Canon R5C !! That's how high up you need to get up in Canon cameras to have the same tools as what the GH6 has !!
The GH6 is also the first camera that does pixel shift stills HANDHELD !! 100 mpix !!
No, the GH6 is not for everyone. It's not a beginner camera either. But that's the reason, the GH5-II still is a valid option. And it's at the price point below the R7 and FX30.
On the shelf here: GH4 - multiple, GH5, BGH-1, GH5-II, GH6, Canon 5D Mk3, EOS R, R5C, R6 Mk II, R7, BMPCC 4k, BMPCC 6k and an original DJI Osmo Pro, which also is MFT. Which ones do I use the most ?? R5C and GH6.

compared to my ol trusty gh5, my experience with the 6 AF is, so far, not bad at all. it does in enough light detect humans and faces and tracks. faster processor, so DFD AF about as capable as it can get. funny had the pulsing on the gh5 in scenarios you describe, but so far none on the gh6. Listen. i'm happy. got a video beast for a low price, it ain't perfect but what camera is? gh6 color probably the best of all Lumix cameras. so go spend 2 grand for a g9II which as good as it is has some cripple features. Feeling in the hand, the GH6 is fantastic. I bought one at launch and it FELT great to shoot with but comparing the footage against the BMPCC4K, GH5S and GH5II there wasn’t much of an increase in IQ. Limitations of the sensor size. Ultimately, I switched to Sony and have NEVER regretted it. I miss the cinema features but at least now I have incredible low light performance an an in focus image. I use the GH5 for most projects but have a GH5s for anything indoors and low light. You're 100% correct that the GH5 (and of course 6) is just too bad in low light conditions (especially if you shoot log). People forget too that Panasonic have a great relationship with Leica and have released some native and affordable lenses. I'm slowly collecting the Leica Panasonic prime lenses. The 42.5 is probably the best I've used on the system. It's so painterly and is super fast at 1.4 to help with low light. You might want to also check out the Voightlanders if you need fast native lenses.
As far as auto focus, I guess you just keep having to practice and master it. I personally would love good auto focus. Just having a technology handle something so vital to small productions is so helpful!

Got the gh6 as my first big upgrade from an a6300 and a part of me has always regretted it after seeing the other options get released not long after like the fx30. (Didn’t help that the gh6 new price dropped 600 bucks to compete after I paid full price, siiighh) On top of that, the constant “m4/3 can never achieve that full frame look” on RUclips mentality just hurts extra. Agree with all you’ve said here about the downsides.
However, I also have to swallow the fact that the lacking of autofocus and so so lowlight is NOT the thing that has been holding me back in my pursuits, it’s ME. I genuinely love the footage off the camera most of the time and recognize I still have barely scratched the surface of the gh6’s capabilities.
Your clips in this video look wonderful! And I truly do prefer the panny colors over the more punchy/rich sony profiles.
Also finally bit the bullet and just bought the 10-25 1.7 as I felt like I wasn’t giving the gh6 it’s true fair try without pairing it with some of its best lenses.
It’s cathartic listening to you talk about this as it basically covers how I feel about the gh6 and the m43 system as well. Except I’m barely just starting compared to you, so I got no excuse!

    • @lyndonlabayan

Haha it's hard to watch my favorite tubers talk about that full frame look as I too can't really bring myself to care!
Anytime I've felt let down with my footage, it's been mostly because of white balance. So definitely not a camera problem.. that's on me.
One of my toxic traits is 'listening' to too many RUclipsrs who don't do what I like to do! Thanks for sharing!
Edit: that's the reason I picked up the 10-25 too! Also I didn't like traveling with the speed booster so being able to take just the 10-25 for a wide/mid is worth it.

And I will say the differences between top MFT cameras and full frame is largely negligible. For video, either s35 or mft formats are just fine (FF is larger than cinema standards). And for stills, the difference is almost unable to even be seen. Short of an A/B comparison on a large 4k screen. Take a look at some good testing done by Caleb Hoover, comparing the GH6 image with the same one taken with the S5II. I didn't see any differences that would keep me up at night. Plus, the GH6 has a high res mode that shoots 100MP images. Which I got to compare with the Phase One 150MP back camera (around $52k camera system). The image from the GH6 looked virtually the same.

First a G85, then added a G9 (underrated for video), and then I debated the GH6 or even a GH5S but ultimately decided that low light and price mattered, which narrowed it down to the S5 and GH5S. The ok but not great S5 IBIS won (vs no IBIS in the GH5S) and now I use S5 and G9 (the 4K60 no crop on the G9 beats the 4K60 S5 crop in good light). I will ask you the same question as I asked Gerald Undone a year ago and it's funny he did respond but never could give me an answer!
If mft is dead then please tell me what camera to buy that surpasses all it's features for the same or less money! If you can't give me an alternative then you have absolutely no basis in saying the mft system is dead. It might be dead in your little blinkered world of 'it must have PD autofocus' but in the real world and in the right professional hands this little affordable camera is like gold. Remember it's not just a video camera, it's an incredible raw stills camera too and can take sharper and higher resolution photos that Sony, Canon and Nikon full frame cameras more than double the price! When you sit there and say a camera of this calibre is dead I actually feel embarrassed for you because you have just jumped on the back of Gerald Undones mistake that he will now be regretting saying now that panasonic are rolling out their new PD autofocus! The camera does have a bit of noise in higher iso settings but these days noise reduction software is so good that we can live with a little bit of noise and after removal no one would ever know it had noise. No camera is perfect but the gh6 is the start of a new era in mft technology in my opinion and there are some huge advantages to using mft in low light over full frame. With a mft lens you can shoot at f2.8 but have a depth of field of f5.6 which keeps everything in focus in a night scene. Also in a night scene autofocus even on the best sony cameras is utterly useless. In order to get the same dof on a ff camera at night one might have to stop down to f5.6 which means increasing the iso to compensate. If shallow dof is required there are f0.95 lenses and also speed boosters available to achieve razor thin dof. The mft system is so incredibly versatile, I would argue it is still the most versatile lens mount in the entire camera industry. You will regret saying the mft system is dead just like I believe Gerald already is. Just wait till panasonic launch a gh6 ii with PD autofocus, not that it really was that essential but it will silence all the autofocus crybabies who don't understand the power, flexibility and absolute reliability of manual focus. If I buy a gh6 ii and it has PD autofocus, I guarantee you in the vast majority of situations it will be turned off!

Patrick Tomasso and Patrick Stylman made a video podcast and in this video Patrick a previous Lumix user said he moved from m43 (GH5) to Lumix FF, but never commit to Lumix because he was not sure that they will fix the AF. Then he moved to Sony for AF reasons. In that, more then 1 hour podcast, he explained what is missing in Sony, but he found this issue not a dealbreaker. i don't know if it makes sense to call yourself a "hobbyist". you get paid right? technically i think it makes you a professional. you get paid for your work. you're not necessarily "pro" in that you have the experience you would want in order to call yourself that, but even if others who do it full time may not like it, you are a professional wedding videographer.

I use the AF in face / eye track on the GH6. It’s much better and actually great. GH5 was horrific.

Atrocious autofocus as in : autrocious continuous video AF ? Also, it is now 2023......I found a nice GH6 for 1200 bucks US. Does that change the equation at all ?

    hah man, cam doesnt matter...
just your hand and exp. if u cant shoot with m4/3 - just go and learning again.
all new cam can give u brilliant image, sony, canon, nikon, lumix. full frame, apc-s, medium, micro 4/3. Every new cam... phone too. autofocus - not problem, use cine lens. low light perfomance - i cant nderstand, for what u take camera in blackhole?))
m4/3 have only 1 problem - so many people dont wanna work with hand.

It would be nice if youtube photographers would stop thinking that everyone else is a youtuber.
    But, of course, groupthink...

i use the Lumix S5 last 2 months and i sold it.. why ? so nice camera, nice quality, trash AF, now, i bought a Canon R7 and man.. you say the video quality can be "just good" .. is amazing that 4kfine this R7 produce.. amazingly good.. 4:2:2 10 bit CLOG3, 170MB/S , 4k60 NO CROP/or crop mode , as u decide, 340mb/s.. AMAZING DUAL PIXEL AF, good colors, SO NICE IBIS , nice grip, easy to use with canon menus,
I think the problem is the ppl just thinks canon is for photos.. is not.. now all the cameras can be hybrid and canon NOW is on the video party also.. maybe is NOT ( obviously ) like a panasonic cinema cameras like this gh6 or S5 or even the fx30 , but for majority people is more than enough the quality of the R7 produce.. just put an excellent lens and u have it.. like sigma 18-35mm with adaptor

Agree with you on all points. I'll never stop loving the 18-35 so any camera that can use it well is a great camera to me. Cheers!

Let's see if I get this: Your only two issues with the GH6 are its (lacking) low light ability, and its "atrocious" auto focus. Ok, fine. BUT, then you go on to say that its low light capability really isn't that bad. You even say it's good up to 6400, and in truth it's only low MIXED lights that you don't like. Since I never heard of a "low mixed lighting CHAMP" in cameras, I have to think the GH6 isn't any better or worse than any others for that narrow test. So that leaves the "atrocious" AF. Which in all candor, is complete BS. If you wish to say it isn't as good at AF than Sony or Canon, fine. You would be correct. But atrocious? You are so off the mark in terms of reality. The AF is fine for most uses, by most people that know the system. Which you claim to know, having used a GH5 for years. And if you actually did, and the AF bothered you, why stay in the system? And why judge the GH6 (with better AF than the GH5 had) negatively? We know it isn't it's strong point. Would you rate a Jeep not good on the racetrack? You could, but for whose benefit? That isn't what it's made for. And finally, as to film-work, most filmmakers don't care about AF at all. Few cinema cameras or lenses even have any AF. So, I'm still at a loss to understand the points your make, and then contradict.

He doesn't know how to manual focus (like most youtubers), so they blame the camera for their lack of skill

Who cares buddy, I use bmcc4k with t1.0 lenses + gh5 v log and also t1.0 lenses, and trust me, low light performance is amazing with little bit of lights setup help. Auto focus ? why, sure sometiems helps, but i cant even compare what gh5 gives if compare to a7iii, my videos got even better when started to use manual focus. I like gh5 better than fx30

I can't say I recommend it either. I use it only for 4k 120fps. Otherwise I use my S5 almost everytime, even my old GH5 gets more use.

I object to your statement that the auto focus is trash. I own the GH5 ii which has inferior auto focus and I would call it trash. During a recent shoot of a pickle ball music video the biggest problem was the camera couldn’t decide on which person to focus on.

    • @lyndonlabayan

That is totally fair and maybe it's only a real problem in the super high contrast scenarios like against sunlight/skylight.

You should compare Open Gate between both the GH5 and the GH6, the GH5 has less pulsing. Even in 4K 24/30fps the GH5 has better AFC accuracy when viewing the videos at 1:1.
