  • Europe has always been involved with Asia, and now it wants to be even more. Trade is the main area it wants to develop, and improving technology, connectivity and security also form parts of its offering to the region. These are set to be discussed at a forum to be held in Paris. It will bring together foreign ministers of EU member states and some 30 countries in the area known as the Indo-Pacific. It encompasses the countries located around the Indian and Pacific Oceans.
    They account for three-fifths of the world’s population, are central to global value chains and produce almost 60 percent of global GDP.
    That and Chinese assertiveness in the region has sped up the adoptions of Indo-Pacific strategies by not just the EU, but also the Netherlands, Germany and France.
    Ahead of the forum, DW's Sonia Phalnikar interviewed France's Ambassador to the Indo-Pacific Christophe Penot.

Any alliance against China is a non-starter if domestic politics dictate FOREIGN POLICY. EU must learn from the failures of the US foreign policy and engage with India and other Indo-Pacific countries based on shared "interests" and NOT INVOLVE THEMSELVES IN THEIR INTERNAL MATTERS.

    Many countries on Indo-Pacific/Asia-Pacific region were surely still have strong suspicions towards EU because some of the countries in there used to become the former colonies from some EU members. Sure enough any slight of signs that EU wants to dictate their will to the region especially in terms of natural resources will make every moves from EU falls apart to the pieces. Also, EU still facing trade dispute on WTO against some countries in the region for resources like palm oil, nickel, etc. So i'm not sure EU will able to plant influences on the region before those disputes were settled.

    Why is the EU so interested in the Indo-Pacific? I think this is a rather silly question. Why? Because the three countries listed here, Germany, France and the Netherlands, had been active colonizers of the region in question. In fact, France still has colonies in this region. France holds three territories in the South Pacific-New Caledonia, Wallis and Futuna, and French Polynesia.
    Dutch's colonization of Indonesia wasn't something it could wax lyrical about. Only recently Dutch PM apologize to Indonesia for the brutal treatments it handed out to Indonesians. In fact, none of the three colonizers could wax lyrical about their colonization in the said region.
    By why are the new-found enthusiasm? China of course. When America realized that its adventures in the Middle East and Central Asia are going nowhere fast, it decide that perhaps South-East Asia is a new place to spread its influence. Barack Obama made that decision even before Trump decided to pull out of the Middle East and Afghanistan. Again, China is the X-factor. It is not unusual that Europe follows America in almost everything it does. So South-East Asia, here they come.

    • @rollingdownfalling
      @rollingdownfalling 2 года назад +2

      Pretty good analysis, although one thing is not true, EU agendas differs from US agendas, I don't think Europe follows everything American does. Germany got sanctioned by the US before and the US had also tapped into Merkel's phone before which seems there a lack of trust there. And French president Macron just had a meeting with Xi last Wednesday before his current presidential term is about to end, And ofc there is the AUKUS which the French really hates.

    • @WalkOverHotCoal
      @WalkOverHotCoal 2 года назад +1

      @@rollingdownfalling Well, thank you. Much appreciated. I do agree with you that Europe's stars aren't lined up with the American, however, they didn't want America to have it all its ways in the region in question. While Europe, bar a few minion nations which wanted to please America in order to receive more aid, do not see tangible benefits in making life even harder for China,
      like America. Europe has its own self interests to mind too. The fact that Europe trades intensely with China demonstrates a symbiotic relationship between the two blocs with very different systems of governance. While Europe doesn't want, nor see good reason to dominate China, America is very different, as it has done so since the end of WWII.
      The way I see it, Europe wants to maintain a presence to tell the world that it is still relevant, which it has always been, I doubt that it will repeat the colonization ways like in the past.
      America, on the other hand, still believes that it is the toughest hombre on the block. While some people are now having doubts about that, but keeping up appearances is very important in international relations.

    • @rollingdownfalling
      @rollingdownfalling 2 года назад

      @@WalkOverHotCoal Well, America's key word is containment. Quite the imperialist in my opinion. Regarding Europe, I think your view on Europe is a little dated with exception to UK, because UK is more transatlantic instead of European in terms of Geopolitics.

    • @WalkOverHotCoal
      @WalkOverHotCoal 2 года назад

      @@rollingdownfalling Containment is the appropriate description for America and its "like minded" allies. When Barack Obama saw the writing on the wall that the Afghan war wasn't going to be one America could do a song and dance about, he shifted gear and decided that S-E Asia is going to be the new playground for America. The Middle East and Afghanistan were proving to be way too hard and expensive to hang around, and the fact that America simply couldn't get a monopoly on the oil reserves in the Middle East.
      But Obama isn't as smart a thinker as he believe he is. For a start, he made disparaging put down on Russia, calling it "a mid-range power. A smaller, weaker country than the US". What Obama didn't understand was that to disparage and insult a sovereign nation will only make them a more determined enemy. Anyone who plays sports knows that you don't want to provoke your opposition. I believe that he also underestimated China's just as he did to Russia. He thought America could simply walk in, plant a flag, and China will scurry off. What America doesn't understand is that while it was busy burning money in Afghanistan, China was building trade relationships and influence in S-E Asia. The recent hyper-activities by Australia is a clear case in point. Australia is, and has been a useful helper for America in the S-E Asian and the South Pacific region, competing for influence by sending in aid and blocking China's access to important telecommunication infrastructures.
      One would be naive to believe that China's presence in S-E Asia is benign, and neither should one believes that America and Europe's are harmless.

      Germany hasn't been an active colonizer in the region, or rather they were only briefly.
      Fyi, the main colonizers of the Indo pacific were the Portuguese (later replaced by the Dutch), the Spanish (later replaced by the USA), the French and the British.)
      In any case this is now mostly irrelevant, European empires made sense due to mercantilism and monopolies over goods (spices for exemple.) The modern EU is completely opposed to that and is mostly promoting free trade. Why now ? Well first because the Indo-pacific is economically on the rise, and second because like you pointed out, the EU is wary of Chinese ambitions.

    The problem with this EU Indo-Pacific forum is that it is led by EU and all other participants are secondary in importance. It is like the colonialists deciding on what is best for each Indo-Pacific country and everything seen through racial lenses. Besides, China is EU's biggest trading partner so without China the forum is pointless.

    The west think that they can shift the supply chain away from china to this region, that's why they're starting to look at this region with interest however that's not going to happen form the next 15-20 years as we know countries in this region don't have enough infrastructures to support the European needs, and of course no western investors are coming to invest either, poor democratic developing countries carry long term risk so they still prefer china, as we know that countries here don't grow that fast either

    Without Indias help, no other country can entry indo pacific. Even US has to work with India to be relevant. Japan is a weakening country with population decreasing every year and S.Korea is the same. SEA countries were never a super power in their history so they can only be a minor player. Australia is just a natural resource pit will most of it's population living in eastern corner of the continent.
    The countries I felt behind are just useless unable to feed their own people.

India up to Middle East and North Africa are already helping them actually 😁 even some US/EU companies already named their areas with MENA (Middle East North Africa) or EMEA (Europe Middle East). Really I am curious, are these companies operation in India are considered as APAC (Asia Pacific Australia China) or others?
