I ended up buying the Kindle Oasis about a month ago. Your first video helped me make my decision. I was hesitant mainly because of the price and that it’s not color, but I really wanted to try the warm light feature. My significant other had been complaining about the light from my phone at night. The oasis has solved that problem. I absolutely love it. I find that I’m reading more at night because I’m no longer straining my eyes. I do hope they make a color version in the future though. Thanks for your reviews on this. Super helpful.

I’ve owned just about every Kindle, except for the Voyager and the very latest Oasis “warm lighting” version. I didn’t realize how much I missed the physical page turn buttons until I bought the Oasis. The auto-rotate, the larger screen, the more even lighting, the 32 GB memory option, the faster processing, etc. made the purchase of an Oasis a no brainer. My Paperwhite now works as a backup for the Oasis.

I found this update review very helpful. I didn't see the original review, but this 6-month review really helped in making a decision for a future purchase. I currently use an early generation Kindle Paperwhite, and I like it more than the Kindle Fire, which I found to be not very intuitive and confusing to use. This review includes comments that are of particular interest to me, such as eyestrain, warm-lighting, battery consumption, and practical tips such as size (8 GB versus 32 GB) looking for sales, and removing the ads on the ad-based version. Very useful information for me, and I appreciate the straight-forward presentation!

I have an Oasis and a PPW (got both on sale). For me they serve different functions; the PPW is the device I take around with me (one downside of the Oasis is how big it is and the bezel with the buttons are massive making it not very portable) and use in the tub. I adore the Oasis for reading at home though (so the battery life issue isn't really a big deal for me). For at-home reading, I have a Fintie stand case that works a treat. I gifted my mother an Oasis as well this past prime day.
I highly recommend to everyone to wait for prime day/ black Friday sales for these devices. The Oasis went down to $180 or so this year, and the PPW to $80. Also, if you're not tied to the Amazon ecosystem and don't need the waterproofing, the Kobo Clara HD is lovely and has the warm light feature. I got that one as a gift as well when it went on sale this year too (to match kindle prime day pricing).

I initially found your channel through the first oasis review you did, and stayed because we have similar tastes in books!
I've owned kindles since they had keyboards, and also had the first version of the oasis. I now have the new one too, which I love, but I find the ghosting has times where it is persistent and doesn't go away, or comes back really quickly even after forcing a refresh by flipping the screen. Sometimes turning on and off again helps.
I also don't feel like I'm getting as good battery life as you said, but maybe it's turning on in my bag more often than I realise from the cover shifting around. I had a few days off and was reading for 5+ hours a day, and I was charging every other day. 🤷‍♀️
PS I'm really enjoying making my way through the Dresden Files reviews, I'm doing a reread of the first 15 to get to the new ones, half way through #15 now. Thank you for your content!

I just bought the normal kindle. It only cost £70. The basic kindle does everything I need. It is lightweight, it can store thousands of books, it has a backlight, and the screen is glare-free. If your a student (like me) just buy the normal one, you'll save yourself £40 and get all the features you need. If you wanna go for a higher model, go for it. My one suggestion is, If you love reading, buy a kindle; since I have had one, I found that I read 30 per cent more than I did before.

Great review, nice presentation. I love the Kindle Oasis, which is my first e-Reader this year (due to Covid closing our library doors for some time). However, the battery life is not as great on mine as on yours. I read in bed at night (with the bedside light on) for about 30 minutes, and in the day time I read about an hour. The battery runs to 10% within the week, and when charging it rarely gets a 100% charge, stopping at 99%. Still, I love the ease of use with the Oasis.

The book cover problem baffles me. I haven’t had this problem since adding the “resize cover” plugin for calibre. Even if I copy and paste a cover from google images into calibre, as long as I click the resize cover before transferring. It works with kindle email or usb side load. There is an output setting in calibre to use old or new mobi file, so maybe try checking that. I use old and it never fails.

The Oasis flip case I have is a canvas-covered one with a cloth backing that works well as a handgrip--I actually think it feels fine to hold the thing with the cover flipped back, better than without the cover. But if the inside surface were more slippery, that would be a very different story.

@@kylier6073 okay so I bought the 32 gb without ads... so I went all out lol. I got it for 219.99. If I recall... the 8 gb with ads was about the price of the paperwhite or a little under the normal price.
I have no regrets... I love the Oasis. It is the first and only Kindle I have owned though... and I’m very satisfied with my purchase. I love it for Libby and I like buying some ebooks here and there.

Regarding waterproofing, I live in south FL and while reading on the beach or at the pool, the Oasis and PW will overheat. When they overheat I take them and dip them into the water and they will instantly cool and begin working again. No damage. 👍🏼

I just got the Paperwhite 8GB for Prime Day at $79....I contemplated the Oasis but I've held both in the past and read on both, and while I prefer the screen size of the Oasis, I hate that bevel that sticks out...I don't enjoy the physical way it feels in the hand compared to the Paperwhite. Funny how we all have different readings needs. But thanks for your reviews, they have been very informative 😁

Your original comparison video is what encouraged me to make the jump. I positively agree with everything you have said in this video! I do have an audible membership and I love the Bluetooth capabilities. However, the cover issue, what I have found is that I use my middle three fingers and place them between the eReader and the front cover (when it is folded back) then my pinky finger holds the front cover (folded back) in place. Not sure if that makes sense, but it allows me to hold the oasis like it should be held and then my pinkie finger stops the cover from flapping all over the place. It took a little to get used to but is surprisingly comfortable. Maybe try that and see if it works for you! If your wife ever considers an upgrade but values the size have her check out BOOX, they have surprisingly reasonable e-readers with the warm light, usb-c and you can read kindle or nook books. I did not find this until after I purchased my oasis. I still wouldn't trade it but I got the note air for my school documents since I can download apps from the Playstore. Happy reading Mike. I love your videos!

I have Kindle Keyboard - 3G. It always worked like a charm. Love the buttons. Have hundreds of books on it. Used it all the time for at least a decade. Last week I am reading a book on it with about 1/3 battery power left when suddenly the screen goes totally blank. Tried all the methods I could find on the internet to get it started without success. Ordered a replacement battery and that didn't work either. Yellow light comes on when you charge it for about 8 seconds and then goes out. So depressed ! I have to decide whether to buy Kindle Oasis (must have buttons!) or whether to try to find a refurbished Kindle Keyboard. Mike, your review of Kindle Oasis is very helpful, especially that your review is based on six months of use. Thank you.

Picked up an Oasis on 2020 Prime day and saved over $80. My old paperwhite had gotten lost in the move and trying to read on an iPad was killing my eyes. I love the Oasis though I have the same issues with the case (I just use one finger to hold back the front flap to read one handed). I'm kind of surprised at how much I love the buttons to turn pages over having to use the screen every time. It really makes a big difference.

I have the same case and while I love the curved back for convenience, I don't find the case an issue. I almost always hold it with my index finger between the back of the case and the front flap, while the other 3 hold the flap closed. I know it sounds silly to explain it but that's how I've managed to comfortably hold it and still enjoy the added grip of the device shape.

Bought one based on your last review. Just retired and now reading 2-3 hours a day so decided it was worth the investment for me. I am very happy with it as well with somewhat different opinions. 1. Screen size increase is terrific. 2. Love the warm light feature. 3. Love flexibility of page turns. Buttons and screen touches. Use them all depending on reading position. 4. I do find battery life is lacking. I am charging daily to every other day. My paperwhite lasts forever.

Reading on the kindle fire you can also make the warm light or white text with black backround.

    • @TheCrazyCanuck420
      @TheCrazyCanuck420 2 года назад

Main difference is you are looking at a back lit screen whereas kindle devices are forward lit (like sunlight hitting a page and reflecting into your eyes). Inverting white-black background-text isn't good for your eyes and neither is backlit screens especially in dark rooms. So the warm dimming is just a minor part of why the Oasis is easier on the eyes.... I'm surprised they don't market that more.

I am happy with my paperwhite and have thought about getting an Oasis, but have held off. One of the main things holding me back is the lack on USB type C on the Oasis. If I am paying that much for a device it better have the newer standard charging that all my other devices have.

I loved the Paperwhite for years, but didn't use it enough as I should. The Oasis was a game changer for me. For me, the warm light feature is worth every penny of the high price. But I love the audiobook option, too. I read a great deal more now. With that said, I will never, ever give up my physical books. My strategy for book buying is, checkout books from the library (Kindle or physical) and them purchase a used copy of my most loved books, and/or buying random books from my local Friends of the Library Bookstore super cheap.

I have had mixed results as well, some battery quality is lower. Amazon had been great for returning if the battery feels like a lemon. That said my old kindle from 2018 oasis gets gets about a week off battery reading 2-3 hours a day

Use airplane mode, I read for around 2 hours a night and get 5-6 weeks out of a single charge. The WIFI and Bluetooth are battery hogs so shutting them off makes it a very low power device.

Thanks! Mine's on the way. My current PaperWhite is about 3-4 years old and is a little battered with a couple of small screen cracks. I'd been eyeing the Oasis for a while but the regular price for the 8GB version - $70 extra for import taxes into South Korea - put me off. And then, wow, last week the price dropped to $196 and those import taxes disappeared! Weird thing, I can't find a cover on Amazon that's in stock and/or ships to Korea. A friend has one without a cover and he's ok with that, but I do like pretty covers.

My 2015 paperwhite is slightly faster than my newer 2019 paperwhite version. And I have more content and side loaded books on the 2015 if that matters. I would like to get an oasis, but I can wait. BTW; I am so grateful for conversion softwares and being able to side load my books. Issue with cover page - I follow one thing... from epub, i convert into two format one .mobi and one .azw3 ... the one with .mobi shows up the cover page but supports only preloaded fonts and .awz3 format supports cool custom fonts... so when finish reading, i delete azw3 and keep .mobi which retains cover page.

I upgraded to an Oasis from an older Paperwhite recently on Prime Day when it was on sale and am so far very happy. I love the buttons, and the screen looks and feels so much bigger and clearer. Now when I look at my wife's Paperwhite the screen seems so small and the text is not nearly as crisp. My only problem with it is the battery. Maybe I'm doing something wrong but the battery is noticeably worse than my old Paperwhite. It will still last a couple of weeks reading about 30 minutes to an hour per day but the Paperwhite would last a couple of months. It's not a huge deal since I usually just read at home but I do have to charge it more often.
