Hey bookworms! Apparently I have insulted some of the white knights out there that feel they need to fight for my wife's honor. Maybe I wasn't clear, but my wife had zero interest in an Oasis. She ONLY wanted the Paperwhite. Hope that clears up everything.

If she likes reading on your old paperwhite that is just fine, nothing wrong with that. I got my paperwhite last Sept and I love it. I couldn't decide between the paperwhite and the oasis, I went with the paperwhite because it is cheaper.

Excellent video and well-done. Thank you.
I want to upgrade - I would really LIKE to upgrade from my 6th Gen Paperwhite to Oasis, but until Amazon comes up with a something that has a remote page turner control (wired or wireless - I don't care), I won't shell out those big bucks. I, and a LOT of people (Google "Kindle Remote Control") that have limited arm mobility need a feature like this.
Didn't think about the Oasis fitting in your back pocket, but that's definitely a con.
What's with Amazon advertising the Kindles as "Ad-Supported"? Are these ads different from what's displayed on the sleep screen? If it is, then that's definitely a BIG con for me.

What you and your wife decided is your business...period...end. Seems like the male and female “Karens” want to take over people’s lives these days. That said, I had a first gen with free cell so you could download anywhere but when it died I couldn’t justify that anymore so I traded it for a paperwhite.

@@manishajain7808 dude, honestly, get a tablet or something. the lack of edit features on kindles likely won't suit your purposes. I strictly, and i mean STRICTLY, only recommend a kindle for voracious and avid readers such as myself, though I do not and would not recommend any ereader (let alone a £300 kindle oasis) for reading pdf notes and internet articles. this aint it chief, and- as a side note- no need to mention your class.

      @najZSwe 4 года назад +2

@@deedee6175 Honestly... If you like to read and have other devices for other uses than reading or possibly listening to audiobooks; then it's worth getting a Kindle. If you want to spend more to get the Oasis; if you still think it's a device you will benefitfrom... But if you aren't completely committed to spending that much buy the Paperwhite. Both devices are great for reading books; but as you see in this video there are of course benefits from the Oasis; bigger screen; better ergonomics; lighter device; upgraded lightening (Such as more leds and warm white/cold white options instead of just cold white). If you still feel a bit indecisive; I would go with the Paperwhite since it's less of a commitment financially. It's better to go with the cheaper option, because after watching Mike's review... Well, if the Oasis was for you; you'd order it before asking here^^

I’ve been using my Oasis for about a month now and I am in love. The only downside for me is that the battery life isn’t as long but as you said, I’m not sure if it’s something in my settings or what, but I should probably look into it. As far as the page turn buttons, that alone makes the Oasis worth the extra money for me because I’ve always struggled with deciding on reading paperback or ebook. That little click gives me the same satisfaction that turning a page does.

In regards to the use of Calibre to side load books, you can always just use the kindle email address that you get to send your files to your kindle. This has two benefits: 1) those files are now a part of your kindle library and you can re-download them directly from your Amazon account, and 2) I haven't noticed any issues with cover art from side loaded books that way. I used to use Calibre, but now I rarely do so unless I get a free book download and they don't offer a kindle version.
Also, I love seeing the Robert Jordan, Brandon Sanderson, and Stephen King on your bookshelf.

Just download the book, rip the drm automatically using a plugin with calibre, then mail it to my kindle so it’s in my kindle library. Very nice. I read about 5 books a week, so a pretty avid reader. I also agree that I'd much rather have a review about a reading device from a reader than a tech person because then it's easier for me to understand and I can know if it's work getting it from a reader's perspective. I'm a lefty too so can relate to your wife's frustration! I really enjoy my Kindle Paperwhite especially because of the soft back lighting, how it reminds me so much of reading a book, that I don't have to worry about damaging if a bit of moisture gets on it and there's no glare to worry about while outside. The only gripes I have about it is the button on the bottom which I tend to hit a lot by accident and the lack of color for book covers so I very much can relate!
Thanks for doing a review on the Oasis as I thought about going for it before I went with the Kindle Paperwhite but couldn't justify the price even on Prime Day for myself and am glad I stuck to the Paperwhite which I did get on a Prime Day last year and got the one with bigger memory because I have so many e-books. I always have a book with me too whether that be on my phone, Paperwhite (also love that it can fit in my pocket) or a physical book and I don't think it's any stranger than taking out a phone either to be honest. I also have a Kindle Fire (2015) that I also love to use for comics or graphic novels but it's on the slow side because it's been used a lot in the last five years.

I have a Paperwhite 5.12.4. and I LOVE it. I'm a voracious reader and wanted the clearer text, the no glare touch screen and the changeable brightness levels - all big improvements over the original Kindle series. My Paperwhite fits in my purse and goes all over with me, especially if I know I'm going to be waiting somewhere. We've had a lot of illness in our family lately and wait times in doctor offices and hospitals are much less stressful when I have the Kindle. It saved my sanity last year when my husband had a health scare and we spent 13 HOURS in the hospital, most of it in the ER waiting room! I read 3 books and was able to relax, which helped to keep my husband calm.
This model matches my wants & needs; the extra 'bells & whistles' in the Oasis are not worth it to me. I LIKE what I have and will stay with it as long as possible.
Interestingly, I was given a Kindle Fire last Christmas. It's nice to have a little color now and then or if I want to surf the 'Net a bit rather than read, but it's not that great. If I'm going surfing, I'll do it at home on my big screen PC - much easier.
To me, having the Latest and the Greatest is just not that important. I want what meets my needs and is comfortable to use. Needless to say, the Fire doesn't get much use. Like you, I happily read on my Paperwhite at least 4 to 5 hours a day.

Thanks for the review. I've been thinking about upgrading for a few months now. I have a Fire tablet and a Paperwhite. The Fire is great for anything with illustration plus I use it for casual games and videos when I travel. I'm one of those girls that loves to read in the tub or jacuzzi, so I've been using the Paperwhite for that and for on the go. (You're not the only one reading in the checkout line!) I'm constantly switching the same book between devices depending on what I'm doing. Hi! So great to stumble across your channel. I have been a part of the Amazon Kindle community starting with just the reading app on my computer since 2008. And now have had my paperwhite since 2014.
My first reader before the PW however was a Kobo, it did not have a light so ya had to use a clip on or be outside or by a lamp. The one thing I loved about the Kobo at that time was when it went to sleep, it would display the cover of the book you were reading. I really liked that. But I decided to upgrade after much research to the PW, because of the light and books were actually a bit less expensive via kindle. (I still have my kobo app with my books that I had originally purchased which is nice) So it was nice to get back to the Amazon world, considering I had prime by that point.
Thank you for doing this comparison.
I am waiting for color E-ink before I upgrade. I sure hope Amazon gets in on that!

By the way, audiobooks don't take up as much disk space as you think ; large books like The Eye of the World only take up approx 400Mb, so you could easily put an entire series, or two, on the device and still have plenty of space for normal e-books ( using the standard 8 Gb Oasis, as opposed to the 32 Gb ).

Helpful and thorough review. I love my Paperwhite. It has been a game changer for me as a reader. I had a first gen Paperwhite, which finally started having some problems so I replaced it a few years ago. Most of my books are obtained through my library system (pro tip: if you don't give your Kindle wi-fi access and instead download your books via usb, the library can't remove the books from your Kindle at the end of your borrow period. This allows me to borrow as many library books as I want, load them up, and read them whenever I want). I like the idea of the larger screen and the warmer color, but the glass screen and price don't tempt me to replace my current Paperwhite at this time. I've gotten good at reading on the Paperwhite with one hand, so that's not a selling point for me.

A con of the Oasis 10th gen over the 9th gen for readers with PARKINSON'S, Amazon has removed the ability to disable the touch screen from the 10th gen. It was essential for me. Random finger movements associated with tremors, which is not all the time, will tell the touch screen to take you on an unplanned trip through your current book. It takes some time to get back to your reading. An alternative for disabling the touch screen is a piece of clear plastic from your home improvement store, cut to fit. That's a nuisance. I prefer having the feature on call when I need it. Amazon refunded my 10th gen purchase.. Gen a new 9 while they are still available.

From someone who also has Parkinson's, I have the same device in this video and I don't use the touch screen unless I'm switching books. Usually i only use the two buttons on the side. For my eyes though, this is the most comfortable reading experience I've found in a tablet; almost as comfortable as a real book. Good health to you!

    Nice review!
I think the reason why it’s not colored is the e-ink which is also the main reason why it doesn’t hurt your eyes. But if they have the technology to be colored soon, that would awesome.

Not gonna lie, I love Jodie Whittaker as the Doctor but the actual story choices that the writers are making are making it hard to like Doctor Who these days.

Great review. I have the 2018 Paperwhite and doing a lot of nighttime reading and finding that my eyes are really struggling, and that is why I've been thinking of upgrading. Appreciate all your honesty and input.

I use the scroll function on my iPad when reading instead of the page turner is that on option on the kindle oasis?

Infinite scroll? No. I wish. That’s the only thing I miss from reading on my iPad.

Thank you for the review! I was researching my first e reader and your opinion and talking points help me make my decision! Love to get an opinion from a real reader and not a tech person.

I have both, and I LOVE the Paperwhite's battery. Oasis burns through its battery even with Wi-Fi off in about a week

Turned off the WiFi and that helped the battery life a lot.

My wife seems to get much longer read times with her Paperwhite and I also recall my Voyage doing better. The Oasis battery is smaller and considering how small the battery is, the Oasis must be fairly efficient. I once calculated that the Oasis battery in the newest version, before the warm light choice version, gives me 12 hours of reading. Subsequent, reading seems to confirm that. The one good thing is that the Oasis correspondingly charges fast because there is less battery capacity to charge. It will usually last me the day, and I plug it in when I go to bed. (Yes, I read a lot!)

@@mikesbookreviews Not exactly on point, but my wife's Paperwhite seems to restart frequently, more than any possible updates could be occurring. Have you ever experienced that or heard of that happening?

What version is your paperwhite? Mine is from 2014...not sure about the version but my battery lasts for like 2 weeks...I see that reviews on the new Paperwhite have said the battery isn't as good.

I ended up finally getting an Oasis. My Paperwhite 4 has been glitchy for over a year and I know it will be awhile before another is released. Took the plunge, thank you Amazon payment plans lol. I have to say that I'm in love with the Oasis. I didn't expect buttons, the warm lights, the feel of it, and the extra screen space to make so much difference. I didn't think I'd like the metal back but I love it. I'm surprised I have so much chemistry with it, you never know until you try with some of these devices I guess.

Just found your channel. My first Kindle is the Oasis. Mainly because it said less eye strain. Your review confirmed my decision. Thank you!
