HP laptops are the worst for getting in side! I'm talking 30+ screws before having to rip open the keyboard and getting in that way

I agree, I had a HP 250, spent 2 hours trying to figure it all out, 1 of those hours trying to get the keyboard out (my first laptop dissassembly) and the laptop was cracked inside, and I lost some screws lol. Well at least I fixed the throttling issue, which was my goal.
      Which one did you have?

I, as a HP serviceman of some sorts, can only agree. For example, they gradually moved away from the Battery being user-replaceable. Nowadays, the most modern ones have the RAM on the other side of the mainboard, which requires you to disassemble the mainboard AND the battery. (As of the X360 series)

@@TomCushnie ahh with my HP 250 the HDD was easy to replace, getting to the CPU was the hard part as you had dissassemble basically everything

This is actually something I actively do myself personally as a hobby when I refurbish laptops so I will share some insight and hopefully this will get noticed.
    * I would put a heatsink of some sort on the chipset since it's just bare right now, something like what you would put on a CPU from a Raspberry Pi would work or one of those older styles Zalman ones for GPU's are a good bet. This will help the laptop last longer more than assist in performance since it gets really hot. Just watch the clearance you don't want it higher than the cooler itself and ensure there is nothing that will prevent the bottom cover getting on again (you could use some thermal glue for this so it won't come off again just be sure to make sure it fits good 1st)
    * I would replace the optical drive with an ODD to HDD adapter that's nice and dirt cheap, this will expand your storage and give new use for that HDD you took out which could handle storing your games while your SSD runs the system. This is something I personally do (My current daily driver had 2 HDD bays and an Optical drive so its now a 120GB SSD + 2x 500GB HDD system)
    * As you pointed out adding another Ram DIMM is a good idea :D
    * I would also look at upgrading the WiFi card if it's not at least a dual band AC card with Bluetooth 4.0 or higher just to expand on what the laptop can do and connect too without more dongles (for non-gaming this helps me on my daily driver laptop with a Bluetooth mouse :D )
    * As for the CPU my advice is to try to look up the model of the laptop and check the series of models it has, then see what other CPU's it offered and you could aim for the highest or higher end one from that list which is a safer bet in case it has a whitelist system, just be sure of this though. Check the Intel ARK for what the TDP is of your current or highest end offering for that model and don't exceed it with your upgraded CPU. Laptop cooling is normally designed with a small range of CPU's in mind and it could overwhelm your cooler easily otherwise :D
Hope this helps you or someone else in the comments

When you get the upgraded CPU, I recommend getting some Thermal Grizzly Conductonaut and pasting it up with that instead.
You'll probably need it, because an upgrade on the CPU side is going to dump a lot more heat into the finstack, especially if you upgrade to a quad core part, and you want to make up for that as best as possible.

Nice video :) Good to see that the CPU can be upgraded, as well as the RAM. My HP laptop came with just 1x 8GB stick, so it's great to see that second slot where you can just shove another stick in :).
Out of curiosity, how large was the old HDD? HDDs aren't that bad in my opinion (and experience), and in most cases, a HDD will be sufficient given a decent enough CPU.
Also, for your information, I have an Acer Aspire 5742 that overheats, which I'd like to look at one day. That's not as promising as yours though, because whilst a lot of components are easily accessible, the fan/heatsink is on the underside, so the entire motherboard has to come out :(.

Hottest day in the UK only 32c?
We got 41.6 that month here in the Netherlands. I thought the UK could get hotter.
Or was this just for that year up till then?
Looking at how quickly my old core2duo Dell E6400 boots compared to this machine, I'd say it's a bit of a dog :D. Still, fun to play with. I'd do the same.

My 2010 HP Elitebook requires you to remove the keyboard to access the CPU, GPU and one of the RAM slots (that's a dumb decision), but luckily the keyboard is held in with a few little clips that you can pop out easily and then the keyboard lifts up. I just ended up removing the screws that held the keyboard in because the clips did a good enough job, so that meant to get at all my internals I only had two screws that held on the plate above the keyboard with all the hotkeys and power button on it. It's a hot running laptop, but still a beast for daily tasks with an SSD, so I try and keep it maintained with high quality thermal paste and lots of cleaning out.

i would advise you to compare the TDP from both the i5 and i7 that you want to buy. If its too high, you could get bad temps later on. Maybe look for some cpu support lists for that mainboard or just rely on other configurations that were sold. So you know an i7 or one specific cpu would work fine.

Ssd. 16gig ram. Kingpin thermal paste and maybe a copper shim for extra heat disperse, new fan, and CPU would turn that thing into a solid entertainment center laptop. So cool to see older hardware become like mew with other ways of it being used.

i7-3740QM should work with FPA988 socket the i5-2410 uses...ups the TDP requirements from 35W to 45W...will stress the thermals more though....

I can really recommend liquid Metal Thermal Paste. For me it dropped the over all temperature from 80 to 50°C

Don't worry about the temps with an i7, I have the same laptop and put an i7 4712mq (37w tdp) in it and it's great. Same temp wise as the i5 4340m (3.6ghz boost) I had in it before.

The missing fanblade is going to resonance throughout the entire system and stagnate airflow. I'm not sure how it broke, but as it did, replacing it is always a good idea.

  • @Fender178
    @Fender178 5 лет назад

Re-Pasting is a good idea because it will make the laptop sound less like a jet engine. Also a mobile quad i7 will help with the gaming performance. Also a new fan will help as well with the cooling performance.

When applying thermal paste to open crystals, it's always safer to spread it. Even if tiniest corner will not be covered after rice grain method, it can be dangerous in the long run.

Haswell was the last intel mobile cpu lineup to give you the option to upgrade your cpu unless you had the U or HQ series. once broadwell came along that's when all intel mobile cpu's became intergrated, which sucks.

You buy a drive caddy so you could replace the dvd drive with the included hard disk incased inside the drive caddy while still having the ssd on harddrive bay.
