    I just picked up a set of McCallum poly mouth blown smallpipes. They are SOOOO easy to play (although they do have traditional style drone reeds and a cane reed in the blowpipe).

    Nice sounding set of pipes, me personally I have plenty of pipes to play. A set of Naill bagpipes, Walsh Shuttle pipes and a one of a kind set of Walsh small pipes in the key of A, B flat and D.

    I was actually thinking about purchase a new set of smallpipes recently, and these were on my short list. I was a little concerned about the tone of the chanter though. We purchased all Macallum practice chanters for our band, primarily because we would spend so much time trying to get similar tuning from the three or four pipers whose personal chanters were Gibsons.
    Most of the other pipers in my band have Walsh or Macallum smallpipes and we sometimes play together in session environments. Have you tried playing these against either Macallums' or Walshs'? If so, is the low G tuning distracting?

    Good video Matt, thank you. Thinking about the comments re the drone reeds, would it be possible to substitute the supplied reeds with Eezeedrone smallpipe reeds (others are no doubt available) to overcome this problem?

    • @MattWillisBagpiper
      @MattWillisBagpiper  Год назад

      It might be possible, but you’d likely have to try quite a few different sizes to find reeds that work. I suspect the purpose of these pipes was to have PC reeds for the drones…

  • @joannedenison7650
    @joannedenison7650 Год назад

    just noticing. but you would think for $1150 and some small change these would come with a computer program to guide you thru the tuning. I think that's entirely reasonable, don't you?

    • @MattWillisBagpiper
      @MattWillisBagpiper  Год назад

      Glad you're enjoying the videos! That said, no, I don't think a pipemaker supplying a free tuning app with a musical instrument is reasonable (don't know of any other instrument maker doing that). These pipemakers are fantastic at working wood, metal, cane, and leather... All those are very different skill sets than computer programming. Many of these guys tune by ear and not technology in any case.
      It takes a lot of time and effort to make a set of pipes; if anything, I think most all bagpipes are underpriced for the amount of time and materials that go into making a set. But that's just my opinion.

    • @joannedenison7650
      @joannedenison7650 Год назад

      @@MattWillisBagpiper not sure about that. tons of kids coming in that can make complicated stuff and they also do the programming, but I have two kids in IT right now and they love it and one of my kids is an engineer (my daughter). In fact I love computers and making things (I'm an engineer too). in any case, I have tuners so it's no biggie. Hope you're doing well and I love your videos. They have a great vibe.

    so why are you doing the tuning work of the manufacturer which they should be providing a program, app or whatever for? you should charge them for this. lol. I am sure they're not worried.

    • @MattWillisBagpiper
      @MattWillisBagpiper  Год назад

      Why would a bagpipe come with an app? The environment greatly effects the tuning of the pipes, so the makers can’t just tune them on site and send them out perfectly tuned.

    • @joannedenison7650
      @joannedenison7650 Год назад

      @@MattWillisBagpiper I would image you tune them at set up and then as needed like a violin. The app just tells you the note, nothing else
