    I was in a window seat for a flight that took off almost an hour late. I was worried about my connection (obviously). I told the couple in the other two seats where I was going, assuming I caught the flight and it was on time. They understood how important it was to me to get there. So as soon as the seat belt light went off, they stood up and blocked the aisle so I could get out. And one of them grabbed my backpack out of the overhead compartment for me. Fortunately, the connecting flight was departing from the same concourse. I ran as fast as I could and when I came around the corner, the gate area was empty but the door was still open. The gate agents called me by name and said they were waiting for me, as they knew the lateness of the flight I had just come off of. They shut the door practically on my heels, and I got to my destination on time. (My suitcase didn't make it, but it was delivered to my hotel before bedtime.)

      I had a similar experience, but I loudly asked the entire flight to let those of us with connections off first. There was about 10 of us that scrambled off to catch connections. This was at DFW, so naturally I had to change terminals and my gate was at the very end of the concourse. I yelled down to the gate "I'm on my way!" and same as you I was the last on with the door shut behind me. Phew!

      Wow that was so sweet, I had a horrible experience with American Airlines Las Vegas to DFW with a connecting flight, I was in a wheelchair the girl pushing my wheelchair was so sweet she ran pushing me. We still missed our flight and was stranded there at 11pm with everyone leaving and locking up. The people on the plane and at the airport were rude and judgmental, I don’t look handicap but I’d had 2 recent back surgeries, and have been 100% disabled for over 20 years as a result of a broken neck and having it fracture and then having it removed and repaired. I’ve noticed that AA and DFW airport are becoming more and more racist. They will be the next major class action lawsuit.

    A few flights back, United cancelled a flight that was the first leg of our international trip. They had to re-route our entire trip with a new itinerary. On each new flight, we explained the situation to the flight attendants they ALL went overboard with food, drinks and offered us anything they could to make our trip that much more enjoyable. On our last flight, we brought gift bags for all our flight attendants (my wife is the Tom Ford rep for Nordstroms) and even though we were seated in Economy Plus, they gave us all the perks of first class. I highly recommend bringing your flight attendants gifts! It is now our go-to thing for international flights.

      @@NimseyLou We typically bring 8 little gift baggies stuffed with perfume samples and lotions. We try to make at least 1 or 2 of them filled with men's cologne samples and men's lotions. We hand them out as we board the plane. We end up with champagne and extra goodies right after we are seated. During the whole flight, every one of the attendants come up to us and say thank you. We love showing our appreciation to those in serving roles. Whether it be flight attendants or a waiter/waitress at a restaurant, we appreciate their service. God has blessed us in many ways and we want to share that with the world.

    I started ordering special meals back in the 1990s - back when there were free meals in Economy. The special meals tasted better. These days I travel domestic first class when I can, and rarely order a special meal, as they taste worse. Besides, I have yet to see an airline offer my ideal special meal (low carb / keto or paleo). So I pre-order from the regular choices.
    Way back then I also started asking for "a full can of seltzer, please." I still ask, but they often open a large bottle so there are no full cans.
    My one suggestion is to ask for what you need, but don't be greedy. You don't need a dozen snacks for a one hour flight!

    • @danielkim9453
      @danielkim9453 4 месяца назад +2

      If you can afford first class, then you can certainly afford to order a nice special take-out meal from an airport restaurant. Stop complaining.

    • @vegangelist
      @vegangelist 3 месяца назад +5

      @danielkim9453 ummmm.... if you pay extra for first class, you should be able to enjoy those nice perks. Full stop. Those are pricey snacks and meals so expecting them to be reasonably tasty isn't a huge ask.
      I've always been a southwest gal but, recently, had an opportunity to fly first class on a couple flights.
      I've loved it and it has been enjoyable but, for the price, I definitely expect the quality to be good.
      You are basically saying: you bought and paid for a luxury vehicle so don't complain if the fit and finish is like a Yugo because not everyone can afford a luxury car and you can at least afford to have it upgraded. When one of the reasons to buy that luxury car is for the fit and finish and the inclusion of that quality.

    • @jensc73
      @jensc73 22 дня назад

      Domestic first class in the US is certainly better than economy, but compared to international long-haul flights it's probably equivalent to premium economy. You will get from west to east at a little more than a thousand dollars, and many shorter flights will cost you in the hundreds - not thousands of dollars.
      Some international first class flights will set you back tens of thousands US dollars. They might include limousine pick-up service, escorted fast track, a private compartment, top brand amenity kits, very expensive drinks and dining, top rated service etc., and your needs and expectations will be met.
      From a domestic first class flight you cannot expect much.

    On a few flights I took recently with Southwest, we had some close calls with connections but luckily they were all Southwest flights, so the thing the attendants did was they announced right before landing that they would halt deplaning to allow those who had connections that were less than 30 minutes away to deplane first and on that flight there was maybe 10 of us (mine was actually scheduled to leave about 10 minutes after we got to the gate, but luckily the gate I had to go to was only two gates down so it took me less than 5 minutes to get there but it was a close call). Some airlinse will do this, and one reason that IF you have to have a connection, it's best to have it with the same airline as this will make it easier (in my experience) to get on the next available flight should you miss your connection. if using different airlines, then it's more tricky. But I would say if you can avoid it, it sometimes is worth paying a little extra for either a longer layover (like at least an hour, and maybe 2 depending on the airport) or just flying direct/non-stop. It's less hassle and in some cases, you may get to your destination hours earlier if you just fly non-stop (but this is not always the option in various cases, and then I'd just try to find a flight with a longer layover particularly if you have to switch airlines or even wings of the airport (A, B, C, D, etc) as I've had this happen too, where I had to go across the airport to get to another gate on the other side, all in about 30 minutes, which it took about that to get from one end to the other (but that was partially because we had to go from a jet to a regional turbo-prop which had gates at the other end of the airport -- same airline, just a different area because of the smaller aircraft as they didn't use jetways for those types of planes at that particular airport (CRJ200s, turbo-props, etc).
    Personally I have to say for SW, as much as they get bashed by customers, and some of it is earned, I'd rather take the free checked bags over having to pay for wifi, as in many cases SW's prices are competitive (maybe a little higher, like $10-$20) but this is still cheaper than paying for a checked bag which can be $30+ depending on the airline, and honestly I just make sure my phone or tablet has enough stuff on it to keep me busy during flights (either work or entertainment, reading, etc). Even if it's only $5, I'd rather not pay $5 for wifi for a flight (even a longer one) as I can just relax and realy dont HAVE TO have wi-fi (some people may if they have work to do before landing, that's understandable, but for me, I just plan around that and don't plan on doing anything that requires wi-fi while in fight).

    Dream on. At least on domestic flights, recently I’ve found them fully sold. If you have a tight connection, or if your flight is late and you might miss your connection, forget about them letting you deplane before everyone else. Everyone gets up and struggles getting luggage out of the overhead and you will miss your flight. You have to depend on the kindness of your fellow passengers - an iffy strategy

    Great tips, as always! The hot water idea is primo, never thought about this for at-seat instant oatmeal, soup, whatever. As a diabetic I usually carry at least some of my own food, and Lufthansa always had snack items and drinks laid out in the galley (although now many of these are off-limits for me!). You can use Megan's good tip to ask for just a 2nd entre to make up for parts of the first meal serving you don't want to eat (the special diabetic meal you can order is useless, skip it). Depending on how strict with carbs/sugar you are, you can always eat at least the meat and veggies from the hot entre dish(es), as well as the salad (watch sugar in dressing). Bread and desert may be out ... Airport map in the in-flight mag can be a life-saver for an unfamiliar airport and tight connection. For best sound from IFE or personal sources, I carry my Xiaomi wired dual-driver bud earphones, don't use the supplied "bud" headphones.

Got off the plane, and there was a wheelchair. I asked if it was for me and without even asking who I was told me, it was not for me, but for someone else. I waited for a bit, but no one else showed up to use the wheelchair and she simply left. No other wheelchair ever showed up. You were fortunate to find that cart. I had to walk to the gate and when I arrived at gate I had to ask for paramedics and doctor. Doctor examined me and found I was no longer medically able to travel due to stress and exhausting walk raised my blood pressure. The airline paid for my dinner and hotel and medical exam next day plus free ticket. Things advertised are not always available to handicapped. One airline provided no drinks or food on flight so bring your own.

    Most of the time I will drink ginger ale on a flight. The ginger can help settle your stomach caused by rough air or motion sickness. Once in a while, I have the Bloody Mary mix without the alcohol instead. It has more flavor than straight tomato juice and is complimentary. The wireless headphone adapter is a game changer. A small investment item that I keep in my electronics bag, and charge the night before next to my phone. That way, when I leave home I know that everything I need for the flight is fully charged and ready. I don't want to be searching for a plug at the airport when I have a long travel day ahead. I always order a special meal for international travel. Most domestic flights I can get by with just a few snacks in my personal item bag such as dried fruit, cookies, or crackers. I will still take the free snacks, but sometimes you want a little more than what may be offered.

      United's ginger ale is Seagram's, which has actual ginger it - it's listed in the ingredient list by name ("ginger extract"), so it's more than just ginger flavor. I always ask for ginger ale and specify that I would like just the can, unopened - they've never opened it prior to handing it to me when I specify it that way. I usually tuck it in my backpack, since I refuse to have an open drink on a plane because turbulence, and sometimes I pull it out later and pour it into my waterbottle to drink (again, no open drinks because turbulence), sometimes I don't (I just looked, and I have 3 cans of it in my pantry left over from last year's flights that I didn't drink - I fly carryon only, so they're all from flights home).

    A lot of these things are not true. I am a flight attendant on a US airline and I assure you, we do not have hot chocolate. We have regular coffee, instant decaf, or black tea or hot water. That is it for hot drinks. Also, since covid my airline has not had pillows and blankets on domestic flights, only international. And on an international flight, we may not have any extras. Sometimes we do, especially if there are a lot of empty seats, but sometimes we don't. I now understand why some passengers think I am lying when I say I don't have something. It is because of videos like this. I know some European carriers do have hot chocolate, and maybe Alaska does? Im not sure. Also, usually in coach we do not have a choice of wine other than red or white. It is whatever they happened to load that day. Also, on my airline, wifi is free on most of our planes though it may go out especially if going around the arctic circle on international flights. I miss having playing cards and games for kids but those have been gone on my airline for at least 10 years.😢 you are always welcome to ask for more than 1 snack. Occasionally, we are catered low and may have to ask you to wait for the extras until we serve everyone. It is a great hack to bring your own bottle and fill it up at the airport water fountains or I will be happy to fill it up for you. My airline doesn't usually have personal bottles of water. But will happily fill your own personal bottle for you. I will give some people the whole giant bottle we pour from, especially pregnant women or someone who just really wants to drink a lot of water, but we can't do that for everyone. You are always welcome to ask for a can. If so, please ask before we start pouring. We are not always catered correctly so maybe you were really looking forward to our signature cookies, but catering didnt have any and we only have 3 other snacks. Please dont yell at the flight attendant if it isnt available. We have no control over it. If you are nice about it, maybe there were a handful somewhere that were stashed from a previous flight we can give you, but if you are mean about it. I am not going to go searching. I will never forget a frequent flyer who had asked for a snack I didnt have. A little kid also asked. When I got back to the galley I was able to find a handful. I brought some to the little kid, but not the man. I had forgotten he asked. And he wanted to write me up. I gave him a ton of snacks and apologized but he wanted someone's head to roll because he didn't get his cookie earlier. I love making people's day and giving kids wings and helping to make special moments. I have facilitated marriage proposals and helped move people around so a person with cancer going to see his family for the last time could lay across a whole row. I am happy to go above and beyond for people, but please do not demand things and if things are not available they just arent. We are 30,000 feet in the air and we are not a 7-11. I will never forget the young man who asked me to make him a sandwich after we had just served the meal on a short international flight or the person who asked me to pick all the cheese out of his pre made vegetarian wrap. No. Just no. And the number of times people have boarded and demanded food immediately on short flights where we may not have anything but they are " diabetic and about to go into diabetic shock" I will offer them orange juice and tell them a medical professional will be meeting the plane shortly to take them off. It is amazing how quickly that person admits to not having diabetes but just being hungry. Don't do those things.

    Your content is excellent! Could you provide instructions on how to adapt your own iPods (ear buds) for airlines? Also, a warning, often even if there are outlets available, they are too loose to hold your block or plug. Is there a solution you know for this? Another issue is that you need A type chargers if you don’t have a block that stays in - the Cs that come with newer Apple phones don’t have receptacles at all on most flights.

    • @SnowySpiritRuby

      Charge everything the night before/make sure everything is charged when you pack it, and pack a fully charged power bank (Anker makes some really awesome ones, if you don't already have one - I suggest their 10K or 13K, as their 20K is really bulky and heavy); note that power banks aren't allowed in the cargo hold - no matter what - so pack it in your personal item. Some power banks have a C output slot as well as regular a USB output, but if you can't get one with that, USB-to-USBC cords (or, if it uses a lightning cable, lightning-to-USB - I know older Apple phones have lightning ports, and it wasn't clear whether your charging cord is C on both ends, or lightning on the phone end and C on the other) are cheap and super easy to obtain (e.g. they even sell them at my local grocery store), and it solves the problem of not being able to use regular USB charging ports that are still tight enough to hold a cable securely.
      Hope that helps.

My mom dressed me up so much that the stewardess (what they were called back then) offered me alcoholic beverages several times during the flight. I never corrected her, just didn't accept, I was embarrassed 😅😅. But, that was what struck me , how everyone had fancy clothes, hats and jewelry. I just flew on Condor Airlines and the flight from my home destination to their hub in Frankfurt (10.5 hours) had full meal and drink service. The flight from Frankfurt to my actual destination (4.5 hours) had only paid snack and drink service. The flight was technically serviced by a different local airline using Condor's planes. I did look through the menu in the seat pocket though... I just didn't feel like drinking any alcohol.

    @traveltipswithMegan have your flown Swiss Air? They have a weight limit to carry on baggage. Do they actually weigh the carry on bag before you board the plane?

    • @DawnSultWilliams
      @DawnSultWilliams 8 месяцев назад +3

      My last flight with SwissAir was so long ago that I cannot remember. However, after living abroad I will say that weight matters in much of the world outside the US.
      Americans are used to carrying on very heavy bags and this can be an issue, as I found the hard way. I don't remember which airport it was but it was definitely in Asia a couple of years ago.
      The total carryon allowance was 7 kilos. To get through security, for all of the airlines, you had to weigh everything you wanted to carry on.
      "7.1 kilos? Please step to the unpacking area, discard items, and reweigh your bag".
      7 kilos is not a lot, especially when you are used to carrying on a hardside spinner with clothing, shoes, toiletries, work and personal phones and laptops.... I ended up having to literally throw away my favorite shoes, bathing suit, and several other items. 🤦‍♀️
      If you read nothing else.... know this.... even when booking on carriers like American, the size limitations apply when you leave the US, but if your first return flight is on one of their partner airlines then that partner's baggage allowance applies.

      Most European low-cost airlines do this, either at check-in or even at the gate, if a flight is full, both for safety reasons and to earn more money. My experience of most 'proper' European airlines is that if the flight is full they'll ask at the gate or in an email/text well before the flight for any checkable carry-on bags to be checked in, first and foremost small suitcases, as they tend to be the heaviest and take up most room in the overhead lockers.

    • @SnowySpiritRuby

      Does anyone know whether these weight restrictions apply to bags holding medical equipment (e.g. medication, CPAP machine, etc.)? I ask because, under U.S. federal law, medical bags are exempt from luggage allowances on flights into, out of, and within the U.S., and wondering what the laws are that govern flights within/between other countries.

    Seat selection sucks. I paid extra on United for upgraded economy so I could select seats in advance. But when selecting them, five weeks before departure, either there were no seats without additional cost or only middle seats. I had to pay as much as $60 extra for a seat that had no extra room and was still in the back third of the aircraft. What a scam.
