whatever anyone says about this line and mike jacksons groups in general, you can't deny that they have some of the most distinct technique and music out

17:00 is so true for MJ books even back in 2017 where BK was 8th in percussion during prelims but then had a great run on finals and got 4th. Crown last year 6-8 range most the season then great finals run and got 3rd. If the book is executed well the judges WILL reward them for it but if not then…

i think their snare tuning is such high risk high reward. after hearing them in the Atlanta lot, they are so so exposed and the dirt is very apparent at the moments where there is dirt but if they can clean up those scratchies then I can see them sneakily jumping up a spot or two

I think if all books were able to be played perfectly clean and the judges could hear every note, this book would win. Mike has to find a way to dial back certain things though if he wants a Sanford. Those re attacks and crazy ass rhythms are tough. This is one of the very few books now days that i have trouble keeping up with rhythmically. 🤦🏾‍♂️😭

    I LOVE the snare tuning!
    Very very exposed though.....
Also, thanks again for breaking this down so that I can understand it! There's SO much happening at once that it's EASY to miss the inter-play between the mallets and battery!

Man, those adjustments with reattacks, hand speed changes, touch adjustments etc are hard enough standing still. Doing it on the move, and as fast as CC likes to move....gotta give these kids credit.

I LOVE this writing! The front to back is remarkably well done! If they were cleaner this might be my favorite drum book of this season but it seems to me the snares are still pretty dirty (why would anyone play ruffs?? Crazy difficult interp!), and their dry and tight tuning isn't helping them.
I haven't seen the full show yet but watching this lot video makes me look forward to hearing the full show in person! This year, for the first time, I'll be going into Finals mostly unknowing in that at this point I'm only familiar with a couple of shows for entire ensemble performances. Looking forward to it!

I agree their percussion book specifically in relation to the Brass Book is wonderfully crafted, it’s so cool that you can almost hear the brass here even though they’re not playing. Excellent composition

When I watched them in Atlanta the had a pretty clean run. Definitely cleaned up a lot since this video. They had there gray moments though. The closer feature was definitely the worst part of the show battery wise. One thing I don’t understand is why they are scoring so low in content though. Both the front and battery books are at least on par with some of the groups they are getting beat by in percussion so it’s pretty confusing why the are scoring low in that department. Also definitely don’t super understand judging but wouldnt the books being so hard to clean with all the rest racks also lend a hand in helping with content.

I took a trip to the states, to visit family on the east coast. Got to go to nightbeat for the first time since 2019.
Gotta say… the scores are just wrong.
BD wasn’t just their normal mid season dirty that I expect them to be, where they’re on their way to hyper clean, it’s that their show just didn’t have the pop I thought it would.
Crowns show really outperformed on an audio level as crown does, on a visual level I feel the capes made nothing stand out for bd, the costume change didn’t feel as effective as it should, the show concept didn’t feel as cohesive as it should. Whereas Crown had story, cleaner playing, more clear visual elements, a much more effective and quicker changeover for the opening hornline shawls they wore. Drumline were literally more readable from the 20 than BD was, and that to me is an anomaly because each time I’ve heard BD in person, much like BAC it doesn’t matter where in the stadium you are their drumline reads properly.
Bluecoats felt miles above BD in GE as their corps really strives for, performance wise it didn’t read as well from the side, I’m sure all these groups were clean from the front but the judge isn’t always standing centred on the pit on the 50 (although it’s not like they move a lot)
Overall couldn’t agree less with BDs point and a half lead on crown rn.

But.... Music! The content side should really be taken with some deeper analysis..imo 😉

    • @agedoutpodcast
      @agedoutpodcast  Месяц назад +3

I don’t necessarily disagree. But I do think if we start leaning more and more into content, then what we are really doing is crediting the design and not the performers achievement. Also it makes it more subjective than it already is, in my opinion. You could get a judge that “just doesn’t like that content” or that arrangement. Clarity keeps it a little more black and white. Although it’s not perfect. -Evan

@@agedoutpodcast It still has to be "excellent" to receive any credit. I think once you are in the 95-98% clarity zone, (nobody is perfect) then, it's someone's job to dig in and see what the what is, and reward the performance of/and the score...or not. I think that leads to more creativity, not less.. again, imo. Love the podcast, thanks for doing this!
