Brave man. Either that or you're highly skilled. I'm guessing both actually 😉 I first heard this back in about 2000 when the Jazz FM radio station (here in the UK) still had an evening program called 'Dinner Jazz' that used to air on weekday evenings, from about 7-10pm. They played a lot of gorgeous ballads and other not so up-tempo tunes during those sessions; mainly intimate small groups, duo, trio, quartet. At the time, I was still recording stuff off the radio using cassettes and happened to be recording one evening when this came over the radio. As the tune progressed I got more and more excited; the pianist was giving me so many surprises, putting out unbelievable ideas at every angle (to my ears anyway). I hadn't heard anything like that up until then; to me his playing was out of this world .... absolutely stunning. That was my chance introduction to Brad Mehldau; just thrown into the deep end like that. I was transcribing quite a bit back then, but, I didn't dare try Brad because, even if I could find out the underlying harmony of the song, I didn't think I could even make sense of his choices against that harmony. So glad for that happy accident. I can only imagine how much work went into this transcription. My hat off to you!
That's a nice introduction to Brad's stuff! I've always felt like this track is a perfect starting point. I've been transcribing Brad for a long, long time now. This is actually a really old transcription of mine that I just reuploaded with better video quality. I have several Brad transcriptions published with Modern Works Publishing and contributed some transcriptions to his new Suite: April 2020 book. It's definitely a lot of work, but I enjoy doing it. There's so much to learn!
I actually already did that one but I had to take it down because it was from an unauthorized recording. Maybe I'll redo it if he records it officially!

Art of the Trio IV is my favourite Brad Mehldau album. Not a single bad track. Every solo is memorable.

Hi Michael any chance you are doing a transcription of baby’s in black?
I actually already did that one but I had to take it down because it was from an unauthorized recording. Maybe I'll redo it if he records it officially!
I LOVE the way Brad bends the time and harmony. Great music making by all.
