Hey yo, quick tip to anyone who doesn't vlog or point a camera at their own face from a couple centimeters away.. A 24-70 f/2.8 is pretty much the only lens you will need if filming with a full frame camera, I'd recommend the sigma unless you've got very deep pockets. Also love your new secretary Matti, he knows his codecs well. 👌
so true. if i'd shoot a documentary with a director/producer the 24-70 or even 24-105 would be my first choice. maybe a prime for b-roll after that if we have time. Been there done that, if your job is to get the shot... .
Absolutely agree, for actual narrative filmmaking such as features, short film etc… it’s pretty much all you need. Majority of cinema use these focal lengths and very much so at f2.8.
A 24-70 is a very versatile lens, it's great if you're just starting out in filmmaking and you're wondering which lens should you buy first, also a good 24-70 lens will last you a lifetime. On the other hand, your comment is valid, it may lack character however you can also upgrade your gear in the future and opt for a good prime lens set. Tip: Own the basics and rent the rest if you're doing this as a career 😉
I've only used a Sigma 18-35 for my GH5 at f/2.8 for YEARS, so I figured if I change to a7s III that something like this would give me basically the same range. I'm ok with "average" 😅
The tightening of the zoom ring is probably so that it won't change focal lengths if it gets bumped or for an overhead shot so that the weight of the lens doesn't change the focal length (that has happened to me on a sigma 24-70mm f/2.8 because it was really loose). Loosening focal ring it will help with smoother zooms.
I use the sigma 24-70 2.8 ART and it’s one of the best lenses I’ve ever owned. It’s so versatile and I use it on most if not every shoot unless I’m using my underwater housing, or doing architecture photography in which I use my 20mm 1.8. Carrying 4 lenses to achieve the relatively same focusing range (24mm 35mm 50mm and 85mm), just isn’t realistic for a lot of people who aren’t in a studio. This lens looks great but with already owning the sigma, this doesn’t offer enough difference
I think it’s completely depending on what line of work your in. I mean, for example for run & gun work, i think this is the absolute best if you don’t know what to expect and want a variety of shots. But yeah, not the best at anything, i can agree on that, but maybe the best allrounder.
Even though many probably would say you’re ranting, I appreciate the knowledge I glean from your videos concerning focal lengths, focus shifting, etc. Keep up the good work Matti. We’re learning a lot.
I function solely off 24 and 85mm, the 85 can grab close and medium shots while the 24 can grab any wide documentation shot I want. You don’t NEED anything just do what works for you; I wanted faster apertures so I went primes
I have to say, I had a 16-35 for a while, but when you're actually going light, it just isn't enough range for pulling an interesting variety of shots together for a mini-sequence, especially on FF! Switched out to a 24-70 2.8ii (Canon) a few years ago and never looked back. Truly cannot love any 24-105 or similar though, that F4 just really takes the edge off everything and it's just a bit dull! Joined the Fx6 gang a month ago now though, so looking at the painful reality of selling all my canon glass as that sony AF is just W I L D.
I love your take. I'm curious how you travel with a wide zoom, a 24, a 35, and an 85. I'm usually shooting docs on my own for weeks at a time that's far from home, and I try to lighten my load as much as I can, so I stick to a 24-70 2.8 and a 70-200 4.0. Do you have people helping you lug stuff?
Interesting to hear why you haven’t purchased a 24-70. What’s interesting is your reasons not to buy are the reasons that is my number one go-to lens. I don’t like to carry three lenses (35mm, 50mm, & 85mm) when I can have one that covers roughly the same range. When was the last time I needed more than f/2.8? Can’t remember. In fact, f/2.8 is more than most of m6 shots. Sure, you get amazing bokeh with an f/1.2 but that is just over two stops better. It also makes the focus plane about five mm thick, so eye in focus but nose out. Love my RF 24-70. It’s always on my camera, every day, walk around lens.
depth of field is relative to the distance from subject, so a 50 f1.2 wide open actually have decent depth of field and subject separation for mid length to full body shots
If you're on a gimbal and on a fast-paced job, where it just takes too long to be switching lenses constantly and rebalancing, the 24-70 is really the best option out there.
It's funny that I was trying to figure out for months what kind of lenses do I need after a brand change.. and I came to the same conclusion! And now I am having the "perfect" set and loving it for a month now.. this video just popped up today and confirms I've made a good decision for my purposes ;-)
doesn't Danny Gevirtz used a 24-70 for most of his films? i thought i heard that in the bts for his bicycle video. I tend to use the 24-70 a lot for car photography
Years ago, I bought a 35-70mm f/2.8 D Nikkor auto focus zoom lens. Later, I upgraded to 28-70mm f/2.8 D Nikkor auto focus zoom lens. When Nikon replaced the 28-70 D with the 24-70mm f/2.8 G auto focus zoom lens, I did not buy it because it was a “G” lens that did not have an aperture ring. Some of my camera bodies need the aperture ring for exposure control.
It's funny to hear you say that you find the 24-70mm f/2.8 to be too average. I didn't buy one for the same reason. I purchased ultra-wide and telephoto zooms & primes in 35mm f/1.2 & anamorphic 50mm t/2.9 instead. But, for "run&gun" video I usually use a 24-105mm f/4 macro stabilised lens, as it covers a larger zoom range. (Panasonic S1H.)
I've been trying to get ahold of the Tamron 35 - 150 2.0. The versatility and the price make it really appealing. And for traveling, having two or three multiple purpose lenses means the most to me. I love my primes, but too much space for most traveling.
I’m with you on this one. I’ve owned one 24-70 in my life and it pretty much stayed in the bag all the time. I recently switched to Sony after shooting canon for 20 years and I find if I need a Swiss Army of a lens; the 24-105 G has a better place for wide and tight; run and gun shots.
I have the Sony 24-105 G and I just purchased the Sony 24-70 today. I will have to check it out for myself when it comes in the mail in a couple days. I am a film student currently in school.
I have to disagree. Unless you are holding the camera and pointing it at yourself all the time, a 24-70 is a much better story telling lens than a wide zoom. I would much rather have a wide, fast prime such as a 20mm f1.8, 24-70 f2.8, and a 70-200 f2.8. Work horse focal ranges are convenient while the specialty ones (wide or telephoto) are present and at fast apertures when needed. Obvious use cases vary but that kind of kit is extremely flexible.
THANK YOU. I have been debating on buying an 85mm 1.2 as my first expensive lens. I also want a 35 prime. I just dont like the idea of a 24-70, seems boring.
Totally agree with you. Like most people would say, this is just a one shot lens where you don’t have to change lens much. I use primes mainly so it’s either super wide or 70-200 would be my zoom I have. Btw, I purchased your NMO boxy t and crew neck long sleeve!
24-70 is my most important lens it’s for run and gun situation most versatile and the very decent low light great for events and parties scenario I wouldn’t trade it up for anything else my work horse bread and butter lens

@@mattih yes sir they do, I personally love Daniel Schiffer video's look and he often uses few Batis prime lenses. What would I do to put my hands on one of them!
My 24-70 Sigma Art lens is coming next week. In the video, you mention 24-70 lenses don't do anything perfectly but a lot of things just ok. The quote "a jack of all trades is a master of none, but oftentimes better than a master of one" comes to mind. For someone who doesn't need ultra wide or telephoto, 24-70 is the sweet spot and all I need (for now).
Seriously, I am impressed that you could jump up on the couch like that in skinny jeans and run away. But I do find the 24 to 70 to be a good all around lens especially when shooting on location.
The place of a 24-70 isn't for being the best at anything. It's for being a crisp, fairly quick lens for working quick in dynamic stations. Shooting weddings with RF Canon, mine gets used all the time with the RF 70-200. I sub them out for 35/85 in portrait and super low light situations, and use the tiny 16mm 2.8 when I really need to go super wide or do vlog stuff. Even then I find myself often stopping down my primes to 2.8 or 4 so both people are the point of focus on couples portraits.

I know a 25-70mm lens with constant aperture of 1.2 It can actually be extended to 135mm (and even 189mm with a trick) Sigma 18-35 + Speedboster on a Lumix 😁 It is a 25-50mm which can be optionally cropped to 35-70mm 1.2 with the pixel/pixel readout in 4k and 67-135mm 1.2 in HD (but the noise gets too noticeable in HD) Great lens, unfortunately no autofocus is possible

It can actually be extended to 135mm (and even 189mm with a trick)
Sigma 18-35 + Speedboster on a Lumix 😁 It is a 25-50mm which can be optionally cropped to 35-70mm 1.2 with the pixel/pixel readout in 4k and 67-135mm 1.2 in HD (but the noise gets too noticeable in HD)
Great lens, unfortunately no autofocus is possible
I always come here to say first, and I never win the game.
Good effort tho 😂
Cmon matti it’s a very good versatile lens
