Depression really took over all of last year and I barely touched my sketchbook. I already had a hard time sketching the last few years due to being discouraged after seeing other artist's pretty sketchbooks. Struggling with late diagnosed ADHD and Autism also held my attention for months. This year, now that depression is under control and my ADHD is somewhat manageable, I am once again creating art like I used to. I'm hoping to fill up a sketchbook!
Luckily my depression makes it so almost all I do is draw. Don't know if that's healthy but it also helps my ADHD at school so I don't draw on my work. Wish you a good 2023.
Vent art can be quite cathartic. For me i have a little tiny strathmore sketchbook that i glue a bunch of stuff into, anything. I use paper mache, markers, watercolor, post it drawings, drawings from other paper, literally anything
My art goals??? Hmmm they're mostly abstract like your first two goals are but here goes: 1- develop a certain portrait/illustration look that i want as my own staple/ signature kinda style (because for now, i've just been doing alot of experimentation without settling to just one thing) 2- keep growing my ig account so that hopefully at one point in the future i can open commissions locally. 3- paint on the empty canvases i have. Finish my current sketchbook ect.. 4- last but not least! To actually have fun with it like you explained. To do art as a wind-down activity. An opportunity to distress and just sketch away, doing croquis sessions with online friends.. give myself the permission to mess around with the tools and be creative.
(Thanks for giving me the opportunity and space to actually force myself and think about it seriously for a minute. Glad i did this because i've been avoiding the task/accountability of it all. Might need to write this down somewhere now)
I just started a new sketchbook in december and my goal is,to just be creative and use my art supplies!! I'm very critical of my art,so It's a long way to just paint/draw freely
I enjoyed watching that video a lot! My balance is to also draw and paint in my sketchbook, when the cam is off... only be creative for myself. And of course to know: my sketchbook is my safe place, I can experiment, and the pages can be ugly I don't care... next page. Fun is the key.. ❤️✨ Xoonani
Loved hearing about your process in such detail! Your spreads are so much fun to look at. For my goals, I am going to try to post consistently to RUclips (for a while, not necessarily for the whole year). I just started filming myself creating in my sketchbook a few months ago, and I am having so much fun editing videos. I also am going to try digital art for the first time thanks to a Christmas present I got. Happy new year!
Related but different, I've been having fun making rough sketches with coloured pencil and then doing tight line art atop it. It gives a strange look which I personally like, and it lets me practice both sketching and lining in one. I never stick to one way of doing things very long, and have thoroughly enjoyed doing something similar to this too.
Cool insights! I want to sketch more than usual coz now in my studies, we're leaning towards digital arts but traditional art has a special place in my heart. Also, I feel a lot more practiced on gesture drawings in trad because I'm not tempted to draw directly on the reference. Putting a background on the subjects are really interesting for composition, thanks for this tip! 😍💓
I love your sketches! I've taken to using water based markers to fill in the background of my sketches like you do and it really makes them pop! I have a few goals for this year: Practice/ learn animation Get comfortable/better at stylization and character design And lastly I want to stop putting off doing backgrounds!!
Oh these are beautiful!! I need to draw more than just my own characters, all mostly people. Like environments & animals…..I also need to make my sketchbooks prettier, instead of plain pencil sketches! I guess I do have New Year’s resolutions after all lol..art ones
AWESOME FEEL GOOD ART AS ALWAYS. CAN'T WAIT FOR MORE PRODUCTS AND BOOKS (PLUS HOPEFULLY A BACKPACK ANIMAL SERIES OR SOMETHING). GREAT FOR KIDS (AND FOREVER KIDS AT HEART) ART IN AN ERA WHERE WE DON'T REALLY HAVE OUR OWN BEATRIX POTTER. WELL HERE'S OURS. GREAT STUFF JEL🤙👍🐸
The third dog you did, the one in the right upper corner was fantastic 😍 Btw, I will try today to leave to the side the reference once I get the general shape. I tend to stiffen up and also get frustrated when I inevitably see something even slightly not the way it looks in the reference. Thanks for the tip 👍
If you're trying to find a bunch of pictures of dogs with the long noses the technical term is dolichocephalic. They're my favorite, I love their derpy, concerned faces
thank u sm for this video! not only is it a genuinely satisfying process to watch, but i feel like this video finally got the idea through to me to not focus too much on the details, keep it fun and loose and not chained to the reference
To be fair, in the past I have gone several years between drawing sessions and usually have an either hot or cold relationship with creating art. Though, when I am 'on' I am pretty productive. Over the years I have created 2 and a half animated shorts and I am currently working on eyecatch animations between a fan manga/comic that I started over the new years.
One goal that I have this year is to make and use 25 sketchbooks of varying sizes and shapes. I finished the first one and already started the second one :3
I'm kinda in a artblock but i want to go back to my sketchbook, and my digital art... i decided to take a break in january but next month I need to draw again somehow!
My art resolution this year is to learn human anatomy. I've never learned how to draw humans in any way, and the the only thing I draw is animals and nature-y things, so it might be pretty hard haha
Dear JelArts, this is amazing! I have recently started trying to draw dogs, but I am finding it very difficult. Do you follow a certain anatomical pattern or base? If so, is there a book that teaches it? I have looked at so many books for drawing dogs, but can't seem to find something that works for me...any suggestions would be very much appreciated.
I really like animals but every time I draw them they look a little strange do you have any tips it would help ☺️I usually only draw dogs but I would like to draw other animals too
I have a question. You use colored pencil in your sketchbook a lot. I love using colored pencil with watercolor. However, when I do it in my sketchbook it always rubs off on the opposite page. What do you do to prevent this? I've seen people water over graphite, but COLORED pencil is a different animal isn't it?
Hmm this is tricky! You can try watercolour, or get a spray fixative and spray it over your page when you're done. I have a can of matte fixative that I use every once in a while. You can also use hairspray! Make sure it's the kind that stiffens hair. Not sure if it will yellow over time but I used hairspray in some sketchbooks a few years back and no yellowing yet.
I truly believe that anyone can draw well, it just takes a lot of practice and a few years! If you look back at my oldest videos there's a huge difference in skill level, and that was 10 years ago. All because of practice!
happy new year! loved to listen to your goals i literally started drawing in my sketchbook, i mean not only your art inspires me but your own insight of your art made me want to create! thank you for that and hopefully we all get to comply our goals for this year
the moment I saw the doggo reel I knew it would blow up, congrats, it's so wholesome and cute 😂💕✨
Hahaha thanks so much

@@JelArts It's a Gaoman Pen Display. It haven't even fired it up yet. Pretty intimidated! But it should be fun once I get going 😃
I'm really happy that our arts goals are so similar because that means future videos are gonna help me ( sorry for the English)

Sort of unrelated, but at 0:20 I love how the text color matches the color of the pencil you're using
Thanks, my editing brain appreciates the compliment a lot :D

BORZOI!!!!!!

What kind of watercolor do you use? Amazing art by the way, keep it up!
Edit: thank you for the great help!
I like shinhan professional watercolour!
@@JelArts Thank you so much! :D
(づ ᴗ _ᴗ)づ♡ Tyy for the great help! I felt like something was missing from my sketchbook-
I’m not sure if I’m correct or not, but I think the dog breed you drew was a Borzoi.
Yep they are borzois!
