  • The Chicago Teachers Union and their affiliate activist groups have poured millions into CTU lobbyist and Cook County Commissioner Brandon Johnson's 2023 mayoral campaign. Having gone on record praising the "defund the police" movement and belittling former U.S. President Barack Obama's criticism of it, Johnson's radical stances on both are the exact opposite of where the vast majority of Chicago voters' beliefs.

The stated goal is to redirect funds allocated to the police to alternative responders for issues such as mental health where the police are ill-equipped to address properly.
Ideally, this will result in better overall outcomes for society, since just locking up people can easily result in a long term downward spiral for the individuals affected.

Right. We've seen how that experiment has played out in Seattle, Portland, Minneapolis, Philadelphia, and NYC. No need to repeat the failed policies of our friends elsewhere.

So, you knew the point of the message and still posted this as opposed to addressing the idea and what you found to be an issue?
I haven't seen the experiments that you are claiming and thus don't know that they are failures. Worse. This issue gets muddier due to most enactments are not purely the intent of the author given the political give and takes which can actually cripple a program. This is something that I have seen in variety of different program implementations.
      So, here's my understanding...
We have social issues that have crippled the capacities of many wherein police action will only make worse. Thus, I find it better to address the issues that are crippling people whether it is education, mindset, and/or basic needs, since it seems to cost more to lock up people than it costs to address their issues before they become a societal problem needing judicial redress.

Sure, and when the raging mobs of mindless groids in Chicago start murdering people openly, I'm sure the 'alternative responders' will just calm things right down...
