Most in-depth review of the highway 61 IMO thus far.
Thank you so much, great info on that good chunky neck and overtones.

Thank you for making this video. I’ve been wanting this guitar for a while but I didn’t realize how large the neck was. I have small hands so I feel like i would have a lot of trouble trying to play this guitar. Being able to damp the sound with that bridge over the biscuit would also be a problem for me.
Like you stated, it also sounds more like an acoustic guitar and doesn’t quite have the bark of a typical resonator. All of this really helped me out a ton on making my decision. I think I’ll take a look at a few other Republic resonators or even save up for a national. Thank you again for the video!

Jordan Zemanek I think you’ll find that problem with the bridge and right-hand damping with any resonator.

These are great guitars. But they are made in China. setup in Austin by Republic. I've read that they are made in the same factory as Aria.

Thanks for the demo and info. This is a 14 fret, which from what I understand is rare for a resonator, have you any experience with a 12 fret? Any noticeable difference?

I had one of these and the metal bodies are excellent but I couldn't stand it because of the neck. I do not understand why the guys who put these things together would not insist on reducing the size of the neck and also, get rid of that white binding stripe along the length of the neck.

The Republic society is in Austin. But the instruments are made in China. I bought one classic tricorne around ten years ago. They told me that the biscuit was made in Germany. I dont know now.

If you compare the specs on the neck you will find it is not that large compared to tther guitars. I have small hands but thick.. I need a wide neck and not thick.. This resonator plays great.. I think your neck comments regarding the neck do a disservice to it. This is a. compact guitar for sure.. but with a standard neck regarding dimensions. . That sweetness you describe regarding the sound.. How did you not find that when you first played it. Yes as you get lower on the action it reveals itself even more but one of the things that is unique about this resonator.. is that sound.. ?>?????

      Thanks for watching!!
Re neck size, mine has a U-shape neck profile and it is wide, at least compared to any other steel string guitars I own, acoustic or electric. It is slightly thicker and much, much wider than the neck on my Larrivee dreadnought, for example, and the U shape gives it a very chunky feel; you don't often encounter U-shaped necks on modern acoustic guitars (most that I encounter these days are C or V). I can't reconcile my observations with yours; perhaps Republic resonator necks come in different widths?
As I said in the review, it's not really a criticism, just an observation. Someone used to normal-size C or V profile necks might have some trouble getting used to this one; I know for me it takes a bit to get used to it each time I pick it up.
The sweetness I was describing is different from the full-throat sound of the instrument. I found that an extremely light touch brings out something different on this guitar; a whole different timbre.
Again, thanks for watching and for the comment!

MY GUITAR IS THE SAME SIZE AS THIS BUT THE SOUND OF MINE IS RICH MEATY AND SUSTAINS LIKE CRAZY.....VERY SMOOTH AND ARTICULATE,I WANT MINE TO SOUND LIKE A RESONATOR...HAHA....MINE HAS A FAT NECK LIKE MY 50'S LES PAUL...IT ADDS TO THE TONE AND I USE SMALL STRINGS 13-56

@@robq they are small bodied so the sound is "Tinny". give or take.. can lignten it up with a ceramic slide.. I find mine plays better through the amp. as to the neck.. I think ( and I did not go and mesure) but I think the nut is over 1.5'' .. so that is about as wide as the standard neck gets..im sure there are exceptions.. but that is what I look for because of the size of my hands.. I dont think they have different necks.. especially the neck on the steel or brass bodies.. Hwy 61. How is it playing now??????? I have gone through several res.. Gretsch, epiphone, Regal.. and have found this to be good for me regarding a steel body.. and size.. NOW if you want resonance, and tone.. I have a Regal with 3 cones.. and a brass body.. you know that riff in "Little red rooster" where you slide to the 12 fret.. How about slide to the 12 frett……. go out for a smoke…. and when you get back its still going.. ( ok well sort of.. LOL ) .. weighs a ton though.. I have to play it classical style agains the opposite leg or it will get away on me . The important thing is.. enjoy it.. If you dont like the sound trade it in and get another.. one day you will find your sound.. and the two of you will live happily ever after. (. I have two today.. and still looking LOL ). and then of course there are the other kids.. LOL. One can never have to many guitars. My Regal…. www.long-mcquade.com/43518/Guitars/Resonator-Guitars/Saga-Music/Brass-Metal-Body-Resophonic-Guitar.htm

why would you make a resonator more a acoustic guitar its not . its a resonator and it resonates like it does because its made of brass not wood. it is a really good guitar for slide and in no way is it a Martin

    • @robq
      @robq  6 лет назад

I don't know how you got the idea that I was suggesting it should be anything like a Martin; the only mention of Martin guitars in the whole video was when I mentioned that the Republic has a large neck; much larger than any Martin acoustic. Not a criticism; just an observation.
