Here's another instance of something that I've passed by countless times and never given it a second thought, but for some reason I decided to look a little harder and realized that something was hiding in plain sight. This concrete wall along a busy roadway doesn't appear to be much, but when looking at it on the old maps, I discovered that it was an actual rail line. Where did it go? How much of the line is left? The Dupont Station for the Laurel Line was on top of the wall. It went down Laurel Street. Crossed Williams street. There is a right of way barricade on Williams street. Several homes have Gardensplanted between the tracks that are still there.

Cool find. It looks wide enough for two lines I would think. I saw other comments saying it was a passenger line. I wonder if there was a small traction company park that ran along the side where you found the terraces. The different shapes and sizes could have been for different rides and concessions. Thanks for taking us along.
JP, you are one of the few explorers that actually try to find real facts about the places you find. As always, you found some really interesting items. Never a dull video. Loved it.
The real facts are very interesting so I'm always interested in learning what I can.
I live a right by there. I will recommend maybe looking into the bridge just down the road (that leads into Avoca) it crosses a train track. Idk for certain but was told that crossing is a big deal in the past as it had several bridges in one area. Maybe something worth looking into? I know quite a few of the areas local to this that you have visited and may have a few others to recommend for you to check out. Thanks for exploring and showing off some of the remains of the history of our area! Love the content.

The "basin" near the 31 minute mark is a sediment basin probably used for the development. The wooden wall is a baffle used to increase the length to width ratio of the basin, this should have been removed when construction concluded. The debris cage and metal piping is the sediment basin riser which is supposed to be removed once construction is complete. The concrete structure that the riser structure was connected to is the permanent detention basin control structure. The water goes out of the basin through the pipe that goes into the ground on the opposite side of the riser structure. I design these for a living.

JP, this is what i often did in central NY as the remnants of 3 Erie Canals and many old RR sites fill the section along NY Rt31 between Clyde and Elbridge NY. The oldest canals were higher up and had a nifty water feeder and drainage design. These work so well they still fill and spill. Similar to my explorations, you keep running into old feeder ponds (natural and man-made). Some are fed by long, gently curving “raceways” from local streams. Day trip on that section of NY RT31 highly recommended.
at 24:10, there is a structure to your left in the old black and white map (away from the homes) with a path connecting. Any chance you are going back.., haha. Great vid, you are the best.

JP I thought the drainage pipes were interesting to see, but they were blocked. There must have been high water coming through there, but they are not functional. Very interesting finds 👍👍👍👍

I know of several other bridge abutments you might want to check out. One is up the hill from the Geisinger offices up the hill from Sheetz in Scranton. It's right along the active rail line. The other is near the river in the hillside near the newer car wash along Main Avenue in Old Forge.

I wish JP worked in Western PA. I moved away decades ago, but it would be fun to see some of the old out-of-the-way places there.
17:30 they probably didn't remove the ties. In NY they're toxic waste, but in PA you can use them however you wish, and somebody probably "borrowed" them for retaining walls or posts or whatever.

Isn't it funny how the greatest and most interesting finds are hidden right under our noses. Really awesome find. As we followed you down the old rail line, you could almost hear the old train whistle blowing. I'll bet it was really cool back in its time. Take care and God bless.

A plethora of intriguing finds in this video! Who would have thought... It looked so inconspicuous from the road side. It's almost like an outdoor mystery museum; first you have to find the things and then you have to guess what it is and how it all connects. -Great explore, JP!

Another very interesting video. So glad to find out thanks to Chuck who left a comment that it was part of the old Laurel Line. Was always curious were it went. I know you uncovered ruins farther up some time age. Hard to believe the ruins you just found are 70 yrs old. I know the Laurel Line ceased operations in 1952. I love railroad history thanks for exploring it so much.

Great video. Yes, the Laurel Line ran north crossing over the very long bride you pointed out and ran behind Avoca, crossed under Vine Street and over Plane Street where the Avoca terminal was.
I followed much of it by Rocky Glen, but it was great to see another section of it.
Wandering in the woods in Northern Ohio, we would run across old structures, pipes and ties. At the time and being a kid, the rail history of the state wasn't something on my radar. It was just adventure for us. Now thanks to many channels, I'm very certain that we ran across just one of dozens of defunct rail companies and their lines from a century past. Amazing how rail lines criss-crossed just about everywhere, servicing small towns and businesses on narrow-gauge, until they were ultimately merged with or bought up by the larger companies.
You can clearly see the double track in the old photos. You will note a thin light colored area delineating the two dark colored lines (tracks). Further, if you look at the site of the bridge you started in the beginning of the video, you can also see that there are two individual bridge structures with different starting points.
Once you gained initial access up on the railbed at the start, the cut in the rocks on the backside of the rail line appears to be a man made cut sloping upwards tot he rail bed whcih may have been work access for maintenance or for the original construction.
4:50 they aren't "kinda like railroad ties". They ARE railroad ties. See the spike holes and tie plate impression?
JP I live in Old Forge and only explored the west mountain that are near me I have driven by that area many time in my life but never knew what was there. 😮Thanks for showing that area.

23:17 probably the opposite. The railroad pulled the rails from the line on the left while still operating the line on the right. Those ties rotted and became worthless. When they pulled the rails on the right, those ties were still in good condition and somebody reused them. I saw this same thing on the NYO&W line going up from the north to Highview Tunnel.

It looks like a 2 rail line site. Back in the day I wouldn't jump the gap on a dirt bike. That's scary.... What a crazy area of dangers. I although enjoyed this trip. Thanks! For sharing this trip. I'll skip the chocolate candy. 😂

What about a hillside station for the railroad? I’ve seen such station sites on Jawtooth’s videos before.
I do not know this area at all. But you said there was a coal breaker there. That usually means 1 or more coal mines may be close by. Finding a crack with air coming out could be a vent for a coal mine. Just a thought.

this is the old lural line dupont station just north up the line right before where the old bridge would be there would be a second station strickly for the miners

There is something similar not far from where I live and wondered why it was there. It turned out to be an abandoned railroad line and there was a railroad trestle at that location where the road would have gone underneath the trestle.
Best book on this line is Edward S. Miller's book on the L&WV. Should be in most local libraries...he lived in Pittston and was the expert on traction lines in the area.

The county seat records rooms for the county you're exploring may very well have pictures, etc. of the old industries. An old picture may help you put things into the proper perspective, as to what was what and where. Nice footage.

The pond and walls were probably from the road construction as a temporary sediment basin for all the earthwork moving.
The cage is called a trash rack in the stormwater design world.
The disconnected pipe and box appears to be way to spread out the stormwater runoff. Instead of a concentrated discharge point that would create erosion.

JP- my thinking is that those curved steps near the end of the video were stairs. I'm guessing there was a station at the top and people needed to climb those wide steps to get up there. The ramps were there to make it easier to push baggage from street level to the top. I'm going to have to do some more research as the Laurel line is an interurban that I'm not too familiar with.

Looking at the pipes at 47:42 I wonder if those are also mine vents. I was looking at the retaining wall with the gaps in it, they sure looked to thin to hold back much water.
Perhaps if you can find more aerial photographs of this area from different time periods, maybe that might shed some light on what all this was.

Maybe that wood wall was originally inteneded to be part of a form for pouring concrete, but for whatever reason the project stopped and what had been assembled was just left to rot

@@cruikshank this was filmed on the DJI Osmo Action 3 which has built in stabilization called Rocksteady. It's like using a gimbal without needing one.
