  • Today we'll be testing and replacing P0720 REVOLUTION SENSOR. Also known as - Vehicle Speed Sensor A/T. Don't get this confused with P0500 Vehicle Speed Sensor. P0500 deals with speedometer reading on your dashboard. P0720 deals with Automatic Transmission Control Unit / Computer.
    The revolution sensor detects the revolution of the idler gear and emits a pulse signal. This signal is sent to the A/T control unit (computer) which converts it into vehicle speed.

    P0720 - A/T control unit does not receive the proper voltage signal from the sensor.

    Great video as always, just saved me from replacing the speed sensor. However I wish it wasn't the revolution sensor that was bad, quite a price difference. Thanks for the video.

    Glad I found this video. My buddy Honda Prelude 96 is throwing a P0715 code Input/Turbine Speed Sensor Circuit Malfunction. I read on a a forum if odomter or speedometer does not work, it is due to VSS, but I did not see that problem when driving the car. The symptoms are kick/jump/jerk (whatever u wanna call it) after each shift or RPM (automatic). At first, I thought tranny is slipping, but wasn't sure. I just ordered the "Revolution sensor" from APW and hope that fixes the problem, if not, they do take returns unlike Advanceauto.

    Thanks For the Clarification of the 720 & 500 codes!! Got both the P0500 & P0720, but found that when I unplug the input & output sensors, which are the Revolution sensors on a 2015 CVT Tranny (2015 Nissan Versa Note), I got other codes for the disconnect. But when I unplug the Actual Speed Sensor, does not pop any additional Codes. Now need to find this Speed Sensor, not Revolution Sensor :)

    I have to say I have been searching for months to help find info on speed sensors and revolution sensors and you my friend have been the best and most informative I have found. You explain everything in very simple terms which is perfect.
    I do have a question if the revolution sensor is no good what does the vehicle actually do to give you the idea it might be that? I;m not talking the code I'm actually wondering what it feels like, does it jerk then catch up, just plain die or what?
    Thanks again for the help. Wish the parts for these were as cheap here in Texas as where you are.

    Love your video. Only, where are you shopping ? In 1:20 you say the speed sensor is $125. I bought that very sensor at the auto store for only $10.
    Would this location and procedure be the same thing on Ford Explorer 1998 ?
    Oh my God, you're saying, remove the driver's side front tire, and there it is ? Oh the other videos I've watched from other guys didn't say this.
    Wow, love your video, you are explaining this far better than other video's I've seen from other people. Thank you..

    • @CarsNToys

      Glad to help. The location will differ based on the vehicle; this was a '97 Maxima. If you're uncertain where the sensor is, try Google images or forums. Sometimes you can find the factory repair manual online which will show all sensors and locations.

    my 03 sentra is throwing out a po720. shifts from 2nd to 3rd is sloppy. (shoots up 1000rpms before shifting) and everyday, when accelerating from a red light, the transmission will stay in first gear... so i pull over and cycle the engine on and off, and presto, it works again... anyways, my revolution sensor/output speed sensor has 3 wires. red, black, and white. would i test across red and white or what. i tried all the combinations, pretty sure the one i have is dead. multimeter is measuring "1" everywhere

    • @CarsNToys
      @CarsNToys  8 лет назад

      +james blevins I agree. It's one of those things that people often mix up. I haven't run across a vehicle that inhibits vehicle speed but I wouldn't be surprised. Vehicles today are more electronic than mechanical. Any other trouble codes?

    • @jiggajames78
      @jiggajames78 8 лет назад

      +CarsNToys just a knock sensor code. I think p0325. but I already replaced it. but it will drive for about ten minutes and then it deaccelerates from 65- to 45- 50 mph,but doesn't shut off the engine. but when you try to push on the gas while it deaccelerates it chugs and and I hear it slam the tranny while trying to push on the gas. but the slower the car goes and I ease on the accelerater it chugs fast unless I floor it. to describe the chug is like a rev limiter. but if in park it does the same thing minus being in gear. also once warmed up is hard to start. but if I start it up while its cold and warms its self up for more than a hour it won't do it unless I put it in gear even if I run it for and hour. my cluster isn't working either. but the only think of about the knock sensor is because the ecu isn't able to read the vss so it doesn't know when to fire retarting it. I have one video of it but you half to wear headphones to hear it.

    • @CarsNToys
      @CarsNToys  7 лет назад

      I'm afraid that code is due to a mechanical (rather than electrical) malfunction. A tranny shop can repair the specific problem (such as control valve sticking) but it's often cheaper to get another tranny. If it was my vehicle, I'd probably go with a used tranny that has a warranty. Or, it may be about the same price just donating the Maxima and purchasing another one. The 4th gen maxima's are pretty darn cheap. Good luck.
