LET'S COOK A JUNK JOURNAL! Seems like it's GROUNDHOG DAY today.... [ROUND 1/2]

  • Do you remember my last video? Yes? That's wonderful! Do you also remember the movie 'Groundhog Day' with Bill Murray? Yes? Well, then, this video doesn't need any further explanation, lol.
    You can learn from your mistakes, they say. If something turned out as a fail, you'll probably not do it again. Not so for a junk journaler, right? So let's retry yesterday's experiment with some slight variations, and definitely without having another date with another man, lol.

    In art school they warned us that one of the dangers of painting is being too precious about painting on canvas. This is exactly the kind of experimental abandon for which my teachers would give a standing ovation. I was not sure why you weren't happy with the first cooking, but maybe you require a twice-cooked journal and you want to test the absolute limits of this process. I was wondering why you did not bake the journal the second time, which would dry it out and possibly fix the dyes rather than dilute them. Maybe that's another groundhog-day video? I think it was wise of you to wrap it with a new fabric, so that there is no risk that the old stained towel contaminates the newer applications of spray stain and mica stain. I'm really curious to know what happens with the mica stains. Hats off to you Luise!

    Comment two: a couple of years ago during a heat wave, I tried coffee and tea dying papers, left them outside to dry layered with doilies and plastic lace placemats. As in this video (about half an hour in), the impressions were not dark or crisp. So I left some of the lace "stencils" on the pages and sprayed a solution I made of coffee plus cheap imitation vanilla extract and left it to dry. That worked a little better, and it made the pages smell amazing!! So there's an idea if you don't like how your pages end up smelling, the way I didn't like mine when I tried eco dying with red cabbage. 😄 (Btw, changing the pH of the cabbage water with baking soda made a gorgeous blue color! I also neutralize my coffee-tea solution with baking soda so the papers won't be acidic. Just half a teaspoon was the right amount. I used pH strips for aquariums to check.) Heads up for anyone who hasn't tried anything like this yet: the wetter the page, the more likely it will tear.

    • @luiseheinzl
      @luiseheinzl  9 месяцев назад

      Are there tutorials on how that is exactly done?

    • @megmiranda9480
      @megmiranda9480 9 месяцев назад

      @@luiseheinzl I learned the technique directly from an artist. For eco dying paper we layer damp paper (you can spritz with vinegar) on a sheet of plastic (the type house painters use as a drop cloth) lay the leaves out and cover with paper towels that have been dipped in a solution of iron oxide. Then roll all the layers tightly around a pipe so that the whole thing is covered in plastic. Tie off the ends with rubber bands to seal and tightly wrap the tube with string. The idea is to create close contact paper to leaves. Then place the bundle on a rack above boiling water, cover and steam for 90 minutes. I hope this helps give you some ideas. My one thought though is that since the papers aren't immersed in water the inks/dyes aren't going to be diluted. Can't wait to see what you come up with. Cheers, Meg

    Hi Luise! As usual I'm watching RUclips on my TV, and had to turn on my phone to write this comment. I can't wait, have to know what is that powder you put on the page at about 3inutes 50 seconds into the video. It looks like cinnamon, or maybe cocoa powder, but is it some kind of instant coffee, or regular coffee grounds? It looked like a lot! I'm also on the edge of my seat waiting to see if you put all that in the oven, since your video has "cook" in the title! Distress inks have a lot 9f resin, so I'm worried about the fumes. Hope your kitchen has very good ventilation if you are actually going to "cook" that! 💙 👩‍🍳 Update: okay, about ainute and a half later you mention it's cinnamon, and a washing machine. I'm watching this video and cringing, have you ever made your own paper? (you tear up paper, add pieces of whatever add water and make a paste, smooth it out and let it dry!) If you use steam for a bit, maybe this will work but NOT in boiling water. Good Golly Miss Molly!!! I don't think I can bear to watch the end!
