  • Just learning about the autonomic nervous system in ADHD people and I suddenly realised how it relates to my forever, and at times chronic, hiccups!!!
    Love making these connections 😂

thank you for this, i’ve been trying to find a link between adhd and hiccups and this is the only thing i could find😂 i realized that the frequency of my hiccups has reduced by like 95% for the past 5 years i’ve taken adderall- i’ve had issues with hiccups quite literally since my mom was pregnant with me but now that i take medication to treat my adhd, i almost never have hiccups

Oh wow!! I have a theory about hiccups and nervous system formation, (I had hiccups a lot when my mum was pregnant with me too!) and your story supports the theory! I’d like to know if your mum had a stressful time during her pregnancy and whether she is likely to have had high levels of cortisol while you were growing. This has a huge impact on the formation of the foetal nervous system and my learnings about Polyvagal theory make me think there could be a link!

I actually have a theory that it’s a ‘buildup’ of fight/flight energy/activation that isn’t allowed to be expressed through physiological avenues and so it’s the body’s way of venting excess sympathetic nerve energy.

I haven’t been formally diagnosed but I’ve been self diagnosed with adhd for years, I also have chronic hiccups but only at work, probably cuz I’m stressed out

I find I most frequently get hiccups when I’m in the supermarket, which I find super stressful too! They’re definitely linked to stress levels for me, and periods of higher sympathetic activity.

I have POTS and ADHD, I seemed to get slow hiccups daily for the past few days. I had Fast Hiccups sometimes in the middle of the night. But both slow and fast hiccups are very stubborn.

Oh wow! POTS and ADHD! Does that mean you have syncope? I’ve recently been speaking to someone who has started having that symptom frequently and has been searching for a cause/diagnosis. I wonder if POTS fits their situation?!
How long do your hiccups last for?
