- Matt Cavenaugh and Josefina Scaglione from West Side Story perform "Tonight" at the 2009 Tony Awards Nominations Concert held on May 18th at the Hudson Theatre.
SO PROUD OF JOSEFINA.. I'm also argentinian (vamos argentina!) and I can't believe how far she got! :)

I love Matt Cavenaugh he was born and raised in my home town and hes coming down this weekend to my school!
They compliment each other incredibly and both of their voices absolutely soar together.
i am obviously in the minority when i say Matt's voice (AND VIBRATO) is really amazing. it sounds clear, healthy, fresh, and classic all at the same time. I dont care for Josefina though.

Carol Lawrence's voice was perfect for this role. Josefina's voice is beautiful too. Both voices are perfect for the part of Maria.

This is a concert, meaning they are doing minimal acting. I haven't seen Cavenaugh in the show but I saw Josefina with Matthew Hydzik and the passion was certainly there.
I know him he's been to my school before. I live in Jonesboro AR and I go to hillcrest he also knows my music teacher
I felt the chemistry to be honest... it's not just in the voice, it's in the eyes, their expressions and the song is to be sung with a certain chemistry: that's why Sondheim and Bernstein are geniuses.
Important thing about such musicals is that you should be able to dance and sing in character and imo I felt these 2 did. I wasnt lucky enough to see the bway show :( but if I did I might have agreed with you.
so i just read one of the highest rated comments, saying matt's voice isn't strong at all.
.....ummm...did you guys hear the notes he was hitting? the rich vibrato? the smooth sound? the sheer ease with which he sings? not to mention that wonderful A sitting in his head voice?
maybe this person means someone different, surely they can't mean matt.
Fascinating how people feel qualified to judge and rate... AllI wanna say is: they are real singers, singing live. Not a bunch of teenagers syncing to the dull auto-tuned studio version of their song.
for "real singers" they're pretty mediocre but okay!

hilarious that you think this performance somehow represents an elevated level of musical ability. They're both not very good!
not that anyone will listen to my opinion but I think they're both very professional singers. Very talented and in control. Anyone who slags them off is obviously just jealous. I tend to agree that, despite their talent, their voices grate a bit. Nonetheless, on their own they're brilliant.

I think they did great but thats partly because my school band went to New York and we saw West Side Story....IT WAS AWESOME!!!
I've seen Josefina on Argentinean telenovelas, I never thought she was working in Broadway. Heck! I never thought se could sing! Personally I really liked her voice, it's not the best of the best but she could potentially get better over time. So far I was very surprised with her interpretation and I'm very intrigued on seeing her as Maria. The one who I'm having trouble with is Matt, I'm not sure about him, there is just something about his voice that I don't like, and again, I would like to see his Tony so I can really appreciate him.

oh! yes thats it exactly! compared to Marni Nixon in the movie and others on Broadway she just doesnt add up, but that doesnt mean shes bad. Also, i think it was a little slower than it should have been.
it may be her "first" here, but she is definitely not a novice. She did many things in "broadway" theaters in Argentina before she came here.
Where her voice gets lost against Matt's, she definitely outshines him.
I don't love his voice, but he's so cute so he makes up for it with his looks. And some people may not like it, but the people that cast him did and I think they know what they're doing. Give him some credit. There are people out there with better voices, but he's Tony. There's nothing you can do about it. I think his voice is good, minus the vibrato on every note. I also loveeeee josefina scaglione's voice. She was so good live!

The note wasnt sour, but its hard to hit notes that high perfectly every single time.

I didn't mean that exactly, more that i like her voice better and think she fits the character maria better than he does as Tony.
@kayandmiguel211 no the best Tony and Maria are Richard Beymer and Natalie Wood as actors and Marni Nixon and Jimmy Bryant as singers.
Those 4 persons will ever be Tony and Maria
I love them both, but this performance was a tad sub-par for me. Was the tempo a little fast, or am I imagining things?

I guess we share different opinions, but there is a good reason why he is no longer doing the show.
I felt is was a bit slow for me. It was lacking energy on his part...but I'm really loving Josefina's voice. I think she sets the standard for Maria...looks, voice, everything.
listen to the original broadway cast recording of westside story. by the way, they were the first maria I saw, too.
you have the correct names but you're thinking of the movie version which came out in 1961, not the 1957 stage version. for the correct facts, look at GypsyPrincess1486's comment.

That girl is a true talent. Her voice is astonishing, great feeling, too. The guy's quite the dissapointment, to be honest. Can't believe he had such a role judging by this performance. Good old Bernstein would probably be quite dissapointed.
i like how they pronounced 'address' clearly. i never knew what they were saying there until just now.

Umm, I think I would know that. I'm from Colombia and we have a way different accent there... I'm saying that she has an accent already, it's not hard to do a Puerto Rican accent and I really don't think changing her already existing accent would affect her singing. I said Spanish before, because many people think she is white. I was generalizing when I said "Spanish." I know the differences. Thank you.

But on the other hand, I saw WSS few weeks ago and they replaced tony by now... and the new one is better.

I've hardly seen him act, only heard his voice. But yes, I agree. If you aren't feeling what the characters are feeling, and the chemistry between them isn't strong, then the show is all around much weaker, even if it's West Side Story :P
I guess it's because it's her broadway debut so... still she's gorgeous.

they are both singing through their nose!! i think its because josefina is trying to sing with a spanish accent.

try listening to her "Libertango" version. She has a classical training... how many 21 year old girls you know with full opera voice?

He uses too much vibrato and his voice is a bit annoying if you ask me. She is beautiful and with a powerful and sweet voice. Nevertheless, they have chemistry which means they can act while singing the song.
im not sure but there is something wrong with thier voices. i think they are sort of trying to make it into a real song, not a Broadway song if that makes any sense. They aren't necessarily bad, however.
@kayandmiguel211 well i respect your choice, but there were many actors and singers who played Tony and Maria, however compare to Natalie Wood and Richard Beymer, they are forgotten! when we think "West Side Story" we immidiately think about the great movie of 1961 and the actors and Marni Nixon and Jimmy briant who dubbed them
lack of passion in THIS performance, but at the stage they do it A LOT better great voices

I don't get all the people complaining about other people's opinions. That's what comments are for. I personally don't like his vibrato, I think he's overusing it and it sounds mechanical to me. And I don't watch Glee...

I like his voice well enough, but her voice, and their two voices together... makes me, literally, put my fingers in my ears. Ugh.
She is singing a role that doesn´t need weight... It´s a musical, not an opera, and she is not playing The Queen of the Night...
she's more spanish than she is english. so it could be easier for her.
Um.... Is it just me, or is she REALLY nasally? like unpleasantly? (And he took it a little overboard with the vibrato...) Overall performance: 4 out of 10.

I won't say they are bad but considering all those that came before them I am not that impressed.
Who would believe this is actually Broadway quality performing. This is like a limp high school production, and the man as Tony, in particular, is totally hopeless.
I don't think they're that bad they're good but I hate when people add that vibrato to their voice it's obnoxious.
