I really hope that the child/teen actors currently involved in Disney Channel/Nickelodeon sitcoms aren't being exploited, and are being looked after well.
I think for Nick now, the kids are much safer without Dan Schendier because let's be honest, there were hardly any other sitcom creators besides him and Scott Fellows. I don't hear anything about Scott Fellows but it's sad that Nick knew about Dan but didn't care.
The Teletubbies scandal was just ridiculous. Creepy as they may be in hindsight, the accusations against Tinky Winky and his actor are based solelyon paranoia and bigotry, though sadly, would probably still get him fired today.
Religious people make idiotic things up about a children's show, regular people on the street sometimes take it as fact or they laugh about it, suddenly that children's show is corrupted forever. It's really pathetic how people are.
The ones I know about are Fuller House, Diff’rent Strokes, Pair of Kings, Jake Paul, and Andi Mack. The Andi Mack scandal was the most disturbing of all since he was around children and he was being inappropriate to children in private. Disney and other kid networks need to be mindful of who they hire for the adults so that we don't get another Dan Schnieder.
#8 was a shocker to me. Giving a pregnant actor the boot because you don't want to write her character as a teen mother? I know my mom grew up with shows like this, but there could have been a few story lines that the show could have taken on involving a pregnant teen. But what they chose wasn't it, unless the network forced them to let her go. This was also the 1970s, so I guess teenage pregnancies were looked down on with scorn, as opposed to the 1990s and 2000s where network studios were able to work around their younger actors getting pregnant. Tommy Kirk in Old Yeller looked so much like Wil Wheaton in Stand By Me, despite the movies debuting almost 30 years apart.
The show's premise was much too sappy for such a topic, and it would have completely derailed what it had become... a show for "What you talkin' 'bout, Willis?" Arnold's character. Shows like One Day at a Time would have been better suited for that at the time. Strokes spinoff The Facts of Life did a teen pregnancy story, but not with a main character.

It's probably what started the whole 'special episode' thing for sitcoms that dealt with serious problems. I think it's more like what graham said and they didn't want to write her character as a mom as she was supposed to be the innocent/pure character and they didn't want to 'ruin' her or the network didn't want to touch on the subject.

Two words: Soupy Sales! You're too young to probably know about him, but he had a popular kids show back in the 60's that was wildly subversive and occasionally adult. He got in huge trouble by ending his live broadcast by encouraging his young viewers to "tiptoe into their parents' bedrooms and take those funny green pieces of paper with pictures of U.S. presidents from their pants and pocketbooks and put them in an envelope and mail them to me and I'll send you a postcard from Puerto Rico!" And..........they did it!!

Advising teens to not get pregnant is taboo these days. Apparently youngsters are incapable of any form of self-control - According to a lot of adults that are incapable of self-control. Making fun of anyone suggesting _abstinence,_ for example has been the standard reaction of activists for years now....

They forgot about Elmo’s puppeteer Kevin Clash for grooming minors, Sesame Street fired him for dating guys that weren’t adults at the time! Also the Teletubbies controversy wasn’t because of Tinky Winky, it was because of its lack of educational value for preschoolers and it’s psychedelic influence that even some PBS stations pulled the show for not being educational enough as Sesame Street and Mr. Rogers!
You got most of the Elmo one wrong. And he wasn't fired, he quit. He quit because he basically built Elmo from the ground up and was sad that the character and the show was being trashed because of his personal life.

There was no way they'd write her character as being pregnant as a teenager. They brought her back as a recurring character after her pregnancy was over, and she was even back in the intro credits for the final season.

Rip Tommy Kirk you’ll forever be missed 😢 I loved watching him on old yeller his performance in that was pretty amazing. I know it was a sad movie, but I still like watching him on that movie from time to time. It’s sad that he’s not alive anymore. Only remaining cast member of the film is the lady who played Elizabeth Circe either I’ve seen some of his films, but old yeller will always be his best work

The main reason that Nickeloden couldn't make excuses for Jason Biggs anymore, was kind of their own fault. Not that I agree with anything Jason Biggs tweeted, they were terrible. But Nickeloden linked the voice actors' twitter accounts to the TMNT website. So that was the only reason parents found his tweets. If Nickeloden didn't there probably would not have called for Jason to be fired.

Wow I never knew that about Tommy Kirk... sadly, thinking about it and knowing the history of the Hollywood industry towards children (including Disney's own history) I wouldn't be surprised if that was how he'd been treated as an underage boy as well but powerful figures can get away with that kind of predatory behavior if they got caught. When I saw the Tinky Winky thumbnail, I figured that would be the 2nd or 1st pick. I didn't know about the actor wanting the character to be gay (nor anything honestly regarding this controversy), but I don't see anything wrong with LGBT+ rep in shows if it's done in a respectful manner! Now if the character/actor had malicious intent with it being gay, that's another story, but if they just want to have a good representation out there, I don't see anything wrong with it; The character doesn't have to be having sexual relations with anyone, and could just be more "buddy buddy" with chars of the same gender, and heck, the actions can just be subtle and not super "out there" for those concerned about their precious babies being scarred.
Let's be correct about this - the problem with Tommy Kirk was not that the person he was with was underage, it's that he was with another male. TODAY you can talk about age appropriate, but you have to remember back then that the teenage boy in question was as gulity of illegal conduct as Kirk was. You should have also mentioned that Kirk was also dealing with alcohol and drug issues from the stress of having to live a fake life in public, to the point of the studio forcing him to 'date' Annette Funicello. Actually, a lot of what happened to his acting career was he was charged for possession of drugs. It turned out he had a prescription for them, but by the time it was cleared up, it had cost him some major jobs, including appearing with John Wayne and Dean Martin in The Sons of Katie Elder.
I'm surprised the thing with Aunt Viv on The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air wasn't on here. I know it wasn't technically a kids show, but a lot of families watched it.
I think ( IF you're referring to TeleTubbies ) that it's because it's seen as the purple one is carrying a handbag 👜 and having a male voice , that it's interpreted as that character being gay Or identifying as MTF trans . ♑️✍️🇸🇯🇦🇺

@@fanofeverything30465 No, she was fired because she actually DID get pregnant, which she was aware from the start (and thus said she wouldn''t) that she couldn't do because it wouldn't fit her character. There was no way they'd write her character as being pregnant as a teenager. They brought her back as a recurring character after her pregnancy was over, and she was even back in the intro credits for the final season.

Rip Tommy Kirk you’ll forever be missed 😢 I loved watching him on old yeller his performance in that was pretty amazing. I know it was a sad movie, but I still like watching him on that movie from time to time. It’s sad that he’s not alive anymore. Only remaining cast member of the film is the lady who played Elizabeth Circe either I’ve seen some of his films, but old yeller will always be his best work

The main reason that Nickeloden couldn't make excuses for Jason Biggs anymore, was kind of their own fault. Not that I agree with anything Jason Biggs tweeted, they were terrible. But Nickeloden linked the voice actors' twitter accounts to the TMNT website. So that was the only reason parents found his tweets. If Nickeloden didn't there probably would not have called for Jason to be fired.

When I saw the Tinky Winky thumbnail, I figured that would be the 2nd or 1st pick. I didn't know about the actor wanting the character to be gay (nor anything honestly regarding this controversy), but I don't see anything wrong with LGBT+ rep in shows if it's done in a respectful manner! Now if the character/actor had malicious intent with it being gay, that's another story, but if they just want to have a good representation out there, I don't see anything wrong with it; The character doesn't have to be having sexual relations with anyone, and could just be more "buddy buddy" with chars of the same gender, and heck, the actions can just be subtle and not super "out there" for those concerned about their precious babies being scarred.

Let's be correct about this - the problem with Tommy Kirk was not that the person he was with was underage, it's that he was with another male. TODAY you can talk about age appropriate, but you have to remember back then that the teenage boy in question was as gulity of illegal conduct as Kirk was. You should have also mentioned that Kirk was also dealing with alcohol and drug issues from the stress of having to live a fake life in public, to the point of the studio forcing him to 'date' Annette Funicello.
Actually, a lot of what happened to his acting career was he was charged for possession of drugs. It turned out he had a prescription for them, but by the time it was cleared up, it had cost him some major jobs, including appearing with John Wayne and Dean Martin in The Sons of Katie Elder.
