I’ve lived in China for 22 years and you used to see much bigger ones on the street markets exploding into sacks! The sound was immense!
In Japan they had em on the back of kei-trucks for popping rice.
Don't you need to soak the rice a little first? Is that what the Slow Mo guys got wrong here?@@bokusimondesu

Sometimes I forget the high-speed actually has no sound. The little sound effects that get added in post are always spot-on!
I dunno, the "pbpbpbpt!" sound at 3:50, is that in post or a reaction noise?
i'm pretty sure thats the real sound slowed down to match the frames, right??

@@wdhewson- I came to the comments to find that out as well. From the looks he may have cut/burn it his palm on something, enough to warrant the bandage. Sure hope it wasnt anything to do with the vid today, because that banage was fresh and the fact he wasnt using the hand made it look like it was done within the past 12 to 24 hours.

Most of the stuff I eat is off the ground or in the ground! Potatoes, onions, cucumbers, carrots, cabbage, pumpkins, strawberries, etc. haha 🌈

Quick tip for the rice trick, use whole grain rice instead of white rice. The “pop” comes from the release of water inside the kernel. A lot of this comes from the endosperm that is removed when white rice is refined. The bran and outer husk will increase the pressure inside the rice kernel as well so more of them should pop.
it looked like they soaked it in water for a bit to try and get that same effect
@@MSusername69 It only looks like Dan poured water in before loading it, not soaking it.
That or do what all chefs do when making fried rice, use leftovers from last night.
@@UnknowinglyDerpyFried rice and puffed rice are definitely not the same thing. Fewer peas in the latter, at any rate.
Parboiling would also help!
5:19 seeing the pressure gauge move that much and that fast even in slow mo is crazy
From 05:17 to 05:32 you can observe how the stray kernel that went for Gav starts out small and brown and actually slowly expands in flight while it gets puffy-white 🤩
I don’t think I’ll ever get bored of the Slow Mo Guys.
Their chemistry keeps it fun too. I always laugh watching them have fun together

I really love your sounds, especially the little details like the metallic *pling* when the lid hits the case.
Those poppers are normally used with tea lights (mini candles) had you used a candle and not the blow torch the pop corn and rice likely would not have been burnt. The candle allows the temperature and pressure to build slowly giving more uniform puffing to the food.
I cannot believe that I've never heard the English translation of "värmeljus" before, and that I've never thought of finding out.
@@Zestrayswede To be clear, teljus is also a word for them in Swedish, it's the older word even! They came about to use to keep tea kettles warm hence the name.
@@Zestrayswede The tea lights in the US are about 38 mm (1.5 inches) in diameter and 13 mm (0.5 inches) tall and come in a thin aluminum cup typically with a single wick.

Are we just supposed to ignore the fact that Dan is holding a miniature shovel at 4:40 without any explanation or backstory?
It's attention build-up for the next episode: explosive shrink ray in slow motion. That's how Dan got his injury - a little mishap with the shrink ray in reverse while handling the garden rake (the shovel was fine though).

@@MisterGames No, it really is just a funny looking spoon he uses to dig out the contents of the pressure cooker, you can clearly see it at 6:55.
if i had to guess i'd say its probably something for moving around gunpowder or similar, which they're probably using for another video in that shooting session

8:00 IDEA: soak separate portions of rice in COLOURED water, then on the day mix them all togeather in a bag, then portion out several portions of rainbow rice.

I was in China once and passed a street vendor lady using this... thing... just a bit larger! and when we where away like 50 meters I heard an explosion and lady screaming! I really hope she is ok... But these things are not probably the best practice for pop corn making! Can the metal really handle the pressure? Is the pressure gauge accurate?!
More importantly: Can it be made into something useful that can conduct electricity for cooking?
I feel the only way for these to be safe is to build them like actual cannons, with at least thick enough walls and thin enough lid & seal in a safe orientation to prevent explosion and fragmentation..

I would imagine the latch is the weakest portion of the whole contraption and thus the path of least resistance is the intended opening if the thing was going to blow at all.
I mean they've only been using them for hundreds of years, so we'll probably never know if the handle can take the pressure.
The thing I appreciate the most in these videos is the sound design

@@Allangulon Kettle corn that I've had and seen before is cooked in a giant kettle pot stirred around with a big ol wooden paddle and the flavor is added at cooking.

I think the "burnt" was because of the extreme heat from that torch? With a normal heat source, it might not be burnt? Maybe?
This bought back childhood memories for my Chinese wife. When corn wasn't available or too expensive they made puffed rice.
I find it crazy that dan soaked the popcorn before loading it. popcorn is pop corn because it has the perfect moisture level inside to facilitate an exceptional pop.

This was way better than I expected.
I didn't pay enough attention to the "explosive" in the title and was momentarily confused about why you were in the quarry, but goodness!! Love that you had the idea to do rice and then actually did it - one of many things I love about you guys
So many innuendos coming to mind with this video but I’m going to maintain a modicum of decorum and say the rice explosion was a much better happy ending for me than the popcorn. 😂 For those that didn’t understand Dan’s “sawn-off” comment at 3:30 he’s referring to a shotgun that has a portion of its barrel cut/sawn off. Looks like something went askew in rehearsals so I hope his hand mends quickly. 💪🏼😎👍🏼
