When I was studying music at BYU-Idaho, my lessons teacher wanted me to listen and read score for my two hours of daily practice. I played the trumpet back in the day (and I still have it, but it's been put away for 4 years). I went to the University library and checked out Mozart's Requiem, for both CD and the score book. This has been one of my favorite pieces of music ever since I discovered it over 35 years ago. Now, I believe I've found my favorite version. At first, I thought I was having technical difficulties with my phone because of the slow pace. Then, I realized the pace was intentional. These folks wrung out every sumptuous note for all they were, and are, worth. This is simply brilliant. How wonderful to discover this (all over again) in the height of the COVID-19 pandemic❤🙏
This is music. Real music. It's absolutely sublime! I've listened to this probably a million times and it still gets me every time. Mozart was truly a prophetic musician who gave the world the most sensual and divine piece of music ever written. There's so much power in every note and every measure. RIP god of true music and thank you for blessing us with such a masterpiece.
Masterpiece! Probably the first classical music tape I bought when I was so young that I can't remember when... As a choral bass singer, just hoping to sing it one day, at least once in my lifetime
So beautiful it reaches deep down into my soul. I have heard this live 4 times in my life but never experienced it as beautiful as this. Perfect! Great job !So much pure talent not computer altered junk, just pure talent. Most people today do not realize how much Mozart's music is still all around us like most of the music in the bug's bunny cartoons is Mozart and I heard a little of the requiem on a car commercial the other day. Timeless music for sure!
This has to be the best version of the Requiem I have ever heard!!! This is my first time hearing about Karl Bohm and after looking him up it's a shame how few recordings he has done. Bohm has instantly become my favorite conductor
I think this is how Requiem is intended to be performed. The best version I have heard so far. Very balanced sound, right tempo, every note is heard, thanks to Karl Bohm. (I hate it when conductors use too much of pp and ff throughout this piece.) The chorus/orchestra are possibly the best in the world and it shows (sounds). To top it, the soloists are also great. The soprano (G. Janowitz) is exceptional here. Truly remarkable perfomance in all regards. Thanks for posting the full version!
I have listen to many versions of Mozart's Requiem such as Karajan/VPO, Shaw/Atlanta Symphony, Abbado/BPO, Davis/ BBC Symphony, Mariner/ASMF, Solti/VPO, etc. And in my honest opinion Bohm's recording here just completely blows them all in the water. OUTSTANDING PERFORMANCE.
+TheLastOfTheFinest80 sorry but Karajan + Wiener Ph. /Anna Tomowa Sintow still rules..just my opinion, here at 1.42 they 're breaking the rythm..no way...also 2.29...
I have 17 versions of the Requiem, and this is my fauvorite, the most epic and majestic, and i like the slow tempo. The most spiritual is the Celibidache's version.
Thanks for posting this video. This is one of the best interpretations of his Requiem I've ever heard, and watching it being performed so well is simply thrilling. I felt chills at several especially evocative parts, which help appreciate the profundity of Mozart's gifts. This will be performed until the end of time, inspiring each generation with its supernatural grace and beauty.
I listened to this every night as I slept Sophomore year in college and then stopped. When I had my child in NM in 1998 they gave you a Mozart cd when you had a baby and a baby blanket. I had my children go to sleep to Mozart's requiem every night for their first 10 years of life. I am ignorant of music, but know I like a certain version of this. I just found this Karl Bohm on youtube and I recognize it to be the one we own; the cd case is long lost and cd is worn. Thank you for uploading so I can now see what I have listened to for so many years. All of the people who can sing like this, play music like this, direct this and Mozart for writing it are true angels to the world! It moves me to tears every time because it is beyond beautiful! Thank you!
Knock-out performance. And then some. Everyone at the top of their game here. Very moving. Simply fantastic singing by the chorus. • Wiener Symphoniker, Wiener Staatsopernchor, Karl Böhm (conductor) • soloists: Gundula Janowitz (soprano), Christa Ludwig (alto), Peter Schreier (tenor) ,Walter Berry (bass) • Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart / Requiem in D minor K 626 • Recorded in 1971 in Vienna Thanks for uploading.
Wow. Gotta appreciate music man. I really don’t understand people when they say they can’t stand this music. When they use the phrase “the art of music” I believe it should only be in reference to something like this.
the reason almost 2 million people have loved this performance is the outstanding performers one and all . Gundula Janowitz (Sopran), Christa Ludwig (Alt), Peter Schreier (Tenor), Walter Berry (Bass), Chor der Wiener Staatsoper und Wiener Symphoniker unter Karl Böhm. Wiener Phil at the Piaristenkirche, 1971-you will never see that cast again . Only the Best .oh to have been there .
The pace is slow but the effect is overwhelming. In some other conductor's hands this pace would simply be lugubrious. Bohm works magic and astounds the listener.
He did the same for Figaro. It's magical, like he's one of the few people to have ever truly understood Mozart's work and gives the right emphasis to every phrase. I imagine it's similar to looking into Mozart's head when he wrote the music and hearing what he wanted when composing... and every performance since he initially imagined it, even those conducted by himself, might not have gotten close to what he was thinking.
i played violin for 12 years. this piece is a complex one to play and put together. This is by far the best version of Mozart Requiem I've ever heard. It might have even brought Lazarus back from the dead.
This performance of Mozart's requiem is something more profound than merely beautiful. It is awe-inspiring, relentless, severe, austere, and spacious. Bohm has a dream vocal quartet, orchestra, chorus, and setting. There is an urgency to this interpretation that, to my ears, is missing on so many hurried, lighter performances. I have read many comments here, before writing my own; to say that the performance is "slow" is, to my ears, to miss the point of the cosmic drama being enacted. In this Mozart Requiem, there is no place to hide from the terror of death ; the gravity of the moment trumps mere beauty. There are other great Mozart Requiems; there is not one "only" performance of anything, at least to my ears. But I will be returning to this performance for an astringent reminder of human mortality.
How well you describe what I experience in listening to this performance; its austerity, its harshness almost, is quite unlike any other. It's nice to have someone put words to it.
Mozart was the greatest musical talent ..hands down.. His favorite was opera and the human voice and at 35 not many surpassed him in those genres..Handel was good and Puccini. But come on. Mozart was from a different universe.
This person's requiem can only be said to be splendid. It's as good as Karajan's requiem and I listen to it a lot. I will never forget the shock when I first heard it. Thank you for posting.
Indeed - and that includes the German dialect of Latin used in this performance, which is a little closer to the authentic classical Latin of Imperial Rome at her peak from two millennia ago than the Italian "Church" Latin that is used - most unfortunately!!!! - almost universally these days. [Why should singers have it as easy as possible in comparison to the instrumentalists??? Just because of words?!??] Yes, the slow tempi Karl Böhm uses here lend both profundity AND urgency as well as relentlessness of a sort impossible with faster performances. For once, a piece of conducting that really allows me to like this conductor (aside from Berg's "Wozzeck" and this, I really find him quite unexceptional and even irritating in Wagner and Richard Strauss) - well done!!!
First, the German pronunciation of the Latin (as opposed to the Italian "Church-Latin"); second, the performance-practice of that time (it's not tainted by the "historically-informed practice" which has in my opinion virtually KILLED so much of this repertoire in my eyes and taste thanks to its rigidity and bigotry against anything "extraneous" to then!!!).
V a l d e m a r q u i j a n o = Supremacist ... German yet? Although you display a Castilian name ... little wonder! Birds of a feather fly together, isn't it ?
Wow. 249 people have "thumbs downed" the single greatest musical composition to bless the ears, emotions and souls of mankind. 40 years after my Da asked me to listen to this, I still get chills every time I listen. I feel that the only piece close to this level of perfection is the opening Kyrie from his Great Mass in C minor.
Definitely the most emotional music ever, something not from this world, a message from the eternity. Only Bohm undertstood, what Mozart wanted to say.
Well I wouldn't exactly say only Bohm understood what Mozart wanted to say. That's a little over the top. This is my favorite recording of it. But lots of people know and love this Requiem that came straight from heaven. Not everyone has the ability or the experience nor the training nor the venue to conduct an orchestra to bring pass the interpretation you like.
The 'Requiem' is a captivating story about our mortality, the Christian epic theme. A divine composition so well performed, lyrical while so very precise in intonation. Conductor K. Bohm is superior guidance to the chorous and orchestra in the realization of Mozart's presentation is second to none. A superb performance yet sublimely delicate, precise, conveying what the composer intended.
Without a doubt, one of the most powerful classic recordings. It's up there with Colin Davis 1967 recording with the BBC ensemble. The experience of the Sanctus is undescribable. The sound of Heaven!!

@johann supper It's not a hoax. The conspiracy stuff is getting annoying.
@johann supper That is exactly how Christian conspiracy theories work. They repeat it until every follower believes it.
@johann supper No.
@johann supper I don't lie.
Instant goosebumps!!! This Requiem makes the soul soar. I read once that Mozart wrote this for his own funeral...what a send off for such a genius.
❤🔥
Such joy to perform this with any choir which I have done and apreciate that. The memory will ialways be 😮there.😢😮
Thank you Mozart. Thank you Karl Bohm. Pretty grateful for this master piece! So heavenly!
The best Mozart Requiem, I have heard. Karl Bohm in his best performance.
Masterpiece! Probably the first classical music tape I bought when I was so young that I can't remember when... As a choral bass singer, just hoping to sing it one day, at least once in my lifetime
That soprano is incredible. So much power and control.
Gundula Janowitz
@@annalirycsoprano прекрасно великолепно
This is so powerful, so magic that every time that I hear Requiem ,I have tears in my eyes . The best performing ever of Mozart. Thanks
❤🔥
I have listen to many versions of Mozart's Requiem such as Karajan/VPO, Shaw/Atlanta Symphony, Abbado/BPO, Davis/ BBC Symphony, Mariner/ASMF, Solti/VPO, etc. And in my honest opinion Bohm's recording here just completely blows them all in the water.
OUTSTANDING PERFORMANCE.
+TheLastOfTheFinest80 kyrie was sooooooo boring though.
+TheLastOfTheFinest80 sorry but Karajan + Wiener Ph. /Anna Tomowa Sintow still rules..just my opinion, here at 1.42 they 're breaking the rythm..no way...also 2.29...
+TheLastOfTheFinest80 becouse tempo is slow. And this is a reason - i love it too !
+TheLastOfTheFinest80 , I absolutely agree! I had chills throughout the entire performance.
Bohm is one of the indisputable authorities in performing Mozart's music. His interpretations of Mozart's symphonies and operas are also great!
I fully agree, Karl Bohm besides being one of the best conductors of the 20th century is simply the best conductor performing Mozart’s MUSIC!
Karl Böhm best Mozart interpreter I have ever seen in my life!!!
I think this is the best version of this wonderful requiem I've been so lucky to have sung! Perfect tempo!
Böhm's interpretation comes probably the closest to Mozart's terror of death and depth of emotion. Amazing performance!
Totally true.
Bohm the supreme master. With the four greatest soloists ever!
Just the perfection!!!! Mr Böhm understand Mozart in every notes!!!
Magnifique. Just Magnifique.
For me, the conductor's tempo throughout this masterpiece is 100% correct.
I have 17 versions of the Requiem, and this is my fauvorite, the most epic and majestic, and i like the slow tempo.
The most spiritual is the Celibidache's version.
You sent me to Celibidache and I am back. Celibidache lacked the power of this recording and I found it too slow.
Or rather, precisely because of the slower pace. It opens up the voices. They sound incredibly alive. Simply brilliant.
Never cease to be amazed every time I listen to this master piece. Every part of the sequence is a winner! Mozart must have been proud.
Thank you!
Amen
Knock-out performance. And then some. Everyone at the top of their game here. Very moving. Simply fantastic singing by the chorus.
• Wiener Symphoniker, Wiener Staatsopernchor, Karl Böhm (conductor)
• soloists: Gundula Janowitz (soprano), Christa Ludwig (alto), Peter Schreier (tenor) ,Walter Berry (bass)
• Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart / Requiem in D minor K 626
• Recorded in 1971 in Vienna
Thanks for uploading.
+youtubister Mozart and Bergman. I like your taste in art.

walter berry is great
Best performance ever of the requiem !!!
Wow. Gotta appreciate music man. I really don’t understand people when they say they can’t stand this music. When they use the phrase “the art of music” I believe it should only be in reference to something like this.
Love you, Bohm! So spiritual, so inteligent interpretation! Thank you!
finally, perfect speed
nahh, too slow
Praying for the conversion of my family
the reason almost 2 million people have loved this performance is the outstanding performers one and all
The Tempo Karl Böhm uses is wonderful. It makes me breath, opens the heaven. Bravo.
The pace is slow but the effect is overwhelming. In some other conductor's hands this pace would simply be lugubrious. Bohm works magic and astounds the listener.
@@larrymerkle1672 So it is. Magical, truly
I like it so much, this is my favorite presentation of Mozart Requiem....excellent...
The best version ever! So majestic! As if Mozart wrote this master piece for himself!
A brilliant description, thank you.
Mozart was the greatest musical talent ..hands down.. His favorite was opera and the human voice and at 35 not many surpassed him in those genres..Handel was good and Puccini. But come on. Mozart was from a different universe.
buzzword
Excellent description of this piece of art.
The best performance of the requiem I have ever heard!
This person's requiem can only be said to be splendid. It's as good as Karajan's requiem and I listen to it a lot. I will never forget the shock when I first heard it. Thank you for posting.
The most mozartian Requiem that one can hear. Brilliant, sumptuous, sober and perfect germanic sound.
+@Valdemarquijano "Germanic sound"? How's that relevant for a Mass sung in Latin.
absolutely right
Indeed - and that includes the German dialect of Latin used in this performance, which is a little closer to the authentic classical Latin of Imperial Rome at her peak from two millennia ago than the Italian "Church" Latin that is used - most unfortunately!!!! - almost universally these days. [Why should singers have it as easy as possible in comparison to the instrumentalists??? Just because of words?!??]
Yes, the slow tempi Karl Böhm uses here lend both profundity AND urgency as well as relentlessness of a sort impossible with faster performances.
568 now. All HIPsters.

Definitely, the most beautiful version on RUclips.
The most version everytime, and everywhere.
...and not only on You Tube!
Definitely the most emotional music ever, something not from this world, a message from the eternity. Only Bohm undertstood, what Mozart wanted to say.
Agree
Well I wouldn't exactly say only Bohm understood what Mozart wanted to say. That's a little over the top. This is my favorite recording of it. But lots of people know and love this Requiem that came straight from heaven. Not everyone has the ability or the experience nor the training nor the venue to conduct an orchestra to bring pass the interpretation you like.
Yes, definitely one of the best versions of the Requiem.
Not "one of the" but simply THE BEST! MAESTRO BÖHM!
@@maroni64 but the Confutatis is too slow. It should have fervor and desperation.
Excellent performance! Is the best version that I have heard..
MOst likely the most powerful recording ever made for Mozart's Requiem!
agree. Bohm is a master.
Absolutely I agree totally!!!
look for the recording of Guilini
@@gabriel1chan Sir, where would one find this recording?

La mejor versión, sin duda.
Remembering KARL BÖHM on his birthday today !
Born: August 28, 1894, Graz, Austria
Died: August 14, 1981, Salzburg, Austria
I share the same birthday with him, but I was born in 1949.
The sound of Heaven!!
this is my first hearing for Mozart's requiem. it has been my best version for decades since when I was 20 years old.
