This is my first-time listen and reaction to Yonkers by Tyler, the Creator (from a rocker perspective). Enjoy! Видеоклипы
For the bass to be heard properly headphones are required
Pretty sure he has studio monitors. If he does he can hear it better than headphones
ye a good sub will get you right
In regards to your comments about the lack of complexity in the beat; he originally made this beat in a few minutes as a joke replicating "shitty New York beats" but he ended up liking it I think.
The chorus "Wolf Haley, Golf Wang" Wolf Haley is the name he uses when he directs his music videos and he was part of a Hip Hop collective called "ODD FUTURE WOLF GANG KILL THEM ALL". Golf Wang = Wolf Gang. He also runs a music festival called Flog Gnaw which is the same thing but backwards.
These little wrinkles are nice to know about. It helps a lot when listening to his songs for the first time. I think I would have been totally in the dark on 'She' had I not done 'Yonkers' first and learned about Tyler's alter egos.
Not watching the video is a crime
This song was his first viral hit and I think a lot of it really had to do with the music video.
I will say you probably won’t get to whole picture of Tyler as an artist without the music videos, so even if you don’t want to watch them on camera I’d recommend checking them out afterwards!
(and just a heads up, lyrics are usually more accurate on Genius, I know at least a lot of the old lyric videos for his songs contain some misprints and really bad sound quality)
In this song Tyler is gong back and forth with his alter ego Wolf Haley while talking to his therapist, so it’s kinda supposed to be a song of contradictions (as set up by the first bar; ”I’m a fucking walking paradox - no I’m not”). He has a lot of alter egos (Ace is another one that was mentioned in this song) through out his early albums especially, it all makes more sense when you listen to an album froms start to finish.
So he did a lot of ”offensive” lyrics like this which at one point got him banned from performing in both New Zealand and the UK for some years. But coming from a rock/metal background I think you can agree song lyrics can contain pretty heinous and exaggerated/fictional themes without actually reflecting the artist's personal beliefs.
I just watched the video and I do agree that it adds a lot more to the song. However, I'm glad I focused on the lyrics first. It's easier for me to digest the songs that way. If I try to do lyrics and beat and video all together, I fear I'll end up missing out on all three. Maybe I can figure out a way to incorporate all three going forward.
The song makes a lot more sense now knowing the alter ego portion. I got that impression from the song, but was thinking more of a growing insanity pushing him toward suicide rather than alter egos. Good stuff though. Listening to it again, with the video, the song is quickly growing on me.
Thanks for another great write up!
Tyler contradicts himself a lot in this song which is explained by the paradox line. Green paper gold teeth and pregnant golden retrieves are synonyms for money diamonds and bitches. It’s actually a really cool line :)
'Yonkers' is Horrorcore/Horror Rap/Death Rap whatever you want to call it (they're different names for the same genre). And this was kind of Tyler's realm for I would say the first two albums, before he started leaning much more into the Soul and R&B/Hip Hop. And I don't think he's sacrificed anything in that transition, to me it's all the same musical genius.
The way he always has a completely different sound is amazing. I dont know any other artist that has successfully branched into different genres like tyler has (especially nowadays)
@@taxi_vader I mean Kanye is way more diverse and has different sounds but I get what you're saying.
@@anijeepa he’s no way more diverse, more diverse but not that far ahead of Tyler
@@astro.8888tyler is more good at genre bending than focusing on one completely different main genre
Would love to see more reactions to tyler especially as he changed. Tyler was also young when Yonkers got big I believe 19 maybe 20 but the previous mixtape called bastard was made during his senior year so there's a story between the first 3 albums.
I'm all for doing more, and I have a small list of songs (She, Tamale, See You Again, Who Dat Boy, Earfquake, New Magic Wand) to pull from, but if you can recommend an order that follows his progression, that'd be great. I'd love to see his evolution over time. I can't imagine hitting it big at 19 or 20, and I'm curious how he dealt with things like money in fame in regards to his music.
@@bobthepoppop Those are pretty much in order, She (and Yonkers) are from his second album (Goblin, 2011), Tamale is from his third album (Wolf, 2013), See You Again and Who Dat Boy from his fourth album (Flower Boy, 2017) and the last two from his latest album (Igor, 2019).
I could add some more suggestions too if you really wanna do a deep dive:
Bastard (Bastard, 2009)
She, Tron Cat, Golden (Goblin, 2011)
Domo23, IFHY, Rusty, Tamale, Answer (Wolf, 2013)
Deathcamp, Fucking Young, Cherry Bomb* (Cherry Bomb, 2015)
*just a weird personal favorite lol
Fuck it, What the Fuck Right Now (loosies, 2015-16)
Foreword, See You Again, Who Dat Boy, Garden Shed, 911/Mr Lonely (Flower Boy, 2017)
Potato Salad, OKRA (loosies, 2018)
Earfquake, I Think, Running Out of Time, New Magic Wand, What’s Good, (Igor, 2019)
@@yra9568 lol, you guys are killing it! I love seeing this much detail coming in. I have an idea going forward, and hopefully I can get the time for another video in the next day or two. Thank you for all the suggestions, it really is awesome.
3:30 Anwar is one of Tyler's buddies
The line "Green paper, gold teeth and pregnant golden retrievers is
All I want, f#ck money, diamonds and b!tches, don't need them."
Is a contradiction. Green paper could be equated with money, gold teeth.
Pregnant golden retrievers/female dogs could be equated with b!tches.
Wolf Haley is an alter-ego Tyler strives to be, Wolf seems to tell Tyler that green paper, gold teeth and pregnant gold retrievers is what he wants. But Tyler proceeds to deny it by saying "f#ck diamonds and b#tches don't need them. I'm terrible at explaining hopefully you understood.
Thank you for explaining this. It does make more sense now. This portion did confuse me, but I also didn't understand the alter egos that were happening. This makes it easier to understand
@@bobthepoppopthe first 3 albums of his are like a connecting storyline
about to watch you go through tylers stuff this was a great start lol
its a sin that you didnt watch the music video to this
“I believe Marvin Gaye is an artist” is crazy to say 😂
this is the only review of this song where i’m actually interested in the commentary in between the pauses
Youre a good reviewer. Keep up the good work and youll keep gaining subscribers
Thank you :)
Great reaction Bob
When it came out, the shit was legendary.
When Tyler performs this song live, he’ll straight up say after he doesn’t know what he was even talking about lmao
so the actual lore of this song, is its tyler fighting with his alter ego wolf hailey, wolf hailey is the guy tyler wants to be, almost like tyler durdan from fight club, and thats why he contradicts himself a lot in the song, because hailey is the opposite of tyler, you can actually tell when hailey is singing, signified by the deep voice layered over tylers, wolf hailey is not to be confused with dr tc (tyler conscience) and tron cat (basically the devil on his sholder telling him to do bad things (evident by the song tron cat))
i would love to see a reaction to bastard, tyler's first album
So as controversial as Tyler is he’s managed to kind of avoid all the shit ppl say and he’s only gotten bigger. When you see him use offensive language specifically the n slur or the f slur he can say those slurs bc he is black and bisexual. Back then he wasn’t out of the closet tho so him using the f slur caused a lot of controversy. He says a lot of other shit that kind of makes his earlier music hard to enjoy but anything off of flower boy or Igor and maybe even cherry bomb are enjoyable. And golf is his clothing brand.
Some good insight here, Lexsi, thank you
Marvin gate sings the old son " lets get it on"
i searched him up and anwar is just some guy with long dark red dreadlocks
Yes. Listen to it again, just watch the music video and do an additional thoughts on it! haha
This song is more barebones and straightforward.
Marvin Gaye was Motown.
Yonkers is the 3rd largest city in New York.
Nope, nothing standard about Tyler! 😂 he's a creative genius 🙌🏼❤
YES! It's a total Trent Reznor vibe! 😁
I have to say I'm happy to cross paths with someone who enjoys both Tyler and Trent. Pretty cool.
@@bobthepoppop Same! I absolutely love them both; two super creative musicians. 😊
I appreciate your take on music- who is your favorite rock band of all time?
@@jend927 Of all time? Man... that's tough. So many greats come to mind. I'll just toss some names of those I love: Tool, Mastodon, Alice in Chains, Rush, Pink Floyd, NIN, Chevelle, Queens of the Stone Age, and so many more. How lucky we are to live in an age where we can listen to all of them at the touch of a button.
@@bobthepoppop Yeah, sorry..that was a pretty tough question. 😅 It's so amazing 🙌🏼 I like a lot on your list! My favorite is Led Zeppelin. Hands down. 🐐❤
P.S. you should listen to Tyler's 'I Aint Got Time'.. 6 years after 'Yonkers'!
@@jend927 Zeppelin is an all-time great, for sure.
Fun fact: in the music video he actually ate that roach but instantly spat it out and got alot of money for it
Marvin Gaye is Soul music. Most beautiful genre of music. Uplifting, positive, etc. Complete vibes.
U should watch the music video for it 🙏🙏
OLDIE BY ODD FUTURE PLSSSSSS
This song is Tyler talking to his alter ego Wolf Haley. Hints why he sounds like he's talking to somebody
Isn’t it Tron cat and Wolf Haley? hence why he contradicts him self at times
“This is my… alter ego, ANITA MAX WYNN
👍
You almost need to watch the video to understand the last part
That first line fucken blows my mind every time "Im a fucken walking paradox, No I'm not"
In rap we got old school opium mumble rap and we got Kanye
you shouldve watched the music video
I finally did not too long ago. Pretty wild. I need to start doing Tyler video reactions as well. I've watched a couple and they're pretty damn great.
@@bobthepoppop yeah tyler is by far my favorite music artist, behind car seat headrest
are you neurodivergent /srs@@cameron____
That 1 dislike must be a miss click
Marvin Gaye made soul music i guess
The music video was better lol
Listen too Deathcamp by Tyler, the Creator
Yes bro deathcamp is so underrated one if my favourite Tyler songs
You don’t know who Marvin Gaye is…??
Tyler came out as gay a few years ago lol
