    Chance donates 1 million to CPS schools and my far Southside school sees none of that money , instead we come back to school to see half of our classrooms have no teacher employed ,but yet we still in the class doing absolutely nothing. Every time CPS makes a "Budget Cut" it's always the black and brown students that are affected most by those cuts. So is the Chicago Public School system racist? Yes, Yes it is.

    Finally something positive about Chicago other then Chance donating money. Will it change the current climate overnight? No, however it’s a start. Now someone needs to start a place for tech, finances, and any other places where young people can grow. Also don’t forget the older people as well.

    • @Write662

      I’m not knocking Chance at all. I think it’s wonderful what he’s done. He’d stepped up even when politicians didn’t. Usually whenever I hear anything about Chicago, it’s completely negative. The only positive thing I’ve heard about Chicago (prior to this segment) was Chance donating funds. Also there are conversations that are being had that people are not shining a light on the positive things that happen there as well.

    I don't think poetry is the way to go large scale. It's a step in the right direction but we need to come up with better. My idea is we could do what (I think) Sweden did to fix their youth. They provided about $100 bucks to kids to use for after school activities and it helped drastically. You guys should check it out.

    • @merlin3687
      @merlin3687 7 лет назад

      Why’d you want it to succeed, who cares about other peoples kids as long as yours get a good education? Crime rates are only a problem if there’s poor people in your city, push them out and you’ve got nothing to worry about. Regarding economic aspects, there are roughly 7.47 billion people on earth, you don’t need to help poor people to boost your economy, immigration policies that favor highly skilled workers and regulations on companies that require them to provide social insurances is all you need as an incentive for them to migrate. The money the west spends on their human garbage would be better invested somewhere else.

    • @maryhunter6389
      @maryhunter6389 7 лет назад +12

      @Big Pearl - I think the OP means that this is just a bandage, but not a structural solution. You need good public schools that are attended by everyone. Enough money for good education and lots of programs that focus on skills you can use to better your life and find a good job. Poetry can help for individuals, but it won't solve the underlying problem.

    • @Nick30468
      @Nick30468 7 лет назад +48

      your thinking is too narrow. it's not about turning everyone into writers or poets. It's what it does to the person. You put the kids in a group setting with positives influences and goals instead of the alternative and they find themselves drawn to such groups. You have them creating their own work, encouraging creativity and critical thinking. Those are transferable skills.
      It's like math class when you were in highschool. I'm sure you've heard one of those "geniuses" thinking they were so witty when they said "When will I ever use this in life?" ? Well, literally, they may be right, most people will not use higher math skills in their lives. But it prepares your mind for problem solving and analytical thinking. That's how the poetry/writers program helps. It's not literally about churning out writers (although some may find that to be their "thing" too). It's about setting standards they will continue to look for and transferable mental skills they use for the rest of their lives. You cannot take these things so literally.
      If you're still unconvinced, look at your own life. Many of the lessons and skills and such you use on a day to day basis were not taught literally, you learned them via different situations and learned to apply them to where you are right now, where ever that may be. *That's* what a lot of people fail to realize. They think too narrow and take these programs too literally.

    • @lam1012
      @lam1012 7 лет назад +10

      Firstly , sorry for the late reply . I live in South Africa and had to get to bed early . By no means do I suggest that doing drugs and all that BS is better than learning poetry . The problem is that we always have these "feel good" programs that while inspiring are not sustainable and does not to any significant extent even begin to solve the problems that exist within communities like this one . There are larger issues to deal with . "Kids" from these backgrounds stopped being kids a long time ago . They have to deal with stuff most adults don't even have to . You cannot expect a kid to perform at the same level as more privileged kids when they are not sure when they will eat again or when they will have to move again or whether they will even get to school without being mugged or worst . We need to give them more than just ways to express themselves . The problem is too many people think they're never gonna make it anyway so why not teach them how to sing , play sports and write poetry. They are worth so much more , teach them better Maths skills , economics, science and technology, entrepreneurial skills . That's how they will be able to "rewrite" this chapter .

    • @Phlimbob
      @Phlimbob 7 лет назад +9

      Schools always need money. Coming from a family of teachers, when the school doesn't have money, the teachers have to either cough up thousands of dollars every year or the students go without textbooks, library books, recess equipment, gym equipment, good lunches, etc. Depending on the grade, those costs can go up, with teaching equipment. Just having decorations in the classroom (always at the cost of the teacher) enhances a child's readiness to learn and participate. So throwing money at a school does, will, and can improve test scores.

    • @gc6329

      Big Pearl Yea, you need to provide real incentives for going to school, not just abstract sciences and arts that most of these kids will never even think about outside of the classroom let alone use. Including that poetry slam nonsense. Instead, give them hands on skills training. Actual crafts that make a difference in this world, roofing, welding, carpentry, masonry, plumbing, HVAC, the list is endless and these job workers win more bread than most college graduates do because most college graduates get a useless degree, get a job in a unrelated field, and then drown in their debt. There is a huge skills gap in this country because public schools attach a stigma to learning hands on trades and starting your own business. And then liberals want to tax small businesses to death to fund schools pointlessly because "the white kids are leaving." What's funny is that nobody on the left realizes that you help huge corporations when you tax the 1%. The smaller business can't handle the taxes and go under, paving the way for the larger corporations. You only need a 300k annual income to be in the 1%, a huge percent of small business owners fall into this category.
      A lot of these kids go to school, see that what they're learning is not immediately useful, and lose interest. That is painfully obvious and your solution is poetry slams and fancier laptops.
      We teach them to follow their dreams, they realize it's next to impossible to become a football player/rapper/graphic designer because that's what every kid in this country is doing, so they give up and are left with no other ideas because we've given them nothing else.

      Coopa Jay woah man, I'm offering first hand experience with the education system, not some statistics from some article or report. It's not political ideology, it's common sense to someone with my background. I think any teacher who says otherwise is either from a wealthy/corrupt school or a bad teacher. No matter what article you throw at me, I'm going to assume bias because I have clearly seen the difference between a school that receives good funding and a school that receives bad funding. Yes, richer schools generally perform better on tests.
      But if you continue to insist that money is not a solution for test scores, as I know it is not the only one, I hope you think about other solutions and offer them to our government. Happy Thanksgiving.

    wait.. So you have a white guy directing a black program.. hmm! could be, black directors in Chicago are jus not interested in these types of programs, or Chicago does not have, qualified black artistic directors to run these types of programs! Or maybe, he's the best man for the task at hand, he jus so happen to be white( and Jewish). Either which way, these types of programs, albeit, very necessary programs! end up not feeding the plant the right nutrients!
    there's not a black soul, whether in spirit or in life, DIRECTING a Jewish, and or a predominately white community program in the United States of America!

      Or, maybe, as a white person from an affluent family, he just happens to be the one with the means, opportunity, *and* interest in creating a program like this?
      > there's not a black soul, whether in spirit or in life, DIRECTING a Jewish, and or a predominately white community program in the United States of America!
      I mean, probably because black people have been historically disadvantaged in this country and don't usually have the means to run community programs that service a wider area than just their own community, and black people tend to live in predominantly-black communities, so if they're running a small community program then most participants will be black by default? And if they are fortunate enough to have the means to run a large program with high visibility, they typically choose to do so in black communities because the local white communities either don't need them or already have them?
      I'm just saying. There's a reason the power imbalance seems to go a particular way here, and it's because the power imbalance goes that particular way everywhere.

    Talking from a place with different culture then the united states and no bone on the race fight ive to tell why is only black people on the youth program? Arent any white kid that need help in Chicago? I think isnt just fault of white or black, all your culture is differentiated and both sides are to blame.

      I mean this video only showed ONE person and he was black, doesn't mean only black people are in this program. I mean if you saw the stand up there were a few white people. In these areas there are more black people than white. So naturally it seems like there are more black.

      The guy that run it is the Director not one of the kids getring help...but i watch it again and its true on the presentation for the open mic there were other kids and one performer after the lead poet of this short was white so i apologise if i had the wrong impression, althought i still believe part of what i said is true and both parties are to blame in the race war that divide America.
