if you are going to be that ignorant and irresponsible with a gun, you did the right thing in removing them from your house, gun ownership is a large responsibility, its not for everyone
@@markinnes4264 Wrong. most people don't "play" with their guns. They train to be safe and proficient. 2%-3% of gun owners "play" with their guns, and they are easy to recognize. They all have RUclips channels, they all have 4 or more AR-15s and they all have 10,000 rounds of Russian 5.56 in their basement.
I was going to say something similar. So is the fact they show a admitted drug head talking about his poor decision making skills change my mind on guns?

I wrote a remix of Copperhead Road and I'm calling it Crackhead Road. "daddy was whipping the baking soda on that stove. We could smell the crack cooking down the holler that's why they call it Crackhead Road."
But the other side of it is not doing drugs you will never be an Artist who makes art that hundreds of thousands of people enjoy including yourself or you wouldn't be here . The drugs are a part of him and he wouldn't be who is without them . The moral of the story is if you want to do drugs don't do so many you are irresponsible with both your children and your firearms . WITHOUT THE DRUGS WE WOULDN'T HAVE THE ARTIST AND WE WOULDN'T HAVE THE MUSIC .
Booze and tobacco kill way more people than black market pot did before the cannabis freedom movement gained momentum and started passing state laws to allow unlicenced homegrown marijuana for personal use and licensed retail sale of marijuana. In my jurisdiction it's legal to grow up to 12 plants at a time for personal use and last time I counted them there were nine cannabis retailers in my neck of the woods in a town of about 50,000 people. Not sure what they're using for chemical pesticides in the legal cannabis industry these days. I've heard horror stories about dangerous horticulture practices in California's legal medical marijuana gardens when they started opening up medical marijuana retail shops for patients with a doctor's written recommendation. Some of the consumers got seriously ill from smoking food grade fungicide residue on herb treated with food grade fungicides commonly used on the vineyard crops in California's wine industry that are safe to ingest but toxic to smoke because burning it releases cyanide funes. I've grown my own pain medicine for a few years legally because I don't want to get addicted to opiates and I eat it in my food instead of burning it and sucking it into my lungs. Bad drug laws are the root cause of a lot of the problems associated with drug addiction and abuse.

@@td315 It really isn't. Steve was on the verge of death around the time he got busted and he and his family were suffering horribly. I don't think Steve is anti-gun ownership for others, he's a fairly sensible man politically. But he knows himself and he knows that it likely wasn't a good idea for a recovering heroin addict whose son was also an addict to have guns in his home.
@@kuga6566 I’m a recovering heroin and meth user. If a gun fell out of his pants and went off in front of the cops it is hilarious. I’m positive he has laughed at himself over before because every addict has done really stupid stuff and most laugh at themselves. It’s part of the process. Edit: all that suffering that his family and he went through was the result of his actions. He brought it all on himself by using drugs just like I did. You sound like he had no choice and that is wrong, all he had to do was stop using. It’s really really hard but people do it everyday.
My dad would've known where that pistol was in about 30 seconds. Actually it would never have moved. I would have got my ass torn up just for plundering in his room.
Ad one more to the number of idiotic misleading youtube titles. He never once mentioned his "stance" one way or another - all he said was that he no longer keeps a gun in the house. Big difference.
The problem was not the gun, but the gun owner. If the gun had been properly stored, and the child properly educated, there wouldn't have been a problem. I am a retired deputy sheriff, and I made sure to show my firearm to my children, and explain the dangers firearms can pose. Demystifying guns is always a good idea if you keep a gun in the house, and safe storage is mandatory!
It isn't just "the gun owner", it's our culture. That's the issue. We have insane amounts of men brought up completely unsocialized so they have no idea how to communicate, they have been taught not to communicate their emotions or grievances and to "take everything like a man". Couple that up with the idea that all of us are brought up thinking we are magically going to be married when we hit 18... Until we get to 18 when we realize it isn't just a thing that happens to everyone. So then you have millions of men/teenagers who have no clue how to talk to women (that you just treat them like anyone else, that they aren't some alien creature) and they begin to be resentful for not being able to date - they don't know how to *not* be creepy. Pair that with men being taught that being a man requires guns, for some reason the NRA had managed to push this gross type of imagery that "real men shoot guns" and all the political fear that a lot of people have that's also pushed by organizations like the NRA, and suddenly you have all these lonely, resentful men who all think all it takes to be a man is to own a gun, and they're resentful so obviously you're going to get shootings. Half of them are extremely sexist/bigoted and it's because they just assumed they were entitled to marrying someone, as though no one ever thought to reach them that in order to date someone you have to treat them with respect so they *want to be around you* . Idk I'm rambling because I'm short on time, I would be wording this a lot better if wasn't on break at work and I had a solid amount of time to really go through and word this better, but ultimately the issue is still societal, it's just not the fact that there is so much gun ownership that's the issue, many people misdiagnose the problem and think that taking guns out of the equation will solve it - but the real issue is how do you stop people from *wanting* to go and commit mass murderer - guns don't cause that issue. It's more about male culture in America than gun ownership I've always been pro gun and it drives me nuts that no one ever talks about the *we need to stop people from wanting to do this stuff* rather than treat people like babies and disarm the public.
But it wasn’t ..stored that is. Not everyone is as responsible and as capable of due dilligence as you on account of them just being human beings. The problem IS the gun
My story is very much like Steve's. My oldest son moved in with me, he and one of his friends took 2 of my guns. He denied taking them. This is where my story is different from Steve's. After my son received a good old fashion ass whipping, the guns were inside my house when I returned from work the next day. I then bought a gun safe that was large enough to hold all of my guns. I began teaching my son gun safety and taking him hunting. This happened 32 years ago. He now has his own son, who is in high school. As I'm approaching my 68th birthday, the 3 of us hunt together. My son will tell you to this day, he still remembers that ass whipping. By the way Steve, I still like your music.
Each man t his own< is that the correct saying? Agree with you 100% , Also with the part of Steve sending the kid to a camp. NOT with the part of giving up guns though. Totally agree with you on te the Safe part. Teach the kids and hunt together.
Never had a gun safe and my guns are still safe because my children know beforehand what happens if they do wrong. Good luck getting your gun out of a safe in time to defend yourself from a robber!
My dad taught me to shoot at age 9. Before that, he taught me that I have a duty to remain honorable while possessing a firearm, loaded or unloaded. I would be ashamed and embarrassed to steal, lose, or improperly use a firearm, or any weapon for that matter. Here's one thing that really helped: A burning, unrelenting hatred for the bad guys, particularly Nazis (They're not all dead yet). If I know one thing, it's that those bastards are too evil for me to point my weapon at anything else, no matter how hopeless, drunk, or sexually frustrated I get. Speaking of, I never saw my weapon as a penis extension. I was very small when I saw the animated Pocahontas movie. The scene with the first firefight between the English and the Human Beings (That's the closest translation of their name for themselves) the Governor chastises Thomas for his sub-par performance in the fight. He says, "And YOU. Learn to use that thing properly. A man's not a man unless he knows how to shoot." I knew right away that was a red flag. If you hear anyone talk like that, don't listen when they give you relationship or financial advice. They have no idea how small they are in the world. EDIT: That reminds me. Ladies, unless guns are mutual interest, run the other way when your date starts showing off his guns (especially if they be Kel-Tech🤣 ). Not that he's likely to shoot you, but because he thinks an implement of death, for use only in the gravest extreme, makes up for charm. Probly gonna be boring in bed and annoying out of bed, at best.
I hope he really is clean and not just talking the talk. It's amazing to me how one of my favorite artist can sound so detached from his own family situation as he sounds in that interview. Obviously still showing some of the dissociative effects of hardcore drug use.
I think he knows he was at fault. I got "It's not a good idea for me, a recovering drug addict with kids, to have a gun in my house" rather than "I think no one should have a gun" from this.
Olay sure I agree that maybe his gun shouldn't have been loaded because his children were home with him but I dissagree with him ,because you can't allow your kids to dominate your decisions children need a mother and father to guide them and teach them about life. And guns don't kill , people kill it is very necessary to own guns for both hunting purposes and for defending your self and the ones that you love ,,your family .period !
Just because you are famous does not mean you have common sense...If IF he would have had the pistol in a secured handgun safe or a regular safe..His kid would have never of had access to that pistol. PLAIN AND SIMPLE.
But if a gun is in a safe what good is it to protect yourself from an intruder, if someone breaks in when you are asleep or in the shower you would have to say to the burglar...'hang on a minute just let me get my gun out of the safe' I live in England so i admit the gun culture isnt something i really understand because most of us here dont have guns in our home, although we do have a problem with knife crime here in London, im not saying we dont have social problems, we do
(eye roll) People trying extremely hard, as you are, to distract from another even more obvious truth tend to yell the same thing in caps everywhere the word "gun" is mentioned on the internet. It's especially tedious when the pro-guns-for-all-because-Gawd types do their allegedly plain and simple "answer" with such obvious neglect of listening to anything in the video they're yelling about. See, Steve Earle isn't pretending to have been a responsible guy. During that era, as you would perhaps have heard if you could listen, his kids were COLLECTING UP CRACK PIPES hoping Daddy would stop getting high if they threw away all the drug-using-crap. Of course it is true "everybody oughtta keep guns locked up", like it's true that "folks oughtta be good people". But yelling about total wasted lunatic geniuses (like Steve Earle) with loaded guns lying around while they huff crack being irresponsible is like exclaiming that the ocean is mighty liquid. The important point where gun policy is concerned is not "ooh peeps oughtta use commin sense" but rather than someone as completely off the rails as Earle was, before he got sober in prison, was able to GET those guns to be irresponsible with. Sane countries choosing to allow, or even require, firearms ownership also make licensing mandatory and difficult-- you have to prove you're responsible enough to be trusted with a gun, not throw tantrums about how "gunowners are responsible!" and demand that we all just take their word for it. Anyone who doesn't grasp that people often fail to be (and can claim falsely to be) responsible and trustworthy, and therefore it may be necessary to prove oneself to be so when the difference between the true and false claim actually matters, is probably too insane and/or stupid and/or evil to be trusted to lock up their guns and not (for instance) leave them lying about, loaded, while also getting loaded despite your children's efforts to stop you. People who throw a fit about having to jump through hoops to get licensed to own dangerous weapons are, in my experience, actually those who are themselves extremely irresponsible and know they would not be able to qualify to own guns in any state whose laws are structured to prevent gun "accidents" (so called) rather than to prevent at all costs any murderous idiot's being unable to buy any gun he can afford (which seems to be what our laws value most-- MOAR gunz.) If you aren't intelligent enough to understand why licensing is necessary, or responsible enough to understand the importance of proving oneself to be responsible, or serious and patient enough to maintain licensing that is deliberately made enough of a hurdle to weed out the lazy and easily distracted... well, your having a gun will most probably be more of a hardship for those you hurt or kill with your "accidents" than your not having one to play with will be a hardship to you. Every serious devotee of gun ownership and gun safety and responsibility I have ever met agrees that there are no no-fault no-foul "accidents" with guns; there is only neglect of proper care and attention, resulting in entirely foreseeable bad outcomes. The ignorant and the morally slipshod consistently excuse their culpable neglect of proper care, and pretend the harm and death they cause aren't really their fault because they didn't 'mean to' do it! But intention alone cannot delimit responsibility for bad outcomes in contexts such as gun ownership and the moral requirement for control over the risks inherent in lethal weaponry; it's not enough not to intend for your child to shoot the neighbor's kid. Nor is it enough to intend to maintain rigorous control over your guns; you must actually do it, over time, all the time, without lapse or screwup or immoderate outbursts of bad temper, and insure that your kid does not (because cannot) grab your gun from your purse and blow away another kid. Strict liability laws would make everything done with a particular gun the fault, legally speaking, of the registered owner. No squirrelly BS excuses like "well, that other guy actually shot someone, with the gun he swiped from under my car seat; I didn't do anything wrong with my gun, he did, and my leaving it under my seat was fine because it WOULD have been fine... if only that other guy hadn't found it, and used it to hold up a liquor store." In other words, the whine of "none of this is on me, I'm a good responsible gun owner! It was an accident, that someone ended up bleeding out on the liquor store floor with three slugs from my gun in his chest!" Accident.... it just "happened". That line of excuse particularly appalls Jim Wright, the retired chief warrant officer who spent a good deal of his military time devising the training protocols governing the qualifications of gun safety instructors-- he's the guy who decided what you had to prove you knew in order to be adjudged capable of teaching others how to handle firearms responsibly. His series on essays on American gun violence, Bang Bang Crazy, can be found at his site Stonekettle Station; they are excellent. The habit of avoiding sanity and facts when arguing gun policy is disturbing-- only two days ago, the Austin public radio station broadcast various callers' comments on the increasing frequency of gun massacres, and one rather terrifying idiot opined only that "guns had nothing to do with it" and since gun control could not change the evil hearts of men, our only recourse was praying to God to change men's evil hearts to stop their committing gun rampages. Apparently, the difference in murderous capacity between an evil man with a high-capacity rifle and an evil-intending man with a Bowie knife does not seem important to people whose priorities are making sure they themselves can always buy more guns, no matter how violent, irresponsible, and fanatical they may be.
Anthony E. Idealistic Woodworks and if you take the guns away people will kill each other with knifes and if they take knives away we will go back to smashing heads with rocks it’s in our nature but at least give me a way to protect myself because if the bad guys have guns I want guns too
This guy has built his career on pseudo-intellectual claims of political superiority though. He’s famous primarily because a lot of people think he’s right. Same with James McMurtry and countless other Americana artists.
Let 's face it---Steve Earle was not an RESPONIABLE parent. The gun and THE DRUGS drug prove it. Guns don't kill people ----it's the IGNORANCE of people that kill people.

D Patrick It seems reasonable NOT to use crack---unfortunately some humans are more self-serving and self centered---they seem to think the world revolves more around their desires than their family responbilities.
As much as I believe that Steve Earle is one of the greatest songwriters of all time, I rarely agree with any of his political views and that's fine I still love his music. But if you have kids in your home, your firearms need to remain locked up and secure. It's irresponsible to do otherwise. As a resident of Nashville and former musician. I've heard many stories of Mr. Earle doing some pretty stupid shit while in possession of a firearm. Whether or not they are true, I don't know but if so, maybe it's better off that he doesn't have one.

The thing about guns is that you got to demystify them in the eyes of children. If you own guns and hide it from your children you're only encouraging their curiosity. You need to take your child out in shooting ranges and let them under very close supervision handle and fire the guns. It needs to be ingrained in them how deadly and serious guns are and that guns are not play things. The children need to fear and respect firearms and this can be thought. Look at ancient cultures with bows and arrows. Children didn't shoot each other with arrows because they where playing a stupid game. The understood that the bow and arrow was not a plaything but a means to an end to procure meat or for self defense. This same attitude will exist today if we teach our children properly.
Well stated. And thank you. At the age of 3 or 4 (not sure of which, as it was awhile back) I had my own BB gun; about then I was allowed to ride in the p/u my dad drove as cousins rode in the back, during family gatherings, as they hunted for rabbit and varmints. By 6 I was riding in the back of the p/u. 6-pellet gun: it & the bb gun, both, I was allowed to carry while alone, as long as my parents ok'd it. By 7 I was allowed to have them out when a friend was over-only 1 friend, not when multiple friends were over. 8-.22long semi-automatic rifle: could hunt w/when in the presence of someone older-14yr old or older; the same was the case w/a family owned 4-10 shotgun; 10yr old-12ga shotgun & alone or w/someone older; 13yo-30-30 my favorite --a Win. Mod 94 carbine. At 13 coyote & rabbit hunting, w/a friend or 2, was almost a nightly event. At the very least it was a Fri or Sat night outing. We understood guns, the dangers involved, and knew and accepted the responsibilities involved. We weren't old enough to go to "town" and run around. After all, there was drinking, and dancing, fornication, and all sorts of other evils going on in town. Plus we didn't have a driver's license. The license was an issue in town. Once out of town, though, you were seldom bothered. So we could hit the dirt roads and w/in 5-10 miles be hunting in any one of numerous fields or pastures. Often there were livestock present. We never killed or even injured one. We knew where to not point our guns and where was safe. If we didn't know if it was safe to point in a direction, we didn't point them that way. There were no "I didn't know" or "I thought it would be ok." Only to find out after the fact it wasn't ok. We just did not tolerate such. The reason all of this worked, no one got hurt, no livestock were injured, and the same reason my children did, and are doing the same: simple. Just as you said, the knowledge of guns/the dangers involved/the requirement to keep one's mind on safety, all were ingrained into us. Having guns is just as much a way of life as a television set is to most American families, or an automobile, or even a cell phone. I can't imagine growing up w/out a gun. Besides all the enjoyment of owning them, learning about them, shooting them, and admiring the craftsmanship that goes into making them, just look at all the trouble they have kept so many teens out of. If I hadn't been out hunting, I'd likely been sneaking out of the house, into town (only a mile away), and getting into no telling what all. No good for one. Sorry so winded but people really need to understand that all the hype they hear about guns being so bad is a bunch of ....well....shall we say what would be exiting the south end of a north bound bull! Guns are not bad. Alone they are not dangerous. In the wrong hands they are deadly. So is a knife, the mentioned arrow, a vehicle, even the office of the President. That's why your point is so important. Who gives access, of their vehicle, to their kids, prior to them gaining the knowledge required to safely have access? Guns should be, no must be, no different. The importance of safely handling, as well as handling oneself while around others that are carrying guns, must be instilled into children so that many of the needless incidents that happen-- don't happen. Thanks again for a well constructed comment.
Ges x I appreciate your response and how it's a classic example of a positive gun culture that we can have here in America. The people who are antigun are very ignorant of guns what they learn about guns is what they see on tv and the news.. all bad. Also many antigun people live in large democrat controlled cities where they essentially ban guns which only promotes more ignorance and fear of guns. It's an artificial way of living, humans where meant to live in communities where people know each other and each individual is a free sovereign person responsible for themselves and there self defense.
Wow! Surely it's a better approach to not have guns at all; to spend your entire life not coming into contact with them, seeing them, touching them. Fairground air rifles aside, the only guns I have ever seen in my life were in the USA, in the holsters of cops and in the open back of a pickup somewhere in Texas. I am reading talk about "positive gun culture" and that people who are anti gun only learn bad things about them. Tell me, what is good about guns? Really, I want to know.
neilprocter In a nutshell: they're fun. That may sound an immature answer, but that's what a bunch of it boils down to. Guns are fun. They're fun to shoot, fun to see who, while using guns, can shoot the fastest, most accurate, farthest, and while in different positions. Guns, well some guns, are beautiful pieces of exquisite, painstaking workmanship. As such the work that went into them is admired, while the beauty is too. It is also enjoyable or [fun] to look at and handle such fine craftsmanship. There is also the investment or monetary value of them. Most everyone, that is able to do so, lays up for themselves in various ways. Some with a 401k; some invest in the stock market; some precious metals; others real estate; etc, etc. Many invest in multiple investments. Some of those investments are guns, for some people. Those that are able to invest in futures often choose those investments, besides on the projected future value and risks, by the interest they hold on the investor. As such many find investing in guns as not only a lucrative attraction, but as an enjoyable [fun] or vested interest. There is also the case of hunting. Granted, as is with all the situations above, there are other methods that could be used, but why do so? I, as well as a few million others, enjoy hunting for various reasons. Some for the sport of it (a contradictory of terms imo), some for food, some for predator control, and others for a combination of the listed. All can be, and usually are, enjoyable or fun. Of the argument, attempted by some, that there be other means to hunt, and other products to invest in, they are correct. If they actually think, though, that, because there be other things available that suite their empty knowledge based ideas; then perhaps they should walk to school and work instead of taking a vehicle. Maybe they should cut, gather, haul, split, stack, and carry in an arm load at a time, wood. Then use it to heat and cook with, rather than electricity or natural gas, or fuel oil. Or better yet, maybe they should refrain from television, radios, books, and social media and functions, and instead study the Bible only. After all cars do kill people; modern conveniences make people lazy, which leads to an unhealthy lifestyle, which in turn causes unnecessary expenses due to health issues; and television and radio broadcasts, many books, video games, and even discussions occurring through social media causes tempers to rise, and in turn provoke violent acts. ..... ..... Wait a minute!....No, they most certainly do not!!!!.... I've never known of a vehicle to kill anyone, nor of conveniences causing health problems, or of books, television, or social media causing any violence. No, like injuries and death related incidents, where guns were involved, it isn't the gun or those other objects that caused or inflicted the harm done. Rather it was: the driver controlling that vehicle, the one lacking the gumption and care to work and stay healthy but instead chose to be lazy and unhealthy, the one having anger issues or lacking the self-discipline or concern for others and went ballistic, or the one for whatever messed up idiotic reason either had no respect for gun safety or fell off the deep end and chose to harm or kill others and do so with the aid of a gun. None of those objects or conditions were the cause of anything. Some human was the cause of each. That's just as true with the gun. Guns do not harm or kill anyone, alone or assisted by someone...well, for the most part. I suppose there are instances where someone beats someone to death with a gun. Other than that though, they don't. The injury or killing is done when the bullet cuts into vital areas, causing damage or death. The lack of oxygen, blood, or commands from the brain, are what cause death. This may have come about through the introduction of a bullet. Yes, that bullet came from a gun, but not before it was ejected from a shell or case. And true, that gun housed the cartridge, and it's firing pin hit the primer that caused the powder to ignite; the trigger even released the firing pin so that it could hit the primer. Here's where the concept of it being the gun that kills stops. Triggers do not pull themselves. They don't release the firing pin, unless they break. Though one breaking and causing a gun to fire could of happened, I've never witnessed such or even heard of. Therefore it can't be the gun that kills. Something has to engage the trigger. That would be a human. Period! Plain and simple! There has never been a violent, or protective, or self willed gun documented. At least none I've ever heard of. I have guns that are loaded and chambered, and with only a 1/8" thick sheet of glass between them and everything else. Some have been this way for years. During that time there have been 1,000s of times people have walked within touching distance of them. There have been close to as many driving by, all well within range of the various ammunition of the different guns. Out of all that time and encounters, not one single time have any of those guns, so much as bobbled, bowed up, took sight of, or pulled off a warning shot, much less actually shot or killed anyone...imagine, not one so much as threatened to even scare anyone. To hear many, though, you could almost swear that, at least once, one of those guns would have attempted to harm someone. Guns do kill, don't they? Hmmmm...mine sure haven't, nor have they tried to. Aside from fun (aside from those that be distasteful amongst us and would use a gun to harm or kill under the surmise of protection.), many prefer to have them for protection. Protection from various enemies, whether invasion from foreign forces to an attempted takeover by our own corrupt government, and from would be thieves and rapists to wild animals. I personally have no intention of causing harm to anyone, because God has told us not to. I do, however, occasionally have the need to protect myself, and those around me from wild animals. As such, I have a gun close by most times. (More on the distasteful: are those that use the idea of protection to mask the truth. That truth being they really want, enjoy, and hope to harm or kill those they consider enemies. They're not included in the scenarios above, but are in a class of their own. They really shouldn't have guns, but it's not my right to make a law preventing them from having guns.) Besides those things listed as fun or enjoyable; planning for the future; and protection; there are many others. There are also other good reasons for owning guns. I assumed that you were asking what concepts or ideas are there, that are good, that guns are in relation to, rather than actually what is good about guns. If not, then the answer would have to be nothing. There's nothing bad about them either. Just like any other inanimate object, there's nothing good or bad about them. The good or bad is in the one controlling whatever it may be-car, knife, glass picture, vial of poison, a cutting torch, or a gun.

Im not big on guns or anything but if someone broke in how long would it take to run to the safe and get your gun as opposed to it just being under your bed?
Daniel Verberne Well, I keep one on me at all times, and a handful in a quick-release safe. I can have the one on my person drawn in under a second, and I can be in the safe- with hands on a weapon- in under three seconds. So in short, I’d say “pretty useful”
Chicago has the strictest gun laws in the US. Or should I say the strictest anti gun laws. But still they have the highest murder rate. What does that tell you??
Handsome Timmy Please explain how the anti-gun laws correlate to the crime rate. Your example proves nothing. It's a snapshot in time. I'd really love to know more about the cause and effect you imply Per Merriam Webster. Gangs are going to get guns regardless of laws. I went to Chicago a few years ago and it was the friendliest city I've been to. It was gorgeous to walk around and the people were the nicest strangers I've ever met. I felt safer walking downtown Chicago than I did downtown Calgary, Detroit, Toronto, and Cleveland. Gun laws work when you're a law abiding citizen.
I was about 10yo when I shot a gun for the first time. It was my dads Springfield model 67 pump action 12ga. And I got my first gun when I was 13. It was a Ruger 10/22. I never touched It when I was home alone unless some one tried to brake In. First thing you need Is a gun safe rather you've got kids or not. Second thing Is to teach your kids on gun safety. And last thing Is to go out to the range a few times or go hunting to allow them to understand the firearm. There's a lot of responsible gun owners. But there Is that "5% or so" that just don't give a fuck and give us responsible gun owners a bad name. And apparently Steve Earle Is one of them. He must not have any common sense..
well, he didnt say he changed his stance on guns as the title says. He just said he personally never had a gun in the house again....which is probabily bullshit.
@@whoreshoe gun nazis hear what they want to hear. If it's not gunz r awesome they put their fingers in their ears and go la, la, la, la la I can't hear you la, la, la, la, la, la.
Why are people so thin skinned about guns? Guns are just guns. Now when they get in the hands of stupid asses that's a different story. Like the Tiger Kings boyfriend or husband. Now fools like that are bad for guns. You figure if you have a respect for your gun rights you would respect your guns.
8x56 Amen,If you hide something from a kid his curiosity will get the best of him.My kids all start hunting and shooting by the time they can stand, By the time they are Five and that has been pretty consistent with all three,They couldn't care less about shooting a gun and hell yea the first time they see what a gun does to a bird or a bunny they will never aim it at a human being unless it is for self defense.when my now 19 year old was 11, his friend showed him a gun he had found at an uncles house and stole it, my boy took it and brought it to me,Found out that the only reason that kid hadn't shot him self or someone else was he didn't know how to take off the safety,The parents still thank my son for saving their kid.Educate Educate Educate,Don't hide.
I totally agree. But also you don't hide crack pipes either. You don't hide drugs and make them a big mystery, it only increases the curiosity factor. Please note that to people in other countries your gun laws are as shocking as handing a child a crack pipe. But each to their own.
Where I live we have a culture of outdoor activities that include hunting and fishing. Children and women are included in these activities. A child who learns at an early age just what a gun is about and what it can do is a safer individual over somebody who has never handled a gun until they sign up for military service.
Regardless of whatever your stance is on the gun control issues or whatever arguments you might want to present, Steve Earl changed his opinion on the issue based on having chosen a shitty spot to hide his weapon, and not teaching his kids to respect fire arms.
Am a veteran, fought and did my 💀 and became hooked on stuff's that no should be,is on a way to be free from the shit and so should everybody else do but it's not easy,so i have great respect for Steve Earl and damn he can sing 🙂👏👏👏👍👍👍
If he had taken his son out and taught him about guns in the proper context instead of trying to hide it from him, things could have turned out differently. And he would still have some form of protection available.
he's simply being an honest guy... if we could all admit to being flawed parents and people maybe we'd write songs like he does... as far as the gun control issue, i think this is one of the most relevant and touching stories i've heard. thank god it didn't end in tragedy. i too have an autistic child and agree with everything he said on the subject.
He didn’t say anything about gun control. He said he was an irresponsible parent who couldn’t control his children and as such, removed his fire arm from the home.
Touching? He is shockingly careless. You dont leave a loaded gun available to anybody period. Or an unloaded one for that matter. I dont leave a Skilsaw plugged in in the shop. I dont leave sharp kitchen knives sitting on the edge of the counter. I put all tools away safely as I can.
Not only was he so careless as to leave a loaded gun under his bed, seemingly rarely check on it or keep track of it, the only viable response he had was to send his kid off somewhere else. I trust everybody in my house. When I have a gun out of a safe, I am within 5 feet of it keeping track of it 100% of the time. What good is a loaded gun under the bed if there's a robber if you're not under the bed yourself? He doesn't say anything about gun control, but he does specifically say his "stance" has changed from... nobody knows to nobody knows.
@@timmorrison4117 not all gun owners in this country are as responsible as you, very irresponsible people can get legal firearms pretty easily and that’s a major argument for gun control, basic stuff like back ground checks and all
Not to mention that he was an addict plus he owned a gun. The police would have thrown him under the prison for that. If you’re going to own a gun for protection, ya just can’t keep it in a big safe. You need quick access to that firearm. They make small table top safes for just such occasions.
It sounds like all he's saying is that he made a decision about his particular circumstances, and particular kids at a particular age... ....and it sounds like a good decision--for his circumstances.
My son was diagnosed with autism when he was 8 years old. He is 36 now and lives a normal life. There is hope as long as you have good parents. If you have parents that smoke crack then that’s another story.
"They threw that stuff (his pipes etc) out, thinking I couldn't get high anymore. Only kids can think that way." Actually Steve, that's most liberals way of thinking too. You see Steve, they think that if you ban guns that no one will ever be able to get one again. I'll remind you that crack and other such drugs are also banned/ illegal. How is it that people still get a hold of these drugs when they are illegal?
The big difference between guns and drugs is that it's infinitely more difficult to kill someone with your drugs vs. a firearm. Drugs only directly affect the user, guns have the potential to kill others in addition to yourself. Unfortunately, society moves as fast as its weakest link. Just because you are responsible doesn't mean other people are. That's the price we pay for society. We give some of our freedom to guarantee the safety of the rest of it. I don't think the balance is good in the U.S as it stands, especially with other issues like surveillance, but the concept in itself isn't one that is radical and works very well (Like in my country of Canada, which isn't really that different in a lot of ways from the United States). Hope you had a good day
@Branson Mifsud Infinitely more difficult? Did you fail statistics? Second-hand smoke kills 3 times as many people as murder from firearms. Drunk driving killed 10,000 people last year which is 2/3 the rate of gun murders last year. Drugs kill more people than just the user. If you can't see, you're short-sighted or willfully ignorant.
Perhaps I should more clearly define what I mean by drugs. First, I am mainly referring to the substances Steve was afflicted with, excluding alcohol. such as Cocaine, Heroin etc. 2nd. The point isn't that drugs DO NOT affect others, it's just in regards to the substances that Steve is talking about (excluding alcohol), they tend to be more self-destructive. 3. www.bbc.com/news/world-us-canada-34996604. Perhaps you can elaborate on your point regarding Drunk driving? You've just admitted that guns still kill more people than drunk driving, which from what I have gathered seems to prove my original point more. I may be mis-understanding you Look, I mean we can go back and forth about this for awhile but I think the main issue that people get upset about is that Steve is pro-gun, and people think that he's a libtard. I'm also going to assume people reading this think I am a libtard, so let me break that illusion. Universal background checks are approved by most Americans. I don't think prohibition will work, I think the culture around guns needs to change. The Swiss have mandatory military service that makes people appreciate the fact that firearms were conceived to kill things and that they should be respected as tools, not toys. Yeah it's sucks for responsible gun owners, but society moves at the pace of its slowest member. My big point is don't get angry at guys like this, instead try and direct that effort towards coming up with unique solutions. Happy holidays!
My point about drunk driving is that 2/3 is much more comparative to the same than "infinitely more difficult to kill someone" as you asserted initially. Steve is also not pro-gun at all. You may want to look at the definition of pro-gun as you seem to be confused. And society does not move at the pace of its slowest member - if it did, none of us would be allowed to use a car or own hammers. Driving a car is one of the most dangerous tasks we do each day, yet we are trusted with very limited supervision and modest licensing that the vast majority qualifies for. Blunt objects like hammers killed more people than rifles which many liberals are trying to ban. Where are the calls to ban hammers? Knives killed about 1/5 as many people as firearms, but there are almost no regulations on them in most states and you can carry them almost anywhere.
first, thank you Steve Earl for the music. Second, thanks for the new phrase I'll say every time I go on an outdoor adventure that goes bad for weather or some other reason - "That was bad enough to make me tell Dad where I hid the gun."
When was the last time someone asked YOU to come on their show and share your experiences? This man is far from an idiot. Unlike most folks who rant on here. Lighten up and have some respect for somebody who dedicated most of his life to his art.
He dedicated most of his life to drugs. He is a moron because drugs fried his brain and he lost the ability to reason. Guns are not dangerous, he is dangerous with guns. Yeah, he wised up and got rid of his guns, but if he tries to tell me to get rid of mine just because HE is irresponsible, I'll tell him to kiss my ass.
As a father of two how the fuck can you have kids in your house with loaded guns and crack? Jesus we stressed out over the freakin door locks on the kitchen cabinets. Loaded guns hanging around? Crack? Sorry that's totally beyond my ability to understand. Respect -> gone.
So his stance on owning a gun changed when he couldn't find a secure, 14-year-old proof place to keep his firearm? I don't know what exactly he's trying to say other than he's too stupid to own a gun...
he's saying that he had a scare where his kid got access to his gun and this was one of the reasons he changed his mind about guns. kids kill themselves and others, sometimes accidentally. all the time.
Hola Senor Not if you secure your gun. For that matter, if you teach children to respect the danger of a gun and responsibility that comes with owning it, as I was, it reduced that likelihood.
damn, thats a good hiding spot. i appreciate that steve earle isn't a liar and tells the truth about dad guilt and parenting. its not pretty but its real. I'd rather watch him than all the hypocrits
Summary: "Hi, I am totally irresponsible with guns, so I got rid of them and, since it is impossible for anyone to be more responsible than me, they should also be forced to disarm or face a prison term/death." Please move to Canada. Kthxbye
If he's in favour of banning guns, I wonder if the thought ever occurred to him that the crack he was on at the time was also banned, and yet somehow he managed to find an inexhaustible supply of the stuff. I don't know what his stance on drugs is now, but I've noticed that people who are in favour of prohibition of guns are usually the same people who are against prohibition of drugs because "prohibition doesn't work". I think they need to do a little more thinking. LOL.
PutItAway101 Amen I love Steve but because he makes music doesn't make him *smart* - those of us that grew up when and where he did know is full back story. Steve's got a damn good soul but no one would include the word smart when talking about him except to preface it with "He's not that _ _ _ _ _."

Wow a lot of hate for a man that changed his life around for the better. I myself have been sober for over 20 years and wish one day I could meet Mr. Steve Earle and shake his hand and say to him good work and good job on getting clean, also wishing we might get to sit down and share ideas on music and life in general.
So he changed his stance after behaving irresponsibly with a firearm. Yes if you can't be a responsible adult don't have a gun! The rest of us capable of being responsible will keep our guns. It's always about the kids, but I blame the adults for not being intelligent enough for handling a deadly weapon. I've enjoyed the man's music, but like so many performers I don't care about his opinions.
This is the only logical response to this video. Steve is not being a man, and taking responsibility for his actions. Trying to blame a gun for his mistakes is a cowards way out. . His logic is like trying to blame cars, for drunk drivers killing people. Thank you for a well thought out response.

Your simplifying things in attempt to try and prove you're right. Nice try though, but millions of safe gun owners are doing fine. Sorry the kid didn't die that always pleases people like you.
I'm sorry dude, but I'm a lifelong gun owner, and gotta say that the majority of gun owners are fucking idiots (vividly remember waking up one morning at a friend's house when I was 15 looking down the barrel of a loaded 350 ultra sitting on the counter next to the couch I was sleeping in). You think it's on the dumbass to govern themselves into knowing that they're a dumbass who can't treat a gun properly? Such a stupid premise. Tell me a solution, because like I said I've been a gun owner my whole life and fucking love guns, but am at a loss on this one. Brush it off and let ISIS pledging assholes to blast up a Christmas party? Say, no problem, then let some kid take his head off because his dad was an idiot and left a loaded gun on the counter? C'mon man. I think it gets to the point where you gotta stop being a selfish piece of shit and realize that a little bit of fun you get from your guns isn't worth the price. And don't give me that bullshit about how we need to be able to defend ourselves from our government; they have motherfucking tanks and drones and AA12s loaded with grenades, you think your little pea shooter is gonna stand the slightest chance? You wanna defend yourself from the government? Pick up a fucking book.
Autism is 1 in 50 at this point because they keep expanding the definition of what's considered autism. It's a much bigger "spectrum" now, so more people are on it. When we were kids autism meant someone who was literally "special needs" and had to have a personal aid with them all day. There were only a few of those kids in the school. Now the definition has expanded to include that weird kid who was fine in class without a helper, he just wore sweatpants everyday and was still interested in lame stuff way past when the other kids had moved on. There was one of those kids in every class. As soon as they changed the definition the number of autistic kids seemed to multiply dramatically, so suddenly it's an "epidemic." If they expand the definition of asthma to include everyone who has a cold, it doesn't really mean asthma is spreading.
He was arrested in 1993 for heroin possession and illegal firearms possession. He was sentenced to prison in 94; Justin was born in Jan. 82. He would have turned 14 in 96 when Steve had done his time, so he had possession of the gun as a convicted felon. A violation of parole and another felony. Great example for his kids about obeying the law.
Because he never taught his kids about proper safety and storage of firearms; this means guns are bad and we need more non sensical asinine gun laws....
I think Steve Earle is a fine example of what man can be. A man can dig a god damned giant hole. He can throw himself into that hole and wallow in the filth. But, Steve Earle has shown us that redemption is not as far away as we think it is. Steve Earle has shown us how to take misery and turn it into something good, kind, and generous. His talent and intellect has surely done a great deal of good for people who are struggling. Steve's caring has done even more.
okay I recognize I'm leaving this reply 6 years after the fact... but this just cracks me up to no end. I can't tell you the number of times I've been around a vast array of youtube spots the last couple years where someone featured in the video openly advocates some sort of right wing idealogy, talk for the first time publicly about how they vote republican or whatever, a commenter perhaps more left wing remarks on how they'll now probably have a reevaluation of watching this person, or say 'no thanks' if it's someone that was brand new to them. Then without fail, a slew of clearly conservative based user accounts swoop in with the "here we go yet another typical liberal snowflake, just can't handle and starts freaking out when god forbid someone has a different opinion with them about something, so they'll run off to their safe space and never watch this performer again because the person had the gall to think for themselves about something". thus I'm scrolling skimming down this whole page and seeing user after user who clearly had long been into this guy's music, hearing him express an opposing opinion (especially when he's not even at all saying what all these people are bitching that he said), and announcing they were officially done with Mr. Earle. Hilarious.
@@kevinw712 thanks. You said what I wanted to but my fingers are tired too tired from my shorter and numerous comments. Its nice when reading all the bs comments here to find someone who agrees w me. Bunch o gun lovin steve earle haters and im bettin trump supporters
He lost me when he said autism was an epidemic. Then he just made me mad when he started blaming his kid for his lousy parenting. I know it's tough when you don't understand your kid, but make an effort goddammit.
He has a point, I'm no scientist, but there has to be a contributing factor to the mutation of genes. Autism is spread out over the entire world, if it was genetic, how come 1 in 50 children get it? My genes, yes they are similar to someone in Istanbul because we are Homo sapiens, they a very, very different on an atomic level. Seems a tad bit far fetched for it to be solely genetic, maybe the shit they put in our food, pollution, something strange.
***** well, an epidemic tends to be associated with an infectious disease. when people use it in the context he did they are generally trying to evoke an emotional response. yes it's true autism appears to be on the rise, but it is kinda hard to tell. they really didn't even diagnose people as autistic til about the 1930's, less than 100 years ago. kinda makes it hard to trend people suffering from autism with less than 100 years of trending data. data pertaining to an increase in diagnosing children with autism is solid though (a roughly 30% increase since the 1980's), but usually doesn't take into account that our society has heavily expanded what is considered to be someone suffering from autism and has also gotten much better at diagnosing it. It is very possible the ratio of people we would diagnose as autistic today has been constant for hundreds or thousands of years. if you go back to the early 1900's someone we'd consider to be autistic would probably just be considered 'weird' or eccentric back then, now they'd be diagnosed as autistic.
My Godson has Autism, and I can tell you it's NOT about parenting. It's something you cannot understand unless you're around a child battling that on a daily basis. I'm not attacking you, just saying.
I let my kids see my guns. I let the shoot them (under very careful circumstance, safety is #1 and their first few times I keep MY hands on that thing!!) and I eliminate that mystery of them. To them, it's no big deal. Now... My kids aren't disabled. If one was, I wouldn't keep my handgun close by, I'd lock it up. As it is, if they go into my room during the day it's on my person. I don't leave it where they can get to it. I think that children make rash decisions and don't understand consequences, so if I don't have them on my person, they're locked up. Except my handgun, it's on my nightstand when I sleep. I figure if I kept them a secret from them, they'd dig into it because kids are always in the mood for a mystery. They like to figure things out. Take the mystery out of firearms and they'll respect them. Teach them how to handle them safely, teach them how to unload it and make it safe first and foremost. Then teach them how to shoot. I was raised with firearms and have never even considered committing a crime with them. Teach kids the right way and we'll forever have responsible gun owners instead of mindless thugs.
His son died recently from drugs. Just goes to show that parents are on a learning curve. Be careful what you pontificate on. It will come back to haunt you.
Steve is not entirely honest with himself about the autism issue. There are a lot of theories out there, but the most reliable recent studies have shown that the highest risk factor is age of the parents. I have never heard him acknowledge that is even a possible factor, though I can't imagine that he doesn't know about those studies. I feel for them, though, and know it has probably been very difficult, especially on Allison. I miss them on stage together.
Steve , I love you but your inability to safely secure your firearm is not my fault and my rights should not suffer as a result. My guns are safe and secure.
+Enrico Palazzo No one in the US is taking away any guns. Politicians don't touch the subject considering the US has started more wars (or military actions if you will) than anybody else the last 60 years. Counties such as the US doesn't disarm its citizens. Besides, doesn't a massive portion of its population hunt deer, pheasants, quail, and the like? Can't disarm those people, so no one in the US is being disarmed any time soon. Cheers
Is that the best you can come up with? "Retarded Liberal??? Sorry Jack, I'm a Libertarian if anything, but stupid name calling makes you look like an idiot.
Love ya to death steve and I know I am far from being perfect but it seems to me that if I'm the parent and I leave my guns lying around loaded where they can access them I should be the one who has to go to the wilderness camp. Especially if I hadn't taken the time to educate them on firearms and firearms safety and responsibility. This is usually a result of a person who owns guns but has never been educated on the safety/responsibility side of gun ownership themselves.
I was diagnosted as being 50% hearing impaired at the age of 17. i was 10% in grade school. My father would never accept it. At 16 I was placed in a Peoria Hospital w suisidaul tendices. My 16 year old step son was shot and killed in a house where the grandfather had left a loaded 22 pistol. The cops swept the whole thing under a dirty rug and NOTHING was done about it. All I am left with is a wife and family that is totaly destroyed.
I feel really sorry for you and you're family, but that is totally unfair of you to use that as a reason. My little brother, was killed 2 years ago, at 17 years old in a car wreck and the driver was higher than boat dock gas. No one has stopped driving cars because of that and I would never expect them to. People need to just be more responsible with anything they do in general.
Ok, I'm a recovering alcoholic, a mental health patient [PTSD, chronic depression] and yet I am still an advocate for the Second Amendment. Mr. Earle has made a conscious, responsible choice and it's one that I wholeheartedly support. I myself don't carry on a day to day basis for two reasons: 1. I have taken other human lives and there are consequences to that that no book or movie will ever even adequately describe; and 2. I don't believe my eyes are good enough to draw down and be sure of my target at 50 feet. The two main takeaways are these: 1. IF YOU HAVE KIDS IN YOUR HOME, GET A FREAKING LOCKBOX /SAFE FOR YOUR FIREARMS. Don't share the combination. 2. THE ULTIMATE RESPONSIBILITY FOR ANY FIREARM OWNED BY YOU RESTS WITH YOU. Be responsible, be aware, be cognizant of your weapons at all times.
Thats right, let him learn about gun safety on the streets where it’s safe, and everyone is responsible. My folks started teaching me to respect firearms at age 9, received my first gun at age 14 for Christmas. Put a lot of food on the table, never hurt anyone. Unlike inner cities, no food shot but lots of dead perceived enemies.
Great musician. Irresponsible parent. The drugs were probably more dangerous than the gun. He hid the gun from his father most likely to protect Mr. Earle from his own stupidity. Tragic. Love his music.
I have been a Steve Earle fan for many many years and love and respect the man so much. Thank you Steve for showing us that you can change your life around for never giving up on your dream and bring so much joy into this world with you wonderful talent. )O(
Goodness living in Scotland in the Uk about the only people that are allowed to use guns here I think are farmers, otherwise we have no gun culture to speak off. I was intrigued by the comment regarding police and guns and the notion that people should have guns t be protected from them?! It is only now that they are considering arming our police with taxers. I guess that most British people share my view that despite various accidents re misuse of guns, as a nation you tolerate and seem to in fact encourage there use. It just seems bizarre that you continue to do so.
It would be nice if we didn't have to worry about this problem like you all. Unfortunately, we do, and it's gone on long enough that we're sick and tired of it and the only way left to fight fire is with fire.
Although I respect Mr. Earle's talent, and am a fan of his music, he seems to have lost his mind. First of all, he was a very irresponsible gun owner to have put his child in that position in the first place. Then, when as a parent, he cannot rectify the situation within his own household, he "drops" his kid off somewhere for someone else to deal with the "problem." Okay fine, sounds like Mr. Earle should neither be a parent, nor own a firearm, but if his political stance on Second Amendment rights is to limit others from exercising their God given rights, then this is a problem. I would have liked to hear more from him on this, but it sounds like he is a typical, rich, liberal elitist, with a "better" away for other people to live.
He never said anything about the 2nd amendment. YOU did. And you're right. Its in the bible under 2nd amendment that god wants everyone to have guns and if anyone tells u Thats wrong then shoot them w gods blessing lol...you really came here to post your name calling of steve.
I would not take Steve's word on parenting, autism or virtually any other subject. A talented writer whose ego outstrips his talent by exponential numbers. Married how many times? 5? Rebel without a clue seems to be the most fitting description.
Steve Earl is a good guy now. I don't know why people on here think they are better than drug addicts. there are all kinds of other stuff people are addicted to just don't admit it and cut down everyone else. you people making disgusting comments probably are either overweight... addicted to sex... alcohol... anger... divorced... and or in a bad relationship... or don't like where there life is going.
Nothing to do with him being an addict. It's his 'blame others' attitude! He didn't say they should ban all pipes now did he? And that is what his kids were looking for....He's an idiot, one the "nothing is ever my fault" ass hats
Look I love Steve Earle, Copperhead Road is thee best song ever written, and Guitar Town has the best sounding instrumentals. He’s right, if he’s going to keep guns under his pillow where kids can get them, then he should not have guns. Just leave the rest of us alone
considering Autism is supposedly at 1/50 according to Steve, but even the Fund raising commercials only cite 1/88, clearly the numbers can be fuzzy... Not to mention the very real trend of over diagnoses and Overmedication...the fact is Countless examples of the 'Autism Spectrum' can be found in ever Generation, they just didn't get the current name, or stigma, it wasn't "Billy has autism." it was simply "Billy's a little Off." and either the people around him adjusted accordingly or Billy learned to fake it. and went on to lead an outwardly functional life, without Ritalin et al.
Now this is someone who lives in extremes. Perhaps that's the artistic gene in him. The rate of autism isn't really increasing so much as the criteria gets changed and broadened and more are diagnosed. And of course it's genetic - the fact more males get it is a clue.
Steve is a recovering addict, as one myself i can tell you addicts do stupid things. but, he continues to be an inspiration to those of us who are parents, addicts and citizens of the world. God bless him.
Everyone's on his back but he did say he is not proud of it and he has tried to change his ways. You have to respect the fact he is openly admitting to making some appalling decisions in his life. I think the reason he is admitting to it is because he feels he needs to tell his story and not lie about it weather he looks bad or not. Clearly crack is a terrible drug that distorts your views and makes you do stupid things.
Agreed...but you don't go on a public forum as he did...and knock gun ownership...because you were a turd. He has the right to say.."I'll never own a gun again because I'm irresponsible" but speaking against gun ownership when you're the turd, is chicken shit!
56tinman56 Did he though? I'll have to watch again. I thought the title made that out but thought he just changed his stance on guns. Ill have to rewatch, but anyway the gun crisis in the States is epidemic. It's hard to say you shouldn't ban them but with so many Illegal ones around I suppose why bother. I'm on the fence with this one. One thing I do know is in Australia we banned guns in the 80s after a massacre in Tasmania and the only people getting shot nowadays is crims shooting crims. No massacres at schools, no shootings while mugging people and Police hardly shoot anyone either because they don't really expect people to be packing. The States do love their guns though so I can't see much changing either way. It would be fun to have an AK47 and just shoot up old cars but I'm not sure its worth the hassle. Peace
You are not serious, really? Get your head out of your ass and open your eyes. Bad people are going to own guns no matter what the law is. It's the bad people that shoot up schools and cops. If they could keep guns out of the hands of bad people that would be wonderful. There is no need to fear a good person who owns a gun. Only the bad people who own guns, and bad people will ALWAYS own guns. GET IT? If not, I feel pity for you.

Raised two sons with loaded guns in the house but no crack. If you are a good parent and teach your children well, they will do fine. And if they ever need to defend themselves or their families, they will be prepared. The gun is NOT the problem but it can be the solution and save your life from evil. You cannot defend yourself with a locked gun.

What did he care, he had a drawer full of hard drugs and needles.
The problem is both the gun and the person.
More people were killed with foot and fist than by a murderer with a gun.
It's a human problem, the tool has nothing to do with murders.
That's not a problem with guns, that's a problem with having them around kids who you have not raised properly and trained to use them.

I blame Earle for leaving a loaded gun unsecured. Period. I'm glad it ended OK, and I'm glad he's clean now.
All he said was he doesn't keep guns anymore did't say anything about anybody else.

People who throw a fit about having to jump through hoops to get licensed to own dangerous weapons are, in my experience, actually those who are themselves extremely irresponsible and know they would not be able to qualify to own guns in any state whose laws are structured to prevent gun "accidents" (so called) rather than to prevent at all costs any murderous idiot's being unable to buy any gun he can afford (which seems to be what our laws value most-- MOAR gunz.)
If you aren't intelligent enough to understand why licensing is necessary, or responsible enough to understand the importance of proving oneself to be responsible, or serious and patient enough to maintain licensing that is deliberately made enough of a hurdle to weed out the lazy and easily distracted... well, your having a gun will most probably be more of a hardship for those you hurt or kill with your "accidents" than your not having one to play with will be a hardship to you.
@@judithbradford9130 Plain fact, guns don't kill people. People kill people, the gun is just the tool if it is used for such a crime.

They really shouldn't have guns, but it's not my right to make a law preventing them from having guns.)
Besides those things listed as fun or enjoyable; planning for the future; and protection; there are many others.

I know. I was in Chicago and the area I was in wasn't bad.

Holy shit, for real. Good thing this moron can write songs
Exactly
If he had taken his son out and taught him about guns in the proper context instead of trying to hide it from him, things could have turned out differently. And he would still have some form of protection available.
He seems to be getting along fine without that protection cowboy
I was looking through the comments about who caught that as well.
he's simply being an honest guy... if we could all admit to being flawed parents and people maybe we'd write songs like he does... as far as the gun control issue, i think this is one of the most relevant and touching stories i've heard. thank god it didn't end in tragedy. i too have an autistic child and agree with everything he said on the subject.
Hmmm. No crack or unlocked guns in my house. Just a thought.
I don't want to make guns (or drugs) illegal so no person can get these things, oh no Savagemister, I just enjoy creating avenues for monopolies.
Hope you had a good day
@Branson Mifsud
Infinitely more difficult?
I may be mis-understanding you
Look, I mean we can go back and forth about this for awhile but I think the main issue that people get upset about is that Steve is pro-gun, and people think that he's a libtard.

I agree.
he's saying that he had a scare where his kid got access to his gun and this was one of the reasons he changed his mind about guns. kids kill themselves and others, sometimes accidentally. all the time.
Hola Senor Not if you secure your gun. For that matter, if you teach children to respect the danger of a gun and responsibility that comes with owning it, as I was, it reduced that likelihood.

Remember kids:
A) Store your firearms safely
B) If you had to agree with an artist's opinions on everything you would be living a life without art.
Remember earlier in the video when he said his kids threw out hist crack pipes and syringes?

Great example for his kids about obeying the law.
Because he never taught his kids about proper safety and storage of firearms; this means guns are bad and we need more non sensical asinine gun laws....
I think Steve Earle is a fine example of what man can be. A man can dig a god damned giant hole. He can throw himself into that hole and wallow in the filth. But, Steve Earle has shown us that redemption is not as far away as we think it is. Steve Earle has shown us how to take misery and turn it into something good, kind, and generous. okay I recognize I'm leaving this reply 6 years after the fact... but this just cracks me up to no end.
Earle.
They are finding autism is caused by all the dam vaccines given to kids now days. What's in them vaccines?
My Godson has Autism, and I can tell you it's NOT about parenting. It's something you cannot understand unless you're around a child battling that on a daily basis. I'm not attacking you, just saying.
D O B wrong. Debunked years ago.
Wow you commit your crimes without a weapon. Slick dude. Do u teach your kids that skill too? You may be a thug but at least you're not mindless

That's what I'm talkin' about man...
Cheers
I don't care about his political views. He's an amazing entertainer and song writer. That's good enough for me.
He practiced poor gun security and failed to educate his children on guns. That means we need gun control?
Libtards don't believe in personal responsibility.
What's a Libtard?
Is that the best you can come up with? "Retarded Liberal??? Sorry Jack, I'm a Libertarian if anything, but stupid name calling makes you look like an idiot.
BlindTom61 some dude asked what libtard meant. I explained it. Didn't call anyone a libtard. Please read the whole thread.
BlindTom61
Who you calling an idiot? You couldn't even figure out the meaning of the world "libtard" which is self explanatory. Fucking moron.
I've always been a huge Steve Earle fan. Gosh, I liked him better in his wild, beautiful days.
He took me took ure concert in Springfield, IL in 1988 or 1989. I ws wearing the pink shirt w the grimme reaper on it. Your concert conected me and my father forever. He has a tat of the copperheadroad skull on his arm that says KEEP YOURSELF TO URE SELF Thank you so much for changing my life with ure songs
People need to just be more responsible with anything they do in general.
iBlazeHayAllDay Sorry for your loss. May I please ask if the driver of the vehical was convicted of a crime and held responsible?
Thank you and it's still going on he's still free now and nothing has happened to him yet. It does feel like a slap in the face
The two main takeaways are these:
Steve, sometimes "gun control" means the responsibility to actually own one, and in a drug free environment.
Sounds more like poor parenting and lack storage habits.
Great musician. Irresponsible parent. The drugs were probably more dangerous than the gun. He hid the gun from his father most likely to protect Mr. Earle from his own stupidity. Tragic. Love his music.
I have been a Steve Earle fan for many many years and love and respect the man so much. Thank you Steve for showing us that you can change your life around for never giving up on your dream and bring so much joy into this world with you wonderful talent. )O(
Great guy. So much love from Germany!
When my nephew stole one of my dad’s pistols I gave him about 2 or 3 good, firm slaps to the face and had the gun back right away.
Former addict - he was clean by the time the incident with Justin happened and has been clean since.
That moment when a musician talks... I prefer the music.
So, you are perfect...right??
Nothing to do with him being an addict. It's his 'blame others' attitude! He didn't say they should ban all pipes now did he? And that is what his kids were looking for....He's an idiot, one the "nothing is ever my fault" ass hats
There are no good DRUGGIES, The only people who do DOPE are the WEAK, COWARDS who can't face reality...
Known enough junkies to know that non-junkies are, in fact, better than junkies. If you can't see that, it means you are still a junky.
classickruzer1 no good food addicts.. no good sex addicts. anything that is first before God is bad
Look I love Steve Earle, Copperhead Road is thee best song ever written, and Guitar Town has the best sounding instrumentals. He’s right, if he’s going to keep guns under his pillow where kids can get them, then he should not have guns. Just leave the rest of us alone
I could not love this man any more than i do
considering Autism is supposedly at 1/50 according to Steve, but even the Fund raising commercials only cite 1/88, clearly the numbers can be fuzzy...
And, Steve, you grew up with guns and didnt have this problem even though you knew where your dad's guns were. It isnt the gun.
Seems to me the only one with a brain was the kid keeping a firearm away from a stoner with a pickled head. The kid deserves a medal.
joe dirt the kid deserves prison. His girlfriend ended up found dead in a parking garage dumpster that he had the access code to.
Peace
+56tinman56 potty mouth
You are not serious, really? Get your head out of your ass and open your eyes. Bad people are going to own guns no matter what the law is. It's the bad people that shoot up schools and cops. If they could keep guns out of the hands of bad people that would be wonderful. There is no need to fear a good person who owns a gun. Only the bad people who own guns, and bad people will ALWAYS own guns. GET IT? If not, I feel pity for you.
sheila Boyd Are you talking to me?
“My stance on guns changed BC I left an unlocked, loaded pistol under my bed that my 14 yr old son found. That’s clearly not my fault & has nothing to do my irresponsible behavior. I obviously blame the gun BC inanimate objects have a mind of their own.” 🤦🏼♂️ #PeopleProblemsNotGunProblems
The moment that Steve Earle is no longer played in my house
that's ok don't need small minded people listening to his music
I think I bought a couple of his tapes back in the day.
A better title for this would be "Wisdom free artist makes a valid point about Autism followed by a plea for the government to protect him from behaving like a fool"
