I've only been watching this channel on and off for the past year and half - perhaps two years. I appreciate the mix of relatively entertaining (yet still informative) and more seriously toned videos. The judicious use of peewop is appropriate, in my opinion.
I also find it interesting that this is the first topic I've felt compelled to comment on.
1:32 another part to this answer is marinating the meat. A lot of marinades use vinegar or citrus which which are mild acids. Every form of life has their ideal temperature and pH levels.
This is actually very fresh. This might be the episode where Dr. Mike admitted and mentioned "I don't know" more than once. I love it.
And that is a sign of wisdom. Admitting that you don't know something means you are aware that you can learn about it.

When you're at a doctor's visit, you don't send the doctor your questions ahead of time so they can give you the perfect answers during your appointment. The point of these videos is for him to give us his immediate thoughts right after seeing the question. Anyone can do some research and present their findings in a video.
German speech pathologist here who also deals with swalloing issues: you actually can swallow with an open mouth it's just waaay harder, because usually you need an "under pressure" in your mouth to get your bolus (what you ate) into your throat. That's wgy it's so hard to manage it. Of course, swallowing is way more complex than that but that may be an answer why you can barely swallow with an open mouth :)

Just some informal experimentation, BUT as long as I could reach a significant portion of my tongue to press against the roof of my mouth, I could trigger the corresponding cascade-sequence of muscular contractions and swallow. I legitimately have to look UP and open WIDE to have real trouble at it... BUT I don't think anybody should be doing anything that resembles eating or drinking with their head all the way back and their mouth open as far as they can stretch it and attempting to swallow at the same time anyway. I just do NOT see any good reason for it, or anything good to come of it...
Might help (in my case) to admit that I can fit half the can of soda into my mouth, open it with my tongue, and guzzle the contents... a stupid (quite literally) parlor/party stunt that you probably shouldn't be attempting either... It's the kind of dumb-ass thing I figured out (yes, there was much training) with beer in college...

One of my professors mentioned before that squinting usually helps because poor vision is usually caused by an error of refraction, meaning the light is not focused properly on the retina, making vision blurry (side note: this is why visual acuity tests involve a pin hole test where you look through a pin hole). Squinting is kind of like a reflex reaction that recreates the "pin hole" effect, so that most of the light that enters the eye are parallel rays through the center of the eye that need less redirection from the lens.

One of my worst encounters with a doctor was when I was 19 and I got a bad STI. But- I had NEVER been sexually active. My doctor asked me, and when I told her this, she rolled her eyes. She did not believe me, despite me telling her I was telling the honest truth. She prescribed me medicine for it and told me I was ‘legally obligated’ to tell any sexual partners I had about this. I was so upset and invalidated and hurt because she just refused to believe me and treated me terribly because of it.
Another doctor, that I told about this later, confirmed my suspicion- I had recently taken a bath at my dads house, and he is someone who is.. very active with various people. It’s likely I got that STI from the tub.

Dr Mike. As a young adult in the medical world I’ve found that working as a doctor, nurse, Support worker, (in Canada were I’m from were called PSWs (Personal Support Workers) that compassion care I believe is the future of medicine in a sense, I found that through not only my work experience but your videos aswell that just how powerful being kind, compassionate, and empathetic can truly help those who are suffering, I don’t not believe it’s better than medicine but most definitely plays a vital role in the process. I just would like to know how you feel about it and I just want to be able to get this message out for those who are working in this field and that to also understand to be kind to yourself too and know you are all doing amazing things. Medical or whatever, compassion goes along way.

I got a really bad UTI my senior year of high school. The ER staff checked everything from testicular torsion to a urine sample before deciding on an STI. The kicker was that I was completely a virgin. As a 19 year old guy at the time, they refused to believe I wasn't getting it on at every opportunity (waited until I was married a decade later). They even had the audacity to tell me to warn my partners.
Yes, people should be straightforward with their doc. But the doc needs to listen and be respectful.
I have the same issue as an ace person. Medical staff never believe me about my totally lack of sexual activity. And it's infuriating.
They need to cover their bases. They can’t be certain you aren’t being 100% honest so it’s in their best interest to stress the point especially with that age group since young adults are the most at risk due to amount of sexual activity, education, impulsivity, etc with that age group. Don’t take it personally, they’re just doing their job.
I live in a country where it's not common to snip the boys. I've had many bfs and we talk freely. And talk freely with many men. None have ever had UTI. I have know several Americans online when gaming that had and all were circumcised. It's odd, albeit anecdotal, seen as you get told it's supposed to help that from happening.
UTIs aren't even STIs... it is ABSOLUTELY possible and normal to get UTIs from things other than sex and they are not sexually transmitted so that's such bullshit...
I had an issue when I was ~15-16 (jaundice, super yellow pee, stomach pain, etc.) and the doctor refused to believe that I wasn't a raging alcoholic because he figured it was ruining my liver. He even forced my mom to leave the room to try to coax me into being more honest. I'm 27 now and still haven't drank any alcohol (or done any drugs). I very much understand the CYA aspect of practicing medicine in a very litigious country, but I agree that docs need to be respectful, too. I was made to feel like I was lying when I wasn't. lol Still never found out what the problem was.

In regards to the bath: I was always told to bath in "lukewarm" water, as it's not hot enough or cold enough to shock your system. Also, bathing while ill, in my personal opinion, has always felt relaxing and made me feel better because I felt fresh and clean, having washed off some of the feeling of sickness. Whether or not it has any medical benefits is beyond me, but it definitely feels nice.

Having a hot bath when sick feels so good, yeah, especially the steam helping to moisturize and unclog the sinuses. I wish I had a bigger bathtub, because a bath feels so much better than a shower imo.
I mainly take a bath when sick because I usually feel weak and don’t want to risk slipping in the shower. Another reason is when I’m feeling like I can’t get warm.

I love the fact that Doctor Mike admits that he doesn't know something, and doesn't give false information or a very vague answer which wouldn't help anyone. Another fact that I like about him is that he isn't going to judge a patient or be negative about them. I've had multiple friends tell me to not go to certain doctors because they'll shame you for what's wrong with you. I've also come to love the fact that he Mike doesn't shy away from the topic of any private areas, like I've seen many people do over the years. In my opinion, THAT'S an ideal professional.
Oh, btw I've got a question. Is it true that no one can swallow and breath at the same time ? If someone can, or is claiming to be able to, are they lying, or is it an unusual talent they posses ?

It is impossible, because swallowing and breathing happen through the same tube. Only one can happen at a time, otherwise the stuff you swallow will go into your lungs
I can swallow with my mouth open so it makes sense he doesn't know why is impossible since it is, about the other question I would assume whatever you swallow will go to your lungs so if it was possible you would most likely die
Your stomach and your lungs use the same tube, so you can get food/drink in your lungs or air into your stomach, but that’s the closest you’ll get to breathing swallowing at the same time.
However you can swallow with your mouth opened but you can't breath and swallow at the same time
To add to the one about the regular vs extra strength. I feel that you would have an increasingly built up tolerance to that medication vs just taking the regular strength at the recommended dose. I may be wrong; but, that's what I feel would happen.
Regarding squinting, that's more optics than medicine: to form a clear image, you need to be able to guarantee that all of the light falling on a given part of your sensor came from a single direction. A lens is one way to do this. Another way to do it is to look through a smaller opening, with the caveat that this reduces the total amount of light you take in, so it doesn't really work if it's dark.
optical engineer here! To elaborate on why squinting can help you see clearer, when you squint you are effectively changing the aperture size of your eye, just like in a camera. This means that when the aperture is smaller you are allowing for a greater depth of focus and therefore you should be able to see a bigger range of objects in focus. This is the same effect when you stop down a camera lens from f1.4 to f16. Suddenly an image where only your subject is in focus changes to a scene where everything from the foreground to the background objects is in focus.
Should people with glasses do that for longer period of time?
I do the same thing with my hands and can read distant signboards without needing my myopic glasses

I'm a firefighter who works with EMS a decent amount on cardiac calls( the way our department runs) and they use the Lucas device. From what I can tell it does really well auto adjusted to a lot of different sizes to get the proper depth compressions. Sadly there is definitely a size limit that it can't go past the way it is built. I'm not sure if other companies have made advances for those with larger bodies but ours currently would not work on someone that size.

0:06 You CAN swallow with your mouth open. I do it all the time. I had a surgery done on my head that caused paralysis in half my face,tongue,lips,left eye,etc. If I try to drink normally,for example, from a bottle of water or soda bottle, or from a glass or coffee mug, I dribble and spill the liquid all over myself. So I simply open my mouth,tilt my head back, and I pour the liquid into my open mouth and and just keep swallowing. I can down an entire bottle of water this way in seconds. If you're wondering why I drink the entire container in one go, it's because, if I attempt to stop when there is still liquid in the container, it's hard to do so without spilling it on myself. But if I just down the entire thing, there is nothing left to spill.

1 I can sallow with my mouth open you cover the back of your throat with your tongue to aid and help swallow :) but ya probably vacuum pressure aids it to keep acid reflux down :) I dont' need to do the whatever if I'm chugging a drink though :) because the liquid creates vacuum pressure

The explanation about the funny bone was really enlightening, I‘m sad I never knew about it earlier. My dad died from a specific kind of cancer in his upper lung that spread into his shoulder and is known to do severe nerve damage. What started out as „muscle“ pain in his arm quickly developed into nerve pain that was so hard to control because the sensation kept changing the more the nerves were affected. The doctors tried so many different pain medications but he always said it felt like something was „working“ inside his arm (common descriptions were bees or ants) that drove him crazy. Sometimes massages helped, other times even the slightest touch against his skin would make him cry out in pain. I never actually understood and often wondered how he must’ve felt but imagining him experiencing that funny bone sensation 24/7 is so painful and I wish I could’ve done more to relieve the pain😔

In the UK, if the specific DNR order form is not present with the patient at the time of them requiring cpr, then that person will be resuscitated without any consequences to the person providing cpr

You can swallow with your mouth open.
It's actually my go-to way to ease sore throat symptoms. Tilt your head back and swallow with your mouth still open; the water coats more of the farthest back periphery of your mouth than with normal swallowing, which feels great when you've been coughing a lot.
Yes I can😅 do it by raising my tongue or as you described it by tilting my head back.
Somebody taught me to do this to relieve pressure in my ears. It works really well.

9:28 you never went in a nice warm shower when you feel like death or when your head hurts it feels soo good
I'm an SLP student, and while I think it is possible to swallow with your mouth wide open, you might feel some strain on your jaw because the back of your tongue is trying to press up against the roof of your mouth. Your tongue rises up to move the food into your throat, which will then trigger the nerves responsible for the swallowing reflex (which I think Dr. Mike was referring to, when he mentioned the soft palate and the epiglottis).
Your tongue also moves up to stop food and drink from falling back out. If it's safe for you, you can try to swallow some saliva or a bit of water with your mouth wide open and feel how your tongue tries to move!
Of course, you can hold a bottle of water above your lips and chug it down as it pours, but you'll also probably tilt your head way back, so the water moves into the throat through gravity. (And hopefully your tongue is still engaged to control how much water is in your throat!)
We use the LUCAS at my hospital but you can’t use it on people who are very large because it won’t fit around their chest properly. You have to push really hard to get good compressions on large people; we usually just have to change out compressors very frequently because it gets very tiring. We also work as a team and keep an eye out to make sure the person compressing IS getting the depth they need to. And as a small person, I try to let larger people do compressions when possible, and I help with other things like recording, shocking, or meds. But if I have to do compressions, I get my knees in the bed next to the patient so I can get the leverage I need to do it right.

All forty-two years of my life my base body temp has been 38.5C. I am almost always sweating. I need a fan on pretty much at all times.
I think the bath and fever thing is more so that there's usually other symptoms like body aches or congestion with a fever.
I'm 6' 10", 400lb. and I never thought about the efficacy of someone else providing me with CPR. I have, on the other hand, thought about how 'not knowing my own strength' could prevent me from providing successful CPR. Interesting.

My son is also a large, strong, guy. He did first aid training on one of those digital dummies and basically shattered every rib in the chest and quartered the sternum. The tiny little trainer said "put your whole upper body into it" and...he did, lol. Practice helps, if you have the means, take a class with practice dummies.
Dr Mike. I can swallow with my mouth open. I just demonstrated that for my daughter by chugging my bottle of flavored water - pouring it into my mouth with my head tipped back and swallowing it with no issues. I learned to do this in army basic training when they used to make us drink canteens full of water very quickly. I can either swallow it, or literally open my esophagus and pour it directly into my stomach.

You cannot swallow when there is nothing to swallow. Meaning you can try to swallow with closed empty mouth multiple times in a row and each other swallow will be MUCH harder to do then previoud one up to point when you couldn't swallow for some time.
Meaning you can swallow even with open mouth if there is something to pass through, like water. Granter you still move mouth and tongue, just not close it

I see you e mentioned the Lucas device (automated CPR) a few times. It’s beyond tested. We have one at the ski resort I work at. Many ambulances have them. Ours may not accommodate someone over 500lbs/7ft. It can accommodate larger body dimensions however due to its design some people may not fit between the arms of the device. Its design has a back plate that goes under the pt, then the device clicks into place over the pt. It’s a cool device. We use it in a toboggan for CPR transport off the mountain to more definitive care.

I like a hot bath when i'm sick cause it feels good. And i do exit into a warmer environment (the steamy room), and then i usually bundle up before I leave or am headed directly to bed where i can snuggle under blankies.
Just cause your body wants you to be warm doesn't mean you have to be uncomfortable while that happens. We can work together to reach an ideal temperature.
love you dr mike but i want more clarity on the meat cooking portion. are these chemicals a concern when using open flames only? would well done otherwise be the safer option if you were using an oven or an electric stove, etc.
I did a CPR/BLS class recently and got certified and it's definitely something everyone should do! Especially if you're a parent.
God forbid it be something they teach in schools. Along with how to change a tire and file your taxes. Preparing children for real life would be nice.

That still doesn't change the fact that it's garbage. My favourite feature is how it dims the screen in bright sunlight so you can't see anything. And Google refuse to accept that there's anything wrong. Not that I care now. I bought an iPhone a few months ago and never have to deal with crappy Android ever again.

I'll say this, I have control of a muscle in the back of my throat that I can willingly flex inwards which prevents my nasal passageway from delivering air. Same when swallowing, you cannot breath through your nose (maybe the same muscle). So, on my take for the reason why you need to close your mouth to swallow is you need to create a vacuum in order to "suck" in your food.
As a transplant recipient, we'll done is my only temperature. I like my beef at 140, Pork at 160, and poultry at 180. I worry more about poultry diseases than anything else. Birds are raised in worse conditions than cows and in tighter quarters, so disease spreads faster.
salmonella is harmless to chicken and it's apparently prevalent in them but it does harm to us. so well done for chickens no question about that

I'd love to see you cover different types of Dysautonomia like POTS. I have POTS and part of that for me is that I don't sweat anymore. I have a solid medical team for my care but a lot of doctors aren't knowledgeable about conditions like that. Would love to see how you would help patients that can't regulate their system properly.
How do you regulate your body temperature? Or do you just not exercise or do anything strenuous?
My mother says I was given a cold bath in a very cold day at an hospital when I was a baby, because I had a strong fever from an UTI and was on the brink of death.
She also told me they gave me IV fluids/medication through a vein on the head because the fever was making my arm's and hand's veins blow too easily.
I can crack one of my ankles really loudly at will and it's really funny when I do it repeatedly and look at the face of the other person / people in the room because their always either confused or disgusted

When I had mono at 14 years old, my temperature was 106 degrees and rising. My mother was suggested to put me in a normal temperature bath (~100 degrees) which helped to bring my fever down to 101-103 degrees and gave me significant relief. Considering we were warned that brain damage could occur at 108 degrees, I think this bath was extremely helpful and perhaps life saving. It helped to keep my fever within a safe range when my body wasn’t able to regulate it properly.
In all fairness, he was talking about regular fevers and not life threatening fevers. We have a habit of trying to get rid of fevers the second we hit 100 degrees and we take Tylenol or jump in a cool bath. His point was let your body fight the way it’s designed to. That’s completely different from a life threatening fever.

I tried nasal irrigation once and have been afraid to try again. For whatever reason, when the water hit it felt like I had a needle driven straight through the back of my nose into my brain followed by a bad headache for about an hour.

When I first found and started to watch Doctor Mike videos, I was very much initially confused by the peewoop sound effect, but it grew on me pretty quickly, especially after learning and confirming it's origins and purpose as a transitional sound effect. I am a proud peewoop stan.

I agree with dr Mike's decisions. For the more serious videos, it would become a bit inappropriate to say such cheerful, comedic catchphrase.
I unknowingly expected it from dr. Mike's videos that when he says peewoop, I geared my expectation for more fun and not serious video while when he isn't doing his peewoop thing, I expect the video going to be of a more serious tone. Since he mentioned it here, I came to realize my own expectation when watching him.
