Horror movie samples were used a lot also. Check Tommy Wright III, Playa Fly, Gangsta Pat, 3-6 Mafia and basically every artist from Memphis (late 80s to late 90s)

Never heard of Trap music until the mid 2000s and I was on the air as a mix show DJ in the 80s and 90s (1987 - 2003). The majority of my 70,000+ vinyl collection comes from promotional copies given to me from record labels, so I have a lot of rap records in my library.

Detune the osc for the plugin if you dont have decimort 2, ill normally detune my osc slightly to help give me a more darker feel for these style's, sometimes ill find presents mad detuned then retune just to detune back to my liking for more control, changing the lfo pitch helps too for more monte Booker esc ideas

Paul and Juice used (and still do use) A LOT of horror movie samples, like an insane amount. So some of these sounds you are trying to emulate came directly from movies and soundtracks so I'm sure that helped especially when they didn't back then like we do now have all of the software available. Tritons, Casios and ASRs were probably mostly all they had

"GHETTO MAFIA" 1ST used "TRAP" on "Draw The Line" released in 1994. Them and groups like the "HARD BOYS" PIONEERED "TRAP MUSIC". BTW they (Ghetto Mafia) are from DECATUR GEORGIA. I KNOW WICKED PERSONALLY. 👌🏾 Y'all dudes OUTSIDE OF THE CULTURE GET WAY TOO COMFORTABLE THINKING YOU CAN REWRITE HISTORY AND RENAME THAT WHICH YOU DID NOT CREATE. It IS "MEMPHIS" music AKA EARLY CRUNK music. The 1st artist I went on tour with is the LEGENDARY "TELA" from The M reppin "Black Haven" 🤙🏾so I KNOW... #IWasThere 🤷🏾‍♂️
