Detroit certified tech here..super common for the DDEC 6’s to break injector rockers. It’s a good idea to go ahead and replace all 6 rockers to keep it from happening again. As for the vgt codes, they can be finicky just like the Cummins ones..be sure to load test the power and ground going to the actuator, it’s common for wires to rub behind the head
Thank you Warren, I read your Daughter's reply on what some guy's said in the comments from on your video the video "John Deere 4050 powershift part something or other" (yeah I pressed the like button for her comment cause she's your daughter and she's got a great Father) hope she's reads this comment but enjoy your trip and experience, your father sure comments about you in his video's and proud of you, he raised you well along with your Mom, and don't let any of those turkey dumps on the comments section tell you otherwise, it's your life not theirs, have a safe trip 👍, thank you for the video Warren 👍.
Measures peak amps between pulses of compression. A good quick way to find a dead cylinder with low no compression. Even on gas engines Ps I know you know that you are a top gun on east coast..Comrade
Wow Warren, it’s a good thing it didn’t get driven hard after the rocker broke. Could have been some terminal damage huh. Great job getting that figured out. Thank much for sharing this video!
@13:00 As one who has driven pre-2010 freightliners and currently owns a 2000 Freightliner century, believe me, I have felt your pain. Eventually, I bought a step stool to place next to the inside of the street tire to make climbing to another elevation easier on my aging 57 year-old body.
Always interesting opening things up .never know what your gonna get. Kind of like Christmas 🎄 lol. Have a great day Warren . You have the best library of videos on utube
Great video Warren that's not good finding a broken injector rocker or maybe a bad Injector itself. Thanks for sharing really enjoy watching you troubleshoot this truck. Looking forward to your next video stay safe Warren.
If you have a misfire and all is good under the rocker cover here is a quick check.Check the ECM wiring the comes out of the ECU for the injectors.I have found the wires rubbed through and shorting out together.Making a misfire.Engine running with misfire take a plastic item and push the shorted wires apart misfire gone.Just an idea here.
Appreciate the videos, Warren. That seems like an odd failure. I would think if they set the injectors wrong it would have broken more, or one was improperly set. Looks like they might have gotten lucky. Thanks Again, Warren.
Had one do that on a 3406 cat i was just resealing the pan but dropped it and found metal chunks but it never sounded like it was misfiring ended up two rockers were eating the cam and #1 injector was broke off on the adjuster I ran the overhead and intake was way to tight
Despite all the wires, control units and software that are now added to a modern engine it can't friggen detect and report that a valve is NOT working!! What a fine example of the stupidity we've got ourselves into with modern technology and management.
These are such good engines. Good power cheap to fix reliable. We had a few in Linkbelt cranes and Freightliner s.. This tech was a game changer in 1990 when Penske Detroit introduced it.
How are the cam lobes around that broken injector? I think I seen bit of scuffing maybe the retainer or side chips bounced over and got in between the moving parts. Or not, looking again its the mirror reflection of the springs I was seeing.
Another Great Video Warren. As a retired field Mechanic, I enjoy your Videos and perspective. Wishing you all a Very Happy Holiday PS What is the brand of your orange gloves? THX Tom
Hi Warren! Another great video. I was just wondering about the coolant res on that truck. Looked like the lower expansion portion was full of coolant and you stated that the engine was stone cold. Could be a shadow but if it's coolant it needs a reservoir.
What brand are the jakes? Taking one off seems better than 3. Also what the specs on your laptop set up. Looking to invest in one to save on repair bills.
Looks like the tightened that adjuster to much and snap.... My rule of thumb was on any engine I worked on , if it's missing bad and I exhausted all options look in the head and valves ! And I was correct 100%of the time
I use to drive a couple Freightliners like this one for a Ag- Fertilizer plant, I hated them, the interior was falling apart and the engine was not very powerful. Didn’t feel like the 470 that they were rated at. I would much rather have an older 60 series then the newer ones.
The injector stuck and broke the rocker arm, I had one similar happen. I replaced a rocker and set everything back and it ran three days and broke again. After I replaced the injector and another rocker arm it ran good again. Later a roller on another rocker broke and I replaced it. After chasing my tail and not finding a definitive problem, I sent off an oil sample. The customer had been given a drum of shitty single viscosity oil made for gasoline engines and was using it and changing oil at extended drain intervals. After a oil change with good oil and filters his problems went away. I know this was just a one time thing, but it made a believer out of me and oil sampling. That free drum of oil also cost him a GM 6.5 Diesel pickup truck engine. Free wasn't free.
Replace all 6 injectors he over rev'd the engine. Open the inj harness connector at the rocker box. If oil present, replace the upper harness, remove the inj harness at the ecm, if oil present replace the lower harness.
I'm gunna have a guess on a second viewing. The injector siezed, broke the rocker which then damaged the keeper. Why would an injector sieze, or even would an injector sieze is beyond my knowledge. One thing is for sure, something stopped that rocker dead.

"relative compression"... Extreme powerful test!
I wonder what its monitoring for that data,i doubt it uses amps :)

It pays to look into when something sounds bad and you did just that good call hope you find the turbo problem happy days ✌
Great detective work on finding the broken rocker, could have been adjusted when not at TDC and was loose.
You do get them warren .keep up the good work 👍👍👍
Great work as always Warren merry Christmas and happy new year to you and your family 🌲🎉

I have seen that before Warren, set to tight, when you pull the injector try and make sure the injector sleeve is not deformed.
I’m thinking either the preload wasn’t set correctly or the injector cause I’ve never seen a rocker crack and break like that
Working at a freightliner dealer pretty common failure the injectors lock up and bye bye rocker
@17:15
A tutu running through your backyard...???
Morning feller... wouldn't mind a 60 series powered rig... they're a good engine...have got the other two... anyway...have a good day man👊
Is the hole where the filter minder open? Hate to see it’s sucking dirt.
I noticed the same thing...a sensor removed?

Warren where do you get your manuals from
good vid warren
When I see Warren struggling with a heavy part, I wish I could help him.
Had one break from a stuck injector

DDec 6 is one of the worst s60 engines ever built. 3 and 4 were some of the best. DDEC2 had lots of piston problems
Warren did you ever get to finish the engine swap on the cat ct660
How many times have those mirrors on the hood clotheslined you

The oil wasn't the problem, it was the guy pouring it into the wrong engines ...
Those turbos are only $1200-$1500 refurbished aren't they? Or do you prefer to replace with only new turbos?
Warren hasn't had good luck with refurbs!
Damn Warren I thought you were a goner for a minute there when you about fell
are the hyflex gloves any better warren ??

I hate when chunks are missing!
Missing chunk in the oil pan?
I'm not sure how large the oil return ports are but that's my guess
👍
That’s actually common on those engines
Could you put a set of knee pads under your you coveralls. See you climb on you Kees make my bad Kees hurt to watch.
Interesting.
Injector stuck most likely or just a bad casting on the rocker. Ive seen it before but only on the valves never the injector.
Yeah you might want to rerun the rack on that one in case they set it wrong.
😊😊😊😊
Possibly the injector plunger seized and the end of the rocker was the weak point
Common issue with 60 series!
I just took a big freightliner...
Might have been dropped and created a hairline crack that gave away when a load was pt on it.
I'm gunna have a guess on a second viewing. The injector siezed, broke the rocker which then damaged the keeper. Why would an injector sieze, or even would an injector sieze is beyond my knowledge. One thing is for sure, something stopped that rocker dead.
