I am a 82 year old mostly retired designer, illustrator, commercial artist who is venturing into watercolor because it has never been my media, and I just wanted to relax and have some fun. When I was young, I painted in oils, then acrylics, then gouache, then pen, then digital in many commercial applications. Over the years I have collected a personal file of favorite illustrations. This image is one in it…and I did not even know your name! Imagine my surprise to stumble on your channel. I absolutely love this illustration and color range. It is absolutely seductive! Just to let you know that I am an old fan. Beautiful work.
Thank you so much. You speak beautifully, and better yet, your information and suggestions are clear and concise. I'm definitely subscribing and looking forward to learning more from you. I suspect I'll find myself magnetically drawn to your Patreon site.
Anna, cudos to you for stepping out of your comfort zone! I think that your moose turned out beautifully! I truly enjoyed and really appreciated being able to watch you paint him in real time. I fully intend to watch this tutorial several more times. The real frosting on the cake was the Q&A that you managed to so successfully integrate during this video. What a fabulous and novel idea!!! Thanks ever so much for your inspiration, you are one of my very, very favorite artists here on UTube. I very much look forward to your next tutorial as I continue to learn so much from you. 👩🦳🖌️
I think he turned out beautifully. Even though you stepped outside your comfort level colour wise...it's still very much a you painting. Thanks for the Q&A. Very helpful! And today I received my new Chronos brushes and I am super excited.
I think you are such humble artist. I appreciate your honest opinions about your own works. [ I do assure you they are magnificent even your simple sketches in your first book. ] Thanks for all the great advice on whats most important in watercolor basics.
I love granulating watercolors and wouldn't want to wait :). So many wonderful watercolors to choose from and I can't really limit myself. Also the Chronos brushes and 100% cotton paper are great. Thanks for the fun video. Lovely painting!
I so admire your work Anna and I might have said it before but you are so easy to listen to. I also admire any artist including yourself who can paint in colours not normally seen in nature. I am such a literal painter and what I see in the photo I just have to paint.. not sure how I can get out of that box!! I'm hearing a lot about granulation lately, is it a new term? I must Google it, even though it doesn't sound like I am at that level at all. Thankyou for a wonderful tutorial which I just had to watch over and over. cheers from Western Australia
Thank you again for your comments Jenny! Granulating watercolors are colors with larger than usual pigment particles - they tend to "gather" around on wet paper creating texture. You can find that information on the tube - it usually says "G" if the pigment is granulating. Some are very subtle {like your typical french ultramarine} some are more pronounced. I have a video where i use super granulating pigments - ruclips.net/video/IPra-kiX45o/видео.html Enjoy!
I was really looking forward to this video, and it did not disappoint! I asked about the materials specifically, and am so glad that you provided such a thorough and well worded answer! Thank you for all of the answers too! When I switched to 100% Cotton Arches 300gsm paper it felt like I had just entered an entirely new medium in art. I had used a variety of non-cotton 250gsm paper as I did a lot of character art that worked okay with it. But when I started doing more fine art (have been obsessed with botanical art for a year now - your Patreon has been SO incredibly rewarding on this journey). When I started at an art high school, I got myself a set of watercolours in 2011. I had been intendentti to get something cheaper and a student grade, but my dad who was helping pay for the set, insisted that we buy high quality paints as they’ll last forever. We bought me an 18 colour set of Schmincke. It was many many years before I started really practicing with watercolour properly and started primarily using watercolours… But today, with just 2 of the colours about to run out 12 years later, I am so grateful that I was able to get this professional set from the start. I have added to my set, But haven’t used any other brand other than some Metallics from Coliro and a couple of handmade colours from a small business. I would love to some day try out another brand… But I have honestly not ever felt that Schmincke couldn’t pull off what I would want to do. So right now as the finances aren’t too great due to the Economical situation, I’ll stick to my Schmincke Horadam Professional watercolours. In general though - if you have the money to spend and want to try sthg new - I highly recommend the Schmincke brand. Though it is unfortunate how they’re not that readily available.
Hi, Anna. I love your beautiful paintings and watching you paint on Patreon has taught me a lot. I agree on your comment that paper is the most important. I am saving a little money by gluing loose paper into my own blocks. I use Lineco Neutral pH Adhesive. I look forward to each new video.
M. Graham is also a professional brand of watercolour (originally made in USA - not sure if still made there). It is honey-based so apparently not great for warm humid climates such as Australia.
Thank you Mary! Great recommendation- I tried 2-3 of their pigments when I first started - still have the ochre tube 😊good quality as far as I remember, and a good range I just don’t see it very often here in Toronto.
@@AnnaBucciarelli Yes, supplies since Covid have been scarce. Curry's Art Store used to carry it, but they seem to have trouble with stock now. M. Graham brand are a favourite of Steve Mitchell (Mind of Watercolor channel in the U.S.). A lot of painters love Winsor & Newton as you mentioned. Perhaps I will try a tube one of these days. I love ochres -- as you mentioned, Daniel Smith has a crazy amount of various ochres.
This is such a helpfull video! I really enjoy how you combine questions with painting a beautifull piece art. Thank you so much for answering my question, ill definitely look into the paints you mentioned!
Yes I agree that granulating colours used to their full effect are a subject of their own, although I do use them with my others I find so much care needs to be taken as to where and when to include add them, or some unhappy accidents happen, I’m presently collecting a palette of just granulating paints as I love the effects so much and in playing with them I’m finding a completely different style just for them and also topics I wouldn’t normally find inspiring, I normally do wildlife but granulating pigments do amazing landscapes so I being pushed out of my comfort zone by them 😊
Helpful and enjoyable to watch. I admire your painting style. As for granulating pigments I only use them in very loose florals or abstract backgrounds. I don't find them appropriate for detailed work. You are a powerhouse of information and clear instruction. I see a book in your future. I hope!
My request is that you do a lesson on how to interpret lights and shadows on paintings without making it choppy. How do you choose colour temperatures as well. Please
Very nice moose. The only thing I question is the eye ball. It looks unpainted. Moose have dark brown eyes. I’m also excited to look up the new escoda line you recommended. I have versatil and reserva. I very much prefer reserva. But I will check out the new line. Thank you for the video.
Beautiful painting and very interesting and helpful advice.👍🏻 I'm still quite a beginner and this is the first time I hear about layers. Do you have a video about it or could you briefly explain what the purpose is of painting several layers? What do I obtain? Thanks, I'll now go and check out your other videos 😊
When I started watercolour painting just less than a year ago, I was clueless about supplies, but fortunately stumbled on the correct paper. In my case, being vegan, I don’t use Arches but use Fabriano Artistico 100% cotton 300g (140lbs). Since then I’ve been gifted some paper that isn’t 100% cotton and while it’s good paper, it just doesn’t stay wet for long enough. This is not ideal for a beginner as you really need confidence to paint quickly. So I agree, paper is so important, if I hadn’t used 100% cotton from the start, I would have found the process more difficult than it needed to be and been disappointed with the results. My advice, buy 100% cotton paper in a smaller size if you’re on a tight budget. Again, with paint, I enrolled in a class and was given a list of brands and colours to get and being vegan, chose Daniel Smith (mostly vegan except for colours using PBK9, fortunately not on my list). I find Daniel Smith paints to be beautiful and easy to use. Granulating pigments are among my colours but I’ve had no problem with them, probably because in class we paint a wide variety of subjects using different techniques and they work well for some of the subjects we paint. Of course, guidance from my very experienced teacher is helpful here! My brushes are synthetic and work really well. I love your tutorials and really look forward to them here on RUclips and I’m looking forward to learning about how you approach composition. Hopefully that will be on RUclips? Thanks for taking the time to make them 🙏
Thank you for sharing your experiences Nancy! Great recommendation on Fabriano Artistico 👌 I completely forgot about this one and it’s definitely very good - thank you!
I’m commenting as I’m watching hahha. Anna, I have some schmincke paints, epsecially supergranulating one- I can make dot card for you if you want and send it to you!
6:03 concerning lifting of colors with the second layer one addition from my point of view: I made the experience that opaque colors lift more easily then the transparent ones, even if I let it dry over night. So opaque colors seem not to be the best for layering techniques.

From delicate flowers to painting a moose. It doesn't get any better than this. Oh, my happy eyes 🙂❤️
A good practice ! I can't believe you called it a good practice ! Damn, it's absolutely stunning ! This moose looks so real, it's amazing !
Daniel smith has a fairly transparent Yellow Ochre. Van Gogh is a student line that is brilliant and lightfast.

Very Informative and loved watching the process of this painting. The colors you used on the Moose turned out awesome!
It's beautiful and another great video, as always. Thanks so much! You're awesome! Much love from Nashville TN USA 🇺🇸 ❤️
Thank you! I am looking forward to more landscape paintings.
Anna what a brilliant lesson.👍 so much helpful information. Your paintings are second to none. I think I just have to come back to your Patreon . ❤️
Love your Moose colors!!!! I think people love colors they look good in, and dislike colors they don't look good in. Like me not wearing hot pink lol.

this is stunning water color tutorial.. i love it..
Thank you 😊💗
I would love to see you repaint this with your usual colors…..more transparent and use it to compare what the different pigments do.

This is off topic but where can I purchase one of your beautiful coins, either as a coin or as a pendant? This video was so interesting.
Can you use a hair dryer to speed up the drying process or it's not recommended? Thanks
What is the Chinese name for the "host and guest" technique? I want to research it. Good information in this video!
Wonderful painting! Can you provide the link for the reference photo? Thank you so much for sharing...
Ohhhhh so sorry I forgot to add the photo!!! Thank you I just added in the description as well unsplash.com/photos/XIqCrFOqf5A
Anna… do you have this as a full tutorial on Skillshare or Patreon??
Hi Kim! This one was just a small sketchbook exploration. I always mention in the video when a composition is recorded in full as a tutorial 😊
Are you painting wet on dry?
For the most part yes 😊
