I just picked up the quatermass experiment yesterday. Very cool coincidence. Thank you for doing this overview. Now I know what I have to look forward to. Great video Bryn.
The BBC used to set on fire master copy film reels in a steel barrel out back to make space the didn't have, without thinking of the consequences, back in the 1960's, especially Dr. Who, there used to be 110 missing episodes of DW. I have the old dvd Quatermass Trilogy on my shelf, haven't seen it yet. Great Review👍😀
Great video on the Quatermass films, Bryn. My own order of preferences for this trilogy are: 1. The Quatermass Experiment; 2. Quatermass and the Pit; Quatermass II.
Here in the US (Chicago area) Quatermass and the Pit was on regular annual rotation on WGN television as 20 Million Miles to Earth in the 70s and 80s. I wish we'd have had the other two to watch.
I’m definitely gonna watch these. They’ve been on my tbw list. Brian was in the great movies Kiss of Death and Destry Rides Again. Great vid! 👍🏻🪐🪐🪐🪐🪐🎥🎥🎥🎥🎥
I like all three the first one has a terrific performance from Richard Wordsworth( The slimy villain who doesn't trust Frankenstein in :The Revenge of Frankenstein) Quatermass and the Pit has a great screenplay and i like Andrew Keir as Quatermass
Yeah I like these movies. The first and last being the strongest. The second one a bit dull I thought but still watchable. My fav one is the first. I think it's a really chilling film. The way the guy transforms into the alien, it's still very scary. Cheers.
Hi Bryn Great topic again I enjoy all the quatermass films and there is no weak one. If i at to choose my favourite it would be quatermass 2 A solid film from start to finish. With a great performance from sid James, a pity he was typed cast in the carry on films. In this film it shows what a good straight actor he was. There was also the quatermass TV series with the great John Mills. On a side note are you planning to do another 24hr film marathon. Cheers.
Glad you like them too, Paul. I thought the same thing about Sid James - would love to have seen him play more serious roles. I'll definitely be doing another 24 hour marathon, probably in the next few months - thanks for asking about that :)
I have a three-hour adaptation of the six-part BBC serial. It stars the great Andre Morrell (Plague of the Zombies) as Dr. Quatermass. It's called Quatermass & the Pit (B/W, 207 minutes). It's truly super, very scary! Look for it & you shall find it. Highly recommended. 👍🏻👍🏻
Directed by Val Lewton?! 🤔 actually the other Val, Guest. Great movies, love each one on its own merits. Favourite is probably Pit as it has the gorgeous Barbara Shelley in it. For me the weak link in the first two is Donlevy who seems to be rushing through his scenes as fast as possible, would definitely have preferred someone else but I think they needed an American actor for finance and distribution deals. If you want to see Sid (billed as Sidney) James in another straight role check out the British made noir No Orchids For Miss Blandish. Another entertaining video, Bryn 👍
Richard Wordsworth, the mutating astronaut, was the great-great-grandson of William Wordsworth, co-founder with Samuel Taylor Coleridge of the Romantic school of poetry. 👾 🚀 ✍🏻
Man! You are totally in my Wheelhouse with this series. Got 'em all and the 2nd and 3rd TV serials. Brian Donlevy is, as I've said over on Rob's channel: Da' Man! And his strong, " I'm in charge" attitude anchors everything that happens in both movies. Nigel Kneale is a poo-poo head. And wrong. I found the 2nd movie in a thrift shop before seeing the others under the title Enemy from Space, so I have a special affection for that one. My personal favorite. Now I'm going to talk heresy here: the 3rd movie was made 10 years after the first two after Hammer had it's huge successes with their Horror films, which explains why it took to get made. Just an aside; the director of the first two was Val Guest, not Val Lewton, who was a Producer of some Classic horror films Worthy of it's own video series. I actually prefer the 50s BBC TV serial of Quartermass and the Pit and found the actor (Jay Robinson...?)had more of that take charge attitude and less of the stereotypical British scientist personality. In any case, all of the Quartermass movies and the serials are time well spent. Great job, Bryn.
Glad you're a fan of these too, Tony. I agree, Brian Donlevy is fantastic in the role. Ah, no!! Did I really say Val Lewton!?? Thanks for correcting me there! I really need to check out the 50s BBC TV serial. Thanks for watching!
@ horrorhands- I am a stupidly huge fan of the Quartermass series of movies and TV shows and even bought and read thoroughly the only (to my knowledge) book devoted strictly to the whole 'franchise'. FANatic. I rewound that spot when you mistakenly said "Val Lewton", which is completely understandable considering his contributions to the Horror genre. Val Guest had a totally strong hand in developing the scripts for both of the first two Quartermass films. He likely wrote parts of them and he was a staunch supporter of Brian Donlevy in the role. And Brian delivered big time. I have a number of his older Noir films and comedies and he deservedly won an Oscar® for his performance in 1937's Beau Geste. The serials are great too and well worth a watch. But I'm prejudiced. Big fan.
I'm pleased to hear you mention how British these movies are because one of the things I love (about the first two movies in particular) is how quintessentially British they are. The first two are my favourites and I genuinely think they're amongst some of the greatest 1950s Sci-Fi horror movies out there, competing with many of the US classics. Where as "Quatermass and the pit" (which is still a great movie by the way) has had more of the Hammer treatment and feels more like it's own thing which (I think) derives it from it's original roots a little bit. (I still love it though). They're all brilliant movies as far as I'm concerned. This was great content Bryn, I enjoyed this one 👍
I'm in Canada & I have them all. I can't remember where I sourced them, but I access Amazon, eBay, Etsy, Deep Discount, & some other sites for rare DVD's. I think I got them all quite easily, & all from the same vendor. So keep looking, they're out there! 💿
Thanks H! Quatermass is just the tip of the iceberg there's so many more but l don't have a region free player so lm restricted (region b only) plus uk is very slow with blu ray releases still waiting for barbarian. love & monsters etc. Have a good one : }
The Quatermass movies which still exist :D There were originally more Quatermass movies but many of them have become lost media. Cool vid! In your opinion, do you think Lifeforce was a good representation of a Quatermass homage?
Yeah, it's a shame a lot of the serial episodes are now lost. I've never actually thought about the connection between Lifeforce and Quatermass! I guess the sci-fi and British elements tie in well :) thanks for watching, Jack.
@@horrorhands879 Oh boy, first time I watched Lifeforce, I was like 'this is a Professor Quatermass story', lol. I think the rights to the character are in legal limbo, I was reading up some articles on the topic after I watched your vid.
@horrorhands - unrequested 2¢ : please no. If an actor of the quality of Sir John Mills didn't pull off a version anywhere nearly as good as these originals... no. Just no.
Quatermass.......Quatermass......No, doesn't ring any bells. Doesn't sound like something I would be into though. But I'm sure your coverage was top notch. And I probably would have agreed with your opinions on the subject. That is, if I knew anything about it. Which I don't.
@@horrorhands879 I don't know. That doesn't sound right to me. I only saw one other channel talking about it and that channel was a filthy, filthy mess.

Glad you like them too. Thanks very much, mate. I’ll look at doing some more 👍

Those look great. I love those old movies. Like I've mentioned before, thanks for filtering out the not-so-great ones for me lol
Haha, no problem! These are definitely worth checking out if you want to see some excellent old fashioned sci-fi 👍👍

they are still very scary, much more sense of the unknown and an atmosphere of dread a lot of modern films should take some tips from these films
