@@lessharratt8719 I have been interested in gold mining for a long time after flying up in the Yukon and Alaska on the Lab, seeing old mines and paddle wheelers washed up on the river banks. @@rossbrown9156 There are probably some clubs or organizations near you where you can find out what's going on in your area. I have been prospecting for years and have nothing to show for it other than some great memories. All of my mining gear is back packable and no where near the kind of mining done in the Yukon or Alaska. It is really just a way to get out in the wilderness and have a legitimate reason to be there. You actually get some rights from the Gov. when you hold a free miners certificate. Just bought a claim on Vancouver Island that shows some potential to finally find some gold but it's really the opportunity to be out and try more than anything else for me. I have friends older than you that will not give up and they are some of the finest people you could ever hope to meet. A lot of truck camping and day trips going on there. If you can, get a dog and a rifle and hit the boonies. If I can be of any help, just reply and I'll do what I can. I have a camp set up now just about 15 km south of Port Renfrew. Not for the faint of heart to get to but if you don't mind scratching up your 4x4 you are welcome to check it out with myself and my friend and partner, Mike. Got to wait until the snow is gone though. Cheers.

Excellent video. Thanks for the vignette of Griz at the end of the video. Kudos for considering your animal friend, not everyone would be that kind and considerate. You brought Molson's along, so it wasn't a complete loss :-) :-) Stay well & safe ..Cheers

Hey Alexis. Great job out there! Some thing I would make a little different or just adding...I would use something for ground insulation, use saw just a little and then just break the wood (will safe a lot of your energy and teeth on saw),wrap meat products in heavy duty foil (will cook faster),bad idea to have alcohol in cold weather (the fact is that due to vasodilation, the human body begins to cool down faster. Opened pores give off heat, which causes rapid hypothermia),you can use plastic store bags wrapped around your feet inside shoes but do that if you have spare/dry socks...

Just finally got a chance to watch this - great video! I can relate to battery issues in the cold... One "tip" and one suggestion - free and worth every penny... To fold up tarps solo, bring along a couple of small carabiners. Lash two corners of the tarp to a couple of the trees with cordage and the carabiners in the gromets. These act as another set of hands to hold the corners while you shake/fold to them. My suggestion is just a personal habit. I try to keep my pack closed (zipped/buckled) at all times. The only time I leave compartments open is when it is stored or drying out (both cases it's empty). That way if I have to grab it and go for any reason I know it is secure and I'm not going to be scattering gear all over. Also - that wood must have been incredibly dry. That and/or birch bark must really burn (never tried it myself). Both times when you dropped large bundles of what I'd call relatively big kindling on the burning bark I expected it to smother-out - but it burst into flames! My fire laying skills are mediocre at best - if I did that, I'd wipe it out and be starting over. ;-)

Wonderful video! You handled this trip skillfully, responsibly and with good sprit. I've done almost a 1:1 trip, and it's no joke, especially with that wind you had there. I've also had to turn back out of concern for my dog twice this winter, good on you for making the right choice in advance, and also for being upfront about the uneasy feeling you get going in to a trip like this alone. Looking forward to the next one!
