In the latest episode of the Mind Shift podcast, "Morning Routines and Prophetic Words," Erwin and Aaron McManus dive into a range of topics including the optimization of their morning routines as well as some mystical / spiritual experiences they've had - both good and bad. The dialogue ventured through the importance of sleep, the power of rituals over routines, the essence of spirituality in daily life, and the profound impact of personal growth and self-awareness on our lives.
The conversation begins with an emphasis on the value of a consistent sleep schedule and a nighttime routine that eschews screens and incorporates practices like using a sauna and electrolytes to improve sleep quality. The discussion underscores the crucial role of sleep in mental restoration, highlighting the most rejuvenating sleep hours between 10pm and 2am and the benefit of waking up refreshed at an early hour.
A pivotal point in the podcast is the differentiation between routines and rituals. It's suggested that shifting from routines to rituals can better align our daily practices with our goals and mental well-being. This notion extends into a deeper examination of meditation, where engaging with God's word becomes a central ritual for finding peace and guidance.
The dialogue also addresses the importance of integrating spiritual disciplines into one's life, respecting individual personality types and preferences. It challenges the traditional approach to discipleship and spiritual growth, advocating for a more inclusive method that recognizes the unique ways individuals connect with their spirituality and personal growth.
Erwin McManus advocates for embracing one's individuality and discovering personal rhythms that foster a healthy lifestyle. This involves recognizing the unique ways God relates to each person and finding what genuinely works for oneself rather than mimicking others.
The conversation takes a critical view of prophetic words within the Christian context, emphasizing discernment and the potential dangers of emotional manipulation. This leads to a broader discussion on the significance of character over spiritual gifts and the importance of authenticity in spiritual practices.
The podcast concludes with reflections on spirituality and personal growth, emphasizing the value of understanding different perspectives and the importance of living life fully and authentically. Erwin McManus shares insights on the influence of early exposure to science fiction and mythology on his imagination and strategic thinking.
Overall, this episode offers a comprehensive exploration of how daily practices, personal rituals, and a mindful approach to spirituality can significantly enhance one's life. It invites listeners to critically evaluate their routines, embrace their individuality, and pursue a path of personal and spiritual growth that is authentically theirs.

Love this convo. I think the church should put more energy into exploring the usage of spiritual gifts and giving room for people to practice. Just like any discipline, people will get it wrong. No one expects even the greatest basketball player to make every shot. I think the danger is people feeling spiritually superior to others. It will be a challenging road but I think it is worth diving into because it is clearly in the Bible. What IF we were missing out on something God had for us because of either resistance to learning about spiritual gifts or misusing them.

#3 emotional health/unhealth in Christian circles 34:30 … reminds me of Peter Scazzero’s book (EHS). Am thankful Erwin persevered with Jesus and discarded the bad that he encountered (in the church). An encouragement to us all.

Love the topic and the honest & transparent conversation, as always … thanks for sharing. #1 wake up ritual 09:10 I have a morning ritual idea to share, a very short prayer before leaving bed (to begin the day): the Modeh Ani [I am grateful before You, Living & enduring King, for You have graciously & mercifully restored my soul within me. Great is Your faithfulness!!] it’s super short, marvelous, and declarative - a confession if you will, of Who God is, and then just now am thinking of following that up with the Prayer of St. Francis [“make me a channel/instrument of Your peace …”].

#2 morning phone embargo 31:09 no phone in first x minutes to receive the full benefit (Andrew B on Tom B’s podcast - would love Erwin to talk with either of them), Andrew said it was an interruption of “the download” from the night’s “work” in sleep. Not too easy, even my alarm clock is on my phone, but something you’ve inspired me to strive for.

So good … #4 Wonder 52:32 you question all of your assumptions. I love this about Erwin. I think of it as a rigor of being able to separate actual truth from assumed truth. Where are our blind spots? “Can we prove it from first principles: Scripture?” Or is it just our interpretation or projection of Scripture. I think of Copernicus.
