Hi I just watched your YT video, Baseball Card Collecting Basics * A Basic Guide to Collecting Baseball Cards, and thought it was excellent. I had collected for years, until my mid 20's, stopping after becoming increasingly frustrated with all the different sets, and makers, etc. I just started looking into this again and had no idea it was even more complicated now. I pulled out my old baseball cards with my son, who is becoming interested, and started going through them, and realized there are a lot of great cards in here I pulled from packs primarily. I did buy a few vintage cards as well. I have literally tens of thousands of cards that I am going through from my youth, finding a dozen Jeter rookies, Sosa, McGwire, Bonds, etc. My question is, I want to start collecting again, but do it in the manner I did 30 years ago, only sticking with rookies, no sets or packs this time. My thought was to select the best 10-12 rookies from 2022 and buy ten of their cards, and sit on them for 30 years like I did when I was a kid. I plan on doing this every year moving forward. The trouble is, now I don't know which ones to get. I assumed, from your video I should be getting the Topps series cards with e RC designation. These seem to be the true rookie cards, which is what I am after. I'm not really interested in all the shine and sparkle of the different variations unless you have a differing opinion based on what I am trying to accomplish. To accomplish this same goal with these would be unaffordable. I'd appreciate any comment or advice you have, thanks again for the video, I did enjoy it, and am looking forward to watching more. Dave

I really enjoyed the video. Like many I haven’t collected in 20+ years and it’s unbelievable how many different rookie cards come in the same series not just brands or sets. I would be interested in how to or where to send cards to be graded.

Good tutorial. I've been a Collector for years now. I Still have the biggest problem of Identifying SP's. What, in your opinion, is the best way to Identify them? Read the code on the back? Good job. Thanks.
Great video. Thanks for the good info. I just opened a Jumbo hobby of Series 2 while I wait for my Boxes of Update to come in and I got a Sketch Card of Bryce Harper. Did not even know these were a thing. All original 1 of 1 sketches on card. can't remember odds but over thousand. No clue the value but a great treasure to find.
Wow that's an awesome card! I've seen one or two on twitter or instgram but don't know much about them. I would have to look at the pack odds or a checklist. Congrats on that hit!
I'm curious if what you do with the regular base cards you pull when you open a pack? Even the inserts seem like they may be worth little.. from what I am understanding... collecting RC , 1st Bowman, and autograph is the only thing to hold onto... so do people or collectors just throw the other cards away?
I'm just starting out and wondered if you could tell me how you video your segments? Camera on phone? HD video camera on a trip-pod? etc. Thanks for sharing.
Love the video! Want to know what would be your guys' opinion of the top 3 or 5 most collectable/sought after MLB cards are and why if possible! Thanks for sharing! Def enjoyed this one!
Thanks, good suggestion on the 3 to 5 most collectible. That's a tough one, do you want to know 3 to 5 most collectible baseball cards of all time or modern day players (1990-2019)?
@@UpNorthCollectors Modern from 1990 to 2019 would be what I'd like to see. Putting Trout aside or making it a top 4 or 6 because he's one I think most are aware of (not that he should necessarily be taken from the list).
I have to take my hat off to you! You really broke it down to the basics in this video. And you also listened to questions I had! As an old collector from the 90’s recently getting back into the hobby in 2019 things have really changed! Like you said there use to only be base cards and some inserts! Now there’s every color and what not. All that being said what makes the batting bellinger card his true rookie and not the other 3 in the same set? They all came out the same time and in the same set. I know it’s more valuable because of its rarity compared to the others but is that the only reason why?
Also is it true that the “true rookie card” of a player is the card that’s released the year that player is starting out the season on the major league teams roster? Or is that false?
It would really help to know what to buy. I mostly want to collect for my own personal interest not really so I can resell. However everyone wants good cards and rare cards. As someone who literally just got into this, theres so many different sets to buy I just dont know what to get. Where the best places to get them are. Should I buy online. I recently just got a Topps 2020 full collection box.
New subscriber, I really enjoy your video’s. Just opened my first packs since 1991 on Saturday, my 17 year old son, who has never opened a pack of baseball cards really enjoyed the experience. Keep up the great videos! Are you father and son?
That's awesome, I'm glad to hear you opened up some 2019 cards after being out of the hobby for several years. Yes, we are a father and son team and have a blast collecting together. I hope you and your son continue to enjoy the hobby together. Thanks for watching!
I don't really understand sets. When it comes to old cards from the 80s and 90s, is every card made in a certain year in the box set, or are there cards you find in individual packs that would not be in the set? Lots of old cards at a local antique shop and just wondering what to buy.
I used to collect back in the 80s and 90s and just got back into in the last few months. I had a bunch of free time and went through my old collection. There are so many different sets nowadays. Back in the day it’s was just Topps, Donruss, Fleer, Bowman (kinda). Now is see a bunch of different topps. Looks like donruss lost their licensing. I’m just trying to get an idea how it all works now.
So I am getting back into collecting aft being out of it for some years. The question, what is the best database system to use? Seems like there are some many out there, some free and others like Beckett have a fee. I want to see what the market value is as well as have a good way to keep track of all the cards I own.
I live in the UK and have been slowly collecting Topps Baseball cards ever since the Yankees & Red Sox came to London. It's very difficult to buy cards here :(
New subscriber here… love your content… just started collecting few days ago… do you have a type of binder to keep the cards and if you do so do you mind sharing a link to buy it? Thank you so much

I just started collecting and I was curious if you need to know about the pLayers to understand the value. Cause like Pokémon they have specific levels
Great info video. Would be great to know where and how to sell the more valuable cards in a set if you do not have a great local card store. Also do you think there is long term value in these cards or should you sell quickly to capitalize on the commodity value.
Great questions! It is really hard to say on value every player is different. The Hall of Fame players and super stars usually slowly go up in value and stay pretty steady. The young guys are more risky and those might be the cards you want to sell quickly while they are hot. They can turn into the next Mike Trout or Derek Jeter but the chances of that are about 1%. Thanks for watching and I hope that helps a little bit?
I was going through my stuff that I used in the past and I found my baseball card collections. And I found a Mookie Betts rookie card with a blue border. And I found this Kole Calhoun 2016 topps future card with a normal border color. But the back of the card feels different from the other cards and it says 99/99on the back. Also the topps sign on the front has a weird looking t which is long. What type of card is this???
How about a "flow chart" that shows what a ball player can have. That is rookie base then three other R/C possible, a rookie first game, All Star card, then? You could explain all the possible parallels. This was a good help but you had to change player. The flow chart would show all the card possibilities and not show a particular player.
@@UpNorthCollectors Since collecting from the 90's but then stopped. We see new brands out there like Topps, Penini, and others. They are not all the same and can be confusing to distinguish. Some cards don't even say RC on the cards. But I still look at the back of the card to see the stats and see if it is a RC or not.
I thought 1st Bowman’s were the true rookie. As they are normally out a year prior. Topps is just the only company that has the copyright to the RC logo. More of a question than a statement. I could easily be wrong. Lol
@@canadianmade3701 I got ya bud yeah usually the first is the first appearance before the season starts and rc us when the season starts if that makes sense lol
Usually in baseball products like: Topps Series 1 & 2, Chorme, Allen & Ginter, Topps Heritage, Topps Update and Bowman. I hope that helps a little bit?
I've been collecting cards since 1960 and a dealer since 1978. I also wrote a book on rookie cards. Where in the hell did the term "true rookie card" come from. A rookie card is the first card of a particular player. It doesn't matter the manufacturer. Calling the Topps card the true rookie card is absurd. Starting in 1981 several companies issued traded or updated sets. These cards are rookie cards but so are the cards issued the next year from the different companies. An example is the 1986 Topps Traded Barry Bonds and the 1987 Topps Barry Bonds. They are both rookie cards.
Topps goes overboard with the RC Logo. Rookie debut or all star are not Rookie cards. 2018 chrome update went back and gave the key rookies another RC.
I think it is very confusing to new collectors that they put the RC logo Series 1 & 2 and then would put the same player in Update and put the RC logo on that card. I like the RC logo but if it gets over used it can cause confusion. Thanks for watching!

How about a "flow chart" that shows what a ball player can have. That is rookie base then three other R/C possible, a rookie first game, All Star card, then? You could explain all the possible parallels. This was a good help but you had to change player. The flow chart would show all the card possibilities and not show a particular player.
What's meant by a true rookie card? For example Barry Bonds has got several rookie cards, which one is a true rookie card?

Great, I hope it helps, let us know what else you would like us to talk about regarding sports cards. Thanks!
@@UpNorthCollectors Since collecting from the 90's but then stopped. We see new brands out there like Topps, Penini, and others. They are not all the same and can be confusing to distinguish. Some cards don't even say RC on the cards. But I still look at the back of the card to see the stats and see if it is a RC or not.
very true, it is confusing and sometimes the stats are not on the back of the cards like they were in the 80s and 90s.
Im new to the game....thanks
I still think The Montreal Expos are the shoe in to win the 2019 World Series over The Seattle Pilots.
Next time could you explain, blaster box, hobby box, etc. Thanks.
We could try to do that as well, that's a good question, thank you for your suggestion and thanks for watching!
What are the best packs to buy for beginners?
Topps Series 1 and Series 2. Lots of veterans and rookies. Also can get parallels and autographs.
Great vid
Thanks and thanks for watching!
do base cards ever end up being worth anything?
I thought 1st Bowman’s were the true rookie. As they are normally out a year prior.
Topps is just the only company that has the copyright to the RC logo.
More of a question than a statement. I could easily be wrong. Lol
Nope bowman first is the 1st appearance of that player period and a true rc is the player wearing the mlb teams jersey they were drafted to
Well Vlady Jrs 1st Bowman is in his mlb jersey. So I’m confused.
@@canadianmade3701 I got ya bud yeah usually the first is the first appearance before the season starts and rc us when the season starts if that makes sense lol
Also sorry just tryna help didn't mean for the confusion
RageOonzCardBreaks Games&Tunez ahhh that makes sense
Thanks. Appreciate the help.
Waaay too many options these days for my old a$$ lol
what products are the best
Thank you
I have a 2016 rookie tatis boman
Remember when you just tried to get a good rookie card
Ah yes, I too like to enjoy a nice piece of bologna every once in a while.
@@UpNorthCollectors It is so confusing. Vlad alone has 3 Topps RC that really aren't his true rookie.
First
Congrats! thanks for watching!
