This video ended up being a long one, I recommend watching it at 1.5 speed. Also, feel free to ask me questions here in the comments and I will make sure to get back to you (I may have missed a few things). Thanks for watching everyone!!
Hands down the best video showing how to set up, use and clean HVLP sprayers. Wagner and HomeRight ought to send him free sprayers cause he sure made them look good.
I purchased a Home Right about a year ago but have not used it yet. Now that you posted this excellent video, I think I have the confidence to try it. Thanks
Control and repeatability are key with any paint project. I do not recommend pouring unused paint back into the original container as you are now mixing thinned with thick paint to produce a somewhat thinned paint. Once you find out what dilution works, stick with it. Keep the thinned paint in a separate container and then you can thin more to always have the same dilution. Granted as the original paint ages it will get thicker and require more thinning, but for a specific project you can control the process from start to finish and then readjust with the next project. Thanks for the comparison.
A simple funnel with a small hole can help here. When you find a sprayable thickness of paint that takes, let's say, 8 seconds to drain from the small funnel, you can always calibrate the thickness.
That’s the best comparison/ demonstration video I’ve seen in all of RUclips! Awesome job! I feel like I can skip the instructions when I buy mine. Thanks a million!
I have both of these except my Wagner is flexio 5000. The Wagner has a much better finish. Howright finish was a bit bumpy. My Wagner is great for the multiple projects I do. I actually bought a separate hand gun with container for about $30. I was able to switch between colors quickly. Cleanup is also hands down the Wagner. Love it.
I really enjoyed the video. I liked the pros and cons for both. However HomeRight is significantly more wallet friendly. That made up my mind in the end. 😀
Don't know if its been mentioned but to help with the spitting at the start of spraying on the wagner pull the trigger in slightly to kick in the turbine then after 3 or 4 seconds pull the trigger in fully to release the paint.....I found this helps. Also diluting the paint is key to a good finish.... its just trial and error but I was diluting up to 50%
Yes, slightly pulling the trigger certainly helps but I do still recommend starting your spray off the surface you are painting just to be safe. Thanks for watching!
I bought the Homeright. It has a lot of overspray, mediocre finish, and is a royal pain to clean. If you let the paint get too low in the container, it spits globs of paint. I don't know if the Wagner is any better, but it really can't be much worse. I am returning my Homeright and am just going to stick with my compressor driven HVLP. Thanks for the video.
both of these sprayers suffer from the same problem which is that neither have a thumb switch to activate the motor. on these machines when you press the trigger it will do two things (activate the motor and allow the paint to flow at the same time). when you press the trigger it will take time for the motor to spin up and the paint that comes through during that time will be at a much lower velocity than it needs to be causing all sorts of splatter problems. with separate controls you can have the motor at full speed with the paint flow off, and then when you trigger the paint flow it will be coming out at full speed. almost no one talks about this but its absolutely vital if you want to actually get any amount of work done without going back to fix mistakes! the previous version of the wagner flexio had the thumb switch for the motor, i have done hundreds of hours of emulsion work with it and i wont use any other sprayer.
Thank you for making this video. I know it’s older but can you please tell me which model is heavier? I tried the Graco handheld airless sprayer and just picking it up made my carpal tunnel start in. Also, could you have just sprayed the water into the sink when you were cleaning the Homeright or would you get overspray everywhere?
Excellent video!! Lots of good and useful info on the units and the comparison side-by-side of a complete job was totally relevant. So many people could take a lesson from you on review videos.
I couldn’t agree more! He did an EXCELLENT job with this!! I was on the fence about which sprayer to buy and even whether buying one at all would be worth it to me! But, now, I’m definitely buying the Homeright due it’s much lower price point!
I have the Earlex/HomeRight Super Finish Max and was hoping that it would win hands down but it didn't. I do agree with you 100% in that the Earlex/HomeRight Super Finish Max is a pain to clean and I can now see that the Wagner Flexio 590 is a breeze to clean relative to the Earlex/HomeRight. Very good review.
Thanks Bob, glad you liked the review! It is a pain how the HR is cleaned, but they do have the cleaning flush kit if that helps - i don't have it though. Thanks for watching!
Thank you for this video. I painted all my baseboards and wondered why it was bumpy. I used the bigger sprayer instead of the smaller fine spray one. SMH! oh well. Wish I watched this video first because this is literally all I needed to watch. Gonna sand then and redo them. Thanks for the video!
Since the Wagner is much easier to clean and wanted the variable speed turbine for added flexibility. Despite the Wagner having a higher pitched motor, it seems quieter. So I’m going with the Wagner Flexio 3500.
Excellent, thank you! Going to use the Wagner for water based poly. Do I actually need to thin it down? Have you done poly through that without thinning?
I have found this wagner needs to be cleaned frequently for a consistent operation. The heater air from the motor seems to make the paint dry on the nozzle and then it spits and throws clumps of paint.
Maybe it comes out faster of the HomeRight.... and maybe too fast? Is it the idea to spray as much paint as possible as fast as possible? I own the Wagner 590 and I'm happy with it.... but I haven't tested it against the HomeRight.
I have a bungalow with a pebble-dash finish that needs painting. - virtually impossible with a roller or brush. Can I use the Wagner for masonry paint and will it stand up to painting outside walls? Also would I need to water down the paint? I was looking at airless sprayers and they seem too complicated for my needs - especially priming and cleaning and wotnot. Too much hassle. But the Wagner seems brilliant. Great informative video by the way.
Question, why didn’t you apply poly paint already on the. Furniture. Why the need to apply after paint. Isn’t extra work? I understand the poly if was apply on the raw wood. Please let me know. Than you sir.
Notice the test run of Flexio at 14:00 vs HR Super at 21:15. Flexio seems to spit out paint at the start while HR Super doesn’t. That’s probably why you said it’s easier to spray with HR than Flexio.
True, both can spit but the Wagner always does when you start and I guess since I am aware I just begin spraying off the edges every time! thanks for watching!
@@FurnitureFlippa You paint with Wagner badly. You have to press the trigger gently so that the engine starts and then squeeze the trigger all the way.
Barely press the trigger to start the airflow without letting the paint getting out immediately. Once air runs at full speed, press the trigger fully. You can start in the middle (bad practice but sometimes you are out of other options), just start moving the gun before you start spraying.
thank you for doing this review and direct comparison! I am curious about what you do with the sprayers between coats - I had an issue where my wagner sprayer just clogged right up if paint sat and dried, even for a small amount of time. do you do anything to prevent this? Thanks, again!
I will put tape over the tip, but I won't let the sprayer sit overnight. I will go in every so often and spray the gun to make sure it doesn't clog just on a piece of cardboard. Thank you so much for watching!
Have you tried spraying without thinning, I have sprayed countless quarts of SW Emerald unthinned with my Homeright with exceptional results and I don’t get the cleaning comments on the Homeright, super easy to clean no harder than my other sprayers?
Hi. I'm thinking of purchasing a Graco 17a466 truecoat 360 DS Paint Sprayer or the Graco Ruecoat 360DS Paint Sprayer. I loved how you reviewed Homeright & the Flexio... Just curious to know how you feel about the Graco...😊
I noticed the Wagner has two spray nozzles and triggers. One is for bigger projects, and the other for finer detail jobs. That would explain the coverage issues. Which one was used for the 590 Wagner? I wonder if the larger canister and trigger would outperform the home right.
A brush should be better for the penetration and/or adhesion. Thus when painting a not too large outside fence (or porous material), brush could be the best. Or the roller if you care about the surface or paint speed. But! Whenever you wish to have a perfect final surface quality then there is usually no other option then spraying. Ie. all inside doors, their frames. Furniture. Car or motorcycle parts... Anytime when you paint a larger flat surface spraying is probably preferable as any imperfections are visible. Though, there are certain laquers (eg. shellac) or paints where you can get a perfect result even with some brushing or rolling technology. It has been used originally in the past. You may need to arrange the surface eg. horizontally in order to let the paint to flow to a flat surface. Basically, it is a process or technology which is not easily repeatable. You may need to experiment with the laquer, brush type and style. It will slow you down. Eg. my inside doors and frames are sprayed but the window frames were brushed and/or rolled. Both by the professionals.
Adding more water usually helps thick paints spray better. This old behr paint was thick, I used Fusion paint a few days later and it came out like butter. Highly recommend Fusion mineral paints in the wagner.
I don't like the idea that if I am spraying up then need to spray down ... I have to take off the paint jar and turn the tube. You would think it would have a weighted tube so it would do that for you. Come on Wagner and others think about what your making. LOL Wondering if the dirty filter on the Wagner is cutting down the flow. It sure looks weak on the spraying. He should have poured the leftover paint right into the other sprayer. Would have not been a different mix as he thinned it again and that could have made the paint flow better. He also shouldn't be pouring paint down the drain. Wash them outside. Other than that....... Great video for info.
Very informative. Well done, including the instructions for cleaning your tools. Albeit, I seriously suggest applying the same level of cleanliness to your sink. Pretty gross, man.
@@FurnitureFlippa okay but that still doesn’t tell me the size. I just ordered a homeright and I think I will use the 1.5 mm tip as I have heard on other videos that the Wagner 1.4 mm tip is the best size for fine finishing with paint. Perhaps the homeright felt like a tougher finish to you because of the 2mm size.
You don’t need to put water in paint with Wagner. Flexible 590 it s for unthinned paint but homeright designed for thinning paint.you should compare Wagner 350 with Homeright Super finish
I'm a novice and need to paint entire walls and ceilings in a new house quickly. Would the homeright be better than the wagner for that? I'm also debating just using an 18" roller...
I'm still waiting for mines from Amazon but I've own a small gun like this before. My personal advise is to just use the gun to do corners, trims and door but use a roller for doing big areas. It will be too much stopping and going to refill the small cup to do big area. I was thinking if the gun would work without the cup, if it does many you could make a custom hose and run it directly from the paint can.
@@kirkbrown2147 Thanks, that all makes sense, but ultimately, my wife convinced me to just throw enough money at the problem and have painters do the whole house. I still might get a cheap sprayer for small diy projects.
@@Phrancis5 Smart choice. I primed a small 7’x13’ room with the home right and it was a lot work climbing a ladder to get to the top of the wall as you need to be around 12 inch’s away from the area that needs to be painted. Also having to refill the container was a pain. I ended up rolling the paint on with an 18 inch roller it was a lot less work.
Hi there! I’m still a little confused when it comes down to thinning out paint. How much water would you recommend for 16oz of paint using the home right ?
curiously I noticed after you sprayed and were ready to clean the gun, you poured the paint back into the original container, Wouldn't that mess up the original container as the gun paint has already been thinned? Good video. I'm leaning towards the Wagner. But as another reviewer said, it's the same company.
Yes it would be different, but I didn't add as much the second time and made sure to get the same consistency. And yes funny they are the same company!
Wagner bought out homeright.. but it is still homeright's original design. So technically not the same company designed it.. Wagner just saw them as getting too big so bought them out.
On the Wagner witch gun do you use for polycrylic and how do you set it up? I am try to clear a table top but am having trouble getting a nice smooth coat with the manual techniques. Between coats do you take everything apart and clean to prevent clogging from the polycrylic drying. Sorry for all the questions but this table top has been such a pain!
I do the same with polycrylic as I do with the water-based poly i used in this video, polycrylic is water-based polyurethane. 10% water thinned. I like the Wagner for spraying it because of the quick cleaning process. But I do not clean between coats unless I am waiting overnight. I will put a piece of tape on tip between coats during the day. I have a blog post with some more info you can see here: furnitureflippa.com/can-you-spray-polycrylic-with-a-spray-gun/
yes you can, some paints will require more watering than others. Add 10% water, if not enough add another 10%... I have added anywhere from 20-30% water to my thick paints while spraying before.
Hi thanks for the Video, I feel that people are not pushing these Airless painters to the limit, what are they like using Varnish (Solvent-based) Plastic dip Rustoleum Car paint Hammerright Everyone always plays it safe and uses water-based products yet the Wagner Boast that with a change of a gun you can paint metal and varnish No one wants a $200 one-trick pony. well the Wagner even boasts a truck bed liner with a 630w machine and an ispray gun. be nice to see what gun can push the limits for hobby and DIY Thanks for this starter video
Yes you can, polycrylic is waterbased poly, so follow the same steps by adding 10% water. Blue is the recommended tip for polyurethanes/finishes/stains.
@@FurnitureFlippa I noticed in another video you use the same tip as you use for chalk paint? I really don’t want to have to use the blue if it works for you with the green. Thanks for responding. We appreciate your videos.

@@callan3319 depends how professional of a job you are looking to have done. I don't think these sprayers are what a pro-level cabinet painter would ever use. But if I were to choose what I would use to paint cabinets I would go with the wagner because of the speed difference.
I am sure it can handle it. But if you are painting cabinets and whatnot keep in mind the homeright may not always give the cleanest finish. This only matters if you really want a professional-looking finish. Good luck!
@@FurnitureFlippa I don't have budget for expensive HVLP sprayer: I think you suggest Wagner Flexio 590 for cabinets because gives better finish. Thank you for your feedback.
@@ADESIGNMODELING Yes, in this video I did get a smoother finish with the homeright! I would use my homeright on cabinets if I was to choose one of my sprayers.
I noticed you sprayed primer from a can instead of through the spray gun. Does primer not work well in the sprayers? Also can you use waterborne alkyd paint in these sprayers is thinned or would you get orange peel look? Thank you
I have the wagner. U can use primer but some primers, like zinsser bullseye 123, are a lot thicker so will need more water. He probably used the spray can for convenience. Some of the alkyd paints I've seen don't give any instructions on thinning with water so would only look at brands that give these instructions on the tin.
I believe the width you are talking about is controlled with the flow dial on the homeright, so more paint, and a wider spray. The Wagner you can't really control the width, you can try increasing the amount of paint but I find it really comes out based on the thickness of the product. You can use the other nozzle on the wagner and it controls the width, you just move the red piece back and fourth.
@@FurnitureFlippa Thanks. Theoretically when the spray is made wider, the coating will be thinner if the volume stays the same. So it does make sense to turn up the flow in order to set it wider.
Would you say a fair conclusion is the HomeRight is better for bigger projects since it sprays faster? The Flexio looked to do a superior job when you showed the close images. Thank you for taking the time for producing such a comprehensive video. Well done!
I think that would be fair to say! However, I just sprayed fusion recently with the wagner with some water and it sprayed super fast! Better quality paints likely spray easier, so that is something to consider?
I kind of bounced around through the video... Did you sand between coats at all? I have watched some other tubers that sanded between for a smoother finish with the homeright... The other thing I saw in other videos was that they for sure had to adjust the paint volume lower with the homeright as well.
I do in any other project, but for this, I wanted to see how each would spray. I can sand anything smooth, I was testing performance to be able to compare.

Very long video! But I hope the information is helpful. Thanks for watching!
Base on the videos I've watched, they recommend 5-10%. It has a more even finish according to the videos I've watched.
curiously I noticed after you sprayed and were ready to clean the gun, you poured the paint back into the original container, Wouldn't that mess up the original container as the gun paint has already been thinned?
Have you sprayed primer from one of those and what is your thoughts on that?
Home right looks better built? Let’s see the preforms!
How are you bro ?I want to buy the blue product, but I live outside the United States of America??
That Was Good ,But I Think I Like The WAGNER BEST
I have a blog post with some more info you can see here:
furnitureflippa.com/can-you-spray-polycrylic-with-a-spray-gun/
Why not use a Graco, you don’t have to thin the paint?
Wagner was great on my fence poor on wall paint
Hi there which gun do you recommend.
Just bought it and excited to use it but a little apprehensive
You got this! Just a bit of practice and you'll be spraying like a pro
Thanks for this great information!
Hi mate , can I use duluxe wall paint with Wagner ? They are thick paints so I don't know if they are ok for that ? Thanks
yes you can, some paints will require more watering than others. Add 10% water, if not enough add another 10%... I have added anywhere from 20-30% water to my thick paints while spraying before.
Excellent well done review.
Hi thanks for the Video, I feel that people are not pushing these Airless painters to the limit, what are they like using
Varnish (Solvent-based)
Plastic dip
Rustoleum
Car paint
Hammerright
Everyone always plays it safe and uses water-based products yet the Wagner Boast that with a change of a gun you can paint metal and varnish
No one wants a $200 one-trick pony. well the Wagner even boasts a truck bed liner with a 630w machine and an ispray gun. be nice to see what gun can push the limits for hobby and DIY
Thanks for this starter video
These are HVLP tools, not airless. It's a very different technology.
@@SamtheFinishingMan fully get your statement but items need to be push to make them better as the makers only push a basic option
Great video. Could I use poly crylic with the home right and if so what tip?
Yes you can, polycrylic is waterbased poly, so follow the same steps by adding 10% water. Blue is the recommended tip for polyurethanes/finishes/stains.
@@FurnitureFlippa I noticed in another video you use the same tip as you use for chalk paint? I really don’t want to have to use the blue if it works for you with the green. Thanks for responding. We appreciate your videos.
Just bought the homeright based on your review. I hope I did it right for your affiliate program.
Thank you so much! I appreciate you supporting the channel, I checked it out and it worked. I wish you luck with the homeright!!
Can you upload how to paint over already stained kitch cabinet to white shining paint? Blush vs spray etc...
I would paint cabinets but I don't have wooden cabinets! If I ever flip a house I will definitely do it though! haha
@@FurnitureFlippa hi which spray gun do you recommend for cabinet thx
@@callan3319 depends how professional of a job you are looking to have done. I don't think these sprayers are what a pro-level cabinet painter would ever use. But if I were to choose what I would use to paint cabinets I would go with the wagner because of the speed difference.
I have kitchen size probably 6-8 gallon. Do you think Homeright can handle this size of kitchen ?
Excellent video. Thank you. Liked 👍 subscribed 👍
Thanks for the demo 😀👍
No prob! Thanks for watching!
@@FurnitureFlippa I will give you a text if I have a ? Thanks you
Nice review! and comparo… THX!
Can you tell me in your opinion... the best filler to use to replace a small area of veneer?
Well depends on size, but I would likely use bondo if painting.
@@FurnitureFlippa it's pretty small... maybe quarter size at best!! Thank you
@@tonipope3164 you can get these little tubes of epoxy putty that could work no problem!
Can I use these sprayers to paint my car?
nope, not recommended for cars
Thank You for Your Tutorial!
Great video
So how does that width lever work?
I believe the width you are talking about is controlled with the flow dial on the homeright, so more paint, and a wider spray. The Wagner you can't really control the width, you can try increasing the amount of paint but I find it really comes out based on the thickness of the product. You can use the other nozzle on the wagner and it controls the width, you just move the red piece back and fourth.
@@FurnitureFlippa Thanks. Theoretically when the spray is made wider, the coating will be thinner if the volume stays the same. So it does make sense to turn up the flow in order to set it wider.
can you use on cars?
Excellent video!
Excellent video well done
Do you use paint pot liners?
nope! Would prob be a good idea though
Dont forget he didn't use the larger nozzle made for larger jobs
A lav mic to pick up your speech without the reverb would not have gone amiss.
I can sand anything smooth, I was testing performance to be able to compare.
to me it reminds me a little of how an airbrush works.
great video thank you!
Thanks for the video!!
No problem! Thanks for watching
