    I appreciate and enjoy your commentary. I like the fact that you use time in your videos to actually explain what it is that you are trying to do along with the reason for doing so. I make that remark because I watch a number of 'building' in the forest videos and there are some 'RUclipsrs' that say very little - a few say nothing at all - while they all show what they are doing. Please keep up your informative and entertaining productions. Thank you!

    The great thing about cast iron is that it retains the heat. I would suggest you get the cast iron skillet 'screaming' hot. Take it off the heat, cover the bottom of the pan with oil, then the eggs and let the heat of the skillet cook the eggs. I really believe your eggs were sticking, because you didn't have enough oil.
    The fort is looking awesome. Thanks for the effort to bring us along.

    Long time soaked rocks can explode when exposed to high heat

    • @drive7
      @drive7 3 года назад +11

      Yes, that was my first thought. We used to build fires on a rocky beach by the river when I was a kid and practically every stone beneath would explode with incredible force. Someone would usually get at least mildly injured.

    I thought you shouldn't use rocks from the water for anything fire related because if they get too hot they can explode

    • @josephallen19
      @josephallen19  3 года назад +29

      yes, some certainly can. Many types of rocks, including these are fine.
      Its only happened once to me, it was with river rocks, boosh and I got very lucky that day.

    • @JonasTheLundh
      @JonasTheLundh 3 года назад +2

      They certainly can, but it varies depending on the kind of rock and the amount of water it can absorb.
      Shale for instance can absorb a lot of water and is very prone to cracking/exploding when heated.
      Stuff like granite, though, not as much.

    • @gr6914
      @gr6914 3 года назад

      I agree with it! never thought of it because I've never heated rocks that fast... not for use in a pit of place anyways. I mean yeah you don't want to but a wet piece of slate on the fire to heat to cook fish in an hour...

    • @angelicupstart23
      @angelicupstart23 3 года назад +3

      Ummm. That was limestone, not granite. Limestone is porous as hell, no chance that it isn’t waterlogged. Also, the rock that was already split in your fire pit, what the hell do you think happened to that one?

    Hey Joe. The fort is coming along with lots of potential. TA Outdoors did something cool (Building a Viking House | 10 Day Bushcraft Shelter Build @5:55) where they dug a shallow trench and lined it with rocks. A 30 X 15 inch-ish trench for a firepit with your rocks on the bottom and all 4 sides would be really cool.

    After a couple of small fires to season and dry out those rocks they are going to make a great heat sink and radiator for winter. Get a few more and you could even build a primitive oven. Great addition to Fort Joe.

    Before you started talking about Doug, I was thinking the same thing. It's time for a Doug and Joe camping trip, maybe a three nighter, not an overnighter. Haven't seen the last one Doug posted, I will make sure he get's the message. ; ) LOL

    Didn’t see any of Joe’s videos during Covid. Certainly interesting to read many comments giving opinions and advice. And in spite of it, he seems to be able to put out great content. He obviously does something right. If you haven’t seen them, go back to the beginning when he lived in the city…
