      Good call, I just made the same move -- was considering upgrading from XT4 to XH2s when I realized i could get an S5II body for $1400 b-stock from B&H, then I also got the 18mm and 50mm 1.8 primes all for about $2600 with tax and everything. Should be able to recoup most of that cost selling off my XT4 and a few lenses and I'll have a much more capable full frame setup with better IBIS, reliable autofocus, 6k open gate, 180 shutter, vector scopes, better ergonomics and a bunch of other features that will really up my productions. Only thing I'll miss with Fuji is the film sims for photography but I can load a set of phantom luts onto the S5II for $80 and have a similar experience! We are blessed to be creators in this time!

    • @jonathanscheurich

      @@GrantEllman 100% agree on that. I also got the phantom luts for the lumix to use in photography vlog-Lut-mode, to get pleasing straight out of cam jpegs. However they are not even close to what I got with the film recipes from Fuji x-weekly. The recipes also came with specific white balance settings to really get close to the film look.
      Not happy with my straight out of cam jpeg workflow with the s5ii at the moment.
      However the phantom luts just work great for video. Literally looks like cinema.
      Good choice with the 18mm! I got the 16-28 and 28-70 both 2.8 as well as the 35 1.8.
      I use the 16-28 90% of the time. Really enjoying the wide angle on full frame, gives me Terrence Malick vibes 😁 greetings from Bali 👋

    Nicccee video and breakdown! Love it.
    I did the same, except with a Sony. Shot Fujifilm for 10 years then got a Sony A7iii for an awesome price and wow... was completely blown away by the eye autofocus, the full frame bokeh for portrait shots, the sharpness and the nearly 3x longer battery life. Made me switch. I'd try a S5ii but at this point the Sony autofocus is so godlike it's changed how I shoot, now all I have to do is focus on composition because I know the autofocus is going to get the eye perfectly every time. Wish my current Sony A7c had better ibis for vlogging but no camera is perfect. I use the DJI RS3 for client work.

  • @SonofaFritzFilms
    @SonofaFritzFilms Год назад +5

    Thanks so much for this video! Currently own a GH5S and a micro 4/3 system I’m looking to retire, and the Fujifilm X100V got me really into their system. I’m struggling to decide between three cameras as IBIS, Open Gate, and true hybrid use between photo and video are my main criteria, so I’m between the S5IIX and XH2S for client work, and then the X-S20 as a budget option/more personal use camera and one to help me invest in some fuji glass.
    I’d love to stick with just Fuji and one ecosystem, but I rented an S5IIX and the menu system/wheel for the menu felt like home to me as it’s much like my GH5S, and I was also blown away by the autofocus as I used it for photos. They also have a solid promotion now heavily discounting two lenses when purchasing the camera, which makes the base price of the XH2S tough to swallow.
    Anyway, sorry for the wall of text, but appreciate your insight on the pros and cons of the S5II, definitely more food for thought as I make moves to a new system.

    • @Iamtongue

    • @SonofaFritzFilms
      @SonofaFritzFilms Год назад

      @@Iamtongue it’s such a nice discount indeed! I don’t see the camera itself getting discounted with how high in demand it is but I think for right now the X-S20 fits my needs and most importantly my budget best, so I’m gonna most likely start with that and see how pricing between the XH2S and the S5IIX pan out over time.
      I also own a Sigma 18-35 f/1.8 EF Mount, so I can adapt to either system no matter what I choose and it’ll give me a nice lens to get things going.

    Hi Tongue, you misunderstood how LUTs for stills are supposed to work. They're not applied to the raw but to the JPGs. The exposure you saw would have been the same in the JPGs. Learned that on the SOOC workshop tour from @krolopgerst
    It's basically like with Fuji, treat the LUTs like film Simulations and there's no more need to edit them. Baked in LUTs in video work the same, you don't get a log file but a graded file already.

    The change of exposure when half pressing the shutter isn't showing you what it thinks your exposure should be, its boosting the contrast for auto-focus. It's a hold over from the DFD system of the older contrast detect auto-focus. Seeing as the new phase detect system is a hybrid phase and contrast detect system that still leverages DFD I assume its something they can't remove just yet. It's not a feature its a compromise that being said as someone who's shot Lumix for over 6 years, you do just get used to it. You set your exposure and then get focus, I can see it being annoying if not used to it and if you like to hold down the shutter for continuous burst, just remember that you set your exposure well before and trust in your skill!

      Apparently Lumix purposely did this slow start to protect battery life. The older cameras went into more of a light sleep for quick turn on but people complained their batteries were dying when sitting on the shelf in the camera. So now Lumix allows the camera to pretty much completely turn off when it hasn't been turned on for awhile. Thats why its a quick turn on if you just switched it off. I personally haven't had any issues with my past cameras and dying battery and I also always charge my batteries before a shoot so I do wish Lumix would allow me to change the settings so it would be like how it was on the S5 with a near instant turn on.

      You may have that issue with raw files maybe because you shoot real-time lut with v-log profile? Try to apply phantom luts on standard, cinelikeD or another picture profile (you can do it via „my photo style” option) - then raw should have the same exposure as jpegs, only colors will be different. And second thing - v-log profile in photography have lower dynamic range than other profiles, so It’s only useful when you shoot jpegs.

      Its not constant preview hes talking about. It boosts exposure when auto-focusing, regardless of constant preview setting. All lumix cameras have done this for years. It's a hold over from the contrast detect autofocus. The camera boosts the exposure to create more contrast so it can be more effective with the focus when half pressing the shutter, as the new phase detect is a hybrid that still uses the DFD system, my guess is they can't remove that function just yet.

      The S5ii is a killer in low light with it's dual native iso...

      You could also consider a speedbooster. I've been shooting on Canon FD FF with my X-T3 on a Viltrox speedbooster. The added stop of light makes a huge difference.

    Fuji added some of these things in their new GFX camera… would be nice for them to give us some of them with the new newer cameras with a firmware since it’s the same processor and most of us are not in that market.

      @@Iamtongue same with my X-S20…. Sony can screw its customers because of their class leading Autofocus 😂

    Nice review....but...phantom luts for photo bro? Nah...at least you shot your pics in V-log...and believe me, you don´t want to 😅 They´re intended only for video bro. If you shoot photos in v-log you´re gonna have some issues, like you had. That´s the reason this camera can be setted differently by photos and videos, with independent color spaces and luts to apply.

      Sure you can do that, but all I would just like to see what my photos look like with the luts for straight out of camera jpeg. This is something that I am use to with my Fujifilm and their film simulation.
