So the story about the song (if you wish to know the context) is that a friend of Tool was sentenced to a jail-term for possession of Pot. But a few months later there was a news story where the judge that sentenced him was caught using opiates (morphine i believe) illegally, but all the judge got was a slap on the wrist and a story about what a thought time he had been going through framing the judge as a victim rather than a criminal.
So the song is about the hypocrisy of how someone in power can get away with possession of a much more dangerous drug, with reference to the pot calling the kettle black (but its so bad he just pissed all over his kettle)
Some of the lyrics can be a little hard to follow.
Weeping shades of cozened indigo, Got lemon juice up in your eye?
Cozened means something intended to trick or decieve. So basically its someone who is using lemon juice to produce fake tears for the camera's and telling the sob story of why its ok for the judge to use heroin cause reasons:P

First of all, I'm happy to see you've discovered the greatest living band. One suggestion: you might consider printing off lyrics or having them pulled up on another device or whatever to have them right on front of you while you're reacting. You shouldn't necessarily need to read them as you're listening to each song, but just to have easier and faster access to them when you pause to review them.
My vote for your next Tool track is "The Grudge', 'Laturalus', or 'Vicarious'. Get ready to ride the spiral 🌀

There is a saying; "the pot calling the kettle black" that knowing would help frame this song's meaning. This saying, which personifies kitchenware in order to make a point about hypocrisy, means "to criticize someone for a fault you also possess."
I think one reason I, and by extension the whole Tool Army and more, enjoy seeing Tool reaction videos so much is because watching that transition between "Over thinking, over analyzing..." the song for views into the bright eyed glow as you begin to "spiral out" with the often euphoric FEELING of "weaving 'round each new experience" and "Finding beauty in the dissonance" is just so satisfying in it's inevitability. Personally, as interesting and funny and serious and meaningful as it can be, i am not here to hear your interperatations but to ride the genuinely invoked emotional waves with you.
It is an almost universal reaction to this band reguardless of who it is or how they come to listen to Tool so, although there are definitely preffered ways to organise the songs; i.e the holy gift etc., you really do not need to concern yourself too much with these things for youtube videos as it is best to immerse yourself in the experiance rather than remain conscious of being entertaining for your audience. "Keep going".
    Enjoy ;)

Maynard J Keenan is the master of analogy. A master of societal mirroring. The perfectionist nature of every member in this project is maddening. So many bands in the world write a great hook and develop a song around it. TOOL writes a meaningful and deep concept, and then using a mastery of poetic language arts, builds a mosaic of hooks and tapestry of meanings, creating in every song a vehicle of thought provocation. EVERY song is cathartic. Every song is a masterpiece. Every song is authentic. Every song is unique and meaningfully different. And yet also, every song is INSTANTLY recognizable as TOOL. Every time you play a song again, it is like hearing it again for the first time. No matter how many times you hear any one song, you will hear something you did not hear previous. This is the unwritten, unspoken contract that TOOL has with its fans. Every song is given it's full consideration. TOOL does not put 'filler' tracks in any album. Every note is thought through ... Imagine a book of knowledge that is forbidden but must be preserved, so the monks are tasked with encoding the entire volume of the forbidden library. The stories will read as mundane but accepted dogma to the uninitiated, unless you are gifted the cypher. This is the level of attention to detail I am trying to ascribe to TOOL's body of work. Sorry just playing on paper here. It's fun to talk about this band using language that most would call hyperbole ... until it's not. LOL

There's an undeniable underlying 'Toolness' to everything, though also a distinct evolution in their music, so worth taking a bite from a bit of everything imo. Maynard is an absolute genius level wordsmith, and there's a million things at once that can often be drawn from the lyrics. All 4 members are insane masters of their craft. Perhaps a bit of clarity on the lyrics about the house of cards and that area:
"Soapbox house of cards and glass so
Don't go tossin' your stones around"
Maynard starts with "soapbox", recalling speaking while standing on a wooden soapbox for attention allowing one to literally stand above a crowd and project your voice leading to the current turn of phrase that someone is "standing on a soapbox" when they are grandstanding about something. He then moves to "house of cards and glass," as a "house of cards" is an expression sometimes used to describe an very shaky or unsteady thing, something with the likelihood to come falling down at the slightest bump or gust of wind. He then pulls in the glass he had just mentioned with "don't go tossin' your stones around" to bring to mind the admonition that "those in glass houses should not throw stones," and further reinforces the point of the flimsiness of the "house of cards and glass" and how throwing stones from within could easily cause its destruction. It all ties in with the greater message of aggressively confronting the hypocrite/s to whom this song is directed.
Also, the title, "the Pot," and the repeated lyric "piss all over my black kettle" is something Maynard is drawing together purposefully. Together, their inclusion is a proverbial idiom to a hypocrite... "If that isn't the pot calling the kettle black." en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_pot_calling_the_kettle_black

First time I saw them they headlined the 1996 Lollapalooza tour. Saw a kid walk into a mosh pit and 30 seconds later come out spitting out a tooth!
Anyway, I'm here to see you react to one of my favorite bands. The singer, Reverend Maynard James Keenan, is a genius! When you get to Lateralus just remember fibonaci sequence and see if you can find it. Not many people can. Maynard definitely thinks differently then most. He also fronted 2 other bands: Puscifer and A Perfect Circle.
I just recently learned that the singer was in the army before going to art school. He also makes wine! Just some interesting but random facts! 😂

If you're making a Tool journey, when it comes time to listen to Lateralus, check it out your first time through however you'd like... then when you're finished, look up "The Holy Gift." You can rearrange the album's track listing using The Fibonacci sequence to get an album that flows more naturally from one song to the next, with multiple interpretations, etc. The title track, itself, uses the Fibonacci sequence in its writing and "construction," I guess you could say. The Fibonacci sequence also graphs out as a spiral, mathematically, and one of the song's repeated motifs is "Spiral Out." There's probably way more accurate and insightful stuff about this elsewhere on the internet... But, it's really what makes Lateralus one of the best albums ever written. Subbed, BTW! Great, insightful reactions so far, dude!

Tool covers deep topics. They strive through their art, to be a “Tool” to open minds. Without the weight of the lyrics and the complex compositions this would come off as pretentious but they make it work. Even if I don’t agree with parts of their message, I can’t deny that they provoke thought.

There is no order to Tool man. And don’t worry, you’re not going to screw anything up. They’re a band, they have music, listen to what you want, however you want to. Your video of “Right in Two” was great. You didn’t stop the song much, were very pointed, direct & honest w/your comments, & you really listened. Thx for that. Anyway, I’ll recommend “Third Eye.” Just make sure you’re strapped in.

I discovered Jinjer years ago while binding Tool reactions. They are a progressive metal core band from Ukraine they tend to go a bit harder than Tool but the complexity is all there. The general introduction is Jinjer Pisces the live session but if your looking to completely get your wig split check out Jinjer Pit of Consciousness live in Kiev from 2014.

14:03 - Indigo also has spiritual significance as the color of one of the chakras - Ajna, the Third Eye Chakra. To cozen is to trick or deceive, so putting on the act of being more spiritual, more caring by faking those cares.

Here is my guide for tool. There is a distinct sound to tool but their songs can be vastly different.
Its usually (not always) worth thinking about the meaning in tool songs (don't forget to enjoy the sound).
Some songs might have a meaning that isn't obvious but noteworthy but i left as much info out as possible for yourself to discover.
In some cases you should probably be in the right mood for maximum appreciation so i put that in there for those distinct cases.
    Good tool starter songs:
The Pot (about hypocrisy and it was the first tool song i ever heard where i fell in love with the band, maybe it works for you too)
Forty Six & 2 (about the next step in human evolution from 44 autosomes and 2 chromosomes to 46 & 2, its not quite as literate and just about evolving personally)
    Jambi (just a good song)
Vicarious (you will figure it out)
Aenema (angry at the world?)(Arizona bay would be formed if california would fall into the ocean - bit from comedian bill hicks)
    More advanced songs
Right in Two (pretty calm song, but beautiful and one of my all time favorites)
The Grudge (just a solid song with one of the longest growls ever)
Lateralus (don't over analyse but its based on the fibonacci sequence/golden ratio)
Pushit (relationship stuff, not my personal taste but ppl like it)
Sober (people like the live version ruclips.net/video/u7lweNCCwS0/видео.html)
Hooker With A Penis (its not what it looks like!)
Eulogy (about L ron hubbard, founder of scientology)
    Rosetta Stoned (hard to explain...)
Pneuma (good song from newest album, there is a really good drum cam video: ruclips.net/video/FssULNGSZIA/видео.html)
Tempest (another good one from their newest album)
Ticks and Leeches (you wanted drums right?)
    Stinkfist (a little fucked up)
Prison Sex (more than a little fucked up)
    really special songs
Parabol+Parabola (MAKE SURE YOU LISTEN TO THEM TOGETHER WITHOUT A BREAK! Relax and be patient)
Songs that would be cool to listen before Wings Marie:
Tool - Jimmy (about his childhood and leaving his mum behind after she suffered an aneurism that immobilized her)
A Perfect Circle - Judith (about his mum who despite what happened to her held onto her faith and maynard couldnt understand - very angry song)
Wings For Marie+10,000 Days (want to be sad?)(About Maynards mum, i really recommend looking into this more before listening as only then the emotional weight can really be felt i think)
    other worthy mentions:
    No Quarter (Led Zeppelin cover)
    The Patient
    H.
Disposition + Reflection + Triad (yes all three songs in a row!)
    Fear Inoculum
    Invincible
    Descending
Third Eye (a little out there)
    older tool
    sweat

Indigo is almost certainly a reference to the Chakras. Indigo is the color associated with the 6th Chakra, the "Third Eye," representing intuition and consciousness. (Tool's lyrics often reference stuff like this. There's even a song titled "Third Eye")
To cozen means to obtain through deceit, so my interpretation is "weeping shades of cozen indigo" relates to dishonesty or acting in bad faith. Or perhaps it refers to a false "consciousness" illicitly obtained through drug use?

Great Reaction! You hit the nail on the head as far as interpretation, although Tool songs leave interpretation relatively open. "Weeping shades of cozened indigo" = Crying...fake, dishonest, deceitful (cozened) sadness, despair (indigo, blue, sadness). Deceiving people by acting sad or remorseful.
In the early 2000s, there was a push in the courts to incarcerate people for drug use (aside from trafficking).

Yeah, if you want to go down this rabbit hole, then I highly recommend you start at the beginning of their discography with their raw anger in EP Opiate, then Hush. Working through the Undertow album, you will start to hear the complexity and questioning build, and you’ll appreciate the transformation of anger in AEnima, and climbing the mountain of enlightenment from Lateralus, 10,000 Days, and the summit of Fear Inoculum. Can’t wait to watch your journey and to see your special perspectives given your professional background. Spiral out!

To take that further, in the early days of Hollywood, actors would sometimes use lemon juice to produce tears for a scene. A side effect was a discoloration of the sclera (whites) of the eye, turning it purple. Fake tears/emotion resulting in a visible symptom of hypocrisy.
