You totally missed the biggest "problem" of all: the Comic Sans font in the BMS UI

Set the off timer to 15300, and put a switch in the 3v3 line of the screen. The BMS draws next to nothing while awake, and the screen will always be available, by simply flicking on the switch.

Thanks so much for this video. Was considering purchasing this monitor, but after I learned that you can't set the parameters from the touchscreen and get the values to 'stick', I decided to pass. I think I'm going to build my own monitor from an Arduino.

If you set your Screen timeout to 65535 that disables the screen timeout :) Also if yours is the same as mine the J6 Connector, “S1“ pin (Pin 3) on that connector wakes the BMS when shorted to ground, connecting a momentary push button there will wake the screen ( like a reset button on a PC) EDIT: it may be the J5 on yours, sorry I'm trying to help it was frustrating for me too!

Interesting and useful overview. I'm just setting mine up and not got the screen showing yet so this has been helpful. One thing I noticed on my display is the one connector splits into 2 for connecting to the BMS. One goes into the UART but I'm not sure on the other one. Guessing into the Chines labelled port which translated says host computer. Was this the same for your setup?

    • @TodaysProject
      @TodaysProject  3 года назад

Unfortunately no, mine was just one four pin cable that plugged into the screen and UART port on the BMS. My understanding is that Host Computer is for the USB cable connection to program the BMS with a computer.

@@TodaysProject Thanks for taking the time to reply. Maybe they have improved it based on your video and its additional connector is for allowing updates to the BMS. I'm waiting on clarification from Daly and when I get it working 🤞 I'll tag an update in here. Great video & keep posting similar as this was really helpful 👍

I got it working via your trick to charge the battery so thanks. The display came on without values and I ended up plugging the other connector into the BMS 485 port and today all the values were displayed. The only problem is I can't make changes to them like you pointed out. You can change the values but not set them. I need to now get or make a PC interface as the 300A version of BMS I have is not BT compatible if you select the screen option. I'll have to double check that but kind of wish I'd got the BT version now.

@@robwhitehouse8177 You can probably get firmware from Daly to change to bluetooth. I believe the only difference between the LCD model and bluetooth model is the firmware. I was able to update the firmware on mine and can now change settings with the LCD

For the para setting to stick even if its off and when you turn back on. First go enter a wrong password than a screen shows wrong password. Then go click on set password change it type old password 123456 than new passcode at ur will. Set it change your screen timer from there. Switch of and try switching on it stays.

Observations and comments. FYI I have a 250A 4s. It may have different I/O ports than yours, keep that in mind when I reference some of the BMS ports below.
I've measured the current draw of the screen at about 100mA on a 4s LiFePo4 battery.
You can use a 3.3v FTDI or other generic USB-UART adapter if you have one. If you don't have one, get one that is 3.3v/5v selectable. They're handy to have around. You need to use a different UART port on the BMS to use the Sinowealth software to set parameters. It's a 3 pin port, probably labeled PC or Monitor, probably in Chinese. There are many more parameters that can be set with the software than are displayed on the screen.
The SOC meter goes to 100% when the cell voltage reaches the charge end voltage that is set. You'll need to set it with the software. After that, it tracks the state of charge by measuring the charge and discharge current and referencing the programmed capacity.
The ammeter can be calibrated and the minimum current that is registered on the display can be changed with the Sinowealth software. The minimum current parameter is DfitterCur. You should set it to zero before calibrating the ammeter. I've noticed the ammeter has a lot of jitter in it's readings. You'll be able to see this in the info screen under CADC Current when DfitterCur is set to zero Calibrate the ammeter using the CADC Gain and CADC Zero parameters, then set DfitterCur to something reasonable like 1000mA.
The screen doesn't turn itself on or off. If the BMS is activated and awake, the screen is on. If the BMS goes to sleep, the screen goes off. When my BMS wakes after going to sleep, it doesn't communicate with the screen properly and only updates the info on the screen about once per minute. To correct the problem, I have to disconnect and reconnect the balance connector from the BMS, and then reinitialize the BMS. To initialize, the BMS needs to see charging current from the P- to B- cables, or momentarily short the 2 pin connector on the BMS. To wake the BMS, you can use charging or discharging current, or short the 2 pin connector.
I'm curious if your BMS has the communication problem after waking from sleep.
You can unplug and replug the screen into the BMS at any time without issue. If you don't want the screen on while you're using the battery, you can just unplug it and save 100mA. You could put a rocker switch in the 3.3v wire going to the screen if you want. It might be a good idea on a relatively small pack like yours.
My screen doesn't have the password screen. My firmware might be different than yours. My screen came preloaded with English firmware, and I haven't changed it.

Thanks for the info Mike! I didn’t even think about using my generic USB-UART adapter, I do have a selectable 3.3/5 FTDI one kicking around that I use from time to time for programing ESP8266 controllers. You are also correct, there is another 3 pin programing port for it. I’ll download that software and play around with some of the settings, thanks for the info on the ammeter, I’m sure that will come in handy!
I do fully understand that I could short pin 2 or charge / discharge to wake the BMS, but as a commercial product one would think they would have made away for user input on the screen to wake the BMS, just my two cents on that. I did also think about adding a switch to the 3.3v line from the BMS to the screen as well but again, I just don’t feel like I should have to, and tbh, it really doesn’t bug me that much, I just put that info out there for anyone picking this up to know what to expect out of the box.
I have also unplugged the screen many times from the BMS and removed the balance lead in attempt to reset the BMS, but still have the same issue with the random wake. It really isn’t a big deal to me tho, as the screen is really easy to just unplug when sleeping around it at them times.
Mine has always shown that password bar before and after the flash, I wonder if there is something different with the small BMS vs the bigger guy? That is odd.. Good to know tho, I’m planning on running a 8s 250a for my camper, still not sure if it will be a Daly Smart BMS or something else, there seems to be some good options finally hitting the market.
Thanks again for watching and the info!

@@TodaysProject I found an updated firmware for my BMS on a forum and flashed it. It has solved the issue that I have with it not communicating properly after waking, and also allows setting parameters from the screen. If you haven't done so, I recommend you contact Daly and try to get the firmware updated.

This video by Daly might help with the touchscreen config setup password issue:

also it looks like you can manually wake the BMS if you have their SOC indicator installed, apparently it has a button to wake the BMS up.
