I have a 2014 GMC Acadia 96000 Miles and never had any of these problems because I do normal regular Maintenance according to GM’s recommendations. However the tip on the heater core hoses was a good one to get rid of the plastic retainers and go with stainless steel. Thanks

The transmission does have that wierd shimmy in it but its still the original and holding on. The motor has never been opened and is completely original. We barley did the motor mounts all the way around, all 4 shocks, and first time replacing water pump. It's surprised the hell out of us honestly. We thought it would of blown up 46k miles ago.

Purchased a used 2008 with 30k miles on it back in 2009. Thank goodness I bought an extended warranty! I had many issues with the transmission. 4 different times being stranded, they finally rebuilt it. The water pump failed too. Other than that, I still own it with 225k miles on it.
Only other issues have been the alternator and the tee fitting on the coolant line.
Currently have a bad power steering pump for the past two years. Finally getting around to changing it.

Thanks. Your videos are great and very helpful!!!!! I just purchased a 2015 Acadia Denali (from GA) that was well kept and serviced regularly at the dealership they purchased it. It was a trade-in for a newer model. I will do all the things you mentioned as preventive maintenance to avoid major issues. Seems to be sound, only one owner, runs smoothly, transmission was flushed, regular oil changes since they purchased it and didn't display any bad engine codes on running my scanner. It should serve me well if I continue the same maintenance and then some as I do to all my cars 🙂 ... Thank you and look forward to more of your videos!!! ~Julia from Greenville SC

Timing chains were redesigned in 2014. So you can scratch that off the list for 2015 and 2016 cars. As far as other things, basic maintenance for any SUV car as they all are cramped in their engine bay.

I have a 2008 Acadia that is a nightmare! The car lot I bought it from knew it was a bad one but wouldn't even put it in their shop when I complained about it not going into gear when taking off at a stop light... This things check engine light stays on with the torque converter clutch and and transaxle control system malfunction plus the catalytic converter! I don't have the money to fix all that and I have driven it for 3 years in limp mode... Turning it off and starting it every 2 stop lights... The car lot head mechanic told me to just drive it till it quits..I finally paid it off last week...I will never go back there again! Lol I'm surprised it's lasted this long...I just wish I had seen a video before I bought it!!! I just wanted to let you know you are right on point with this one! 😥

If I remember right there was a service bulletin that went out that you had to use a good motor oil or the timing components did not hold up well. Problem is the timing set is also hydraulically tightened off the motor oil so running low on oil and crap oil cause a lot of the timing set issues.

Thanks for the info. I have been watching a few of these video's about the 2007-2012 Acadia's just to see what people think. I'm on my 2nd Acadia of this model style and would go out and buy a low mileage 2011-2012 (again) without question. Both of mine have been very reliable and I love the ride and the feel of this SUV. (The newer 2013+ Acadia's are lighter and ride stiffer, which I didn't like.) My first one, a 2007, (bought in 2009 with 37,000 mi) went to just over 165,000 mi. Power steering rack gear started going out - which I read was an issue with the earlier models. Rather than repair, I traded it in for a 2012 (in 2015), with 34,000 mi. That one is still going strong with 170,000 mi. Just replaced rear springs and shocks - fairly normal wear replacement. I have always used synthetic oil and think that's critical. Always change by 5,000 mi or slightly less. Did my 100,000 mi maintenance items as well - coolant change, trans fluid change, plugs, etc... Again, I like these so much I would hesitate to buy another used one from 2011 or 2012 with low miles, from a warm climate - no road salt (but getting hard to find). I do a lot of highway driving, so I'm probably a little easier on the engine. I am concerned about timing chain life with this engine but so far, no engine faults or performance issues with either one I have owned. It was one of the reasons I sold the 2007 rather than fix the power steering issue. With new SUV's of this style being sooooo expensive, it's hard not to justify keeping an older one running if you like it, and its in good shape.

2nd comment - I've been having a very difficult time finding a new used car to buy. I'm in Cali - have been buying from Internet searches since the late 90s. The used car world here is filled with folks selling cars that they don't own, have had no maintenance ("Just keep an eye on the stick and add fluid" 🙄), etc.
Long story short, I've been calling my auto mechanic's shop asking them ?s about the only "carfaxed" car I found - so I sent them pizza for lunch today & emailed the owner to tell him thank you for the good hires. Told him why I was looking for a car - and he has this one! Meets my needs with whistles and bells. Watched your video and a few others - I feel completely equipped for the responsibility of this car - thanks to you first!
My mechanic - his shop is where I take cars for a pre-purchase inspection AND his shop just swapped out the tranny.
Thank you for such an informative video - and please thank your wife for me. She got the close-ups of everything I wanted to see.

I got my 2008 Acadia from my grandparents a month ago and have been having some issues like it smelling like gas outside of the car but they said that’s what a throttle body does, there are two spots that water leaks in, and it’s also kinda of a gas guzzler if you drive it everyday that you have to fill up every 4 days

The only option it doesn't have is a power roof .
The day I baught it I took it to the shop I use to fix my vehicals he recommended I have a new timing chain put in so I did it cost me a little over two grand to replace and I haven't had one problem with the suv .
Just last week I realized it has heated seats that work.
When I take my son to school he watches a movie on the DVD player .
I hope to find another one as in good shape and for the same price.

  • @kellersales

Really good info. Some other concerns:
If you have a 2011, like I used to, a common problem has been the headlights burning out. This is actually a fire risk and I had to change out one of mine. Was told we were lucky that we did not already experience a car fire.
Had to replace the sensors found in the air intake manifold. This caused numerous issues and error codes including engine failure. Once these sensors were replaced, and cleaned out the air intake, was golden.
The transmission issues are real. It seems that they have gotten better in the 2015 and 2016 versions. I just bought a 2016 as it had the lowest customer complaints of any year plus it was still in the large body style which my family needs.
Acadia is a great vehicle, but I sincerely hope I do not experience the transmission issues like older models. If anyone is looking to get into one of these, look into the 2015, 2016, 2013 models as they had the least amount of complaints. If you are ok with the newer, smaller interior, the 2019 and 2020 seems to be doing well.

AND wouldn't you know it my timing chain is failing! but fortunately the chain is covered under warranty through by bank so once i fix that other stuff im taking it in to the shop to let them deal with that, i also have a heavy whining from my power steering (i believe), although no issues as far as turning goes. doing the plugs and coils myself wish me luck.

I am a GM vehicle fan. I enjoy your channel, and your tips are helpful to prospective vehicle buyers. I would like to highlight that GM supposedly improved the 3.6 liter DI engine after model year 2015. In addition, on the 2018 to 2020 second gen GMC acadia, GM offered the LCV 2.4 liter engine from the outgoing chevrolet Malibu. The LCV engine is more reliable compared to the 3.6 liter engine. Although the model is not reliable compared to a Toyota, many of its problems are assauged by normal maintenance. If you desire a used vehicle with low miles, the Acadia can be a reasonable choice.

Just bought my kid a 2012 Acadia, guy thought the headgasket blew on a 12k mile new reman engine for a jaw dropping $1k. I as soon as I dropped the engine out, it took 2 seconds to diagnose the water pump gasket blew out. Decided to check the heads anyways tore it down this is what I found: 2 almost falling out bolts, 1 loose bolt and 2 almost torqued bolts on the water pump. Cam bearing caps installed wrong spots, causing early wear on cams and bearing caps. Then finally left bank head... not torqued down, literally one bolt was finger tight, the rest were at maybe 20 ft lbs. Pulled the heads and luckily they are not warped. It was a matter of when that headgasket would have blown, but I caught it pretty easily. I'll be slapping it back together in a week when my parts arrive. Got a $6k car for $1k and about $550 in parts, and about 25 hours of my time. My kid is so ecstatic about my find. Shame on Midway Engine Rebuilding, glad that company went under.

I have a 2017 Enclave. Bought it with 11000 miles in 2018 and it now has 64000 miles. I change the oil every 3-5k, I drain and fill 8-10 qts of tranny fluid once a year. I did a drain and fill on the coolant, need to do it at least one more time. Only problems I’ve had are the purge valve after it got stuck open (switched it out in my driveway, real easy), AC started not cooling very well (recharged the AC no leaks after a year+) and the coolant temp sensor went out. Been a real good vehicle. I would never buy one of these as a used high mileage vehicle unless I knew the previous owner was strict on the maintenance like I have been, otherwise it can be a money pit.

We bought a 2014 Buick Enclave in 2018 with 35K Miles. It was cheap. Have driven it 60K Miles in 5 years with little issue. Change Oil with Mobile 1 Synthetic every 3,000 Miles. See Videos on GM 3.5 PCV Valve Modifications to help with slugging and eventually timing chain wear. Our transmission recently went out. $5,000 to rebuild. The transmission Cooler is built into the radiator and can develop an internal leak which allows engine coolant into the transmission. This wiped out our transmission. Recommend putting on an external transmission cooler.
