It's always funny for me to look back and read about Batman throwing criminals into acid tanks, then fighting aliens from different dimensions and getting involved in government conspiracies. His world offers for all kinds of amazing stories.

Same boat here about rejecting campy Batman in my teens and loving lighter toned Batman later on. Love The Batman and Arkham Verse and such. But I’m KICKING myself for not being into Brave in the bold back then. It’s honestly up there for me with BTAS as peak Batman. That last episode where it’s wrapping up and breaking down the sets had me in tears can’t lie. Was such a fun show and I didn’t want it to be over.
Yeah, I think this is the experience of a lot of us who grew in the 90s/00s. We probably saw reruns of Batman as kids, loved it for how fun and silly it was, but became angsty teenagers and got it into our heads that the Adam West show isn't the "real" Batman! (plenty of us also probably bought into the idea that there shouldn't be a Robin). Time cures most illnesses, though, so now as adults we can learn to appreciate how friggin great that old show was.
My good friend Dominic has always maintained that Batman is the best literary character, because he's so fluid that you can plop him down in any situation, in any iteration and *he just works*. Your video is a testament to that. Some of my personal favourites are on this list, especially the wilder and frankly sexier versions of the Caped Crusader.
You ever watched Batman Gotham Knight? Its an animated anthology, each segment is in a different artstyle but they kind of start to form a narrative as the movie goes on. I watch it like once a year, its peak Batman to me.
Personal favourites gotta be Pattinson, any Conroy performance and Brave and the Bold (gotta give credit to the more over the top comic style) Honourable mention: the 3 LEGO Batman games version
You don’t know how happy I am to see you talk about Batman The Audio Adventures, the most underrated piece of Batman media! I freaking love this series!
Pleasantly surprised to see you call out the wonderfully campy Audio Adventures! I also found Bradley Whitford’s Scarecrow to be inspired-just the right amount of too much.
One of the best movie lines is in the Lego Batman. Dick Grayson: “My name is Richard, but my friends call me, Dick!” Bruce Wayne: “Well kids can be cruel.”
The most iconic, greatest, & best Batman adaptation is Batman: The Animated Series which also includes Batman: Mask Of The Phantasm & Batman & Mr. Freeze: SubZero.
100% agree with you, if you trim The Batman a bit, it adds focus and becomes a true masterpiece. Also didn’t know about “Batman The Audio Adventures” gonna have to check it out. Thank you !
Interesting video. I enjoyed the NES Batman game but the Commodore 64 adaption of the 89 movie is still one of my favorites. It's quite faithful to the movie and nicely atmospheric. As much as I loved the Animated Series, I never liked Batman's design. The old style grey and blue spandex seemed silly having seen the black armour of the Burton movies.
The Batman is the best adaptation of Batmans boots striding in rain puddles. They even found a way to make batman stride in the rain upside down. When it comes to batmans boots striding in the rain, this movie can't be beat. I also liked how half the movie was about whether or not batman could get into a night club.
As a comics fan, I was always leery of their adaptations into other media. And it's long bothered me that the other media always seems to get more respect and attention than the original comic book source material. I got started in comic books in 1978, with Batman being my favorite, so I'm biased towards the 70s Bronze Age versions of comic characters and universes. I never forgave DC for Crisis on Infinite Earths for not only getting rid of the multiverse they had spent so many years building up, but that they did it *retroactively,* as if the multiverse had never existed. But I've become more lenient as I've gotten older. I eventually realized that the 1970s Batman was itself a variation and adaption of previous versions of the Batman. And if comics are so variable and malleable, then maybe there's nothing wrong with the various TV and movie adaptations, even if they approach it differently. Comics characters seem to go from one extreme to another, either being silly and campy, or being overly dark and gritty and depressing. What's wrong with being serious but hopeful, with the occasional bad joke and a happy ending? My idea of a great Batman movie would be somewhat more realistic and down to earth, but with a strong international flavor, like a Bond movie that travels to different parts of the world for different scenes. Several of the better Batman stories involving Ra's Al Ghul would be a great basis for such a movie. Ra's would be a great Bond villain, for that matter. Or perhaps even the Al Goodwin/Walt Simonson Manhunter story that Batman was brought into near the end. It could easily be rewritten so that Batman has a bigger part in the story. But in the end, I find I'm happier not making comparisons, and just enjoying something on its own terms, regardless of its source material.
Phenomenonal video as always, Josh! Your channel is always so enjoyable. It feels like a great conversation you're having with your friend discussing the funny books. Love your content, man!
When I was a kid, I thought Batman 66’ was incredible. When I was a teenager, I thought it was stupid. When I became an adult, I realized it was supposed to be campy with plenty of self-aware jokes.
So I have the audio adventures on my watch list, I'll definitely finally pull the trigger on it, and this video was great, especially because it made me realize how my memory was sprinkled with all of these, especially the on star and action figures had been dream like, but now oh man, I gotta lose my debit card before I make some plastic purchases haha I also didn't realize the batman movie filmed in england, majes sense why I liked its look so much, always felt the comics had that esthetic!!!
Knew it was going to be a good list when you included the OnStar commercials! They went hard on those commercials and felt like an ad for Batman as well!
Funny thing with nostalgia is that it’s usually only one aspect for why a person likes something. One piece of a larger puzzle. Like if a person says they like stuff from the 80’s that’s not the same thing as saying everything that everybody put out in the 80’s was perfect and everything from any other decade sucks even if that person maybe does have a preference for pop culture or comics etc. from that time.
Have you read the Batmanga? I got a copy recently that keeps the old magazine size and faded paper and limited coloring with a bunch of old ads. Seems right up your alley.
the 2022 movie is the live action one i like best. it needed to be long to tell a story that would have filled three or four 22-page comic books just as they used to do in the best Batman comics.
I think my only major difference of opinion is with the combat in the Arkham games being better than the Spider-Man games. For me, that's like saying Super Mario Bros plays better than Super Mario World. One leads into another, Arkham walked so that Spider-Man can run, so to speak. I love the combat in the Arkham games, but I feel like Spider-Man took everything from those games and improved on all of it. If the combat flow in Arkham is amazing, Spider-Man is Superior, Ultimate even 😉
I was going to comment on how weird it is you put some commercial and other weird media into your list. However I think I understand why you put them. These kind of weird niche parts of a character's mythos are just as important as the high budget movies and ongoing comic books. My dad often speaks of how at the peak of my spider man obsession, I would notice anything with a spider man on it, be it a snack at some local store or a bootleg toy that just illegally had the likeness the superhero on it. Props on you for showing how a myth grows from just a story passed around and told, to a household name everyone big and small knows of.

That's why art is powerful. An "objective" review is often just a guide for my wallet.
