    5:22 - What it means, for my writing to be successful? 📜🤔🖋 Is the target audience, (sci-fi, technological eye-candy, action, semi suspense/thriller, horror), 😂🤣 come out of the theater saying things like, "That was Awesome!" "Now that's what I'm talking about!" "Bro, that is my new favorite movie."

    I'm confused. I thought the Story Question had to be answered toward the end of Act 3. If it's answered at the end of Act 2, then what's the point of Act 3?

    Don't know man, not really with you on this one, although I really love your channel. Act 2 answering whether the character gets what he wants? What about act 3? 007 wants to catch Dr No: We won't know whether he manages or not until practically the end of the movie. Afterwards you just have a denouement.

      I agree. The question is usually answered at the climax, not the 2nd Act Break.

    • @mactoch

      Not necessarily. At the end of the second act in Up, the old guy PLACES his house, literally, where he wanted. That’s the end of act 2. But he lost his new family (his need) and chooses to destroy his want in order to get his need. That’s the third act. Still rules can be broken but I always tend to see a positive or negative answer at the end of act 2 regarding the WANT and then at the end of act 3 it may be positive or negative :) cheers.

      @@mactoch That's a good answer, but it doesn't fit to the channels' definition of a story as "someone wants something, has trouble getting it and either manages to or he doesn't"

    Depending where you are in your screenwriting journey and you thought you had a good idea, wrote it, finished it and think it’s amazing. That’s great. But if you are learning (you should always be) There is no reason you can’t start another great idea, but if that first script is still strong in your mind, go back and make the changes you have learned over the months or years since you wrote the first draft. Go back. Tweak, clean it up or re-write it. When I learn new things on dialog, action scenes, plot or pacing, I go back and add it to the scripts I have finished. It’s important to keep creating new projects so you can keep the juices flowing, but you can always go back and make your old scripts better. Love this channel. I always find something new that I can use weight away.

    Suffice it to say , a " lousy screenplay " produces a " lousy movie ". A good example would be Cats starring Taylor Swift. An absolutely mindless musical which was probably only produced because of her " Star Talent ".

    Incredible as always. Polite tip as a subscriber who cares: swap out that cheap blue LED for a nice soft warm source (softbox with a bicolour light like a Aputure 60X or Amaran); the image will be a lot more flattering and skin tones will look healthier. Save the coloured lights for the background or a backlight if you must.

    I have watched and rewatched many of your vids. They are always full of good information and you present it in an engaging manner. Thank you. Everything I have seen from you has to do with feature-length films. While I have several of those simmering in the background, my first script is for a short. So... Can you do a vid on shorts, mostly on structuring them and character depth? Please? Thanks for considering this.

  • @formulaic78
    @formulaic78 16 дней назад

    In my latest script I started writing with a clear protagonist. But in writing I found that the antagonist was actually a more interesting character and drove the movie more than the protagonist, who was mostly reacting. However, by the end of the movie the antagonist has been reformed, so I wonder if this character could in fact be both the protagonist and antagonist, with the original protagonist being a supporting character. The antagonist does share the same clear goal as the original protagonist, so the story is still about someone who wants something, has difficulty getting it, and in this case doesn't get it. I could "fix" this problem (and I suppose this video is telling me I damn well should) but I feel it would make for a less interesting movie.

    • @formulaic78
      @formulaic78 9 дней назад

      EDIT: There ain't much engagement here, but in case anyone reads this I came across the concept of a group protagonist e.g. avengers. I think my story works under that premise where 3 characters are fighting towards one goal, with one of those characters simply going too far in trying to achieve that goal setting himself against the other two protagonists, but with them all being aligned at the end once more.

  • @user-xk7lt8dr3r
    @user-xk7lt8dr3r 22 дня назад

    Hello Jacob, everyone, I am just a bit confused as to what (V.O.) should be used for. I see it used here in the phone call but in the other video (linked at the end) about how to use (V.O.), (O.S.) and (O.C), we learn that (V.O.) is something the characters do not hear. This is just for the audience and that (O.S.) is the one to use for a phone call. Thank you very much!

  • @Blastarr1
    @Blastarr1 23 дня назад

    Can you use O.S. for O.C.? The script program I use only has o.s., O.S., v.o., or V.O. (all cap vs no all cap) Also, would a phone call be OS or VO? The character can hear them but not see them. What if you have a scene where a person starts the conversation off-screen as a surprise for an on-screen character and they whip around to see them there.

  • @ERIKVADA

    Input on Character Intro? INT. SUBURBAN HOUSE, BEDROOM - NIGHT Limited. The type of place you could leave in a hurry. An assortment of neatly arranged pill bottles drown the nightstand. Turned upside down, a picture frame. NICK FREEDMAN, 40s, intense, eerily reserved, sits wide-eyed and upright on the edge of his made-up bed. An alarm clock ignites: “0500.” Nick disables it. Forcefully. Clenching both knees, our hero reaches for the frame - Pulls back. Leaves it alone. Nick fires a handful of capsules down his neck. No chaser. This isn’t his first sleepless night.

    Well, screenwriting is like reading music, I get as far as EGBDF and thats it! Screenwriting has no schools. Learning to format in the internet is difficult all coaching seems to be a typical thing. I haven't rated my interest to a high level because of this, but I bet if there are traditional schools, I can make an opinion on myself.
