Anamorphic Panoramas | Nikon F4S
My Skillshare course on Film Photography (with one month free trial) - skl.sh/3p5sk9K
--
Anamorphic photography can be considered an advanced photography technique as it involves shooting photos with unconventional lenses and the post production work requires the photographer to de-squeeze the images. In today's video, Sathya has tried to execute his idea of shooting anamorphic panoramas with a film camera using his trusty Nikon F4S and a Blazar Nero Anamorphic 1.5X adapter. The camera first captures squeezed images on to the film. Film is then developed and scanned. Scanned images are then desqueezed in photoshop to achieve an anamorphic look with a panoramic format of 2.25:1.

I had the Intrepid 4x5 Mk4, but needed an upgrade. I just ordered the Chamonix 45F-2, and needed a refresher video. This video was the perfect one. I liked the calm tone of your voice, the right amount of information, and the little video clips here and there. It's clear that you've put a considerable amounts of time and effort to come up with such an awesome video. Thank you!
Hi Khalid, glad you found it useful. Enjoy the Chamonix!
What did you do with the camera in the end to get back to zero? My counter stays on 15 and I can still fire the camera and the mirror slaps and I can wind again..
Hi, I used a dark changing bag; put the camera inside, opened the back and wound the film back into the canister and then took it out of the dark bag.
the metering is a very tiny spot in the "centre" of viewfinder. I still have to set -1 exposure compensation which is ridiculous considering the camera is supposed to be metering. Also my original I-2 had to be returned to polaroid as faulty (wouldn't eject dark slides ) and wildly wrong exposures!
That must’ve been frustrating for you to deal with a faulty unit to begin with. Are you liking the image quality? Haven’t had wildly wrong exposures with in built metering yet. And I don’t think it’s a tiny spot, from what I understand it’s 60% of the optical field of view by a single photocell so meters the centre part of fov and disregards everything else. Polaroid does say on their website that its centre weighted but I don’t understand how it could be if it only averages 60% of the optical fov. Maybe it is centre weighted within that 60% fov metering area. But yeah, I agree metering lets this camera down.
Linhof currently produce five 4x5 cameras, in addition the medium format range. All can accommodate film and digital imaging.
Cool good to know
Then there is the 645 D and Z
Would love to try the Z at some point
Your delivery of information is a very nice speed and simplicity
Thank you!
09:31 point the meter to the camera not like that,
I could’ve been clearer in my explanation as I thought the meter was infact pointing my video camera, in this case, as a demonstration. But yes, point the meter to your camera while measuring the light on your subject. Thanks for the comment 👊🏽
Great video I’ve really been thinking about getting one
Thanks Marty!
Great video, thank you from The Netherlands!
You’re welcome Victor! And thank you for watching :) are you planning on getting this camera?
Yes! Already did, should arrive later this month. Can’t wait to try it myself!
@@vinovidiviccie ah awesome! Have fun :)
Thanks Sathya! You too!
Hi, your video is great! I’m considering to buy one, but some people said it has the exposure problems ? How do you think? 600 dollars is not cheap 😂
Hi! The internal meter works well in some situations and does not work well in others. If you want to fully rely on the camera’s internal meter, I would not recommend it. But if you are happy to use an external meter then I recommend it for the image quality. Thanks for watching 🙂👊🏽
@@SathyaPeacock Great! Thanks for your advice 👍
this is great, how did you edit the super 8 effect ?
Thanks for watching, I think it was an overlay from somewhere, sorry can’t remember exactly where from. probably googled ‘super 8 overlay effect’ :)
I’ve been meaning to try this myself, but couldn’t justify buying an anamorphic lens just for this. So I’ve been using a cheap anamorphic on my iPhone.
Hi Andrew! Yeah I wouldn’t have done it either and iPhone cameras are super powerful anyway
@@SathyaPeacock I have been considering getting a used Sigma DP1 Quattro as that has a built in xpan like aspect ratio (intended for use as a directors viewfinder for framing / scouting I think). Sure it is digital and isn’t using the whole sensor but being able to compose at the right ratio is the key for me. Otherwise I’d write some notes and crop afterwards. In the meantime I’ve been using a Lomo Belair with a 35mm back - but the lenses are plastic fantastic so the results have that lomo vibe.
@@AndrewJacksonSE I didn’t know that! That’s cool. And never heard of the Belair before; just googled, looks sick 👌🏽
And Lomography has gotta be my fav company for how accessible & fun they make photography.
Nice video! Which adapter are you using?
Hi! Thank you :) it was the Blazar Nero 1.5X adapter
@@SathyaPeacock thanks!
Finally someone trying a new idea. I love when original content hits RUclips after all the repetitive content we get these days
Ah thank you! That means a lot 👊🏽
What lens were used for those cinematic BTS shots?
Hi, I assume you’re referring to the ‘Photographs’ section; all shot with the sigma 16mm f1.4 contemporary series.
Loving the look!

Wow. I have a Nikon f100 and the 50mm 1.8. Always wanted to shoot anamorphic. This amazing!

Thank you so much for watching! Glad it was useful :)
your polaroids look amazing!

Very insightful review!
Thankyou! Glad it was useful :)
Im looking at this exact setup ( camera and lens ) that you have.....but im worried about the vignetting from the 40mm. Any thoughts? Thanks! Wonderful video
Hi Matt, I don’t remember vignetting being a problem (nothing that can’t be fixed in post anyway). I loved that lens for its image quality and close focussing distance, but had to sell it as I wasn’t shooting enough with the F4 to justify keeping it. This is a regret of mine. I am coming around to shooting more 35mm so I might pick it up again. I definitely recommend if it’s in your budget. Thanks for watching!
Thanks for your incredible video which is very informative for me who is now seriously thinking about buying a large format camera.
I’m glad it was useful! Thank you for watching :)
hi! I’m debating on whether on getting the slr 680 or i2, do you have advice? I like the features of the I-2, like shutter speed, but I think the slr 680 is classic. would you say the outcome of each photo, sharpness and colour is the same? thank you :)
Hi, I have not shot with the SLR 680 personally so unfortunately I can’t give you advice. I just quickly searched for prices on eBay for the 680 and it’s as expensive as or more so than the I2. For that reason alone I’d choose I2 as it’s a newer camera with warranty and fully manual features. Metering is not excellent if the lighting is uneven so prepare to manually meter for those instances with the I2. All the best :)
@@SathyaPeacock thank you so much! love your videos btw
@@thelasttime7522 thank you!
Hey there, thank you very much video. It was a pleasure watching it. 😊 Well I actually own a onestep 2 for three years now and I love shooting with it and I really like the look of the Polaroid photos. So I am actually thinking about upgrading to the I-2, because I wanna have more control about my shooting. Beside the price, I heard a lot that the light metere is kinda off all the time. In the house it works okay, in the outside you need to step down 2/3 and if it is a bit dark, then you should go up until stop 1. Did you experience this mess? I mean I guess you can work around that and get a feeling for it, but I am not sure whether to wait for the I-3.. (if it ever will be released, who knows, but if so, it will probably take them three years or so to be released). What would you suggest me to do? Do you have to feeling that this is a huge problem? Thx in advance. 😄
Hey! Thank you for watching. Evenly lit situations produce good results for me whether indoors or outdoors (for instance the candy cart shot was outside and was metered in camera). But high contrast / backlit / off centred subject scenes are problematic. So I know to manually meter for those. If you are interested in manually metering for complex scenes then I2 is good. Having that control is sweet.
Thanks for a great video. I look forward to viewing your large format camera movements (front and back) video.
Thank you for watching! Glad it was useful :)
I have nothing but compliments for this video man. Every second was a pleasure and so well done. I started to type out everything I love but genuine the whole video was perfect. Also I was on the fence about getting the I2 but you've convinced me! Thanks for taking the time to make this!
I’m glad to hear that :) Thank you so much for letting me know it was useful! Enjoy shooting with it :)
Thank you for your feedback on the magnifier ! Planning on getting one for studio portraits
You’re welcome, glad it was useful 🙂
Why on earth shoot negative? Slides are the way to go 😊. Thanks for the video. Been shooting slides since 1976 btw. Never turned back.
Oh wow that’s awesome! Slides certainly are special :) Thanks for watching.
Fantastic video - you made me care about a camera I didn't care about
Thank you for watching! Glad you enjoyed it :) Let me know if you end up buying one!
Another beautiful video!!! Great intro ;) but love your colour grading for outdoor shooting.
Thanks dude :) glad you like the colours!
Damn this was great!

Great video mate! Very helpful, explaining everything that matters and beautiful footage for both the camera and your outdoors. Liked & subscribed!
Thank you Petros!
that intro is fire!
Thank you sir 👊🏽
I want to Clear something. Actually we, for photography entusiasts there is no need for a pro camera. More over perhaps it would be good enough to carry a F301for taking pictures. Since you are using manuel lenses. But it does not work in this manner. We actually like some precious tools. O have a small collection. The cameras I like, from Compact fixed lens like minox, Olympus xa, xa2 then Zeiss ikon's, Kodak's to Mamiya medium formats. But mostly I take compacts with 35-40mm with me. Any way I am looking forward to take pictures with my Mamiya press23 with 90/3,5 and 75/5,6 lenses. Thank you so much for your works. I am glad to watch.
Thanks for watching and leaving these comments Erhan! That’s a nice collection of cameras. I have been intrigued by the press cameras for a while now, hope you enjoy using the kit :)
Dear Sathya, Since some more then a year, I own an F4, attached lens was a 35mm /1:2 nikkor D AF. O did not took it out to take pictures. My aim was to sell it seperately and earn some money, as I bought it moderately cheap. But as I took it to mu hands O loved it. The diaphram of the lens was oily. But I could clean it, any how three times. I hope it won't again. Then I started to gather some other AF lenses of Nikon. Because O loved the body. Although it is very heavy to carry. The Real manuell buttons are charming. But I still have some ..... . Some of the buttons are unneccesary. For examplesome lock buttons. On off drive button lock, and so.
Nikon F4 is a special camera yes :) even when I went through an overhaul of selling a bunch of cameras I couldn’t bring myself to sell the F4. I took it out recently and sure enough I was glad to have kept it, it’s a joy to use! Thank you again for watching :)
Greta video! Thank you
Hi Joseph, thank you for watching!
Great video, good info and very well presented!
Hi Morgan, thank you for watching :) glad you found it useful.
I've had my F4 for 2 yrs now and am very happy with it. Mine came with the MB-21 holder and have recently picked up a very nice MB-20 holder and now love the camera even more ,if that is even possible. I like that it is the grandfather of all the SLR and DSLR bodies that followed. It is the last Nikon body that had all switches, buttons and dials and that is nice for those of us that started in photography in the film only days. I'm now 71 and have been shooting since I was 18.
Hi, that’s great to hear! I have come to appreciate it even more now too after 3 years of use. It’s a well rounded tool 👌🏽
I’m 73 and have been seriously shooting since 1973. My first SLR camera was a Petri FT-II, purchased from a relative’s military catalogue, for a little over $100.00. My favorite subject matter, in fact the reason why I got what I considered to be a “serious” camera, was to take pictures at rock concerts. I purchased a Petri 135mm tele lens from one of the then 3 camera stores in lmy town. But it was a slow lens, f5.6 or something like that. I traded it for faster Vivitar lens, an f2.8, at one of the other camera stores. As my interest photography gree

great review, storytelling ang gorgeous photos. you definitely sold me the camera!
thank you for watching! Great little camera, I might wait until Fujifilm's X summit later this month before buying it though as they might release X pro4 - but this is a very capable camera nonetheless :)
Snagged one yesterday for £45 on Ebay. Seller doesn't know much about it, it was her partners who was a photojournalist and sadly passed away some time ago - aparantly it's been in the loft/attic ever since. Listed as 'for parts' but she doesn't know if it's working or not. Decided to roll the dice.. wish me luck. Looks a bit rough cosmetically but I'm hoping the photojournalist kept the important bits working and just didn't care about how it looked.. fingers crossed! I really want it to work!
oh wow that is a steal, Good luck! let me know how it turns out :)
@@SathyaPeacock Gladly! It arrived and I put batteries in it and.. dead as a dodo. Brick. Damn.. ... ... ... But wait, there's more! The batteries I'd put in were rechargables, they'd *been* charged when I unplugged the charger (because they were full) but that was months ago.. cue me searching through our battery recycling bin - Aha, A Duracell.. and an Energizer! Well, they don't sell those individually, so there's at least 3 more of each in there.. more digging.. 8 batteries! Rushing back to the camera, I was filled with 'hail mary' hope. Put them in and.. LIFE! It worked! I took a deep breath, took the old batteries out, calmed my nerves, grabbed my car keys and headed to the store. Fast forward an hour and I'm back with an 8 pack of Duracell AA's. Attacked the packaging and ripped the batteries out like an hungry bear with a happy meal - Put them in and holy <insert deity of choice> - it works....! It all works! Metering, Motor drive, the LCD's have NO bleed.. it works!! ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... With one small caveat - The Autofocus is semi-broken. Basically, sometimes it will 'see' or recognise that there's a CPU lens (an AF lens) attached, a lot of the time it won't. Most of the time it won't. I've tried scrubbing the bejesus out of the contacts, with contact cleaner, isopropyl, using an eraser, all the common tricks. They *look* sparkly clean but I did notice a couple of times that it wouldn't work, then I'd clean the contacts, then it'd work for a couple of hours, until I put the camera down for a bit and coming back to it.. same thing, it can't see the CPU lens. It hasn't worked reliably enough for me to be certain that's causation and not just correlation though, it has started working on its own once or twice as well. Maybe it's not the contacts, maybe there's oxidisation on a switch somewhere inside the body. I tried spraying contact cleaner into the AF select switch and wiggling it a lot, didn't seem to help, but maybe I'll give that another go. I know it's an issue with it 'seeing' the CPU lens because when I put it in S mode, (or P or Ph) it defaults to "A" mode, the expected behaviour if one of those modes is selected but with an AI or AI-S lens attached (instead of an AF-D). Have tried a bunch of "known-good" AF-D lenses, they don't work on the F4, they do work on other bodies, so it's defo not the lens. I am overall super freakin' happy though, if someone had said to me "hey bud, do you wanna buy a Nikon F4 for £45? It works great, apart from there is no AF, it's busted, so Manual focus only" I'd have said Hell yeah! At that price. I guess I could always *try* to find someone who will CLA an F4s in the UK for less than the price of a working kidney, although I fear the outlook is grim on that front. But yeah, overall i'm absolutely loving it ... ... ... Butttt there's this little nagging part of me that really *wants* it to be 'fully working' even if it's a feature I won't use much. (My other nikon film bodies are all manual focus). I've run a few rolls of film through it so far and apart from the AF, everything is lovely. The metering seems great! It weighs a ton! I love it! And that's the full story, up until now, where we're at, and where we might be going!
All good things brother - good to verbalize what you are after and hold yourself accountable.
