American Football - American Football (LP 3) Review
A dime dancer is not a pole dancer! A dime dancer refers to the girls that used to go to the USO clubs back in the world war II and would dance with a guy all night for a dime. It was a romantic thing not a sleazy thing.
The older I get, the more Steely Dan I listen to. Always been very particular with music. I've had phases, but jazz and prog are generally always something I like. I sort of hate radio. But when I was a kid in the 90s and Rikki Don't Lose That Number or Home At Last would come on, I didn't hate it. Eventually I didn't hate it enough to listen to the album, and I've been hooked ever since. But definitely more lately. Just speaks to me.
Everything Must Go be better than 2 against Nature…for sure…for sure
The most absolutelyb uninspiring band I've ever heard.
A Miles Davis version of the Seinfeld Theme would go so hard
Great Lyrics and story Telling. As Prince would say Real Music by Real Musicians.❤
The Music Industry is always trying to put things in a Box so the CEOs can control it.
Favorite band have every album that was released on vinyl and ever album on CD, all solo albums, but not one of "those" fans, I wouldn't dream of approaching them if I saw them on the street.
"Don't take me alive" was written for the movie based on the book "sometimes a great notion" by Ken Kesey. FYI
I recently saw another Steely Dan documentary that explained that the dude that got paid that crazy amount of money developed a primitive drum machine, and that drum sound was used on Hey Nineteen and then layered with real drums on top! Hey 19 might be my favorite SD song.. THE CUERVO GOLD!!! ...skate a little lower
Steely Dan is art. Toto is a fart. They share letters but that is about it. The Boston Symphony and the Boston Pops share many of the same skilled musicians but one plays only the works of genius while the other only occasionally touches genius.
Undercurrent is one of my favorite albums.
IMHO a Top-10 All-Time rock band--a unique & distinctive rock/jazz/R&B fusion sound with great guitar licks, drums, horns & lyrics.
First of all, great video. Just surprised you didn't touch on the actual relationship depicted in "Gaucho." The song is about a Rent Boy relationship ("You're a nasty schoolboy with no place to go") between the narrator and his partner. "Who is the Gaucho, Amigo?" It's another man he's caught with, as Spanish is a gender-specific language - the "o" at the end of both words is the giveaway to the genders of both. "One more expensive kiss-off" is the narrator covering his sexuality up to the "heavy rollers" who also inhabit the Custer Dome. The bodacious cowboy is a wayward gay man himself, with the narrator's partner "Holding hands with the man from Rio." There's also a second possible subtext to the chorus, dealing with Fagen and Becker themselves: The "Gaucho" in this case is Becker, at the time a drug-addled mess, and it's the label asking Fagen why he's propping him up (even wearing Fagen's clothes). So many ways you can take this song, but the gay subtext is the most obvious.
It’s simply called “Yacht Rock” because it was the kind of music that was played in beachside bars during the 70s and early 80s and the music people listened to while relaxing on their boats with a beer. It’s certainly not a derogatory term. I think it’s because the melodies and chords have a very “chill and relax” vibe to them even if the lyrics don’t always have the same.
It was never called Yacht Rock in the 70s or 80s. It comes from comedy RUclips videos. You are obviously a millennial.
@ I never said it was called yacht rock back then. Simply stating why it was called that. And I’m gen x.
@@raymondmeyers8983 i appreciate the clarification but it really doesn’t address the main issue about how the name came about. There is a documentary on HBO about it. It is really about LA session musicians who played on lots of albums in the 70s and 80s. The musicians who appear in the documentary are gracious and amused but they don’t fully buy into the Yacht Rock idea (I suspect that Fagan is closer to the truth). If it gets Gen X listening to their music by calling it Yacht Rock, great. You might want to look into “Wrecking Crew” which is about session guys who played in LA in the 60s. It turns out that there are a few hundred musicians who are responsible for a lot of the music.
I fully disagree that Pretzel Logic is their worst album, I actually quite love it! You can’t possibly like it less than their two reunion albums! :( Great video tho, and I’m glad to see yet another person give the Dan some well-deserved coverage and recognition! :)
I use the Dan as a reference to test my speakers/eq levels and new headphones performance and end up going down the steely Dan rabbit hole of songs I dig and finding new songs I hadn't heard before. your technical/mechanical precision comment is spot on.
Tubi app have this movie for free YAY
Steely Dan never took themselves seriously??? Oh buddy, your thesis is off base from the jump.
the title track is silent because Sly felt there should be no riots
This is a nice overview of Steely Dan music. But you dont know enough background on the Donald and Walter to appreciate what theyre doing. Like their background in beat literature, Donald's knowledge of jazz, their interest in soul music, the whole beatnik and hippie vibe that they were living in. For example you totally missed the meaning of the lyrics of "Only a Fool Would Say", it was making fun of John Lennon's lyrics about world peace in songs like "imagine" and how out of touch it was with real life.
Where’s the Monkey in your Soul bro?
Been a Steely Dan fan for a while, but always wanted to get deeper into their catalogue of music and know the people behind the music. This video did an amazing job in highlighting the different aspects of their personalities and how that affected the music they created. Thank you for making this video, it was aweseome.
Loved this very comprehensive Steely Dan review! They’ve been a favorite of mine for 5 decades. Favorite song…..Home At Last! 👍😊
The creator of the DC mini, a cutting edge piece of technology, is a 'child trapped in the body of an adult' who consumes everything. "The sleepwalker whistling a happy tune as he ambles towards the abyss.”
The demon may have killed her parents, maybe it didn't. It did show her the accident in the dream to create an opening for it to possess her. Whether the demon exists or not is not crucial to the story, but some stuff would be hard to explain otherwise. How else did Kat see the wrecked car other than it's a hell of a coincidence, and who does she see in the dream? She also has that weird smile when the priest says he won't be around, levitates and uses a creepy voice on the nun at one point.
Rikki is about a gay guy hitting on a straight guy, btw.
incredible video. ive been a huge deftones fan for years, when i initially knew them for their hit singles i had no idea what i was in for when i delved deeper into their discography. they're my all time favorite band now. also, i completely agree that knife prty is their best song to date, from that mesmerizing bass line that pulls you in at the start to the chilling female vocals that truly bring the track to its climax, its just absolute perfection all around.
Great retrospective on one of the most important collaborations to music for musicians & music lovers alike. It's amazing how many people I knew who were in bands when we were young who either were indifferent or even hated Steely Dan, and how every single one of them grew to greatly admire their body of work as we became professional musicians, songwriters & producers within the span of decades in our lives. Thank you for this video - Fantastic job
Wow. Insightful, knowledgeable, informed, & spot on. I may disagree with regard to a track or two here or there, yet otherwise as close to a comprehensive overview as one could hope for. Thanks for including the later albums, as well as the solo ones (w/the exception of Becker's 'Circus Money'). A most worthwhile listen as well. Took a while for Karma to grow on me. Hated it initially. Maybe a few more repeated listenings? If I were forced to summarize your efforts in one word, I'd say bravo! Seems one is either in or out where Messers Becker & Fagen are concerned. For those who are "in," thanks for not wasting my time with some absurd clickbait. You drew me in right away. They say the best don't talk down to their audience. Thanks for upholding that standard.
Steely Dan's songs - the more you you listen, the more they grow on you. You discover things you didn't noticed before, the music layers taking over, the focus on wonderfully played instruments, (lots of instruments), the detail in the transitions. Most have great lyrics and for the very few that might not, (like The Fez), still have great music and are awesome too. Pretty sure that if you get a better stereo system, you'll automatically like their music even more. I always find categorizing their music as "Yacht and Elevator music" offensive and anybody that does can go F themselves. Their music is Jazz, Rock, Blues, Funk, and a little bit pop, and nobody does it like them. Having the best instrument player for each instrument in each song is just GENIUS, what if somebody else had taken Donald's and Walter's parts?
There are some great takes on here. It feels that a lot of the time people don’t acknowledge the misses in the first few records.
ilove TTNG
Good vid, but I still don't get how this mf is good
what I get the most from her music is this notion of Beautiful Sadness; having depression as just part of your life and seeing beauty wherever you can in this hazy sad filter. thanks for making this
I’ll never get over how good this whole album is
I really enjoyed your take on one of the best bands/partnerships going-I heard Can't Buy A Thrill when I was 14, 15, it was seismic, a shock that never left (when I listen to how freaking excellent these guys are), You captured something of the feel of that - Thank you!
Kawhat kawhat?
Lain anyone?
This album blew my mind when i was a teen and i have loved it since, im glad someone talks about it finally, this deserves more. There is no music like this anywhere
I always got a masturbation vibe from Rose Darling, mainly from the name of the other supposed woman. That's the fun thing with Steely Dan: the songs can be interpretated in so many ways, from serious to sarcastic.
"The issue that it is called Paprika, and we don't learn much about the character Paprika." No offense it's fine if you didn't like this movie I did find it to be a little all over the place, but Paprika's character is the least confusing part of this movie to me she's very obviously a childish alter ego of the female detective that takes on a life of her own at the end. I actually think it makes a lot of sense that the policeman completes his arc without Paprika - Chiba/Paprika has her own arc that parallels his, about suppressing her inner desires and being her true self.
Beautiful 🧡
Great band and music
4:54 I’m pretty sure you mean “finagle” (a Yiddish word”), not “fenangle”. But I could be wrong.
This film is not simply a documentary, it is the director's most personal and profound message, the reflection of a man who points himself as guilty, calling the world's attention and saying “Please look, this happened, my government did this, my army did this, we stand there looking and doing nothing, we helped kill innocent people, I helped them and no one told us anything, there is still no justice... please know it”
Steely awesome Seinfeld awful
nice video! I've always thought the lyrics on this album to be very compelling, to say at least. I really love this record.
Paprika is perfect. The villian is the wheelchair guy because he's old and made of trees in the dream and he represents antiquity and the opposite of progress and technology. The detective is the sympathetic generic hero type that we're supposed to be able to relate to. And the protag (who you're not really supposed to like) has an awesome character arc that comes to a symbolic head weirdly at the end at the same and is reborn as the baby that also represents newness and advancement, the opposite of the villain in the movie and also Chiba's real self which is a mixture of her and Paprika.
All things considered. I would still prefer to listen to Steely Dan.
