Steely Dan's songs - the more you you listen, the more they grow on you. You discover things you didn't noticed before, the music layers taking over, the focus on wonderfully played instruments, (lots of instruments), the detail in the transitions. Most have great lyrics and for the very few that might not, (like The Fez), still have great music and are awesome too. Pretty sure that if you get a better stereo system, you'll automatically like their music even more. I always find categorizing their music as "Yacht and Elevator music" offensive and anybody that does can go F themselves. Their music is Jazz, Rock, Blues, Funk, and a little bit pop, and nobody does it like them. Having the best instrument player for each instrument in each song is just GENIUS, what if somebody else had taken Donald's and Walter's parts?

There are some great takes on here. It feels that a lot of the time people don’t acknowledge the misses in the first few records.

what I get the most from her music is this notion of Beautiful Sadness; having depression as just part of your life and seeing beauty wherever you can in this hazy sad filter. thanks for making this

I really enjoyed your take on one of the best bands/partnerships going-I heard Can't Buy A Thrill when I was 14, 15, it was seismic, a shock that never left (when I listen to how freaking excellent these guys are), You captured something of the feel of that - Thank you!

I was not blown away by Digital Bath. I guess this kind of music just isn't for me.

This album blew my mind when i was a teen and i have loved it since, im glad someone talks about it finally, this deserves more. There is no music like this anywhere

I always got a masturbation vibe from Rose Darling, mainly from the name of the other supposed woman. That's the fun thing with Steely Dan: the songs can be interpretated in so many ways, from serious to sarcastic.

"The issue that it is called Paprika, and we don't learn much about the character Paprika." No offense it's fine if you didn't like this movie I did find it to be a little all over the place, but Paprika's character is the least confusing part of this movie to me she's very obviously a childish alter ego of the female detective that takes on a life of her own at the end. I actually think it makes a lot of sense that the policeman completes his arc without Paprika - Chiba/Paprika has her own arc that parallels his, about suppressing her inner desires and being her true self.

This film is not simply a documentary, it is the director's most personal and profound message, the reflection of a man who points himself as guilty, calling the world's attention and saying “Please look, this happened, my government did this, my army did this, we stand there looking and doing nothing, we helped kill innocent people, I helped them and no one told us anything, there is still no justice... please know it”

Steely awesome Seinfeld awful

nice video! I've always thought the lyrics on this album to be very compelling, to say at least. I really love this record.

Paprika is perfect. The villian is the wheelchair guy because he's old and made of trees in the dream and he represents antiquity and the opposite of progress and technology. The detective is the sympathetic generic hero type that we're supposed to be able to relate to. And the protag (who you're not really supposed to like) has an awesome character arc that comes to a symbolic head weirdly at the end at the same and is reborn as the baby that also represents newness and advancement, the opposite of the villain in the movie and also Chiba's real self which is a mixture of her and Paprika.

All things considered. I would still prefer to listen to Steely Dan.

When Aja first came out, I thought "Dime Dancing" was a reference to Free Market Capitalism. In today's march to Global Socialism, I am sure that was Fagan's prophecy. Just as the current Migrant Crisis is a Royal Scam.

I don’t think you give pretzel logic enough credit. Some of their best songs are on there. Night by night, Rikki don’t lose that number, pretzel logic, it’s great.

Being a slow person, I became aware of the band when falling asleep while listening to Quincy Jones 'The Dude' on ny brother's walkman around 1981. It was one of those clever walknans that automatically plays the reverse side of cassettes when getting to the end. Aja was on the other side... And so the first chords of Home at last started raining into my afternoon snooze... Both AJA and Gaucho and then Fagen's The Nightfly, kept me busy for the next 15 years. (I mean Babylon sisters is my retirement plan.) Towards 'Centuries end' I began reversing, got stuck on 'The Royal Scam' for a while so very slowly making my way. Did manage to see them twice. Ah... and 'Showbiz kids' is such a killer Babaganoush...

From when I first heard Do It Again I went, now that's different, and it just went from there, innovation and magic, much the same as the progression with the Beatles sound in the '60s, great music God bless 'em.

Oh my God. Bill’s recording of “Suicide is Painless” has been a favorite of mine for years, and yet I never realized there was a connection to his personal life with that song until you started talking about how his partner and brother committed suicide at 1:33. I paused the video at the very moment that it hit me and just sat there for a minute like 😮 to process this realization. Ik this sounds cheesy, but a chill actually went down my spine.

Of all the movies I've seen in the past 15 years, this one has stayed me with me the longest. It haunts me. The atmosphere it creates is overwhelming, and the actors give such restrained intensity to their performances.

Personally I think the first 3 albums are deftones in their prime. Also white pony definitely is the best album and knife prty is what got me into deftones, also one of the best songs lol

I love that Bill's music has touched you personally even after the man himself has been physically gone for decades. Truly the power of recorded music is very strong. But you may be reading much more into it than is there. Certainly all the events you mention had gravity in his life, but you present them in an incorrect order and framing. The album You Must Believe In Spring was recorded in 1977 with Eddie Gomez on double bass (who would leave shortly thereafter, after an 11 year run) and Elliott Zigmund on drums, but because of contractual and other issues was not released until after his death. Bill Died in 1980 and the album came out the following year. He released a number of albums with his "final trio" of Marc Johnson & Joe LaBarbara and many live recordings (of all eras but his last trio specifically) after his death. They continue to find unreleased material. Elaine - his common law wife and partner since the early 60's - died in 1973. He remarried - officially - and had a kid after that. Indeed it was his desire to have a kid and meeting of Nenette that sparked Elaine's suicide and, thus, Bill's guilt. We are all a composite of the things that happen to us, as kids and adults, and Bill was no different, but his trajectory - especially due to his extreme drug use (heroin from c. 1957 - 1970/71 and intravenous cocaine use c. 1974 - 1980) - was set from early on. It's sad that a man who had such expressive ability to touch people with his very individual style couldn't master his own inner sadness. Also, most of the trios you show video of is the last trio, with Marc Johnson and not the trio that recorded the album discussed. But these are minor quibbles, thank you for bringing an oft overlooked album to more people's attention.

my old punk band back in the 90's used our bassist's father's machine tool shop as a practice space. it was hot and sweaty and we spent our spare time skating, digging half-smoked cigarettes out of his dad's ashtray, and getting a lot of free food from the Burger King across the highway. and driving around listening to a lot of music from The Get Up Kids to Sublime to NoFX. oh man i'm about to tear up thinking about how awesome of times we had. i'm 40 now, i've been married and divorced, i beat heroin addiciton 11 years ago. i still struggle with alcohol but i have a better handle on it than i ever have since i took my frist drink. thank you so much for making this incredible synopsis on Cap'N Jazz and all the offshoots there of. Excellent video! 👏

Love that album

The thru fans of Deftones who knows then from the beggening will say that around the fur is the best album, in fact the first 3 albums for me it died there almost nothing came out good after these, by the way its one of my few favorite band and i knew right in the begening that you were introduced to them with dimond eyes
