Добавлен 26 фев 2009
British born - Tashi Mannox is one of the world's foremost contemporary Tibetan calligraphers. As a Dharma Artist Tashi innovates in technique and concept - but is firmly rooted in the integrity of the ancient tradition.
Two decades spent as a monk of the Kagyu order inform his practice. His calligraphy and iconography, while technically and aesthetically compelling, also acts to illuminate ancient Buddhist wisdoms.
At the forefront for Tashi is in the preservation and conservation of Tibetan - one of the many UNESCO list of world endangered languages. He not only creates calligraphic artworks, exhibiting internationally, to inspire and help preserve such disciplines, but also lectures and teaches workshops worldwide.

The not so glamorous behind the scenes of calligraphy
@Tashi-Mannox talks about “Pens, inks, nibs and all these things that can be temperamental - very messy. I mean look today cleaning nibs, my fingers stained, and this is after washing them! Getting pens to work .... There is a lot of preparation before we can even write beautifully”

See how and why Tashi Mannox places three seals to his artwork.
Просмотров 15114 дней назад
The placement of a seal (chop) is traditionally considered intrinsic to the overall composition of an artwork. Used to address balance, there needs to be a sense of spatial awareness where a seal is placed in relation to both the calligraphy, signature and the surrounding space within the paper edge. It is also at the artist's discretion; which particular seal is used to communicate one of seve...
Tibetan Cursive Umé Script

Once everything is in place: the right size pen nib, ink consistency, smooth paper and guid-lines carefully ruled. Only then, with a relaxed mind, posture and attentive focus, the scribe can write with unimpeded flow. With all such elements in place, there manifests a reassuring rhythm of writing, which results in spirited yet calm feel of the completed piece: “Your form body that one never tir...

The practice of writing Tibetan uchen script - drawing vertical lines.
Просмотров 1222 месяца назад
Once we have established the horizontal proportionate guide-lines for writing Tibetan Uchen. We now add the vertical lines which advises the width of each letter of the alphabet. To aid achieving true and accurate guid-lines, a t'square with a 90° set-square are used. This creates the upper 'body' area of a nine-fold grid, as well as the lower 'leg' area, on which the 30 letters of the Tibetan ...

What is often considered a menial task, is in fact essential to writing with excellence, and therefore should be considered as important with as equaled attention of writing itself. If lines are drawn with an impatient and careless application, the writing that follows will not be good. Seeing neat straight lines of calligraphy is what reinsures us as one of the key pleasing factors of writing ...
A rediscovered postcard from my Grandparents
Просмотров 452 месяца назад
Tibetan calligraphy artist @Tashi-Mannox shares a small heartwarming moment rediscovering a postcard from his late Grandparents found after more than three decades concealed among the folios of a Tibetan manuscript. Although devoted Christians, they fully accepted Tashi’s Buddhist faith, expressing their all embracing unconditional love and support of his inward journey on a traditional four-ye...
How to prime and burnish the surface of fibrous paper - Part 2
Просмотров 1273 месяца назад
There are some paper types which may have a fibrous consistency, such as Himalayan made papers of Daphne aurantiaca bark. While this means the paper is particularly robust, difficult to tear with great longevity. A fibrous surface can make fine painting and especially writing on with a metal nib pen particularly troublesome. @Tashi-Mannox demonstrates how to size/prime a fibrous paper surface a...
How to Stretch-mount Paper - part 1.
Просмотров 1413 месяца назад
The benefits of working on stretch mounted paper as opposed working on a loose piece of paper, is that the paper is taught and stable. This is especially helpful when painting or writing with a lot of paint or ink, which would otherwise warp and buckle the paper with shrinkage as it dries. The paper keeps flat when stretch mounted, even after excessive paint or ink has dried with the paper cut ...

Is that Bangla?
it is Tibetan.
I don't have the patience for it. But, I love that there are artists like you in the world!
@@YudronWangmo thank you 🙏🏼 it’s true, much patience and taming the mind and hand is needed.
@@Tashi-Mannox Hats off to you!
Awesome!
🙏❤️🙏
Jaw-dropping mastery, wow. How come when you're sweeping the brush, after applying leaf of gold, just written letters are perfectly left revealed and nothing else? Is it because you use dezo paper and the gold sticks to its rigid bark fibers really firm but areas that were covered with ink are not sticky at all?
@@antonkoval6048 it is because I first add gold -size (glue) to the area I wish the gold leaf to stick.
@@Tashi-Mannox Aah, now it's clear, thank you
Wonderful! Thank you.
Tashi Delek Tashi la, Years ago you recommended using a device called: Pilot Parallel Pens for Tibetan calligraphy Nib size 3.8. At present I use it now.
@@pemadolma7611 Tashi Delek Pema La. Yes I still hold by my recommendation, pilot Parallel are reliable for being easy to use fountain pens. Though strictly speaking the nib should be a shallow oblique for writing Uchen, but as an easily accessible pen, it is currently the most convenient on the market.

REALLY INSPIRING
Excellent skill.
I am an engineer. I view things from that mindset. But, I was tortured by my Eastern European Mother to learn good Roman and Cyrillic penmanship. I never forgot that. Seeing this exquisite penmanship, I hope one day, it can be digitized so as to make it permanent in the cybersphere. Tashi Mannox is a MASTER CALLIGRAPHER. Losing him would decrease humanity....IMHO.
Excellent calligraphy!
Lovely
Hi Tashi, I have just sent you a message on Facebook. It's great to hear your words of wisdom on RUclips. You are an excellent teacher. More please. Have you considered collaborating with Arabic calligraphers? Your style in this painting and the Muslim-looking tower sounds like that would be a marriage made in heaven! Islamic calligraphy is everywhere in the Muslim world, and a good place to start could be Morocco. I have lived in Morocco and am studying Darija and Islam now that I am a Muslim as well as a practicing Tibetan Buddhist. Un abrazo hermano, Martin Zopa (BarefootShaman)
